Almost Easy
Sabine was in her room at the Wren stronghold. It had only been about an hour since Ezra had left, but it felt like days. She thought back to what her mother had told her to try and comfort her.
"Don't worry daughter, if he does not return in the 12 hour time period, we shall go and find him." Ursa said, attempting to quell her daughter's anxiety. Deciding to not waste her time, Sabine stood and retrieved her bag of paints. Looking through the bag and around the room, she finally decided on a place to create her new masterpiece.
Hours had gone by when she received a message from Ezra's com. The message read, "I am at the mine entrance now. I am running a bit behind schedule though. I love you cya'rika." With that she laid the com down and picked up her brush again.
"Don't worry Sabine, he will be back soon, and we can all be happy together." Sabine spoke aloud to nobody.
The door behind her opened and her father walked in. "Sabine? How are you holding up?" Alrich said softly, not wanting to upset her.
"I think I'm fine father. It's just hard. Ezra was away for so long, even though I know he is still on the planet…" Sabine started.
"You don't know if he will return. I understand Sabine. I do, however, feel there is something more to this relationship than what you've told me and your mother." Alrich questioned. He did not speak in a chastising tone, more one of genuine curiosity.
"Daddy I-we, ugh, this is hard without Ezra here. I wanted to tell you in hopes you would spare him the trials. But I became afraid when mother seemed so disappointed with his presence." Sabine looked down at her feet embarrassed.
"Oh Sabine." Alrich soothed as he held his daughter. "You don't have to fear me or your mother. We love you and respect your choice to be with the young Jedi. Now, if you want to tell me you can, I won't tell your mother. I swear on my honor."
"I-I." Sabine broke down, "I can't say it. I don't know why, but I just can't." She cried in her father's arms.
"Then show me." Alrich said sitting up. "If you can't use your words, use your art."
Sabine rose to her feet and took her applicator out. Moving to the spot above her bed she got to work. Guessing his daughter was going to be there awhile, Alrich stood and walked out of the room with a smile on his face.
At around mid-afternoon, Alrich's comm went off. He knew it was time to return to Sabine's quarters. When he entered, he couldn't believe his eyes. Before him was a large mural, Ezra and Sabine holding hands with the emerald green blade in his right hand, and one of Sabine's WESTAR-35s in her left hand. Before them stood two smaller girls. One had Sabine's face and eyes with Ezra's dark hair, the other had Sabine's lighter hair with Ezra's eyes and an even mix of faces.
Alrich stepped back stunned. This was big. Looking over to his daughter who was fearing her father's response, he slowly made his way to her. When he was no less than two steps away, he opened his arms and hugged his daughter. "Does this mean I am going to be a grandfather?" He asked with hope in his voice.
"Yes." Sabine choked out as he hugged her again.
"Alrich, have you seen…" Ursa stopped when she saw her husband and her daughter in an embrace. Confused, she looked around the room, eyes stopping above Sabine's bed. There sat the painting, in all its glory. After about a minute of silence, Ursa put the pieces into place. The two holding hands, the small girls in front. Everything was falling together. "Sabine? What is this about."
Suddenly a man dressed in Wren colored armor walked in. "I apologize for the intrusion Countess, but the time frame for Bridger's return has passed. We need to send a search out for him." With that he left.
"We shall discuss this later, right now we need to go after him." Ursa said sternly. She turned and walked out the room leaving Sabine and Alrich to stare in confusion.
'Ezra was right.' Sabine chuckled to herself. 'Father loves the idea.'
"Come daughter, lets go find your Ezra." Alrich beamed with pride in his daughter and he guessed soon to be son-in-law.
"Well I think that was almost easy." Sabine looked up at her father. "The real challenge will be sharing the news with mother."
"Let's not worry right now. Ezra needs you, and if I'm reading that painting correctly, all three of you." He chuckled at his daughter's amused expression.
Ursa had already assembled a team to go after Ezra. Though she was portraying her disapproval of the situation, she couldn't have been happier for her daughter. Thinking back to when she walked into Sabine's room minutes ago, the mural came to mind. 'Is my daughter really pregnant with Bridger's child. No children.' Ursa thought to herself as she waited on her daughter.
"Sabine," Ursa called seeing her daughter approach the landing pad. Upon noticing her red cheeks, she knew it was time to reveal she knew. "Sabine, I know what that painting was of."
"Mother I swear we were gonna-…" Sabine was cut off when her mother raised a hand.
"Its alright Sabine. I know that whatever I say, you will be with him anyway. I also know that you are pregnant with twins." Ursa said in a surprisingly motherly tone.
"Mother, I know what you must think of me for this." Sabine was about to breakdown when her mother reached out and hugged her.
"I know why you waited. You wanted Ezra to pass the trials first. In reality, if you would have mentioned this sooner, I may have negated him the trials." Ursa said once again surprising Sabine.
"You mean it mother?" Seeing her mother nod in approval, Sabine lost all control of her tears. "Oh mother thank you. I know this breaks all traditions but I'm glad you approve."
"Of course, my child. I remember the way you two looked at each other when he left you here. You didn't want to leave him for Manda knows how long." Ursa comforted her oldest child. "Now. Let's go find your missing Jedi, shall we?" And with that they set off to the mine. The ships would take nearly 2 hours to get to the caves.
Sabine just hoped he was okay. She remembered back to his message, he ran into trouble with the bike and would be delayed. Was she overreacting? But what if Ezra was in trouble. He would have commed by now.
Suddenly Sabine dopped to the seat, holding her belly. It was ice cold.
"Sabine what is wrong?" Alrich questioned, fearing for her safety.
"Its Ezra, he's in trouble, the babies can sense it." Sabine shivered feeling the cold.
I really hate to leave you guys on another cliff hanger, but so is the nature of things. Next chapter will be fun to do. Just so you guys have a perspective of how far ahead I'm writing these. This will be chapter 13 and I wrote this the day chapter 10 went out. I'm trying to stay ahead since I have trips and a surgery coming up soon. I hope to have the story done by Christmas. As far as I know the theme remains unsolved. I will add a bigger hint in the next chapter, just keep an eye out. Till then TB out!
