Volterra, stopping Edward and arrival of the guards.

Elena's POV: (Opening thoughts)

I have never felt a plane ride go so long. Waiting to get to Italy, to try and save the life of the man who I haven't seen in months. Who I once loved, wondering that if I survive, will Bella, Jake and Damon ever forgive me.

We arrived in Italy by plane and we are now on our way to Volterra. I notice how fast and conspicuous the car is that Alice is currently driving. We are speeding past cars and tractors like they are turtles. Alice is covering all of her skin from the sun.

"So I'm guessing you didn't rent this car?" I ask implying she had stolen it.

"I figured you wouldn't be opposed to grand theft auto," she pointed out.

"Not today," I agree before I notice the sudden look her face had gotten. Same look she always gets when she is having a vision. "What? What do you see?"

She seems to begin to worry which does not show in her driving. Still makes me nervous that she is not seeing the road in front of her.

"They refused him," she informs me.

"So...?" I ask wanting details.

"He's gonna make a scene," he says and I begin to panic. "Show himself to the humans. "

"No!" I say knowing this will definitely get him killed. "When?"

"He's gonna wait till noon," he says and my eyes drift to the clock on the dashboard. "When the sun's at it's highest!"

I begin to stumble over my words as my panic levels go sky high. "Alice you've gotta hurry up."

"There's Volterra," she tells me and I glance at the city as we finally enter.

Alice beeps her horn as we try to race through the city and I begin to notice the common color in what people are wearing and they're seems to be lots of tourists.

It gets worse as we get further into the city as it seems to be packed so we cannot move as quickly They begin to make angry noises in Italian as Alice keeps beeping her horn and forcing them to part as we keep going.

I bring my knees up and put my hands to my head.

"Why are they all wearing red?" I ask as I keep worrying.

"San Marco's day festival," she explains but this means they're is going to be lots of people and they will all see Edward if we do not hurry up. "They're commemorating the expulsion of vampires in the city. It's the perfect setting. The volturi will never let him get far enough to reveal himself."

This does not make me feel any better. "We have five minutes!"

"You know Elena just breathe!" She tells me but I am struggling.

We get to the top of the hill but two guards stop Alice from going any further. Alice slams on the brakes and I get out but I notice that she didn't follow. I turn around and look back at her with the car door still open.

"Alice!" I say wondering why she has not got out when we are running out of time.

"Elena you're the only one he can't see coming," she reminds me. "If I go he'll read my thoughts. He'll think I'm lying. He'll rush into it."

I have to go alone. "Where do I go?"

"He'll be under the clocktower!" She says and I race off but she yells after me. "GO!"

I race up the next hill, not caring how my legs are protesting. I need to save him. He shouldn't feel guilty. I run around all the men and women wearing red. But there's so many.

I stop for a second hoping to see a sign. Then I see everyone heading towards the clocktower and begin to shove my way through all the people... and there is so many.

I come to some steps and turn around but know I do not have time to go back so I begin to run up the steps. When I get to the area where I can see the clocktower... I freeze.

There is thousands of people here. All here to celebrate Sans Marco day. I need to move.

I push angry people aside and force myself through the crowd. I see someone being carried on some sort of throne but I do no care as I carry on going. People stare at me as I continue to shove through them, until I reach a fountain and I can finally see under the clocktower. Where Edward is stood!

The clock hits 12. As the bell begins to toll I see Edward begin to take off his shirt. He is not looking anywhere is particular. I climb onto the fountain and jump into the water. Then I begin to run through it. When I get to the end I jump back out of the fountain.

Edward begins to step into the sun and I can see the sparkle begin to hit his skin. The sun is fully covering him just as I slam into his rock hard body and probably caused myself lots of bruises. I wrap my arms around his neck as I yell at him. "DON'T!"

"Heaven!" He says as he hugs me.

It felt weird hugging him again but I need to make him see sense.

"You have to move!" I tell him and I see his eyes are still closed. "Open your eyes, look at me! I'm alive! You have to move!"

He had finally opened his eyes as I say the last part and he sees me.

"Elena," he says as he pulls me into the clocktower building. He seems happy to see me. More happy than he should. "You're here!"

I breathe heavily as the running finally catches up with me and I hold my hair. I hadn't considered what I would say if I got this far.

"I'm here!" I confirm still shocked how happy he is to see me.

"You're alive," he says with his hands on my waist and there is a big smile on his face.

"Yes!" I confirm again as I pant and stare into his eyes I look down as I prepare to lose him again. "I needed to make you see me once. You had to know I was alive, so that you didn't have to feel guilty about anything. I can let you go now."

A pain look had appeared on his face as I had spoken and he now shakes his head. "I never acted out of guilt. I just couldn't live in a world where you didn't exist."

No, that's not true. He said I wasn't apart of his life anymore. He said he didn't want me. He didn't even flinch when I begged him to stay in Forks with me.

"Oh, but you said..." I say slowly not wanting to say what he did.

"I lied," he says and my broken heart begins to stitch back together with each word he says. "I had to lie. But you believed me so easily."

I am so shocked. But then there's Damon. No I never felt that way about Damon since Edward.

"Because it doesn't make sense for you to love me," I say to him. I always thought he could find someone better. "I'm a nothing human. Nothing."

"Elena...," he begins and he places his hand on my cheek which feels so weird after all these months. "You're everything to me. You're everything."

As he spoke our noses began to touch and for the first time in months we begin to kiss. His cold lips against mine is better than before... Because now I am certain he loves me. There is no doubt in my mind. When we seperate I open my eyes (Which I had closed lost in the moment).

Footsteps alert me and Edward to other people coming towards us. Edward turns me so I am against his chest as he begins to speak to the two red-eyed vampires that are in front of us.

"I won't be needing your services after all gentlemen," he tells them as he keeps me as close as possible.

One of them, who is holding a cloak, speaks to us. "Aro wishes to speak with you again."

"No rules were broken," Edward points out as I step back but keep a hold of his hand.

"Nonetheless we should take this conversation to a more appropriate venue," the other one says and he seems to be the more reasonable one.

"Fine," Edward says and I glance at his face to see he is worried. "Elena, why don't you go enjoy the rest of the festival."

I glance at him as I do not want to leave.

"The girl comes with us," the first guy informs him.

"No!" Edward says and I keep a firm grip on his hand not wanting to let go and he gets killed. "You can go to hell."

The lock suddenly breaks on the door behind us and Alice enters and takes off her sunglasses and the item covering her hair. Then she begins to speak casually.

"Come on, guys," she says as she steps to Edward's side and Edward and I glance at her. "It's a festival. You wouldn't want to make a scene."

"We wouldn't," the first one agrees.

Then a third person enters, a girl and I feel Edward tense as she lowers her hood. "Enough!"

"Jane," Edward says and he seems to surrender that I am going with him. Is she that bad.

"Aro sent me to see what was taking so long," she says and I see the two men are smirking.

She does not say a word as she turns around, is she just expecting us to follow? Edward keeps my hand as he begins to follow her and I glance at Alice.

"Just do as she says," she whispers.

As we carry on going we pass the men, who pass Edward a cloak to cover himself with. He takes it and I try not to worry about what might happen.

I may never see my family again.
