Chapter 12: The Brother
(Third Person POV)
Impossible... That was the only word any could think to use as they stared at the teenage girl before them. She had passed out, her body no longer convulsing from the venom that had raced through her. Edward had taken his shirt off quickly to cover Hannah to give her some privacy in her unconscious state. He knelt beside her as he did, his eyes staring over her in disbelief.
Her skin was perfect. Her hair was healthy and strong. Her breathing was steady. Her heart was beating… slower than a human and wolf… but beating.
His hand pressed to her arm. He was shocked to feel her skin temperature was the same as his own. He took a breath of air to smell her scent. His eyes widened and he stood backing away with astonishment. He could smell three scents within her: The scent of the pine from her wolf self, but not pungent like the packs; The faded scent of the sweetness and warmth from her human blood; And the scent of floral goodness from her vampire self.
"Edward?" Carlisle stepped over to his son with question.
Edward was amazed. "She's… she's transformed into a vampire, but also is still human. Her skin is cold and strong like ours, but soft like Bella's. And I smell blood in her, but also wolf and vampire venom mixed in."
Sam stood in front of the pack who had emerged. He ordered the two voices who were screaming in his head to phase back. He couldn't concentrate and the rest of the pack couldn't calm them down. Seth and Jacob rushed off to phase, and they came back a moment later in their shorts rushing over to Hannah. Jacob crouched beside her in tears and Seth knelt in silent horror.
Sam stepped forward still in wolf form so he could get Edward's attention.
What do you mean, 'You smell all three?'
Sam took a whiff. His eyes widened too. He could smell what Edward was speaking of. Her vampire scent was not pungent like the Cullens, but it definitely was not werewolf or human. It smelled like sage. It was inviting. This made Sam wary.
Carlisle stepped over to the girl now, crouching beside Jacob as Seth pressed his hand to her paled cheek. She still had the color of Quileute skin, but it was like a thin coat of frost had spread over. Carlisle pressed his hand to the jugular vein on her neck and felt the dim pulse.
"She's very weak. Her body just went through something none of us are going to be able to fathom."
Embry stepped towards his friend with worry. He asked Sam, Will she wake up?
Alice suddenly spoke. "The future is so hazy with all of you here. But… I can see brief glimpses."
Edward listened to her thoughts. He sighed heavily when he saw what Alice was seeing. It was just as they all feared. "I didn't think it was possible… but I guess because Hannah was still human when she was bit, the venom was able to latch to certain parts of her body." He looked around the group to answer them. "She's a mix of all three. She won't age anymore, but she will still hunger and have human needs like the rest of the pack. Unfortunately, she will suffer… the venom will make her thirst for blood. Alice see's her hunting in the near future."
Paul suddenly growled. Abomination.
Embry was outraged by his comment. He turned towards him with fury and snarled. Say that again and I rip your throat!
The silver wolf turned to face Embry ready to fight. I'm just saying! We know nothing about her now! Who's to say she won't wake up and kill Emily, Kim, or Claire?! What about your mom? What about Billy and Sue? Cullen just said that she is going to need blood!"
Sam growled and turned to face the both of them. No one is killing Hannah, Paul! She is Seth's imprint! We do not harm imprints! That is out of the question!
Paul grit his teeth. So, what?! We just take her home and watch her for the rest of our lives to make sure she doesn't suck the other imprints and council members dry?! You heard the psychic! She will want blood!
Quil suddenly arrived back in the area with Emmett who was soaked as if he jumped into the river. Edward read his brother's thoughts and found he had indeed. Both Emmett and Quil were furious, but for different reasons. Emmett snapped, "Damn chick is just too fast! Every time! I'm starting to get pissed!"
The chocolate brown furred wolf stepped past Emmett between Hannah and Paul. Quil had heard Paul's thoughts. Don't you dare touch her, Lahote!
Sam growled. No one is touching her. Paul and Jared, go check on Billy, Collin, and Brady! Make sure they are okay! Leah, go find some clothes or a blanket for Hannah and come back. The rest of you phase back. That's an order.
