Ch 14

No sooner had he turned the nearest corner when he heard sirens. Looking in the rear view mirror he growled, figured Marcus wouldn't give up that easily. He floored it, trying to put distance between them. But Marcus was fast, and a good driver, he was gaining on Sam by the second. Approaching an intersection both suvs skidded around a corner. They went up on an exit ramp that led to the highway. Finally on somewhat level ground, Sam could see Marcus gaining on him. Pulling alongside him Sam saw a flash of silver before his passenger window burst into bits, spraying him with glass shards. Sam returned fire, shattering the driver side window with his own firearm.

"Carm over here!" She trotted across the street and hopped in the car. "Well now you can add escaped from the FBI to your growing list of accolades." Ivy smirked. "Not important right now, we need to find Sam, he told me that he was trying to lead Marcus away from the area." She touched her ear, intent on speaking with Player. Shit! I forgot they confiscated all of my gear! Turning to Shadowsan, "do you still have contract with Player?"

Shadowsan removed the earpiece and handed it to her. "Player? You there?" "Carmen! I'm glad you're ok, I was getting worried." "Do we have a location on Sam?" Typing was heard. "Unfortunately no, we never did get him a scynced communication device." Carmen put her head against the seat, sighing. "If I may add something, Mr. Pierce has proven himself to be capable of a great many things. I think it's best we let him handle this particular situation himself. When he is ready he will reach out."

Back on the highway both suvs were in a ramming fest, trying to force the other off of the road. Slamming into each other again Sam could see the determination on Marcus's face. They separated again, comming together faster than before. Marcus raised his gun and fired. "Gghhaahh!" Screamed Sam, clutching at his shoulder. Son of a bitch! Putting space between them again Sam readied his own weapon. Barreling into each other Sam opened fire. His aim was off though and he ended up hitting Marcus in the cheek. "Aaaaggrhh! Shit!" Marcus turned into the other suv, with Sam mimicking him, essentially both suvs pushing against each other. Marcus was clutching at his cheek.

Hhooonnk ! HOONK! Both cars separated, nearly missing the 18 wheeler that split them down the middle. Reducing speed Sam turned into Marcus, hitting him behind the back wheel. The nudge was effective enough to force the other man to readjust. They pulled even again, this time Marcus on the border of highway. Apparently they were expanding the lanes, but no real construction had been started yet. Looking ahead Sam saw a concrete barrier blocking their path. I could pull away now but it would give Marcus time to regroup. Gotta find another way!

Marcus was a very good driver, he still holds records at the academy. But even he was at a loss for what to do in this situation. I can't get enough space to pull out ahead. But if I don't do something I'm gonna die! The barrier was fast approaching. Suddenly he spied the makeshift guard railing up a head, and an idea wormed it's way in his head.

Sam was having second thoughts about his current predicament. Sure he was keeping Marcus at bay but he wasn't giving himself a lot of time to escape either. Suddenly , Marcus straightened his suv out. There was a few inches of space between them now. What is he planning? Then he saw it: "No he wouldn't!" Sure enough Marcus angled his suv near the makeshift guard rail prepared to smash through it to the street below. Pushing away from the other suv , Sam tried to ram the other car off its intended course. Easier said than done. He moved back one more time and pushed the car towards Marcus's. Just as Marcus turned and went through the guardrail, Sam was going for another ram. Marcus went completely off the ramp. Sam tried to brake, but ended up taking the guardrail with him and following Marcus down.

The front of the suv impacted first, which in turn activated the airbag in the wheel. "Oooof." Sam's head was enveloped in the protective bag. The suv tilted to the left ending up laying upside down. Sam was shell shocked but not completely out of it. Kicking at the windshield he finally busted it open and crawled out. Surveying the damage he found the other suv. It was upright, miraculously albeit with most of the windows smashed and airbags deployed. Slowly approaching he noted Marcus was still inside. Opening the door he dragged him out by the arm, then stood over him. The other man coughed. "So this is it huh? Me and you Pierce." Sam nodded. "Me and you Marcus." "You gonna shoot me Pierce? " " I'm seriously considering it." Came the heated reply.

"You know she's eventually gonna get caught , might not be by me but she's gonna slip up one of these days." "I know , nobody is always 100%, we all have off days." Marcus spit out the bullet in his mouth. "That hurt ya know." "Yea, even if it was unintentional." Sam produced handcuffs. "Your coming with me Marcus, you're gonna stand trial," He put Marcus' hands behind his back. "For all the illegal things you did." He was about to cuff him when the other man spun around and kicked him in the face. Stumbling back, Sam was thrown into the suv. "Gghhaa!" He yelled hitting his injured shoulder. "I'm never going to prison , NEVER!" Marcus swung at Sam's head but Sam ducked, hitting him with a gut punch. Rearing back Sam hit him in the face. Tackling him Sam reigned down punches until Marcus flipped him off. Marcus applied a headlock, adding punches for good measure. Sam worked his way back to his feet, using elbows to create separation.

Both men readied themselves for another round, but promptly fell, fatigue and blood loss taking its toll. Sam was bleeding from his arm and head and he thought he wrecked his knee in the crash, while Marcus's face, his head and his thigh were stained red. Barely able to stand Marcus threw a haymaker hitting Sam in the face. Sam responded with one of his own. He felt the sticky wetness of blood on his fist. Marcus lunged forewords, grabbing Sam and taking him to the ground. Sam tried to cover up but a few shots got in. Quickly he rolled over pinning the other man down. He hit Marcus with a few more punches before stopping. Completely out of energy he slumped off of the dirty agent hitting the pavement.

Both parties laid there for what seemed like an entirely. Eventually Sam was able to right himself and stand above the other man. Taking out his gun he aimed it. " G-go ahead I bet you won't." Marcus gurgled. "You never did have the balls." The last word was accompanied by blood spewing out of Narcus's mouth. "Besides I'm gonna come after her again once I get out." He chuckled. Lowering his gun Sam dropped it and moved towards the other suv. "I knew it, no balls!" Sam returned, this time with Marcus's gun in hand. Marcus' face became stoic. "You hurt a l-lot of people Marcus. You're scum, you're dirty, probably the dirtiest I've seen." "Can't kill me Pierce! That's murder!" "If it's your gun I can say you got disarmed and shot." Sam countered. " ya know, I was just gonna come after her, but now? Now I'm gonna kill those kids too." Sam clicked the hammer back. "And their parents! And anybody else that gets in my way, mark my words!" His voice rose. Suddenly, Marcus grabbed Sam's gun and pointed it at him. In a split second decision Sam squeezed the trigger. BANG! Marcus slumped back, dropping the other gun. His breath was beginning to turn shallow. "Hehehe, looks like you win Pierce. You're a….. goody two shoes, a rat. " If I'm the rat then what are you?" "I'm the best, the smartest, the winner! I survive." "There are no winners in this game, only players. We are all rats just trying to survive." Sam concluded. He raised the gun, BANG! BANG! BANG! "Last...rat...standing." Dropping the gun Sam began his long walk home.
