Chapter 13

Christmas was coming quickly. Callie and Arizona have been dating for ten months and living together for three months of that. It was going good. Great even. There were a few hiccups, but overall, they were extremely happy. Callie's mom was currently on a plane from Miami to visit for a few days. Arizona had met Lucia over Skype a few times, but it would be the first time they would be face to face. She wasn't nervous persay, ok yes she was. She was almost shaking. She was busy cleaning the nearly perfect apartment.

Callie had had enough. 'Arizona, stop. The apartment is clean. I can eat off of the damn toilet seat. It's that clean in here. You have met my mom. She loves you. You know that. Please sit down and relax. Please.' Callie was practically begging at this point.

'Calliope, I am officially meeting your mother, in person. It is a big deal. She needs to like me. She needs to know that I keep a clean house and that her daughter is in a relationship with someone who deserves her.' Arizona argued back.

'What makes you think that I don't deserve you?'

'I…I…I…'

'Exactly. You are so wonderful Arizona. We are happy together. We have a beautiful home together. We are successful surgeons. What is so bad about that?'

Arizona takes a deep breath. 'You're right, Calliope. I'll try to calm down. I just want her to like me.'

'She loves you. She tells me all the time when we talk. She may love you more than me at this point.' Callie smiles.

Arizona puts away the cleaning supplies and plops down on the couch. 'When do we have to leave to pick her up?'

'About an hour. Let's watch some crap tv for a little bit. I'd love to cuddle on the couch with you.' Arizona leaned back and opened her arms so Callie could be wrapped in her arms. Callie sat down and curled into her. It calmed her down and they watched some baking show that was on the food channel.

When they left for the airport, Callie drove and Arizona's nerves returned. Her knee was bouncing a mile a minute. Callie placed her hand on Arizona's thigh and her leg stopped bouncing. It took about a half an hour to get to the airport. They were waiting near gate 34 with coffees in hand when Callie saw her mother pulling her luggage behind her.

'Mami!' Callie wrapped her mom in a hug. 'Come formally meet Arizona. She's super nervous, so be nice.'

'I'm always nice, Mija.' She turned her attention to the nervous blonde. 'Arizona…'

'Y…yes ma'am.'

'Don't you ma'am me.' Lucia said calmly. 'Come here.' Arizona took the couple steps towards her girlfriend's mother. Lucia reached out and pulled her into a bone crushing hug. Arizona was surprised, but returned the hug. 'It's so good to finally meet you. I am so glad I get to spend some time with my girls.'

Arizona smiled when Lucia called her one of her girls. She was nervous for nothing. It relaxed her instantly. 'Calliope, let's get your mom home.'

Callie smiled and grabbed her mom's luggage. Lucia had linked her arm with Arizona and started walking towards the exit. Arizona sat in the back of Callie's car on the drive back to the apartment and Callie looked at her in the rear view mirror and blew her a kiss. Arizona chuckled softly. She loved that woman.

It took no time for Lucia to get settled into one of the guest rooms. 'Mija, why is there a child's bed in the bedroom?'

'Oh, that is for Maci. You remember Amber from med school, right? It her daughter's bed.'

'Oh lovely. I haven't seen Amber in ages. How is she?'

'She's doing well. Her and her husband have been married almost a year which means me and Arizona have been together for almost a year.' Callie says.

'So when are you and Arizona getting married? You're not…'

'Don't. Say. It.' Callie says through gritted teeth. 'I am fully aware I am not getting any younger.'

'I'd marry Calliope tomorrow if she would have me.' Arizona tried to save her girlfriend.

Lucia's eyes lit up. 'Oh wonderful. Then I can have some grandkids.' Arizona then saw her mistake. She just opened the can of worms a lot wider.

'Mami, we will get married and have kids in time. Please do not add any pressure to us. Please?'

'Lo siento, Mija.'

'Gracias Mami. Now what do you want for dinner. We can go out or we can cook. It's your call. You're the guest.'

