This chapter takes a break from the main story and finally continues the flashback from the first chapter. So you may wanna reread that one first. The chapter in the game is called "The Brothers Drake" so I changed the name of it since Dipper and Mabel are brother and sister rather than two brothers.

Disclaimer: I own nothing that has to do with Uncharted or Gravity Falls.

Chapter 16: The Drake Twins

(A moped scooter rides up to a gate. Beyond it is a massive house with no lights on. A preteen Mabel drives the scooter with preteen Dipper sitting behind her. They observe the dark house.)

Mabel: Well... there it is.

Dipper: Who the hell lives here, anyway?

Mabel: I have no idea. But this is definitely the address. Been scoping the place out for the past few days. Looks like no one's home.

(She drives the scooter past the gate and up to the wall surrounding the place. The twins hop off and scale over the wall. They drop down into the complex.)

Mabel: And here we are.

(They notice how big the house and the property around it are.)

Dipper: (impressed) Whoa... This place is humongous. Where do we even start?

Mabel: (laughs) Well, we start by finding a way in. And then we can take the grand tour.

(They quietly approach the house.)

Dipper: You think this place has an alarm?

Mabel: Let's try and find a way in that doesn't involve breaking a window.

Dipper: Jeez... what do you think a place like this costs?

Mabel: I think knowing the answer would make you sad. Let's look around back, huh?

(They go around the house. Mabel spots a window up on a high ledge.)

Mabel: Hey, Dipper, look. It's an open window.

Dipper: Oh, yeah.

Mabel: Here, follow me.

(She climbs up a part of the house to get to the ledge. Dipper follows her and she helps him up. The reach the window and step through. Mabel turns on her flashlight and they see they're in an attic filled with large objects covered in white sheets.)

Mabel: Huh.

Dipper: Whoa. Spooky.

Mabel: Here. I brought a spare.

(She gives him a flashlight of his own. They start looking around.)

Dipper: So, are we looking for any particular room?

Mabel: Just keep an eye out for any books, journals, any kind of research papers, you know?

(They open some boxes and find camping gear but no books or document papers.)

Dipper: Hmm, nothing in here.

Mabel: Eh, it's not going to be in this attic. Boxes are filled with old traveling and camping equipment.

(She opens a hatch in the floor and reveals a ladder.)

Mabel: Down we go.

(They go down to the upper floor of the house. They go through rooms also filled with storage boxes.)

Dipper: So, how do we find them?

Mabel: What, Mom's notebooks? Don't you remember? She always used that off-white leather binding.

Dipper: I know, but it's such a large place. Like finding a needle in a hay stack.

(He finds one box laying around and opens it. A white leather book is inside.)

Dipper: (hopeful) Here we go. White leather. I think I found one.

Mabel: For real?

(Dipper reads the name on it.)

Dipper: (sighs) Nope. It's not one of Mom's.

Mabel: You got the right idea, though. Let's keep looking.

(They observe the rooms and the adjacent hallway and find with nothing but stacks of boxes.)

Mabel: Hey, these boxes remind you of anything?

Dipper: Every place we ever lived?

Mabel: (irritated) Exactly.

Dipper: (scoffs) I remember Dad always being like, "Why bother unpacking? We're just gonna move again in a month."

Mabel: Yep. Always the asshole.

(They search the room some more. Dipper finds an old Asian vase on a box.)

Dipper: (curious) Hey, Mabel. Call me crazy, but this looks like a Ming Dynasty vase.

Mabel: Dipper, who in their right mind would have a Ming Dynasty vase just sitting around like that?

Dipper: Yeah, it's probably a cheap knockoff of some kind.

(They find a door at the end of the hall and open it. On the other side is a hallway with various large artifacts along the wall.)

Mabel: (stunned) What the hell?

(Dipper shines his light on a large golden Egyptian coffin.)

Dipper: (stunned) Whoa. It's... some sort of sarcophagus.

Mabel: Yeah... look around... This whole place is filled with sarcophaguses... Or sarcophagi. I don't know what the correct term is.

(Dipper inspects it and realizes it's not a cheap knockoff.)

Dipper: Mabel... this is real.

