Gus looked like he was a bundle of nerves when Adam came down ready for their run. He was bouncing from foot to foot and dropped his phone down on the bench when Adam spoke. "You okay Bud?"
"Yeah." He mumbled and charged out the door. He set the pace early and Adam struggled to keep up until he eventually slowed down to a more acceptable pace.
"Okay Gus, spit it out." Adam asked once he'd caught his breath a little.
"Imogen was telling her parents." Gus finally admitted. He'd talked to her late last night to tell her that his parent's knew and he promised her that they wouldn't say anything and he didn't tell them who the father was but they knew it wasn't him. Imogen told him that she would tell her parents but he had no idea if she had or not.
"And how did that go?"
"I don't know. I haven't heard anything."
"Okay." Adam puffed, struggling to catch his breath.
"I'm just worried Dad."
"Okay."
He honestly had no idea what to say right now. He wanted to tell Gus to distance himself from all of this but there was no way he would now. That much he knew about his son. Gus wanted to be a cop, he was going to be a different cop to his Dad, probably more like his Mom and that wasn't a bad thing.
"Is Mom okay?"
"Worried about you, like I am. We don't know what you want from us right now."
Gus increased his pace a little and Adam tried to go with him. They ran for a while before Gus slowed and stopped. "I don't know Dad, I don't know what I am doing but I can't just walk away."
"Angus, I get it but it's not your problem. It's Imogen's problem and whoever the father is and their parents. There is a lot of issues Gus. For one, they are fifteen, I assume the Dad is fifteen, if he's any older it is illegal and I can't look away from that and neither can your mother."
"You were sixteen."
"I know, that's not the point right now Gus."
They turned for home and set off at a slower pace. "It's not mine Dad I promise I am not lying. I wouldn't lie about that Dad, I swear."
"I'm glad to hear it and we believe you completely." Adam assured him. "That's not our issue Gus."
Kim was barely out of the shower when she heard the doorbell ring. She knew that Adam and Gus were out running and Polly had stayed at Sam's last night. They'd had a party for one of Sam's friends and it was pretty well established that they either stayed at his place or theirs on weekends. As long as Polly let them know what the plan was they were happy with that.
She didn't expect to see Gus's latest pet project, Imogen on their doorstep who proceeded to burst into tears. Kim ushered her inside. "Are you okay?"
"My parents…" she sobbed. "…they told me to leave."
"Oh sweetheart." Kim slipped an arm around her shoulder and lead her to the lounge room. Sitting down beside her Imogen collapsed against Kim.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know where else to go. Is Gus here?"
"Are you okay? Do you need a drink or something?" Kim was still trying to get her head all this. It wasn't even twenty-four hours since she'd seen the pregnancy test and it had been a wild ride ever since. She'd barely spoken to Adam this morning, he was keen to get up and out with Gus to see how he was fairing and Adam was desperate to get him alone and when they were running was when he got the most out of Gus. At the moment that was their concern. They had to be worried about their own son first and foremost.
They'd already had one child crash and burn spectacularly and they were desperate not to have it happen again. Nor did they want anyone else's kid crashing and burning on their doorstep either.
"No thank you Mrs Ruzek."
"Gus told us that he's not the father and we believe him." Kim did believe Gus, he wasn't a deceitful kid and he'd promised Adam that he wasn't lying and Adam stared him down. If Gus was lying he would've crumbled and he didn't. "He's not here right now. He's out with his Dad."
"Gus has been great." Imogen gave her a watery smile. "He's helped me a lot."
"He's a very sweet kid, but he's just a kid Imogen and so are you." Kim squeezed her hand. "Firstly, are you okay? Nobody is hurting you are they? And you are sure you are pregnant?"
"Yes. I think so. I did a test. I haven't had a period for four months and my boobs are growing, I've got this." She lifted her shirt and leant back showing Kim her protruding belly. This pregnancy was a lot further along than Kim expected.
"Oh Imogen, have you been to see a Doctor?"
"No."
"I think that might be wise." Kim suggested. "It's really important that you see a Doctor to make sure everything is okay. Pregnancy is hard on your body, you need to be taking pre-natal vitamins and looking after yourself. You are very young, you are still growing yourself, this is not going to be easy on you. You need to make sure you are eating enough and good food. Do you know what foods you can and can't eat?" Kim wanted to make sure that Imogen knew how much of a big deal this was. It took her months to get over her pregnancies and she wasn't a teenager and had good prenatal care from the start, not four months of ignoring it.