The wolves disappeared. Emmett, Carlisle, Alice, Jacob, and Seth had sensed something was wrong and prepared to defend the unconscious girl if necessary. Edward explained to them once the wolves were gone that Paul lost his temper, and Jacob was outraged by Paul's desire to kill his sister. Seth was still frozen. He had not moved since reaching Hannah's side. His hand still rested on her cheek.
A moment later the pack returned apart from the three sent on their tasks. Sam spoke again with disbelief, "Sorry… Some members of our pack act before they think." He then stepped over to crouch beside Hannah. Jacob was still on high alert and ready to attack his pack if they dared hurt her. Seth did not speak or move. He couldn't find his voice.
"Did he seriously think about killing her?!" Jacob's body shook at the thought.
Sam tried to calm him down. "I'll handle Paul, Jake. No one is killing, Hannah. But we will need to take serious precautions. We don't know what we're about to deal with. Hannah is going to be scared too."
Jacob growled. His eyes were clouded with tears. "I told you we should've left Seth with them! I knew Collin and Brady weren't ready to protect her from that Bitch! We all knew she was in danger! We should've left her with more protection!" Jacob was in a panic. He couldn't calm himself. His sister was just bit by a vampire, and none of them had been there to protect her like they promised.
He had heard her thoughts. Felt her fear. He listened to her pain. But he was miles away when she needed him.
Seth could not think. He was still. His heart was ice. His eyes were locked on the girl he had sworn to protect. He told her there was no danger, even when she begged him not to go. He had lied to her, and she had suffered.
Alice pressed into Carlisle- who had returned to his family-in agony. "This is my fault. I could see this happening, but I couldn't figure out when Victoria would come. Having all of these shifters around me makes everything so hard to see. I'm just watching so much these days. I let my guard down focusing more on Bella."
"Alice," Carlisle spoke softly, hugging her to his side. "You can't do it all. This isn't your fault. Victoria knew we would be training tonight somehow. She took the opportunity when we were all distracted. Your vision showed Hannah with Edward and Bella on Friday… we thought this meant she was safe… we all let our guard down."
Sam spoke again. "Hannah's thoughts confirmed something to us tonight when she phased though... Victoria did indeed create the newborn army, and they are being commanded by a vampire named Riley. The newborns are going to be sent as a distraction so Victoria can get to Bella. Alice's vision was right. We will need to prepare for the attack even more now. And clearly Bella's scent will draw them in. We'll need her to run through the area Thursday to leave her scent and lead the newborns to the clearing."
Embry snapped, "Is it really the time for this conversation? What about Hannah?! What the hell are we going to do if she wakes up and really is part vampire?! We can't kill her! You know Seth would be devastated. And she's our friend, and Jacob's sister!"
Carlisle spoke again. He still held Alice to comfort her. "There's only one thing to do right now. Because you all are in such close proximity to humans, Hannah needs to come back to our place where she can wake up and not be surrounded by human blood. This would just be a precaution. I'm not sure if she will thirst like other newborns, and it is probably best we don't test it."
"Shouldn't we be doing something?! Sucking the venom out maybe?!" Quil stated. "We're all standing here while she's suffering!"
Carlisle shook his head. "I don't think it will work. The venom has settled in her. We'd have to drain her whole body, and even then the venom may still linger."
Emmett asked from behind his family, "Should we practice on another mutt first then? See if maybe it's possible?"
Edward scowled. "Emmett! That's-" his voice stopped though as Jacob's thoughts shocked him. He looked at the torn brother with disbelief. "What? You aren't serious? It doesn't matter even if the bite does affect you, Jacob. It's too late for Hannah."
"Maybe we could figure out how to draw the venom out if it does change me!" Jacob stood in despair. "I'm happy to be a test subject if it might save her!"
