Chapter 17: Breaking Out

"Leave them alone!" A voice cried out, before a rock nailed Alex in the back of the head.

"what the heck?!" The man swung around, quickly regaining his sights on his target: a young boy quickly bolting and jumped, not hesitating to tackle him, though the man didn't fall, instead stumbling back.

The old man swung around and smashed his cane against the boy.

"Ahh!" He cried out, before Alex forced him off and raised his rifle, not hesitating to fire.

Thankfully, in his daze, he missed, allowing Miguel to roll back to his feet.

Taking their chance, the duo bolted , not hesitating to tackle Alex and the old man once more.

"Come on! Let's get out of-" Lincoln started, only for the flashlights of a squad of enemies to shine upon them. "Here…"

"Yes, yes, I fully expected something like this to happen," The old man pushed himself to his feet and dusted himself off. "What a shame though. And what a waste," He shook his head. "I was fully prepared to show you mercy, but you've forced my hand," he glanced at Miguel. "Et tu, child? I was going to give you payment after I finished my mission. But it seems you've decided to

With that, he stepped passed the men and slammed his cane into the ground, prompting the men to raise their rifles and aim at the children. "No more chances, or delay, terminate them." His men wordlessly complied, and pulled the trigger, unleashing a horde of bullets at them.

"Energy shield!" Another voice cried out, before in a flash, a hexagonal barrier of light appeared before them, causing the bullets to shatter, dispersing their energy.

"What?!" The Collector turned, only to receive a metallic fist to the face, forcing him back.

"Odd, I was sure that should've broken his jaw," Lisa pulled back the robot arm, only for the squad to turn and unleash more bullets.

Lisa raised her arm to block, before firing several bursts of electricity to incapacitate the men. "Taser function works, though I might have to dial down the voltage…"

Lily rushed and jumped up, throwing her arms around her big sister. "Lisa! You came!"

"Of course," She placed Lily on the ground while Lincoln searched the old man's body, pulling out his key and the notebook. "Bout time I got these back."

Jordan ran over. "Cool, time to go," She grabbed Lincoln and pulled him along, while Lisa raised a cannon to fire in case any more men decided to make their way down.

"What's with the power armor?" Lincoln asked, barely able to keep up with his sister.

"Simple. You once mentioned how using one of these could make work easier, when we found you under duress back at that odd outpost base, I decided that now would the best time to get this ready." She turned and boosted up, quickly making her way up the stairs.

"Where's everyone else?" Jordan jumped up to follow, while Lincoln scooped up Lily and Miguel, carrying them under his arms.

"Upstairs," Lisa calmly answered. "The guards didn't expect you to have backup coming, so we simply walked up and took most of them out easily.

Lily tilted her head. "Like knocked out?"

"Affirmative," She answered, before breaking through the top of the stairs and landing with the rest of the family in tow.

Lori quickly burst through the double doors, swinging a van around before dropping the window and shouting. "Come on! Let's get out of here!"

"You don't have to tell us twice!" Lincoln shouted, before running and basically jumping in while Lisa climbed on the roof and Jordan followed Lincoln.

With that, they rushed out of the last temple, leaving skid marks in their wake.

Lincoln wiped the sweat from his brow, as Lori drove through the crowd. Thankfully, the people knowing to make a path through in order not to be run over. "That was a close one."

"Ya think?" Luna glared at him. "I didn't expect to have to deal with armed men today!" She flared her arms.

"Yeah! They almost damaged my makeup!" Lola cut in.

"I don't think your makeup matters if you don't have a head to put it on," Lana crossed her arms, before turning to Jordan. "But in all seriousness, what the heck was that?! We know what the police looked like! Those guys were like crazy PMC goons from one of your video games!"

"That's precisely what they were," Lisa spoke up, leaning over the side, before vaulting into an open seat in to the car, her suit of armor folding neatly into a small cube. "I got a good look at that old man you were talking about, and I've already run the background checks on him."

Lincoln and Jordan leaned over. "And do you know who he is?"

Lisa then scrolled and began to read aloud. "Dr. Lafyette, bounty and treasure hunter."

"Err, what's he a doctor of?" Lily tilted her head.