"I don't know what to do."
Adam and Gus were surprised to see Imogen sitting in their lounge room. Kim didn't look impressed and glared at Gus in particular and Adam cringed a little. Sadly he knew that he was going to have to cop a good Kim rant later on. She felt like she'd been thrust into the middle of this whether she wanted to be or not. Gus ignored his mother and tried to gauge his father's mood with a quick look. It wasn't great either.
"Did you tell your folks?" He decided to focus on Imogen when he copped his father's glare.
"Yes. They are not happy."
Gus looked at his parents. He'd hate to see them if it was actually his kid, because right now they looked like they would self-combust. "I guess not."
"I'm sorry Gus."
"For what?"
Imogen looked at him and gasped. "I couldn't tell them."
"That you were pregnant?"
"No, I couldn't tell them who…."
A sense of dread washed over Kim and Adam looked like he was about to flip his lid. She had the feeling that this girl was planning on pinning it all on their son knowing full well that Gus was a pushover. Gus wasn't having it though and Kim was proud of him. "I'm not taking the blame for this. I'm trying to help you but you aren't putting this on me." He was pissed. "You need to tell your parents and you need to tell Jack."
"Jack?" Adam spluttered. "Fan..bloody..tastic."
Jack had become a bit of a handful. He had been a bit of wet blanket for a while, hanging off Gus's coat tails until he suddenly grew a bit and started to rebel against his ultra-strict, ultra conservative, very religious upbringing. They knew Jack's parents socially and were very aware that they found Adam and Kim's parenting style sub-optimal. The fact they let Polly sleep with her boyfriend under their roof was a black mark against their name.
"I can't."
"Hold on." Adam interrupted. "I'm sorry Imogen. This is not Gus's responsibility, you aren't doing this to him. We are willing to help but that only goes so far." Kim wasn't particularly happy with Adam right now and neither was Gus but he wasn't letting him get blamed for something that wasn't his problem. There was a limit to their generosity and taking on the responsibility of a pregnant fifteen year old was not one of them.
"Shut up Dad." Gus snapped at his father. He grabbed Imogen's hand and pulled her up off the couch and starting heading upstairs.
"Where the hell do you think you are going?" Adam demanded. "Angus, I swear…"
He completely ignored his father and stomped up the stairs, slamming his bedroom door behind him.
"Are you right?" Kim turned on him.
"What?" Adam threw his hands up in the air. "Are you happy with that?" He pointed upstairs. "You know what's going on? She's going to tell her parents it's Gus's because he's a soft touch and that little shit Jack will get away with it and I am not taking responsibility for another bloody kid's mistakes."
"Calm down will you. You are not helping. Being a hardass isn't going to make Gus see sense, you know what he's like, he'll dig his heels in. He's as stubborn and pig-headed as you" Kim poked Adam in the chest. "This is not helping. Go take a shower and calm the fuck down."
It was like Déjà vu watching Adam stalk up the stairs exactly like Gus had just done. Kim rubbed her hands over her face. It wasn't that she didn't agree with Adam, she was not happy about the whole turn of events but she knew going off the deep end at Gus wouldn't help even though she just wanted to march up the stairs and slap some sense into him.
Polly chose the wrong time to come home with Sam. "Hey Mom." She tossed her bag on the bench and Sam perched up at the kitchen bench like he usually did. Polly was just stopping by home to grab a change of clothes and her swimmers as they decided to spend the day down at the lake.
Kim smiled tightly. "Polly I suggest you get your stuff and leave unless you want to get ranted at."
"What's up with Dad?" Polly knew pretty much straight away who her mother was talking about. There was only person who's rants came with a warning.
"He's on a tear. Gus is here with Imogen."
"Who?"
"Imogen, don't know her last name. The owner of the pregnancy test."
"Oh." Sam gasped and patted Polly on the leg. "Get your stuff Pol." He really wasn't in the mood for an Adam rant and it would be a good one and much of it would be directed at him.
Polly didn't seem to be in much of a rush. She wanted the goss. "Gus?"
"No, not Gus, but you know how he likes to rescue damsels in distress." Kim breathed deeply. "Anyway, I think you'd be better off not being here."
She dashed upstairs to grab her things and left Sam downstairs talking to Kim. "Gus doesn't know when to take a step back does he?"
"No, no he doesn't." Kim sighed. "Has he said anything to you? Like about Imogen or anyone else?"
"Nope." Sam didn't know anything about her but assumed she'd be cute and full of drama. That seemed to be Gus's type.
