Ooh lucky 13 - does this mean Kurt will finally discover Jack's secret? Let's see shall we...
Kurt stood up and paced around Jack's hospital room for what felt like the millionth time in as many hours. In reality it had only been 72 minutes since Jack had been brought into the room after his surgery. Lucy, the nurse, had reassured Kurt that his vital signs looked good. It was just a case of him waking up from the anaesthesia. Kurt nibbled on the nails of his uninjured hand nervously as he glanced towards Jack's unconscious form. He heard the door open behind him and turned to see his dad's worried face.
"Dad, I'm okay, you should go home." Kurt said again despite Burt's refusal to do so.
"Kiddo, I just came in to say goodbye. Carole has to get up for work soon so I need to get Stephen ready for school." Burt pulled his son in for a hug. "Don't worry, I want say anything just yet but you'll need to think about how you want to explain this to him. He's 5, not stupid remember." Burt sighed a little as Kurt nodded.
"I'll think of something that hopefully won't traumatise him too much. I hate to ask anything more but could you and Carole keep him tonight too? I don't know how long it's going to take Jack to wake up and I don't want to leave him alone. Besides, I've got to wait for the verdict in my hand too. Lucy says the doctor won't be in until 9am so I need to wait for him to decide whether or not I need surgery."
Burt nodded and hugged his son tightly.
"It's gonna be fine kiddo. You'll see, we'll all be okay. I'll call you this afternoon so that you can speak to the munchkin but call me as soon as you know anything about you or Jack okay?"
Kurt agreed and hugged Burt again before he was left alone in the room with just his unconscious boyfriend and the beeping machines for company. Kurt moved back to the seat beside the bed that he'd occupied for the last few hours and held Jack's hand. He found himself studying the lines across the man's knuckles, jumping as the hand suddenly clenched around his.
"Jack? Jack! Oh please baby, wake up. Its Kurt, please wake up for me." Kurt stood and leant over, brushing the dark curls away from Jack's forehead as the hazel eyes opened slowly, blinking a few times as they grew accustomed to the light in the room.
"Kurt? You're here!"
"Of course I am silly. Where else would I be?" Kurt leant down and pressed a soft kiss to the dry lips below him. "I was so worried about you."
"Are you...are you okay?" Jack said, wincing as pain shot through his leg. "What happened?" Jack managed to pull himself to a sitting position, moving a little to let Kurt lay beside him.
"He shot you! He literally just...he shot you!" Kurt began then paused as the full reality of what had happened washed over him. "Jack, who were those men? Why did they take us? What's going on?"
Jack cupped Kurts face and held his gaze. As he opened his mouth, the door opened and Lucy walked in followed by a friendly looking Asian man in scrubs.
"Hi there, I'm Dr Montgomery. I was the surgeon on call when you were brought in. The surgery went very well, we were able to remove the bullet and stop the bleeding in your leg. It doesn't look like there will be any long term damage but we'll know more in a few days. Parts of your leg may feel numb due to the injury and swelling but I'm confident that will resolve in time. There's a small fracture in your cheekbone but it's not severe enough to require intervention so it's just a case of avoiding anymore fists. Your eardrum on that side is also perforated but again, I'm confident that will heal without issue. Kurt, you will require surgery on that hand I'm afraid. One of the bones hasn't aligned properly after manipulation so we want to get this straightened out as soon as possible to prevent any permanent damage."
Dr Montgomery looked between the two men wishing he had better news for them.
"Jack, you're going to have to stay with us for a couple of days until we can get you mobilised with crutches. Kurt, we can get your surgery scheduled for today and then you can be discharged tomorrow as long as everything goes well with that. You're already being monitored due to your concussion but otherwise you should be fine. We can reset your nose under anaesthetic at the same time as your hand and then we can arrange follow up appointments before we send you home. I can answer any questions you have just now or you can pass them on to Lucy here and I can get back to you."
"Thank you Dr Montgomery." Jack smiled a little as Kurt rested his head on his shoulder. "Can we kept together in this room please? We'd worry about the other too much in separate rooms."
"Of course," Dr Montgomery smiled kindly. The bed next to yours isn't scheduled for use today so I'll make sure it's assigned to Kurt. Take care guys."
Dr Montgomery gave his instructions to Lucy and wrote them in the charts before taking his leave. Lucy explained the process of preparing Kurt for his surgery and even managed to get a small smile out of him.
"I'll give you two some time alone. We'll be taking you down in about 2 hours Kurt so no food and only little sips of water if you really need a drink." After Lucy left, Kurt finished changing into his hospital how and resumed his place beside Jack.
"I need to call my dad. He'll worry if he doesn't know what's going on." Jack nodded and loosened his grip on Kurt, listening as Kurt tried to convince his dad his procedure was minor. It took 15 minutes for both Hummels to be calmed by the others words. "I love you too dad. Hug Stephen for me. I'll call tonight once I'm awake again. Thanks dad."
"Everything ok?"
"Yeah, dad just worries about me and Stephen doesn't know what's happened yet. I still need to think of a reason for all this that won't terrify him."