Carlisle seemed to consider it. "It could be helpful to see if there's a way to draw it out. But that's if it even works…" Then he let out a sigh. "This would also help us know what will happen if one of you wolves is bit during the fight. That way we are prepared when the newborn army comes in a few days."
Jacob moved from his sister and stepped over to Edward.
"Jake…" Embry was nervous. But he also was worried about his friend who was already bitten. "Are you sure about this? It could kill you."
Jacob looked back at his sister who was as still as a corpse. He didn't care what happened to him anymore. He had to see if they could find a way to save her. He had promised he'd protect her. He couldn't give up if there was a chance.
He held his arm out towards Edward with sincerity. "Go on. I know you've always thought about ripping into me. Here's your chance."
Edward narrowed his eyes. "Bella never finds out about this."
"Deal."
Edward sighed heavily. "This is a waste of time. But fine. If there is a possibility this can save her giving you some pain is worth it."
Edward stepped forward and grabbed Jacob's arm. He bit down on the wrist where veins were visible. Jacob shouted out in agony, and Edward pulled away. The wolf blood was bitter in Edward's mouth, to the point he actually gagged, and he darted to the side of the field, spitting it out quickly. While he did this, Jacob clutched his wrist which stung like crazy. But the wound only bled out black blood. Then once the venom was pushed out the wound sealed up. The pain stopped. Jacob and everyone else were astonished. Then dismayed.
"Well… now we know those who have already phased are immune… so Hannah was affected because she was still human when she was bitten…" Sam's words broke his heart as he spoke them. As much as he had hurt the girl in the past, he knew he was only going to hurt her more from now on. He would have to keep her out of La Push, and he knew this would only make her hate him with greater intensity. He did not enjoy being the bad guy in her eyes, but he had to protect his imprint and the others.
Edward still had a bitter taste in his mouth from Jacob's blood, but he was able to speak again as he came back to the others. His words came out with sadness. "Just as I said… It's too late everyone. The only way is trying to suck it out, but that will kill her. We have no choice but to let this run its course. She will continue to change… I can already see her body becoming more permanent."
Sam clutched his hair. What was he going to tell Billy and the council? He knew the pack wouldn't truly know how bad Hannah's condition was until she regained consciousness. But he couldn't take her back to La Push until he understood what she was becoming.
Leah suddenly ran back into the forest, holding not just clothes for Hannah but a blanket. When she came into the area and saw Jacob clutching his arm still from Edward's bite, she looked around puzzled. She shook it off though.
"Paul and Jared are with Billy and the boys. Looks like Collin and Brady had some pretty rough bumps and breaks, but they are healing. Paul and Jared moved them into the living room after getting them to phase back. They're really beating themselves up… they are blaming themselves so much... Billy is still unconscious. We were hoping the doc could come look him over and make sure he's okay. We moved him to his room."
Jacob had seen the brief flash through Hannah's mind earlier of his dad being strangled and dropped to the grass. He was glad to hear he was alive. He looked over at his sister. Hannah had given herself over to Victoria to save the youngest wolves and their dad. His selfless sister didn't deserve the fate forced upon her.
Carlisle responded. "Of course. I will definitely go check on him… I'll look over Collin and Brady as well. Just let me go to the house and grab my medical supplies. I'll drive back over once I explain to the others what has happened."
Leah headed over to her brother who had not left his imprints side. His face was frozen in shock. He didn't know what to do.
"Seth," Leah whispered to her brother. She placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. He had not moved from Hannah. He was frozen. His heart hurt as Hannah's pain became his own. "It's going to be okay, Seth... no matter what happens, we'll all protect her. There's no way in hell Paul is going to kill her. He knows if he does so it will be the end of him."
Her brother shook. His eyes stared at the girl before him who was breathing peacefully. She was like a sleeping angel. But he knew there was no angelic essence in her. There was a darkness inside her now that Seth feared would only hurt her further.
"I promised her that she'd be okay…" he whispered. "I lied to her… just like the others had done before… She needed me, and I left her."
