Upstead (First Kiss)
Chapter 13
Hello guys! I want to start off by saying a big thank you to all the people who have posted a review. I always read all the reviews and try my best to incorporate everything that you ask for as long as it pertains to the story. Even without all that, I am always delighted to receive reviews. Now I am back with another chapter and the cliffhanger that I left you guys with, will run its course and you will see what happens. This chapter has a little of everything and I hope I have pulled it off. Hope you enjoy! :)
When Jay registered Hailey's words he was as shocked and surprised as her. He wondered the same thing like her, were his ears functioning properly? He placed the dishes on the table and went to the door hoping that this wasn't happening. But as he looked outside, he realised that this was very much happening. Abby was standing outside and he was looking at her. By his side he saw Hailey who looked as though someone had pulled out her intestines. But what the hell was Abby doing here anyway? Honestly, he didn't even want to find out. But as these thoughts were racing across his mind, Abby spoke, "There you are. I have been looking for you for a while Jay. How are you?"
After she spoke, it was clear to both Hailey and Jay that she was a little drunk. But the only words that came out of Jay's mouth at that point were, "What the hell are you doing here Abby?"
She responded as though it was the most obvious thing in the world, "I came to see you. You know how much I miss you. Finally I got an opportunity to meet you, so here I am."
Jay was more angry and frustrated than anything else. Whenever he shared a beautiful moment with Hailey something unpleasant came about. After their first kiss Hailey had been kidnapped by Booth and he had scarred her and she was still recovering from that pain. And now, after they had shared one of their best moments ever, this new problem presented itself and this one seemed to be a big one, because from the looks of it Abby was not going to back down. Whatever it was, Jay decided to end this right now. He didn't dare glance at Hailey because he knew exactly what expression would be on her face. He started, "Look Abby, I told you long back we are done. There is nothing between us and there never will be."
Abby simply smiled and kept looking at him. It seemed as though she was enjoying this and was highly amused by all of this. She looked at Hailey and asked, disgust evident on her face, "And who's this?"
It didn't take Jay more than a second to respond, "She's my girlfriend, so you better be careful."
At those words Hailey felt a pride she had never felt before. Jay had not only supported her but made it clear that she was his. Her heart was a little calm now and maybe this entire situation would simply blow off. But Abby couldn't help but let out a laugh. Hailey was slightly uncomfortable now, as confident as she was about all this, she didn't like Abby's presence and she certainly could not trust this girl. But she let the moment pass, deciding that the next awkward or unpleasant moment would not be gone by in her silence, she would react and make sure Abby knew who she was dealing with. But before anyone could understand anything, Abby approached Jay and pulled him for a kiss. It happened so fast that Jay was unable to react, but the moment he came back to his senses he pulled back immediately and glared at Abby, wondering if he should really hit a woman. But before he could complete his thought he heard a fist connecting with a jaw and the result was displayed in Abby sprawled on the ground. He turned towards Hailey and the satisfaction was evident on her face. What was more interesting was that there was not even a hint of regret on it, in fact, Hailey was proud of what she had done. Abby got up after a few seconds and said in a deep voice, "This isn't over."
Hailey was quick to respond, "We'll see about that. You can leave now."
And so she did. Abby was gone and it appeared that Hailey too was in a hurry to get out of here. As much as she had remained calm and decided to take the high road, she couldn't do that anymore. And she couldn't help but think about the fact that Jay had never told her he had a wife. That was disappointing and hurtful. Jay sensed that and grabbed her hands before she could start packing her things and leave. But Hailey was not thrilled by this gesture and she tried to free herself and for the first time Jay had to use force to prevent her actions. Both of them sensed that and looked at each, Hailey thinking that it was best if she left and they didn't talk about this and Jay certain that talking about this was the only way out of this. He spoke in a gentle tone, aware of Hailey's feelings at this moment, "Hailey, it isn't what it looks like. And she was drunk."
Hailey freed her hands and Jay let her do that. She looked at him and said evenly, "Jay I don't know what to believe anymore. It's really difficult for me to open up so much and end up with this kind of mess."
Jay was nodding and ready to speak, "I understand that Hailey, but there is nothing going on between me and Abby."
"Then why the hell did she come here!" Hailey couldn't stop herself from screaming.
"I don't know Hailey, and I don't care. All I care about is you and I want to make sure that you know it," Jay said, really meaning it.
"Then why didn't you tell me about her ever?" Hailey asked, secretly not ready to listen to the answer.
Jay looked defeated, whatever he said or tried was always blowing up in his face and the final point of all of it was that Hailey was losing her trust in him and he couldn't live with that. Nonetheless, he decided to take a bold step, "Hailey, that's not fair, and I think you know it."
He looked at Hailey hoping to get a reaction from her but she displayed none, so he continued, "Abby was part of my life when I was in the army, we were deployed together and the trauma and stress and worry of the job led to this marriage. And honestly, the marriage is over."