"I'm so sorry Kurt, I never should have-"Jack's words were halted when Kurt's hand covered his mouth.
"Don't. I liked you before I knew about the witness protection and even after that we both started this relationship. It's not your fault Bee. I don't blame you." Kurt kissed Jack softly, rubbing his uninjured thumb across the bruises in Jack's jaw. "I just can't believe anyone is evil enough to do this to anyone else. If anyone should be sorry it's me, I distracted you."
"It was a worthy distraction" Jack smirked, covering Kurts hand with his own. "Look, I should tell you who I am, what happened to bring all this about. I just...I don't want to lose you. I like you a lot, I really do and I hate that you got hurt but the selfish part of me doesn't want you to know because I don't want to lose you and Stephen."
"You won't lose us. I like you a lot too." Kurt smiled as a memory popped in his head, "even after you butt dialled me that day." He smirked.
"What day? ...oh...oh my god! That voicemail!" Jack's face paled as he remembered the voicemail he'd accidentally left a few weeks earlier.
"It wasn't a voicemail. I answered...and I heard everything." Kurt leaned in kissing Jack as best he could with a broken nose. "It was the hottest thing I've ever heard."
"I'm so embarrassed, I'm so sorry." Jack stammered between kisses.
"Hey Bee?" Kurt pressed his finger to Jack's lips, "that was the first time we came together." Kurt grinned as he watched the realisation spread across his boyfriends face.
"Oh my god, Kurt..." Jack dropped his head onto Kurt's shoulder, "I'm still so embarrassed. Hey?" Jack lifted his head holding Kurts gaze "next time it's your turn to call me." Kurt laughed as Jack winked.
"Deal."
Kurt moved to sit beside Jack again as their giggles settled into a comfortable silence.
"I was a lawyer in Seattle. I was responsible for the accounts of one of the firms biggest clients and I noticed some tax irregularities that went back decades. The whole thing just screamed money laundering and I was bound by law to report it. So I did." Jack stroked Kurt's shoulder as he talked. Kurt listened, knowing it would be easier for Jack to just get the words out. "The FBI came to speak to me and told me they were trying to build a case against our client and they needed my help so I agreed. The first time I was shot at they missed, the second time I got lucky when the bullet hit my arm instead of my chest. That's when the FBI told me the client had put a contract out on me so they put me into witness protection. I thought the whole thing was a bit strange but those idiots from last night have joined the dots for me." Jack kissed Kurt's forehead when he looked up. "Whitmore is the head of the largest drug smuggling empire on the west coast. He must have thought I know more than I do and that's why I was put into protection."
"Will you have to move and get a new identity again?" Kurt asked.
"I'm not going anywhere and I'm not testifying." Jack shook his head firmly.
"But you have to. Otherwise they'll just keep hurting people and getting away with it." Kurt sat up turning to face Jack.
"Kurt, they could have killed us last night. The only reason they didn't is because I said I wouldn't testify. What if they come back and finish the job?"
"But if you're not testifying then won't the Marshals stop protecting you?"
"Maybe, but who said I'm going to tell them? If Seb & Dave were sent all the way to Ohio to find me then that means the trial date has been set. That means I don't have much longer left under their protection. I just need to stay safe for a while longer."
"You know those guys from last night?" Kurt asked.
"Unfortunately I do. They used to do odd jobs for Whitmore and had been in the offices a few times dropping off and collecting files."
"They're like evil Timon & Pumba." Kurt mumbled following his eyes at Jack's confused look, "the meerkat and the warthog."
Jack burst out laughing causing Kurt to laugh softly.
"That's awesome, I'm gonna try and remember that." Jack wiped a laughter tear from his eye. "So you already know my name isn't Jack Davies."
"Yeah, I sort of worked that out for myself with the whole witness protection thing." Kurt chuckled as Jack sat up and held out his hand.
"Hi, my name is Blaine Anderson, born and raised in Seattle." Jack smiled as Kurt took his hand and shook it gently.
"Kurt Hummel, born and raised in Lima with guest spots in New York & L.A." Kurt smirked, "that explains the "Bee" nickname!"
"Yeah," Jack/Blaine laughed softly, "my college roommate Jeff used to joke I was always as busy as a bee and it kinda stuck."
"Well it's a pleasure to meet you Blaine but I should be honest with you..." Kurt trailed off as Jack felt his heart clench in his chest. "I already have a boyfriend but I think your hair is way better than his."
Blaine laughed loudly as he pulled Kurt into his arms and kissed his cheek.
The two men were still embracing a few minutes later when Lucy entered the room.
"Okay lovebirds, time for Kurt's surgery." Both men poured cutely at each other before pecking each other's lips and whispering words of affirmation and adoration. Kurt scooted over into his own hospital bed and promised his boyfriend he'd be back. As Blaine watched him being wheeled out of the room he found that he was already counting the minutes until they were reunited.
Ohhhhh - Blaine's big bad secret is completely out there now. But how is Kurt going to explain this to Stephen? And will their relationship survive the truth? Thank you for reading and don't forget to review it DM me to let me know who you think!