Leah sighed. She hugged him to the side trying to comfort him in the only way she knew how. "She's alive… she's going to be okay… calm down." She brushed a tear on his cheek. "She's still your imprint Seth… no one will hurt her."
Alice left Carlisle and stepped over to Leah, Seth, and Hannah. "Why don't you men turn your eyes. I don't think Hannah wants you all ogling over her body. Let us put some clothes on her."
As the men in the area turned their eyes away, Sam looked over at Carlisle with defeat. "I hate to say this, but I think we do need to take her to your place like you said… if you don't mind...?"
Carlisle nodded with understanding. He was already aware this would not be a temporary situation from Sam's tone. Hannah was their responsibility now.
"Yes. I guessed this would be the case. It is definitely for the best… We will head there now, and then I will return to La Push. It should take me about forty minutes. I assume Jacob and Seth will be coming to our place for a little bit?"
Seth had stood and walked over to the men facing in the opposite direction. His heart was in agony. "I'm coming..."
Jacob agreed. "I'll come make sure she's comfortable. Then I'll go back to check on my dad..."
"Okay… let's get her to the house," Carlisle insisted. "Edward, go ahead and take Bella home. It's probably a good thing she isn't there-"
"No. We don't need to worry about that." Alice said. She was done dressing Hannah in a long shirt and sweats. Leah had wrapped Hannah in the blanket as well. They had both been amazed to feel the blood pumping beneath her cold skin. Alice tossed Edward back his shirt and he put it back on. She continued to speak. "I can see flashes. Hannah won't hurt Bella."
Jacob looked over at the petite vampire. "Do you see when she'll wake up?"
Alice grimaced. "Yes… before we go fight the newborns… Friday morning..."
"Three days!" Jacob was horrified. "Why so long?!"
Carlisle was surprised by Alice's discovery. He then let out a rush of air. "Three days is typically how long it takes for the transformation from human to vampire. I suppose the venom has to take time to change her internally… or perhaps it has just gone dormant and will try to resurface Friday which will wake her? Either way, we will have to work around this."
Edward nodded. "We were planning on camping Bella and Hannah out away from where the fight will be Thursday night. Since it's probably good we don't leave Hannah alone, we will keep her at camp with us. Alice sees her waking in the early morning so we will have time to calm her down while you all prepare to fight. Until then, we'll keep her in my room. I have a bed for her so she'll be more comfortable there until we go to the site." He frowned. "I would rather her stay at our house Friday for her safety and Bella's, but we need the whole pack and our family if we're going to win this battle, and I don't want Hannah waking alone. She will be very scared and confused about her new body."
Seth had returned to Hannah when he saw she was dressed. Leah hovered near her brother concerned he would break at any moment. She had heard while he was still a wolf his desire to stay with Hannah, but another urge to go find the redhead and destroy her.
He thankfully chose Hannah.
Seth pulled her up into his arms so she was no longer on the ground. She was so cool against him, even through her blanket and clothes. Not ice but like a brush of air on a hot summer day. His heat and her cold skin created a nice middle temperature. It helped calm Seth's agony only slightly.
He pressed his lips to her ashen forehead. He could since her body was changing slowly. Her skin was turning more pale by the minute. He whispered softly, "I'm so sorry… you were right… I'm so sorry I didn't stay…"
"Seth… I know you want to stay with her today," Leah said. "But mom is worried. Once you get her to the Cullens house please just come home for a little bit. You have to remember your health too."
Seth wanted to argue, but he knew she was right.
"Seth," Edward suddenly spoke, coming over. "Let me carry her. It will be faster if you and Jacob come with us in your wolf forms."
Seth held her closer. He pressed his face into her hair. He knew Edward was right though. And out of all the vampires, Edward was the one he found he could trust the most. He slowly handed Hannah over to him. She made no reaction as her body went from the warmth of Seth to the cold of Edward. She was in a comatose state. Seth wished it wasn't so.
"We're heading back to La Push," Sam said to Carlisle. "We'll see you soon. Thank you again."