"Jay, I want to believe you, I really do. But I cannot let my heart go through another ache of this sort," she said, her voice heavy with emotion.
Jay looked at her painfully, understanding her hesitation and insecurity but not knowing what to do to get rid of them. He didn't know what to say, for the first time. Noticing this, Hailey approached him on her own accord and took his hand in hers and placed it over her heart, saying, "Do you hear this Jay? Do you hear these beats? My heart is beating for you. If you break it, I won't survive.
Jay was too emotional for words this time, he was overwhelmed by Hailey's honesty. He tried speaking, but words just didn't come out. Now Hailey placed her hand on his heart and said, "Please don't break it."
"Hailey…" was the only thing that could come out of his mouth. He was so moved by Hailey's sincere request that he didn't know what to say or do to even reach that level.
But after all this, Jay was genuinely relieved. Whatever it was, after all Hailey still trusted him and believed that this would work. And at this he didn't know how to react. Should he thank the gods for sending such a blessing to him or should he let Hailey know his current state which was absolutely indescribable? Or should he simply hold her and assure her this very second that it was all going to be fine?
Tears were glistening in Hailey's eyes now and Jay couldn't bear to look at her in this state. But he didn't know if it was best to approach her since he had used a little more force before and that had caused a slight tension. But before he could think of something else, Hailey was approaching him again, "Jay, please don't break my trust. I know you and that's why I know you aren't capable of doing something of the sort, but I still want to let you know that if you do that, I won't be able to take it."
Desperation was clear in Hailey's voice and Jay felt terrible that that this was happening again. Why couldn't he just give Hailey what she wanted without jumping through hoops all the time? She deserved so much better and he was going to make sure she got that. They were looking at each other intently but there was something else in Hailey's eyes today, there was a primary fear, a fear of losing what she loved most. As much as she had tried to remain calm about Abby's sudden arrival, her feathers were ruffled and she was insecure. And because of all these sudden changes she did what she did next. She pushed Jay against the wall of the living room and crashed her lips onto his. Jay was too surprised to react in any way, so it took him a moment to understand what was happening. But before he could even respond properly Hailey's hands were all over his chest, feeling his muscles and caressing his upper body. As far as Jay remembered, she had never been so physical before, and this first time, it did things to him that were out of his control. He was downright turned on and he knew this wouldn't last long if he didn't stop her. But Hailey could care less about what he felt, she was too involved in making sure that she got what she needed, and she needed a concrete proof that Jay was hers. She was kissing him passionately and by now Jay too was on the same page and they were both going at it without a care in the world. This kiss, this physicality, were both results of a desperateness, they needed to make sure that the other felt the same way, it was a needy and clingy sort of moment but much required for their relationship to last. Hailey's hands had reached the hem of his T-shirt but she didn't attempt to pull it over his head, only her hands touched his lower abdomen in the frantic movements and that made him weak in the knees. Hailey noticed that and decided to pull his T-shirt over his head, Jay ready and glad that this was moving forward. And the moment she placed her hands on his bare chest, it was fire for both of them, they were ignited and there was a surge through their bodies that was bound to light them up. Jay now losing all his rationality, reached for her T-shirt and pulled it over her head in one swift movement. Jay was utterly turned on by the sight and he pulled her closer and turned her towards the wall, now her back against it and him in front. His hands roamed her body in pure need and she arched herself for more. Finally Hailey couldn't take it anymore so she reached for his belt and began unbuckling his pants. Jay had to hold her so that he didn't lose his balance, because he was slowly losing all control. But suddenly, as much as Jay wanted this, a piercing thought entered his mind. Between his faltered and ragged breaths he managed asking, "Hailey, are you sure you want to do this?"
Hailey continuing her assault didn't quite listen to what he was saying but when the words registered in her brain she stopped short in the middle of her movements. It was evident that she too was turned on and had reached a point where only going forward was an option, but this question had stopped her in her tracks. She looked at Jay who had finally calmed his breathing, and he too was looking at her intently. She removed her hands from his belt and moved backwards, still looking at him. She picked up her T-shirt and pulled it over her head in a quick movement. She quickly glanced at herself in the mirror and straightened her hair. She picked up her things and headed for the door, still unsure of what to say. She settled on, "I am sorry," and left not looking back.
As she exited the building she couldn't stop crying. They had been so close but yet the distance seemed so far now. She had wanted it but Jay's words had her thinking if she would regret this. But she was so glad to see that Jay made sure of this before doing something neither of them could reverse.
Jay was still standing in his living room, T-shirt discarded and pant almost open. He was so ready for this next step but he had to ask her once. She had been subjected to her emotions at that time and it would be wrong if he would take advantage of her in those low moments, more importantly he wouldn't be able to live with himself if she ended up regretting what they did. That would shatter him. So he had asked and the night had ended painfully, but the bigger disaster had been averted.
This concludes yet another chapter and I will be waiting to hear back from you guys. It really means a lot when people comment and share their views. So, will be looking forward to feedback. Thank you for reading! :)