Mabel: What is this place? Let's go find out.

(They observe the other coffin-like artifacts in the hall.)

Dipper: Huh, this one's Roman... third... maybe fourth century.

(Mabel sees one with statues of a man and a woman sitting on it.)

Mabel: Hey, you recognize that one?

Dipper: Uh... I've seen something like it before.

Mabel: Reclining figures... It's Etruscan.

Dipper: Ah... that's right.

Mabel: (smirks) Yeah, husband and wife... buried together. It's kind of dark... in like an awesome sort of way.

Dipper: (chuckles) Yeah.

Mabel: This place is like a damn museum.

Dipper: (laughs) Think they've got a dinosaur wing?

Mabel: Wouldn't surprise me.

(At the end of the hall is a staircase. They go down it and enter a big laundry room. Dipper finds another box with a white-leathered book inside.)

Dipper: Here's another one...

(He sees the name on it is not their mom's.)

Dipper: (disappointed) Nope.

Mabel: (jokingly) I do believe this is an ancient Mesopotamian washer/dryer combo.

(They both laugh.)

Mabel: I was the funny one. Always was.

(They enter the next room which is a storage room with has lots of gear and equipment on shelves. Mabel finds a pith helmet and puts it on.)

Mabel: (smiles) Hey, Dipper, check me out. Now who am I? Huh? Dr. Livingston, c'mon.

Dipper: (chuckles) Nice.

(They go to the next area which is a kitchen. Dipper finds a paper on the counter which is an invitation to a party at an expensive lodge.)

Dipper: Man... what I wouldn't give to get an invite like this.

(The siblings go in the large living room adjacent to the kitchen. Dipper finds a book on a table.)

Dipper: I just read this one.

Mabel: Oh, yeah? Is it any good?

Dipper: It's kind of incredible. It's about the first Mesopotamian woman to visit Lhasa. I'll get there myself one day.

(Dipper finds a globe on a table and spins it. Mabel comes up next to him.)

Mabel: So, where are we going?

Dipper: Huh?

Mabel: Well, if you could go anywhere in the world. Where would you pick?

Dipper: Anywhere?

Mabel: Anywhere.

(Dipper spins it and points at a random location.)

Dipper: Okay, well... Here we go... India.

Mabel: Yeah, we'll visit the Taj Mahal.

(Dipper spins and stops it again.)

Dipper: Round and round she goes... Russia. Let's go to Moscow.

Mabel: Might be a tad difficult to get in. Always wanted to see the Red Square though.

(He spins it again.)

Dipper: Let's try again... England. (sighs) Sure would be cool to see Windsor Castle... Right, Mabel?

Mabel: (annoyed) Hey, don't look at me. It's not my fault we couldn't afford both of us on the trip. It's not like I remember much of it anyways And... It wasn't that cool.

(Dipper spins once more.)

Dipper: Uh, huh... Okay... one last spin. Brazil.

Mabel: (excited) Hey, now you're talking! All kinds of undiscovered places in the rain forest.

Dipper: And all kinds of undiscovered tribes with poison darts.

Mabel: (skeptical) Yeah... that too.

(Dipper sees a mannequin wearing an old Roman helmet and armor. He takes the helmet off and puts it on his head.)

Dipper: Hey, check it out!

Mabel: (laughs) Hail, Caesar!

(He wears it for a moment and puts it back.)

Dipper: (sighs) It's hot in there.

(He finds a small statue of a naked being on a table.)

Dipper: Fertility totems.

Mabel: Hey, aren't we a little young to be looking at that stuff?

Dipper: Aren't we too young to be making that joke?

Mabel: Eh, never too young.

(They find a very wide dining table at the end of the living room.)

Dipper: Wow. This table's as big as the ones in the orphanage dining hall.

Mabel: I bet the food here was better.

Dipper: (chuckles) Wouldn't take much.

(They enter another hallway with numerous artifacts hanging on the walls and piles of books along the sides.)

Mabel: (amazed) Damn, they must've thrown some great parties in here.

Dipper: Judging by the artifacts... they certainly had enough money for it.

Mabel: Yeah. Looks like it's been a long time since the last one, though.