Sam started to walk back into the woods. He noticed Embry, Quil, and Leah did not follow right away. "Come!" His order made them all flinch.
Leah went over and hugged her brother. "It will be okay," she whispered. She turned and followed Sam.
Quil and Embry tried to resist for just a moment. They looked at Hannah with agony. Quil stepped over to Edward, knowing he only had a second before the order from his Alpha would completely consume him. He gave her a gentle kiss on the side of her head. "Don't worry, Hannah…" he whispered. "Embry and I will always love you… Victoria's wrong… none of us will kill you… never."
Embry shut his eyes and tightened his fists. He managed to calm the pain in his heart and looked over at Edward. "Tell her we don't hate her… tell her that she still means so much to us… don't let her believe we're abandoning her again. Please..."
Edward nodded. "I'll tell her."
Quil and Embry left. Jacob and Seth had phased now and were prepared to follow the Cullens in their wolf forms.
"Let's go," Edward whispered. "I need to get Bella home before Charlie wakes up. And Carlisle needs to get to Billy."
They took off then back to the house. It took about ten minutes for them to get to the large mansion in the woods. Jacob and Seth shifted back into humans again as the Cullens headed inside. Jasper, Esme, and Rosalie were in the living room when they arrived. Bella was passed out on the couch asleep.
Esme covered her mouth in horror as she took in the unconscious girl in Edward's arms. Jasper stepped over to Alice who looked like she could cry if she was physically able. He pulled her into his arms and tried to send her comforting waves. Emmett stepped inside with his own dismay and hugged Rosalie who also looked heartbroken herself (she didn't care he was still soaked). Carlisle was the last to enter, and behind him came the two agonized wolves.
"It was too late," Esme whispered. "Wasn't it?"
Carlisle sighed. "By a hair… Victoria had just bit her when Alice and Emmett arrived with Quil. She escaped by jumping into the Hoh River. Emmett tried to pursue her but he lost her. She's smart… she knows how to block her scent." Carlisle continued back to the main topic. "Alice tried to suck the venom out like Edward had done to Bella last year, but it was too late… Hannah's wolf form took over and the venom was locked inside her. Her wolf genes kept the venom from destroying some of her human parts, but she is a mix of all three now… just as Alice saw…"
Esme stepped over to Edward, and she let the back of her hand brush against the young girl's pale cheek. "Poor girl… she must've been so scared…"
Rosalie spoke, her own voice in dismay. She felt sorry for the girl who had just lost her human life. "Why is she unconscious and not screaming? If she's a vampire-"
Edward answered. "The venom only attacked her for a few moments. Her wolf form was able to suppress the pain, and the human part of her was weakened. She fell unconscious as soon as she came out of her wolf form. She is only part vampire, so her body will still need to rest like the pack. Everything that happened to her was too much."
Esme asked softly, "When do you think she will wake?"
"Alice has already seen that," Carlisle answered. "Friday morning. Right before the fight."
Edward turned and handed the girl back to Seth. Seth took her eagerly. Edward then looked over at Emmett. "Show Seth and Jacob where my room is. I'm going to get Bella home."
Carlisle sighed. "I'm going to grab my supplies. I have some patients to tend to. It's a good thing I took off from work this week after all."
Esme asked, trying to get caught up, "What patients?"
Carlisle stepped over and hugged her. He could see she was upset and needed his arms for a brief moment. "Billy Black was injured trying to protect Hannah. And Collin and Brady were hurt too."
Esme gasped.
Carlisle tried to reassure her. "I'm sure they're fine. I'm just going to make sure for the pack's sake." He looked over at Jacob. "Do you want a ride or will you be running back?"
"Running… I promised Leah I'd drag Seth back too. We'll be there once Hannah is in bed…" Jacob turned to Seth. "Come on… let's get her comfortable." Emmett led them upstairs, while Carlisle disappeared into his study.
