Chapter 14: Escape

Nessie's POV

My mind was reeling. Trying to think of a way that I could get away from my aunt and uncle. Then I remembered something. Something that gave me hope. I was half vampire. They were merely human. I could get away. I was strong enough to overpower them, grab Tyler, and run as fast as I could.

I pulled back so hard that my aunt stumbled. "I'm not going anywhere with you and neither is Tyler!"

"Oh yes you are you little-" I hit my aunt hard and grabbed my baby from her arms. My uncle grabbed my arm but I broke free from him easily. The cops came running to see what all the commotion was. I took advantage of all the confusion and made a run for it.

I ran aimlessly. I didn't give much thought to where I was going. Only where I was running from. "There you are Nessie. I've been looking all over for you," I heard a familiar voice behind me that made me turn back. David came out from where he'd been hiding. In his arms was a baby girl. That must be his daughter Alyssa.

"Damn where did you come from? You scared the hell out of me!"

"I could say the same about you. What are you running from?"

"My aunt and uncle as well as the police. They're trying to send Tyler and I back with them. But we can't go back,"

"Why not?" he asked.

"It's too dangerous. If we go back. They're murders,"

"Murders?"

"It's a long story. One that I'd rather not delve into. But the bottom line is that we can't go home with them. That is why I ran away in the first place,"

"Okay. I understand,"

"So what happened to you last night?" I asked him curiously. I felt bad after I'd left him.

"Well after you left. I saw a man come take you away by the way. I realized he was your family by listening in on you two. Well anyway after you left I went home and tried to think of a way to find out where they were keeping my daughter. I figured out a way to hack into their computer system and I found out where she was. I guess you can say I went and kidnapped her from them," he smiled.

I was about to say something when my stomach grumbled. I blushed with embarrassment. "Do you want to go have breakfast somewhere? I still owe you a date after all,"

I thought about saying no. My family would probably be looking for me. But I was hungry and I wanted to get to know him some more. So instead I said "Yes I'd like that very much," his answering smile was infectious. "What are you in the mood for?"

"I'm thinking pancakes or waffles. I'm not really sure. I'm so hungry I could eat a whole cow honestly,"

"Well then let's go,"

I was anxious to keep moving. I knew that I was far away from my aunt and uncle now but I felt this strange urge to keep on moving. Maybe it was just still my nerves. I followed him. "We're not very far away from iHop if you want to go there,"

"That sounds perfect," maybe breakfast was all that I needed to settle my nerves. The restaurant was only about a five minute walk from where we were. There was a bit of a wait though until we could be seated. I felt a little more relaxed now.

"Nessie are you sure you're alright? You look a little on edge,"

"Must me the nerves. That's all,"

"Everything is going to be fine Nessie. Whatever is going on with your aunt and uncle. Well I'm sure it'll work itself out,"

For a brief second I thought about just telling him everything. But I decided not to. So instead we talked about other things. Our kids. Our family life. Our past relationships and how they ended horribly. Just as we were being seated his daughter started crying.

"She's just hungry. That's all," he said before I could ask what was wrong. Rather then pulling out a baby bottle he pulled out a strange looking metallic bottle with a baby bottle nipple attached to it. It more liked a thermos cup then a baby bottle.

"What is that?"

"Oh the bottle? It's my own little invention. It comes in handy when she gets hungry in public,"

"But why not just use a regular bottle instead?"

He laughed. "Because the humans would get freaked out if they saw her drinking blood. That's why. So this is better,"

"You feed her blood?"

"Blood is our natural food source. We need a diet that consists of blood and human food. So does Alyssa. I switch it up every feeding. She prefers the blood though,"

"But she's three quarters human-"

"But the vampire in her is stronger than the human. I bet if you gave Tyler some blood he'd love it,"

"My son doesn't want blood. He has no interest in it,"

"How much do you want to bet he'll drink it if I offer it to him?"

As if on cue Tyler started crying. He was hungry. I could tell just from his cry that he was hungry. "Do you happen to have any regular baby formula in that bag?"