(Dipper finds another mannequin with a helmet. This one has horns.)

Dipper: Check out this crazy helmet.

Mabel: Ain't that a Viking helmet?

Dipper: Come on. You know Viking helmets didn't have horns. It's Persian.

Mabel: Oh. My bad.

Dipper: Can you imagine being the one to actually uncover these things?

Mabel: Heh... must be something, right?

(Dipper finds another box with a book. Instead of a white-leathered journal, it's about T.E. Lawrence.)

Dipper: Whoa... Lawrence of Arabia.

Mabel: Always wanted to see that flick. Never got around to it though.

(They come to another wide room with shelves and tables of miscellaneous items. A staircase leading to an upper floor is at the back. Dipper finds old suits of knight's armor.)

Dipper: Jousting armor. Looks French.

(He then finds an old gong.)

Dipper: A dragon gong. Huh. Looks like it's from Southeast Asia.

Mabel: Nice.

(He sees a suit of armor near by.)

Dipper: Samurai!

Mabel: You recognize the crest?

Dipper: Uh, hollyhock leaves are um... let's see... don't tell me... uh, Tokugawa clan!

Mabel: (smiles) Yeah, right you are!

(The two find an old set of sailing equipment on a shelf.)

Dipper: Look at these. Compass, sundial...

Mabel: Just imagine being lost at sea, and those instruments are the only thing standing between death and salvation.

Dipper: Yeah. It's crazy.

(He finds a letter on a desk written by a famous person.)

Dipper: (amazed) Oh, wow. They knew Amelia Earhart.

Mabel: (amazed) No kidding? Man, they knew all the cool people.

(Then they find an old record player with some classical records by it.)

Mabel: (smirks) Heh, nice. Liven the place up.

Dipper: Since when do you like classical music?

Mabel: 'Scuse me. I am a woman of many tastes.

(Dipper spots something by the fireplace. He sees it to be part of a letter with the top half burnt off.)

Mabel: Is that a letter?

Dipper: What's left of it.

(He reads what he can and learns that it's an offer to purchase the artifacts in the house.)

Dipper: Someone wanted to buy their stuff. Guess they said no.

Mabel: Not like they needed the money.

Dipper: I wouldn't want to part with this stuff either.

(Dipper then finds another book on another table.)

Dipper: Hey. They've got your favorite book here.

Mabel: Really? Which one?

Dipper: "A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates by Captain Charles Johnson".

Mabel: (scoffs) More like a generally made up history. Even the author's name is a fake.

Dipper: Fake or not, this looks like a first edition.

Mabel: (intrigued) Are you serious? This place, man... wow.

Dipper: Wanna take it with you?

Mabel: Nah. It'll just disintegrate in my backpack.

Dipper: You could sell it. Then you wouldn't need to take that job.

Mabel: (sighs) Tonight, let's just stick with what already belongs to us.

(They search the area some more until they've checked every corner.)

Mabel: Okay, I don't think Mom's journals are anywhere in here. Let's uh... let's check upstairs.

(They go up the stairs to the upper floor where there's a balcony with two doors. Dipper checks one. It doesn't open.)

Dipper: It's locked.

(Mabel checks the other. It's also locked.)

Mabel: Mom's stuff might be in one of these rooms. We gotta find another way in.

(She looks out from the balcony and spots a vent entrance high on a wall.)

Mabel: Hey, the air vent. Up there!

Dipper: Oh yeah. That could get us into the room below it.

Mabel: Not us. You.

Dipper: (confused) What?

Mabel: It'll be a learning experience for you. Can you handle it?

Dipper: (proudly) You kidding me? "Can I handle it?"

Mabel: Alright. Let's see what you got then.

(They head back down and prepare to push a shelf under the vent.)

Mabel: You ready?

(As they push it in place, a device falls from it.)

Mabel: Oh, whoops.

(Dipper picks it up and sees it's an old camera.)

Dipper: It's a Polaroid.

Mabel: Lemme see.

(Mabel takes it and inspects it.)

Mabel: I think it still works. C'mere.

(She puts her arm around her brother and holds the camera up.)