They didn't make it because Adam heard Polly in her bedroom and pounced on her as soon as she opened her door. "Dad, I've got it." Both Sam and Kim heard Polly talking to her Dad as they came down the stairs. "Relax."
"I can't fucking relax Polly."
Sam did consider bolting for the back door but knew that was gutless and he'd probably chase him down and tackle him to the ground anyway. "Hey Adam." He chirped.
"Yeah, whatever." He waved his hand and went in search of a cup of coffee. He turned to face his daughter and her boyfriend. "So, now or later?" He gave them the choice of enduring the lecture now or they could cop it when they got home.
"Now." Polly grinned at Sam.
"Condoms? Are you still using them or can't be bothered anymore?" He waved his free hand around like a madman and got straight to the point.
"Depends on the moment Dad." Polly smirked which went down like a lead balloon and Kim gave her a sharp look. Sam was regretting not making a run for it. He was young, he probably could've made it and it didn't look like Adam was currently armed which would have increased his odds.
"Smart ass. Seriously. That's it…" Adam snapped. "… no more sex in my house. I don't want sex in my house anymore, I don't want even the hint of sex, a touch up, a grope or snogging in the corner. Sam can wait on the couch for you to come down, he's not allowed in your bedroom, no showering together, no sleeping together. None."
"Does that include us?" Kim was amused. She expected Adam to get a little wild but that was just stupid.
"Yes." He snarled.
"You are an idiot Dad, and no. That isn't going to happen, but we are careful. We are not stupid and you know Gus isn't either. Just because he's friends are stupid, Gus isn't. I'm pretty sure the only vagina he's seen was from a book or on the internet. His real life experience with girls seems to be holding hands. He's actually useless."
"Can you stop talking?" Adam hissed.
"Yes, please do." Sam agreed as he jumped off the stool and grabbed Polly's hand. "Let's go."
"I'm not finished."
"Yes you are." Kim glared at him. "Go, have fun." She waved them out the door before turning to Adam. "Impressive."
"What?"
"How long do you think you'd last if I said, okay. No sex. Can you stop being ridiculous for just a moment and talk to me about what we are going to do about that mess upstairs? Rationally, put idiot Adam away and give me smart Adam for just a moment."
"I'm not feeling very rational right now."
Kim topped up his coffee. "Drink this then and sit there and shut up." She pointed to the bench. "While I cook you something to eat and then we can talk."
Adam grumbled away but appreciated the coffee, the food and the chance to talk to Kim. "Where is he? Still holed up stairs. At least I know the damage has been done so there is no chance he's slipping one in right now."
"Just stop." Kim warned him.
"Sorry. I kinda thought we'd go through this with Pol, and then when all that shit went down with Abbey I kinda thought okay, that's the teenage drama out of the way. This, I didn't expect."
"You honestly didn't think we'd get through Gus's teenage years scot free?"
"Nope, course not. I was just hoping we had a few more years yet. I'm barely over the Polly Apocalypse."
Kim came and stood beside him and leant on his shoulder as Adam slipped his arm around her waist. "Love you Darlin'." Adam dug his fingers in, pulling her closer. "And no, the no sex rule doesn't apply to us. We pay the bills, we can do what we want."
She jumped suddenly when Gus came downstairs. "Can I get you something to eat Sweetheart."
"Nah, I'm good." He stood awkwardly a few steps away from them and looked nervous. "Imogen's parents are coming over."
"Angus." Adam sighed.
"Dad." His voice wobbled a tiny bit. "They are pissed and she's too scared to go home and I thought if they came here you might be able to kinda, stop it getting outta hand."
Kim came and stood beside Angus and rubbed his back. "Okay. What time?"
"They are on their way." He looked at his Dad who was just staring straight ahead and sipped his coffee, it was wise to take a breath. "She's going to tell them it's Jack's not mine. That was the deal I made. If she wanted to do this here then that was the deal."
"Okay." Adam nodded. "You need to go up and send Imogen down here and you can have a shower please."
He looked at his Mom, Gus was worried about Imogen being down here alone but Kim wasn't budging either.
Kim followed Gus upstairs and asked Imogen to come out of his bedroom and come downstairs while Gus jumped in the shower. He knew there was no point arguing with his parents. Chucking them in the middle of all this wasn't his greatest idea but he knew they'd help and he was prepared to deal with the fallout that would inevitably come.
"Thank you Mrs Ruzek. I'm sorry about all this."
"We aren't loving this Imogen but hopefully you can sort this out with your parents."