He shook his head. "Nessie I think you should try giving him the blood. It'll make him stronger the way it makes us stronger. He's going to love it,"

Well if he had vampire in him like me then maybe it wouldn't hurt to give him some blood. "Fine I'll give it a try,"

He took out another bottle from his bag and handed it to me. I wasn't so sure that this was going to work. But then I noticed that Tyler was looking at the bottle with unusual interest. As soon as the bottle was in his mouth he started drinking. Right away I noticed his eyes widen in awe. He started drinking faster then I'd ever seen him drink before. David was right. Tyler loved the blood.

"Thanks," I said to David when I handed him back the now empty bottle.

"Here you can give him another one. Poor little guy must be starved for blood,"

"Starved for blood? I don't understand,"

"Our bodies know what it wants. What it needs. It's instinctual. The only reason you went years without drinking is because you were unaware of what your body was telling you. You were able to ignore your body's needs which is unfortunate because when you go to long without blood you become weak,"

"You mean human?"

"Exactly but now that you and Tyler have started drinking it there is no going back. Neither one of you will be able to ignore your body's need for blood anymore. You just have to be careful about where and when you feed and keep an eye on Tyler around humans at all times now,"

"Why?"

"Several times now when I allow humans to hold my daughter she's tried to bite them. One time she was successful. Luckily she's not venomous. Unlike us babies don't have much impulse control. He will try to bite humans if you're not watching him closely,"

I looked at my boy who was just finishing up the second bottle of blood. I wondered if the blood was really having the same effect on him that it had on me. What kind of effects would the blood have on a baby?

"So Nessie do you have any plans for the rest of the day?"

On one hand I should get back to the Cullens. I should get back to them and let them know what happened back at the police station. On the other hand it felt kind of nice to be out. There was so much going on in my life right now that I really could use a break from it all. Even if it was just for a few hours. I really liked David. Not only was he good looking but he was nice and helpful. He was the only other hybrid that I'd ever met. I wondered how many of us were out there? I decided to ask.

"So David how many of us are there in the world?"

"Hybrids are an exceedingly rare species. I've heard of the existence of others but truthfully you're the only one I have ever met. The reason are existence is so rare is because humans usually don't survive sexual encounters with vampires. The vampire usually ends up killing the human by drinking her blood or by accidentally killing her with sheer strength alone. Your mom and my mom are the rare exceptions. Since they survived the intercourse they were able to conceive us,"

"Wow. You're very knowledgeable,"

"Well I grew up in that world. I know you didn't so you must have a lot of questions,"

"That's the understatement of the century,"

"Well I have all day to answer them. That's if you're not busy," he suggested.

"No. I'm not busy at all. I'd like to spend the day with you," I hoped I wouldn't get in trouble for this later but right now I didn't care. As soon as we finished eating breakfast we decided to go to the movies. But then we gave up on that idea when we realized there wasn't anything that could be considered baby friendly.

So we went to the bookstore instead. As soon as I mentioned that I loved books he suggested we go to a nice bookstore that he knew of. I learned that he was something of a book fanatic himself though he preferred mystery novels where as I proffered romance. I was having fun and for a time I was able to forget about everything going on in my life. We spent at least two hours in there. Then after that we went to have lunch.

After lunch we decided to go to the park. We had been talking for awhile when I noticed that he looked nervous.

"Hey what's wrong?" I asked him.

"Well I wanted to ask you something but I'm kind of nervous to ask you,"

"What is it?" I asked him curiously.

"Well I want to kiss you. But only if you want to,"

My heart skipped several beats. Then my heart started racing. Kiss him? I knew right away that I wanted to feel his lips against mine. "Then go for it," I smiled to put him at ease.

That was all he needed to hear. We leaned in toward each other and soon I could feel his lips against mine. I could feel his tongue inside my mouth and mine inside his. He was a good kisser. Much better than Tyler's father. I could feel his passion. I could feel my own passion growing. This was perfect. I didn't want it to end.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw something running toward us. I realized with shock that it was Jacob. He stopped running when he saw us. He looked on at us in shock. His body started shaking really badly. Then he ran back and disappeared. I couldn't help but wonder what that was all about as I continued to kiss the boy sitting by my side.