Mabel: Smile!

(She takes their picture. It comes out and she hands it to Dipper.)

Mabel: (chuckles) Don't lose it.

(Dipper shakes it until the image shows him and Mabel together smiling. He puts it away.)

Mabel: Okay, up here.

(Dipper starts to climb the shelf as Mabel holds it in place.)

Mabel: Hey, don't fall.

(He reaches the vent and opens it.)

Dipper: There.

Mabel: I'll see ya on the other side.

(Dipper climbs in and makes his way through the narrow space.)

Dipper: Okay. It's a good thing I'm not claustrophobic.

(He finds another entrance and exits through it. He drops down in one of the locked rooms.)

Dipper: Okay, I'm in.

(Mabel speaks from behind the door.)

Mabel: Can you get the door open?

(Dipper tries it but can't.)

Dipper: It's locked from this side too.

Mabel: Look around is there a key nearby?

Dipper: Hold on.

(He searches the room which is a bedroom with medical equipment. He sees several bottles of pills on a desk.)

Dipper: Lots of painkillers.

(He finds a note that's a letter addressed to someone named Evelyn.)

Dipper: (curious) Was this your house?

(He then finds an old key.)

Dipper: Got it.

(He takes it and unlocks the door where Mabel's waiting.)

Mabel: So... anything?

Dipper: Found a letter to someone named Evelyn. She must live here. Didn't see any journals though.

Mabel: Alright, well, we still got the other locked door. C'mon.

(They go to the other door and Dipper unlocks it. They enter a large office room with a desk, shelves, chairs and stacks of books all around.)

Dipper: (stunned) Oh, wow...

Mabel: (smiles) Journals galore... Well, let's see what we find.

(As she looks around, Dipper sees another box under the desk and opens it. He finds a white-leathered book and several documents all labeled with the initials, "C.M.")

Dipper: Whoa... Mabel.

Mabel: What, you got something?

(She goes over to him and sees the contents of the box. She excitedly grabs the documents.)

Mabel: (excited) This is it! (laughs) We found 'em!

(Dipper smiles and picks up the journal. As Mabel looks through the documents, he opens to a page with writings about pirate treasure.)

Dipper: (intrigued) Riches of paradise...? Henry Avery... Gunsway heist...

(Mabel sees what he's reading.)

Mabel: Oh, what do you got there?

Dipper: I've never seen this one.

Mabel: Yeah, me either. But that's definitely mom's handwriting.

(Suddenly, they hear the sound of a lamp turning on behind them and the room lights up a little. Then they hear a soft yet stern voice.)

Woman: (sternly) Put up your hands. Slowly.

(Startled, they turn around fast and see an elderly woman in a dark sweater holding a pistol. They put their hands up like she said.)

Mabel: (startled) Hey, hey, hey. There's no need for that.

(The woman lowers her gun.)

Woman: I won't shoot you now that I see you're just kids, but don't even think of going anywhere. I've already called the police. (coughs) If you run, they'll still find you.

Dipper: (nervous) You must be Evelyn... This is a nice place you've got.

(Evelyn sees the journal in his hands.)

Evelyn: What are you holding? (coughs) Give me my journal.

(Dipper holds the book with hesitation. Mabel holds out her hand.)

Mabel: (somberly) I'm sorry, Dipper.

(Dipper reluctantly hands her the journal and she gives it to Evelyn. The woman then sits down in a chair and puts the gun on a table while watching the twins carefully.)

Mabel: So, what now?

Evelyn: Now we wait for the police. They'll know what to do with you two.

Mabel: (calmly) Look, you don't want to have to deal with that headache...

Evelyn: Stop.

Mabel: C'mon, lady. We didn't break anything. It was no harm no foul, alright?

Evelyn: We all must face the consequences of our actions. Hmm?

Mabel: (sighs) Fine. I'll accept punishment. (points to Dipper) But at least let him go.

Dipper: (firmly) What? No. I'm not letting you-

Mabel: No, Dipper. I made you come.

Dipper: I agreed to.

Mabel: It was still my idea. (to Evelyn) I brought him down here so he could see our mom's stuff. That's it. He had nothing to do with this.