The rest of the evening was laid back. All three women helped to prepare a delicious dinner and Lucia went to bed early. She was still on Miami's time.

'Do you want to head to Joe's for a little bit?' Arizona asked.

'I would love to. I need a drink. I'm sorry about the questions. I told you. She puts pressure on me. I hate it.'

'She loves you and she grew up in a different time where a woman's role was to get married and have children. I'm sure she doesn't do it to make you feel bad or anything.' Arizona said softly.

'I guess. Let's head out. I'll leave a note in case she wakes up, but I think she is down for the night.'

They arrive at Joe's a few minutes later and it is packed. 'What is going on?' Callie asks. She was not aware of anything special that was happening that night.

'Torres! Robbins!' The women turn to the voice and they see Bailey with a crazy blue concoction in her glass.

'Bailey, what is going on and what is that drink? It looks like it glows in the dark.' Arizona scrunches her nose.

'New bartender. Yang. She just started and she is very generous with the alcohol. She made this for me. I don't know what's in it.' Bailey said.

'That explains the packed house.' Arizona said. 'Is there a table open?'

'Nope! Standing room.'

Callie wanted to relax. She pulled Arizona back out of the bar. 'Let's just take a walk.' Arizona went willingly.

It was Christmas and Lucia would be heading back to Miami the next day. They woke up and prepared breakfast together. While they were eating, there was a knock at the door. They weren't expecting anyone. Callie got up to see who was at the door. To her pleasant surprise, it was Maci. She picked up her favorite little lady and gave her a big Christmas kiss. She looked up and saw Amber at the door also.

'Cal, I know your mom is here, but I have been called in. Can Maci stay here with you for a little bit? There are too many snotty nose kids at daycare and I don't want her to get sick on Christmas.'

'Sure, yeah, no problem. We would love to keep her for a bit. Will you be coming back over after you're finished?' she asked her friend.

'I'm going to try to hurry, but yeah. I'll be back to pick her up. Tyler won't be back for another couple of days. We are doing Christmas then.' Amber looks back into the apartment. 'Hey Arizona. Hello Lucia. Nice to see you again.'

Lucia got up and hugged Amber. 'It is so good to see you too. I'm sorry I couldn't make it to the wedding. I'm going to have to meet this husband of yours at some point.'

'Yes. Next time. I promise. I have to run. They'll be paging me again.' As if on cue, there was another blaring of Amber's pager. Amber rolled her eyes. 'Gotta go. Love you all. Maci Lucia, be good for Callie and Arizona.'

'Yes, Mama. Love you.' Maci said.

When Amber left and Callie shut the door, she turned to her mom who had a weird expression on her face. 'What's wrong Mami?'

'Maci…Lucia?'

'Yes, Mami. Named after a very wonderful woman. Amber loves you Mami. She asked me if I would be ok with it. And it sounds so good together, doesn't it?'

'Yes, Mija. It does. Come here Maci Lucia. I am Abuela Lucia.' Lucia cooed at the little girl.

'What's an abeya?' Maci asked.

'Abuela is Spanish for grandmother. Like your Mama or Daddy's mom. Do you understand?' Callie asked. Maci nodded and curled into the older woman.

Callie and Arizona stood and watched Lucia interact with the small child. They share the same thought. One day, that will be their child with their abuela.

Amber is back a few hours later. It wasn't a serious emergency, but the more hands they had, the better. She knocked once again on Callie's door. Callie slips out of the door and looks very nervous.

'What did you do to my child?' Amber asks.

'What?' Callie asks. 'Nothing, but I do need her help. And yours.'

'Ok… with what?'

'I'm going to ask Arizona to marry me…Like right now. I want Maci to ask her. Do you think she can handle that? It was her wish after all.'

'She can handle it. What do I need to do?'

'Distract Arizona.' Callie says. 'Me and Maci need to rehearse once or twice.'