Kim told her to sit and wait in the lounge. "Gus is really lucky."
"Yes he is." Kim replied. "Doesn't mean there won't there won't be some fallout for him. We are not happy with him although we do like that he cares about you and what is happening to you. There was just a better way."
Adam opened the door when Imogen's parents rang the bell and welcomed them inside. Gus heard them and rushed down the stairs. He wanted to make sure his Dad didn't lose his shit. Kim offered them all a tea or coffee and they both noticed that they didn't really engage with their daughter and Kim ended up being the facilitator which also pissed Adam off.
"Isn't this all illegal? Like sexual assault or something?" Imogen's Dad, Tom glared at Gus. He knew Gus's parents were cops. "I guess being the son of cops doesn't really matter."
Adam wasn't surprised, this is exactly what Imogen wanted. The easy way out. "Actually the fact that this has nothing to do with Gus is all that matters. He's just trying to help out a friend."
"Help, we don't need his kind of help."
"Pretty sure Imogen does need help right now." Adam muttered under his breath.
"What if it was your daughter?"
He wisely left that one up to Kim. "I'd like to think Polly would've come to us and we would have helped her, we wouldn't be happy that's for sure but our kids were bought up understanding that we'd help them. For any reason, no matter what." Kim made their position very clear and took a clear swipe at them on the way through. "Like Gus came to us with this problem." It was a little white lie, they'd bailed him up. "And here we are.." she shrugged.
Kim now looked at Imogen, who had said very little so far and made it quite clear it was her turn to speak.
"Dad, it's not Gus's fault. He's just been helping me. He's not the father. Gus and I aren't even going out, he's just a friend. It's not his baby."
"It's not mine." Gus blurted out. "I'll take a test."
Adam nodded his head at Gus. "Okay Angus." He stood up. "Let's give Imogen and her parents a chance to talk."
"No."
"Angus." Adam wasn't taking any crap right now. "Let's go. We'll be just in the kitchen." He ushered Gus out and Kim followed them.
"Dad." He wasn't happy.
"Angus, it's okay. They need to sort this out themselves, you can't help right now. We are just in here, if things get outta hand we are right here. Just take a breath. You've done good but it's time for Imogen to own it." Adam rested his hands on his son's shoulders. It wouldn't be much longer and Gus would be taller than him, he already towered over his mother. "I'm proud of you Bud."
"Jack's parents are gonna go apeshit. Jack will be a dick about it." Gus sat up at the bench. "I feel really sorry for Immy. She just wanted Jack to like her."
"He didn't force her did he?"
"No, I don't think so but there was Immy and Cherie and Jack was kinda hanging onto both of them and Cherie was a bit more…." He looked down at the bench and mumbled. "..easy. Immy got jealous because he was doing more stuff with Cherie so she had sex with him thinking it would make him chose her."
"Jesus Gus." Adam gasped.
"Anyway, all it did was make Cherie do it too and so he was getting laid from both of them and didn't care." The only thing Adam and Kim found remotely enjoyable about this was that Gus seemed pretty disgusted by it. At least they seemed to get their kids right.
Suddenly Imogen's Dad appeared. "We are going to go now?" Tom announced. "Thank you."
"Is there anything else we can do?" Kim offered.
"No thank you." He answered shortly and then paused. "Thank you Gus, we do appreciate that you've tried to help Imogen." He turned to Adam and Kim. "You've raised a good son."
"We think so."
It took a while for Gus to extricate himself totally from the Imogen and Jack situation. As they expected it didn't go well with Jack's parents. Whereas Imogen's parents were keen for her to terminate the pregnancy, Jack's parents were violently opposed. It was against their religion. Imogen was already fifteen weeks pregnant so time was running out for a termination.
Eventually they decided she would put the baby up for adoption, another point of contention with Jack and his family. Jack was happy for either termination or adoption, he didn't want to be a father. It was a fraught decision but at the end of the day it was Imogen and her parent's choice and the baby girl was adopted to a couple from Georgia who had been unable to have children.
Gus distanced himself from Jack. He didn't like the lack of concern he showed for Imogen and also that he just moved from one girl to another having not learnt a damn thing. Adam and Kim weren't sorry when Gus declared that Jack wasn't really someone he was interested in hanging out with.
Now Olive was back in town and Adam and Kim's anxiety was through the roof again. The past year was a rollercoaster with Angus, having his 'girlfriend' back was unsettling. Now they were both older and hurtling towards their late teens.