Evelyn: (stunned) What?

Mabel: I'm telling you that this is all on me.

Evelyn: No. Your mother's... stuff?

Mabel: (confused) Yeah... that journal... it was our mom's.

Evelyn: (shocked) My God... You're Cassandra Morgan's kids. Mabel and Mason.

Mabel: (sheepishly) Uh... hi.

Evelyn: (embarrassed) Oh, this is not how I imagined meeting you.

(The siblings become less anxious and approach the old woman.)

Dipper: (curious) You knew our mom?

Evelyn: (smiles) She worked for me. (coughs) As I'm sure you've noticed... I'm a collector of sorts.

Mabel: (chuckles) That's sort of an understatement.

Dipper: So... Mom was, like, your translator?

Evelyn: (meaningfully) Your mother... was the most brilliant historian I have ever met. We could have accomplished so much together. (solemnly) But then her illness it... I'm sorry.

Mabel: (smiles) It's all right. Happened a long time ago.

(Evelyn opens the journal to a certain page.)

Evelyn: Of all of her discoveries... this would have been her crowning achievement. (reading) "Sic parvis magna."

Dipper: (translates) Greatness from small beginnings.

Mabel: Sir Francis Drake's motto. Yeah, Latin and historical figures. Those were our dinner conversations. We were... a weird family.

Evelyn: Did she ever tell you her theories... regarding Sir Francis Drake and his heirs?

Mabel: (confused) Uh...

Dipper: (confused) Sir Francis Drake didn't have any heirs.

Mabel: Yeah.

Evelyn: That's what history tells us. But your mother and I believed otherwise. Learning that old pirate's secrets is one more adventure I have to let go. I guess there's a lot I have to let go... (sighs) Forgive me. Ramblings of an old woman.

Mabel: (sincerely) Well... we're sorry about breaking in here. If we knew you had her belongings, we would've asked you for them.

Evelyn: (smiles) It's all right. I would've let you have them anyway.

(She gives the journal back to Dipper.)

Evelyn: So here. It is as much yours as it is mine. Who knows? Perhaps one day you two will be able to finish what she started.

(The twins look at each other and consider her words. Then they hear sirens approaching and see red and blue lights outside.)

Mabel: (sheepishly) Ah... so uh... we're off the hook, right?

(Evelyn nods and stands up as Dipper puts their mom's stuff in Mabel's backpack.)

Evelyn: Of course. I'll handle the police. You found your way in. I trust you can see yourself out, hmm?

Mabel: (smiles) Yeah. Thanks for giving us the belongings. C'mon, Dipper. Let's go.

Dipper: (smiles) Nice meeting you.

(As they turn to leave, they hear Evelyn gasp. They turn back to her and see her standing still clutching her chest.)

Dipper: (concerned) Are you okay?

(She doesn't respond and instead exhales sharply and collapses on the ground.)

Mabel: (shocked) Holy, shit. No, no, no, no, no, no.

(Mabel frantically checks on her, but her eyes are closed and she's not breathing. She checks for a pulse, but there isn't one. There's a banging on the front door downstairs and a cop's voice is heard.)

Cop: Ma'am? It's the police! You all right?

Dipper: (worried) Mabel?

Mabel: Ah, crap. We gotta get the hell outta here.

Dipper: Wait, we have to do something.

Mabel: There's nothing we can do for her now. We have to run.

(The banging gets louder.)

Cop: Ma'am?

Mabel: Dipper, we gotta go right now!

(She grabs him and pulls him out of the room. She opens a window in the hallway and steps through. Dipper follows as the front door breaks down and the cops enter.)

Cop: Okay, let's search the place.

(The siblings scale the side of the house and get to the roof.)

Mabel: (whispers) Hurry.

Dipper: (whispers) Wait up.

(They see the police at the front of the house. On the other side is the front gate where they hid their scooter nearby.)

Mabel: The front gate looks clear.

Dipper: Okay.

(As get back down to the ground, Dipper trips and falls.)

Dipper: Agh!

Mabel: You all right?

(A cop who started patrolling around the house spots them.)

Cop: You there! Don't move!