"That's his name." She answered. "His name is D-R Lafyette."

Luan chuckled a bit. "He's like a Seuss!"

"Well, that's besides the point," Lori shook her head. "We can't continue this stupid trip!"

"What do you mean?" Lincoln's eyes went wide.

For a moment, silence overtook the car as they pulled back into their hotel. "Lincoln, Jordan, face facts. This has gotten way too out of hand!" She hesitated. "We have to tell mom and dad."

Tell… mom and dad? They couldn't!

Jordan pushed forward. "Y-you can't! We haven't found the treasure yet!"

"And what's this stupid treasure hunt of yours gotten us into so far?" Lori countered. :"We've already had to rescue you from that weird old guy twice already!" She pinched the bridge of her nose.

Leni scratched the back of her head. "Yeah… like, I don't like it when guns are pointed at me… and that's happened way too many times just today…"

"I agree," Lisa shoved her tablet under her arm and shook her head. "You have proven the existence of something, however, given the messes you have caused and the danger that these adventures of yours have entailed, I do not see a reason to continue putting your own lives as well as the life of your unborn child at risk."

"We can't go back yet though…" Lincoln looked away with that. "But-"

"No buts!" Lynn cut in. "Look, I know I'm not one to talk about danger and stuff, but… you guys just can't keep doing this! I agree, let's just leave this aside and go home."

The rest of the day was spent holed up in their hotel rooms, with the girls putting a close eye on the couple in case they tried to run off

That Night…

Lincoln found himself leaning at the edge of the balcony railing, his eyes focused on the city around them.

"Couldn't sleep either, huh?" Jordan came at his side. "I just gave Miguel some money and thanked him. He wished us good luck with the rest of the trip."

"Jordan…" The man let out a breath.

"Yeah? I don't think so either," She shook her head.

Lincoln looked at her in confusion. "I was gonna-"

"As if we are gonna be able to live a normal life if we go home right now?" She chuckled. "I was thinking of asking you the same thing."

"It's just… with a kid on the way, nothing is gonna be the same…" He shook his head. "We've already been captured, shot at and threatened multiple times. But what's waiting for us when we get home?"

"I mean, we have our families, right?" She went. "We're not forced to keep going, right?"

Lincoln paused, the years of struggle already rushing to the forefront of his mind. He remembers how hard it was to grow up in his family, to struggle, to take jobs to help provide while also taking his classes. He didn't want that for his children, he wanted them to have a better life than he did. "Maybe…"

"My parents will probably disown me for this…" She looked downcast, her eyes trailing along the roads below. "But… what else is there? I mean…" her voice trailed off.

Lincoln let out a breath. "I don't know what'll come next, I just don't. If your parents are going to do that to you then…" He turned and took hold of her hands. "I'd be willing to take you in, no questions asked." He looked into her eyes. "I love you Jordan, but I'm just worried about what we're gonna do if we just give this up!"

Jordan reached and pulled out the key. "Well… what we do know is that the treasure is real. The ancient civilization that did all this stuff is too…" She looked away. "If we go home, we can work and scrape by maybe… maybe one day even getting something more…"

"But if we keep going, we can find nothing, or the treasure of a life time…" Lincoln went. "And maybe… we can show our face to our parents again, right?"

"Ya know, you're not doing a good job convincing me not to wanna go," Jordan chuckled, before giving her partner a jab on the arm.

"Neither are you," He secured the key around his neck. "I know it's real. Grandpa would have never told me the story if it weren't. I know my sisters are worried and they want us to go home already but… I don't want to… not yet."

"Then we're in agreement," Jordan nodded. "Then again, even if I disagreed, I wouldn't let you go on your own, especially since I don't think much will stop you."

Lincoln chuckled at that, before a knock came from the door. "Who is it?"

No answer.

Slowly, Lincoln approached, carefully opening the door to reveal… Lily, dressed in her lavender jacket and backpack. "I wanna come with you!"

Lincoln and Jordan turned to each other once more, and nodded.

That night, they carefully made their way down and out of the hotel, before heading on their way once more.

"So… where to next?" Jordan held up the map.

Lincoln gulped. "Next stop… the UK."