As Seth and Jacob stepped into Edward's tidy room, they saw the bed which had only been in the room for a few days. If Jacob wasn't so distraught over his sister, he probably would've questioned bitterly why a vampire needed a bed. However, he decided there were more important things to worry about than his jealousy towards Bella and Edward's relationship.
Emmett stepped over and pulled the comforter back to offer some small assistance. Seth settled Hannah on the soft mattress, and Jacob made sure her head was resting on the pillow properly. Emmett pulled the blanket over her, and left to give the two werewolves privacy.
There was silence in the room. Jacob knelt beside her, while Seth sat on the side of the bed brushing his hand through her darkening hair. He could feel it was becoming stronger… more permanent…
Seth gasped out a sob. He lowered himself to Hannah's face pressing his forehead to her own. "Hannah… I'm so sorry. I should've stayed… I should've listened to you…"
Jacob shut his eyes and placed his hand on her cool arm. As Seth cried, he whispered to his sister, "Victoria's wrong, Hannah… we won't kill you… we won't abandon you… we love you so much. So so much." His voice broke and he grabbed her limp hand giving it a squeeze. He could already feel her body was changing like Edward said. Her strength was greater than before.
They stayed with her for a good hour. Edward had delivered Bella home at that time and returned. He came in, seeing the torn wolves. "Carlisle called… he said Sam wants you both back now. I'll stay here until Bella wakes later this evening. But my family will be here as well even once I'm gone. We'll take care of her."
Jacob and Seth knew he was telling the truth. Seth kissed her on the forehead, and then whispered, "I'll be back, Hannah… I love you…"
Jacob took his turn once Seth pulled away. He kissed her on the forehead as well. "You're going to be okay, Sis… we're not leaving you… we love you too much to abandon you again. Just wait for us."
The run back to La Push was silent for both Jacob and Seth. They only had one thought on their mind, and they were leaving her because their Alpha wanted them home. Once they both got back to Jacob's home, they saw that Carlisle's car was still parked in the drive. Phasing into their human forms, they headed inside.
Jared and Paul were still standing in the living room, and Collin and Brady were sitting on the long sofa. Carlisle had wrapped up Brady's arm with some gauze, having to reset the elbow bone after it had healed wrong when he phased out of his wolf form. Collin had a scratch on his head that was healing, and his right foot was on the coffee table in front of him wrapped up too. He had also had to have his ankle reset which hurt like hell. When Jacob and Seth arrived, the two injured pack brothers looked at them with utter guilt and regret.
"Jake… Seth… we're so sorry… we tried so hard," Collin said. His voice was weak as he blamed himself for their failure to protect Hannah.
Brady cringed and shut his eyes. "We're the worst werewolves ever… we failed you all…"
Paul sighed. He had been trying to tell them to stop their pity party. Jared frowned wishing he knew what to say to cheer them up.
Surprisingly, Jacob spoke to them both with kindness. "Stop… You fought hard… Victoria has years of experience. You two just became werewolves last week. Don't blame yourselves… we watched through your minds your battle. You did all you could. Victoria is just too cunning and fast… she's always been. It's why none of us have killed her yet."
Seth found his voice too. "If anyone's to blame then it's me. I should've been here. Not you two."
Jacob sighed. "Seth… go home to your mom. She's probably worried. I'll come grab you when I head back to the Cullens later."
Seth nodded. He left to go see his mom. Leah had already gone home to talk to Sue and explain to her what happened.
Jacob left the room and headed down the hall where he could smell Carlisle, Sam, Embry, and Quil. His father was speaking, and this relieved him. He had been worried about his dad.
Jacob stepped in and saw his Dad's chair was folded up and against the wall. Sam was at the end of his dad's bed while Quil and Embry stood by the window across the room. Carlisle was in a wooden chair beside Billy, checking his pulse. Billy was in tears. He looked over at Jacob in exhaustion.
"Hannah… how is she…?"
