I rub my eyes, and try to bring back the tired feeling from this morning, but fail. I get out of bed carefully so as to not wake Shauna up. The death of Johana devastated her and the news from earlier did not help with her grief and stress. I slowly exit out of the room and walk to the kitchen. I lower myself onto the floor and put my head between my legs. I try to keep my breathing steady, but nothing seems to help. I haven't had a panic attack this bad since after Uriah was unplugged, so this is new and old for me. Hot, sticky tears run down my face and I feel like I am going crazy. I try to distract my mind, and I replay the day in my head.
I woke up early, and almost fell back to sleep, but Shauna woke me up with cold water in my face. I was pissed at her for a while, but then I decided she needed a laugh after everything she has been through. We made breakfast and made out for a while. We both left the house at around eleven thirty and headed over to Four's apartment. When I knocked on the door, no one answered. I called his cell, but it went to voicemail. I started to panic and Shuana calmed me down for a bit. We headed down to the lobby to wait. We both must have fallen asleep because we woke up to Janie telling us that if we didn't have a room, we had to leave. It was 4:30. I looked at my phone to see if he called me back, but there was nothing. I kept my emotions under control and left Shauna to go look for him. I swear I went through the entire city asking around, but no one had seen him. I knew I was getting tired when I thought I saw Tris riding in a rusty, old blue truck and decided to head home. I walked in, and saw Shauna, pale, on the couch. My phone was sitting on the coffee table in front of her. I walked over to her, and sat down, ready to apologize, but she looked at me with a look of terror in her eyes.
"Someone called you phone, and I picked up for you. It was a man named Caleb. He said that Four was severely injured after being kidnapped and was deposited in the hospital just over an hour ago. He went into emergency surgery and the doctors aren't hopeful. I don't know what to do." I just sat there and stared at her. I immediately grabbed my phone and called the guy, Caleb, back. He answered on the third ring and I started asking questions at a rapid fire pace. He waited until I was done, then told me Marcus Eaton kidnapped him with the help of David Trevor. He followed Trevor because he has been on his case for awhile. They shot Four in the lower thigh, and beat him up while he was still unconscious. They almost killed him, but thank goodness that he stepped in at that minute. He stopped the knife from going into his chest, but it ended up in his shoulder. He and a few other people helped him to the hospital. The would in his leg was really bad and the doctors say they might have to amputate. He is still in surgery now, but he will call you as soon as he wakes up, so you can visit him. He said since Johana was dead, and Four was in critical condition, I had to take charge. He said he released an article about how the faction system may restart, but I could make changes to it if I wanted. I sat there in shock. I know a little about Four's background, because I was in the same initiate class as him, so my eyes nearly popped out of my head when Caleb said that Marcus Eaton was part of the kidnapping. I can't imagine someone harming their own son like that. If the reports that Erudite sent out are true, then maybe it wasn't too hard for him too after years of doing it before Four transferred to Dauntless.
Shauna walks into the kitchen and sees me, then gasps. I remove my head from my legs and look at her. She is beautiful. How did I ever deserve her? She sits down next to me, and hugs my shoulders, and more silent tears fall from my eyes. She kisses them away.
"I'm sorry for the tears." I choke out and she shakes her head.
"Tears are not a sign of weakness. They make you stronger." She says before kissing my lips. I kiss back and break apart after we both can't breathe. I wipe away the tears that are running down her cheeks, that I just noticed, and hug her tightly. We sit there, on the kitchen floor, in each other's arms for a long, long time, until we both fall asleep in each other's embrace.
TOBIAS
I stare at the empty space right where my leg used to be, and Caleb clears his throat. I look up at him, with a look of shock on my face. What- How? I don't remember how any of this happened. He gives me a pitying look before he starts talking.
"The doctors said it probably wouldn't be the best if I answered all of you questions, but I am going to ignore them because I can imagine this is all very stressful."
"I don't remember any of that happening." I say to him and he nods knowingly.
"The doctors said they thought that would happen. Do you want to know anything?"
I sit there, on the uncomfortable hospital bed and stare off into space. Caleb shifts on his seat and excuses himself to make a call. I lie back down, not wanting to look at the nothingness below my thigh and I must fall asleep because I wake up, and Zeke is sitting where Caleb was. I see him, I immediately feel a little better. I shouldn't have been shutting him out. I sit up, slowly, and Zeke notices me. He jumps out of his chair and runs over to my bed and gives me a big hug. I wince, because of my cuts, bumps and bruises, bet he doesn't seem to notice. He pulls away and looks at me with a serious expression on his face.
"Dude, what the hell happened." He says and I shake my head.
"I don't really know. Apparently my brain shut down the memories because of stress or pain or something else. I only know what Caleb told me, which is that my father kidnapped me, hurt me and I have no leg now." I pull the blanket off my leg again, and Zeke gasps.
"Wow." Is all that he says. I wonder what life will be like. I'll talk to Shauna sometime. She knows what the feeling is to believe you are never going to be able to use your legs again. I cover my leg with the blanket, and change the subject.
"How is everything going, government wise?" I ask, clearing my throat.
"The faction systems are going down. Caleb told me that I had to take charge until you were able to." He says cautiously, like he doesn't know how I will react. I smile, because I am glad that someone was taking care of that, but I will know the exact rules he has set up. I tell this to him, and he nods, taking out his phone. He clicks on a few things and then hands it to me. I take the phone and skim the article. Rebuilding, Factionless, 17 instead of 16, no more faction before blood, new leaders. Everything sounds fine, but there would be some things I would need to change. I nod nod and hand the phone back to Zeke. He looks worried.
"What?" I ask him, and he answers.
"Choosing day is in six days, and we basically have no plan. I don't know how we are going to do it. We are rebuilding compounds, but that is going to take a while, so I guess we will have to use the Old Dauntless compound until everything is finished. The same thing with all of the other factions. Nothing has happened, because we need an actual leader's permission so start anything. We will need to clean up, and-" I cut him off.
"Zeke, you don't have to worry too much. I am giving you the ok right now to start building the new compounds, and as soon as I am out of this hospital, I am going to take charge. I do want to ask you something. I can't do it myself, and I know that you have been an unofficial leader for a long time, but I was wondering if you would like to change that? It wouldn't be only you, of course. We could add people too." Zeke looks speechless and Caleb walks in.
"Sorry, if I am interrupting anything, but Four has some more visitors." More visitors? I don't really know anyone but Zeke, Shauna and Chris. At least I haven't talked to anyone but them. I nod and Zeke gets off the bed and walks out the room, still with a shocked expression on his face. I wring my hands and wait for the visitors to come in. After a while, Caleb leads three people into my room and I gasp. The old man in front of me looks exactly like my mother, and the younger man looks like...me. I stare at him, and he looks very uncomfortable. The woman with blonde hair breaks the silence by clearing her throat.
"Four, I am Juliett, this is my husband Dwight and our son, Jeffory. We helped Caleb get you to the hospital." She says, and I think I know what is happening, but I don't want to admit it. "There is another thing too." Juliett says when it looks like neither Dwight nor Jeffory are going to speak. "The reason that we helped you, isn't just because you were dying. It was also because we are related. Dwight is your mother's half-brother, and Jeffory here is your cousin.