'What should I do with her? It's Christmas. Nothing is open.'

'Tell her you need her help…You're having problems with Tyler.'

'Ok. I guess I can make something up.' Amber says.

'Great, I'll poke my head out or something when I'm ready.'

'Send Arizona out. This is going to be awesome!'

'Look sad. You are having marital problems.' Callie glared.

'Right.' Amber slips her phone out of her bag and sends a text to Tyler. Pull over. It's happening. This is not a drill. I will video call.

Arizona came out into the hallway a minute later just as she put her phone back. 'Amber, Callie said you needed me. What's going on?'

'Oh, well, um. Yeah. I needed some, um, advice. Since you and Tyler grew up together, I figured it was best to ask you about this.' Amber got out. She was not good at lying.

'Ok, what's up?'

'Ok, so you know how he sometimes changes his mind like a million times before he decides on something?'

'Yes! He was never allowed to pick what game we played. It took forever!' Arizona laughed.

'Yeah, ok. So I was worried that he was going to change his mind about us and I brought it up the other day and it created this massive argument. I mean like the biggest argument we ever had. I have never seen him that upset. It was like he was a different person and it scared me. He questioned everything that I ever felt for him. It was terrible.' she rambled out. She hoped it was a believable story.

'Wow, ok. So has he talked to you since then?'

'Barely, the conversation is different. I…' she was cut off by the door opening. 'Nevermind. We can talk later. Let's go inside.'

Arizona was clearly confused, but went inside anyway. There were candles lit all over the living room and Callie and Maci were standing in the middle of the living room surrounded by candles. Amber followed Arizona into the living room with a smile on her face and stood next to Lucia. She quickly video calls Tyler and places her finger on her lips so that he will not say anything. Arizona looked back at them and Amber winked at her.

'Calliope, what is going on?'

'Maci has something to say to you, Arizona. Go ahead Maci.'

The little girl cleared her throat and began speaking slowly. Even with her three short years of life experience, she understood the importance of this question. 'Arizona.' she started. 'I wished for this on my birthday and I was VERY patient just like Mama told me. I don't want to be patient anymore. Will you marry Callie?'

Arizona looked up to Callie and there were tears in both of their eyes. 'Is…are… Callie is this for real?'

Callie nods. Maci then holds out the ring box that was behind her back. Arizona looks at the ring. It is beautiful. She slowly starts to nod her head. Callie beams with her megawatt smile. 'Yes?'

'Yes, Calliope. Of course I will marry you!'

Callie lifts Maci over the candles and she runs to her Mama. Callie steps over the small flames as well and slides the ring on Arizona's finger. It was a perfect fit. They share a kiss. Lucia, Amber, and Maci watch the scene and smile.

'I did it, Mama. I was patient. Now they are getting married.' Maci beams up to her mother.

'I am so proud of you Goober. You did such a good job.'

Arizona turned to Amber. 'So you and Tyler…' she trailed off.

'Perfectly fine.' Amber says. She turns her phone around. Arizona sees Tyler's face on her screen. He is grinning from ear to ear. 'Congratulations, Arizona. I am glad I got to share in this moment. And Maci…' Amber turns the phone back to her. 'You did an excellent job. I gotta get back on the road now. I'll see you in a couple of days. Love you all.'

'Bye, Tyler.' 'Bye, Daddy.' 'Love you' the group said.

Arizona turns to the little girl. 'You wished for us to get married on your birthday?'

'Yes, Zona. You and Callie need to be married. I want more cousins.' the group laughs at the little girl.

'You are just as bad as your abuela.' Arizona said.

'Abuela?' Amber asks.

'You called her Maci Lucia. I was pretty quick to put it together, Amber.' Lucia said. 'I am her abuela.'

Amber smiles and hugs the older woman. She turns to the newly engaged couple. 'So, you're getting married!'

'WE'RE GETTING MARRIED.' Callie and Arizona shout together.