Carlisle had told Billy they were too late when he had woken upon the vampire doctor's arrival. Billy had broken into sobs, and Carlisle was saddened as he heard the paternal figure cry for the child he had lost. Carlisle was a father himself and he knew what it felt like to believe that one had failed their child. He reassured Billy that he and his family would watch over her as she became used to her new form. Billy knew what he was saying though, beneath it all. Until Hannah controlled her thirst, it would not be safe for him to see her.
Jacob finally answered his father. His voice was heavy with pain. "She's still unconscious. She will be for the next few days… but she looks peaceful. I don't think she's in pain like other humans would be after being bitten. Jasper told me he feels nothing but exhaustion from her. Her transformation is going to be painless, so at least we can be reassured she isn't suffering."
Jacob stepped over to his father who was propped up by some pillows.
"She's in Edward's room being treated like a princess right now… the biggest bed I've ever seen," he said, trying to cheer his father up. He knew it was also to cheer himself up too. It wasn't working though. "I think she's going to be spoiled like crazy right now… you don't need to worry about her. We'll get her used to things when she wakes up, and then she'll be in your sight before you know it."
Billy shook his head. "No. I don't care if she is thirsty. When she wakes up I'm seeing my daughter."
Sam scowled. "That's out of the question!"
Carlisle also didn't agree. "It's best you wait, Billy. Hannah will be in pain if she isn't ready to see you. When a vampire thirsts, it's not pleasant. For your sake and Hannah's we need to wait until she's ready. But as soon as she's comfortable speaking we'll have her call you at least."
Billy wanted to argue again, but his head shot with pain and he shut his eyes. Carlisle went back to examining him. He pressed his hand to Billy's rib, and the man groaned.
Jacob cringed, hating to see his father in so much pain. "How bad is it?"
Billy grit his teeth. "You think that matters right now?"
Carlisle answered Jacob though. "He'll be okay. He's only bruised. His throat is tender from where Victoria held him, but thankfully nothing is broken. I don't want him moving his head much these next two days though. Actually," he looked back at Billy. "I want you to stay in bed for the next twenty-four hours. I can already tell you're going to be stubborn like your daughter was, but it's important you don't move too much. Your spine suffered some trauma as well."
Sam spoke. "We'll make sure he stays put. You all do the same with Hannah."
Jacob caught his meaning. His eyes narrowed as he started to understand Sam's thoughts towards Hannah. Sam only saw Hannah as a threat. She was no longer a teenage girl in his eyes, or Seth's imprint for that matter. She was his enemy.
Carlisle nodded. He pulled a prescription bottle out and handed it to Sam. "It's a muscle relaxer for the pain. Alice saw I would need it thankfully. Have him take it today." Carlisle stood and placed a hand on the dismayed father's shoulder. "Billy… I promise you that as long as Hannah is under my family's care we will watch over and protect her. She's in good hands. And you will see her again. Just be patient."
Carlisle left then, patting Jacob on the shoulder as he went and telling him, "Our doors are open for you to visit her in these next few days as much and as long as you need. Sam and I discussed having another training session tomorrow night. Only a few of us will be present this time. He wants you, and Seth to attend with Quil and Embry. He thinks you all need the distraction and I agree."
Jacob sighed. He knew Carlisle was right… no matter how much he wanted to be with Hannah they had to return focus to the threat at hand. And he was ready to end Victoria and her leech army once and for all.
Carlisle left then, telling Collin and Brady on the way out to not move until their injuries were fully healed. Collin saluted the vampire while Brady muttered about prison.
Once Carlisle was gone, and his car was out of range, Jacob turned to Sam with sudden fury. "I know what you're thinking Sam. I know what you all are thinking!" He looked over at his father who was staring at him now with exhaustion. "You can't banish Hannah from La Push! You can't put her on that side of the treaty! She's still human!" Jacob's tears had returned. "She's still my sister, damn it!"
Sam knew Jacob would react this way. "Jacob… I don't have a choice. And the council will agree… Hannah is part vampire now: She is a threat to the tribe. I'm not saying she is our enemy. I am just saying that she cannot come home. She is not permitted. The treaty stands that a Cullen cannot cross our line without permission."
