The Bond
Even though I'm not a huge football fan, Katie and I went to the game that week. After all, there isn't much to do around here I nothing else, we'd have fun making fun of the cheerleader and the other side. Embry and Quil played on the team, but both had to make sure they weren't too powerful. In fact, the lengths they went to keep the secret were funny- but neither liked losing.
"Hey Seth, are you here to see Uncle Embry and Quil?" asked Claire.
"Yes. Claire, this is Katie."
"Hi Katie, I'm Claire."
"What grade are you in" asked Katie
"Third" said Claire, "look out for Quil, he is number 34. Embry is 35. There he is," she began waiving.
"Hey Claire, thanks for coming over," said Embry as he came towards the fence. "Quil is playing, but I'll tell him I saw you."
"I know, he's got the ball and he's about to score." Said Claire
"What a run, ladies and gentlemen! The Eagles score a touchdown bringing the score to 21-7! Fifty-five yards in just a few seconds and he is only a junior."
Claire and Embry were cheering. Claire was now on Embry's shoulders and high fiving most of the team.
"Is that his sister?" asked Katie
"No, Quil Imprinted on Claire a few years ago," I said. I laugh as Katie's jaw hit the ground.
"That would mean Claire was two or three? It can happen that young? That must be kind of weird."
"Believe me, it caught everyone by surprise. Quil could barely believe it. Sam went a little crazy. Claire's mom was not thrilled. But over time, things have gotten better. You see an imprint becomes whatever the person needs them to be- a protector, a brother, a friend, and maybe a lover, though that doesn't always happen. I think people forget there are different types of love."
"That's true," said Katie. "I worry about people freaking out because we are seventeen. And if what you say is true, people will talk. But at least we will be one of those couples who met young."
"The good news is that you don't have to look for Mister Right," I said, pulling Katie toward me to for a quick kiss.
"Because you are Mr. Right, my night in armor. But just so you know, don't fight my battles for me. I'm capable of doing it myself."
"Yes, of course you are," I said. Katie hit me on the arm.
"Don't patronize me. I can take you." said Katie
"She definitely can," said a voice.
"Hey Lisa," said Katie, "How are you?"
"Fine," she said as the place erupted in cheers.
"Touchdown Eagles. This brings the score to 35-7," said the announcer.
"Well, Quil and Embry are certainly showing off," said Lisa. "Two touchdowns both ran the ball at least forty yards. The other guys didn't even slow them down. Sam is not going to be happy."
"Why?" asked Katie, "Most people would be thrilled. Isn't this the sort of run that people talk about for years? If nothing else, it might even open up a college scholarship for them."
"It will be ok. Talk to them at a halftime and tell them to tone it down. Don't call Sam. Let them have this."
"I don't understand the problem." Said Katie.
"You know the problem," said Lisa.
"No, I don't" said Katie, "All I see are a bunch of ecstatic people. And two amazing athletes who are having a ball. And if this can get them to college, then wonderful. And it is awesome."
"I guess he hasn't told you anything yet. There is more to this than just Imprinting. It never should have happened outside the tribe. I guess he doesn't trust you yet. You just ask him about the wolves, about Emily's face."
"Katie let's go get a drink. It's about to be halftime."
"Sure," said Katie, but I could tell she was a little puzzled by Lisa's attitude. The truth is that I know that Sam and a lot of other people wished I'd imprinted on her. The thing is- I never liked her. And she is very bitter.
"Don't worry about her. She's always been that way. She's never happy."
"Seth, I know there is something going on with this whole thing. There is more to the imprinting thing. I want to know the rest. After all, the bond is getting stronger every day- you can feel my headache. You do not want me mad- the headache gets worse and you will feel it. So, I suggest you start talking."
"Ok, I'll talk, but let's get snacks first. I'm hungry. I can't reveal secrets on an empty stomach."
"Great," said Katie, as we walked toward the concession stand.
"What are you in the mood for?" asked Seth
"what do they have?" asked Katie
"Want to split some Nachos?"
"Sure. I also want a diet coke. Want to split some Raisenets?"
"Wait a second, I didn't see that the Sno-Cone people were here."
"Let's go for it. I'll even spring for the refillable cups. We can bring them to other places and the refills are cheaper." I said.
"And no, Katie, I've got this covered," I said as Katie tried to hand me money for the snow-cones.
"Hey, Seth," said Bella, how are you? And who is this?
"I'm Katie Blake," said Katie extending her hand.
"Bella Cullen," she said, "I'm Nessie's mom. She had a great time the other night. We all did
"Yes, it was amazing." said Katie.
"Did you see the mascot?" asked Bella.
"Not yet,"
"Come on then, you have to see this," said Nessie grabbing my arm. She pulled us over to the mascot. "Who do you think it is?"
"No clue? Said Katie.
"It's Emmet."
Emmet is in the Eagle Suit. He's desperately trying to do a complicated dance routine with the cheerleaders, but it isn't going well. He tried to do follow moves with the wings but kept getting tangled up. It is just funny. I looked around and Claire and Nessie had run up to the fence and tried to help. It didn't work.
Katie, Nessie, Bella, Claire, and I, spent the second half watching Quil and Embry try to stop scoring and watching Emmett. We didn't have a chance to talk more. I'm glad the meeting with Sam is tomorrow. I can't make it another week without letting the secret slip. Katie is going to figure it out. I just hope she won't be mad at me.