(The two take off across the yard.)

Mabel: (urgently) Run for it! We can lose 'em!

(The cop follows them while talking in his radio.)

Cop: We've got two burglary suspects on foot. Both look juvenile...

(They run between bushes, trees and stone walls all around the house. Another cop joins the chase.)

Cop 2: Freeze! Down on the ground, hands on your head!

Cop 1: Stop, damn it!

(They keep across the complex to lose their pursuers.)

Mabel: C'mon! Go, go, go!

Dipper: (uneasy) Oh, God.

(They soon reach the main gate which is closed. Mabel throws her grappling hook up on the wall and climbs up fast.)

Mabel: C'mon!

Dipper: Okay!

(Dipper quickly joins her and she takes the hook back. The cops reach the wall and can't get up.)

Cop 1: Shit, they're bolting!

Cop 2: Go back around! Back to the main gate!

(They turn around as the kids drop down from the wall and approach their motor scooter.)

Mabel: On the bike, now!

(Mabel gets on and starts it up. Dipper gets on behind her.)

Mabel: Hold on!

(She peals away down the street and away from the house. They're already out of sight when the police reach the gate.)

(Eventually, they reach a desolate spot under a big bridge over a river outside the city. There's no one else around.)

Mabel: I'd say we're clear. Let's catch our breath a second.

(She stops the bike and they get off. Dipper stands by the water.)

Mabel: (sighs) Some night, huh?

Dipper: Some night. (gloomily) That poor lady...

(Mabel walks up to him and puts her arm around him.)

Mabel: (comfortingly) Hey... listen to me, that wasn't our fault back there. She was already very sick. It's okay to feel bad. There's was just nothing we could do about it. But we made her final moments worthwhile. She used them to remember Mom who she had a connection with just like us. And now we can say she's with Mom again.

Dipper: (smiles) Yeah, I guess you're right... (frowns) But she was going to exonerate us for breaking into her home. Thanks to some bad timing, we'll be found guilty of burglary. If they find us, we'll both be sent to juvie and never see each other again. So, what are we gonna do now? I can't go back the orphanage. You can't go back to your job...

(As he's talking, Mabel thinks heavily about things and comes to a decision.)

Mabel: (serious) Then we don't.

Dipper: (confused) What?

Mabel: We get as far away from this place as we possibly can.

Dipper: Yeah? And how long 'til the cops find us?

Mabel: Oh, I think they'll be looking for Mason and Mabel Morgan.

Dipper: Yeah, that's us.

Mabel: What if it wasn't?

(Dipper still looks at her confusingly so she continues speaking.)

Mabel: (meaningfully) Dipper, back at that mansion... you knew just as much about all that stuff as Evelyn. Here. I always felt that we were destined for something great, but I didn't know what that meant... until tonight.

(She takes their mom's journal out of her backpack.)

Mabel: This... Mom's unfinished work... This is our chance to restart our lives. With brand new identities.

Dipper: (bewildered) What are you talking about?

Mabel: Well, I know some guys. Pretty good at forging papers, too.

(She opens the journal to the page about Francis Drake.)

Mabel: Now as for our new name... Mom believed that Sir Francis Drake had heirs. (smirks) Who's to say he didn't?

Dipper: (astonished) You're serious, aren't you?

(She puts his hand on his shoulder and speaks meaningfully again.)

Mabel: Dipper, we were meant for this. And I promise... you and me, together? We're gonna go far.

(Then she extends her hand to him.)

Mabel: So what do you say... Dipper Drake?

(Dipper thinks deeply for a moment and then smiles and takes her hand making the decision that will change his life forever.)

And there you have it. Dipper and Mabel's origin story. They're not really descendants of Francis Drake. They instead pretend to be in honor of their mother. And since we don't know their mom's actual name in the show, I just gave her Nate and Sam's mom's name in the game. And that old lady wasn't recasted since she also only appears once.

Remember in chapter 4 when Dipper was in his attic and found that white-covered book with a photo sticking out of it? That was his mom's journal and the photo was the one of him and Mabel that they took in this chapter.

We get back to the main story next and it's straight forward to the end.