"Then give her permission! And don't you dare call her a Cullen!"
Sam shut his eyes. "I can't permit it… I'm sorry… and I'm certain your father agrees."
Jacob looked at Billy with horror. His father hung his head. "I do… she can't live in La Push anymore, Jacob. But she will never stop being my daughter. She will always be Hannah Black."
Jacob was outraged. "So what?! Should I just pack her a bag right now?! Is that what you're saying? And what are we going to tell Rebecca and Rachel when they realize Hannah is nowhere to be seen? And Charlie?!"
Sam spoke. "For now, Hannah is visiting your aunt in Seattle… then once the newborns are killed and the threat is gone, we will say that Hannah came home upset and jumped from the cliff. The coast guard will search for her body, but they won't find her. We'll have a service for her at the local church, and then move on."
Jacob grabbed his hair in agony. "So… we make the world believe she's dead… Hannah becomes a ghost?"
"It has to be this way," Sam spoke. "For the good of the tribe, we have to let Hannah go…"
Jacob let out a snarl. He spun on his heel and stepped out of the room, heading down the hall to Hannah's bedroom. He walked over to her desk. Her window was still busted open. Air blew in. But her sketchbook was on the desk still. He picked it up with shaking hands. He ran his finger over the drawing she had done the other night. His wolf form… he sat at her desk and flipped through the pages.
She had started drawing again… she had started to finally be herself. Laughing… watching movies… turning back to her Disney addiction… slipping and cursing his name in the garage… he'd gotten his sister back for only a few days.
What would happen to Hannah when she woke up Friday and discovered what she had become? How would she feel when she learned she was banished from her home and being forced to live with the Cullens for the rest of her eternity? How would she react when she learned her family and friends were going to fake her death and move on with their lives?
He shouted in rage. He hugged the scrapbook to him as he realized his sister would never step foot in her room again. She would never go to their school again. She would cease to be to the people of La Push. She would become a Cullen and her time as a Quileute and child of the Black family would end.
Quil and Embry stepped inside hearing Jacob's pain. They stayed near their friend as he cried. They knew he needed to. They were already aware Seth was crying at home with his mom. Leah had called Jared to let him know that she would patrol once she had him calmed down.
After a moment of Jacob continuing to cry, Quil finally stepped over and placed a brotherly hand on his shoulder. "Jake… calm down…" He pulled the sketchbook from him and Jacob's hands fell limp in his lap. "Try to think of it this way… Hannah's not dead… she's going to live forever now. We never have to worry about her getting sick or dying again. She'll be living it up with millionaires for the rest of her existence."
Embry nodded. "She'll have trials, but she's strong, Jake. We know Hannah can get through this. She'll be scared and confused at first, but as long as she isn't alone she'll heal. We just have to be there for her when she needs us. It's going to be okay though. Alice even said so… she said Hannah would still have human needs. If she sees that, then clearly she will be okay in the future."
Jacob was calming.
Quil spoke again. He waved the sketchbook. "Let's pack some of Hannah's stuff up and take it to the Cullens. She'll be happier to have some pieces of home while she's there." He turned and started to gather her stuffed sandy dog and some pictures on her wall. He was trying to hold himself together, but as he stared at the pictures of their past he felt his heart clench too. Hannah's human life was over. He tried to shake the frown to stay strong for Jacob. He looked back at his friend who was staring at him with a broken gaze. "She has a suitcase in her closet, right?"
Jacob watched as Quil and Embry worked on packing a bag for Hannah. As they threw some of her favorite shirts and jeans in the black suitcase, and shoved her favorite books in as well, Jacob let out a heavy sigh. Standing, he helped them start to pack memorabilia of Hannah's past into the case.
He knew they were right. It was time to move on and look forward. He had to stay strong for Hannah right now. His sister would need him and Seth when she woke up. He wouldn't abandon her again. He would not let his sister suffer like she had back in February when he broke her heart.
He would stay by her side and be the brother she needed.
