Hiding the weapon behind his back Jamie unlocked the three locks that them safe and opened up the door. Lena Janko stared at him sure enough wearing a short sleeve white satin shirt dress with little sleeves. "Lena, what are you doing here? You and Armin cut Eddie off remember? You are not opening up old wounds while my wife is pregnant with my babies," Jamie stated quietly with a firm tone as he guarded the door.
"I've made mistakes Jamie. Edit is my only child and I want to apologize in person. If she doesn't forgive me I can understand but I need to try," Lena pleaded.
Giving her a pigeon eye stare Jamie debated whether this would be good for Eddie. It would bring up a lot of old wounds and the doctor didn't want her stressed. "Let me speak to Eddie first. She's on bed rest and the doctor doesn't want her to get stressed," he let her in while going back to the bedroom.
The minute he came in Eddie saw the tightly pinched face he wore when he worried. "Jamie, what's wrong? Who was at the door?"
Before answering the questions he put the piece away and sat on the bed, taking her hand. "I don't know if I'm doing the right thing here Eddie but you do have the right to know. Your mom is out in the hallway waiting. She came to apologize for everything but I wanted to tell you first. Remember what the doctor said. Do you want to want to see her?"
"No." The answer came quick and easy for Eddie. The only reason she's here is because my father isn't. She's not sorry she forced me out and cut all ties when I needed them the most. Now all of a sudden she's sorry? Tell her I don't want to see her at all. I'm happy with my life as it is, with my family."
Giving her a nod of acknowledgement Jamie returned to deliver the news. "She doesn't want to see you Lena. She's happy how her life is and doesn't want to bring up the past. You and Armin cut her off when she needed you the most. "
"I know what we did Jamie and we shouldn't have. We want what's best for Edit and in our eyes you weren't going to be able to provide for our baby. Looking around at your new apartment proved us wrong," Lena rose from her spot on the couch. "Promise me you'll always take care of her and the offer stands when she's ready to call me."
"I will," Jamie led her out with only the slightest bit of remorse. It was a reversed kind of situation. He wanted his father's help but Frank wasn't ready because of the situation they put themselves in. In all things considered Jamie thought they did all right as he locked up. Henry's support helped but they did everything on their own, together.
When he returned to the bedroom Jamie scooped Eddie into his arms quickly. "We're fine without them. We made it this far and in just a few months we'll have our babies. He slid behind her so Eddie lay back on his chest with his arms rubbing all over her growing stomach.
"Yeah we are," Eddie lay her head on his chest, turned on her side and sighed quietly. His touch to her bare skin immediately put her in a relaxed state." I love you Jamie."
"I love you too Eddie."
Going into her sixth month Eddie wasn't prepared for the roller coaster it brought. Their babies grew in the last half putting pressure on her back. She tossed around in Jamie's arms trying not to wake him with his early tour. Lately she'd been more comfortable sleeping in large shirts as her weight doubled.
"Can't sleep," Jamie whispered in the darkness. He sat up, flicking the light on to see and sighed worried. "Come here Eddie. Maybe a massage will help."
She happily lay back into his arms smiling at his strong hands moving up and down her lower back. "I'm sorry Jamie. I wasn't trying to wake you. How are you going to be alert for work in the morning," she sighed quietly.
"I'll be fine Eddie," he kissed along her neck slowly massaging every inch of her back. When he finished Jamie moved around and rubbed over her stomach hoping to relax her. "Close your eyes babe. You need to sleep."
Eddie closed her eyes trying to fall back asleep only slightly more relaxed then just a few minutes ago. In his arms she sprawled over him, head on his chest which seemed to be her new favorite position. Despite the added weight Jamie didn't mind holding her like that. He closed his own eyes and tried falling asleep.
His alarm woke them up just a little after five after tossing and turning most of the night. He showered, had his coffee and came in to get dressed when he found Eddie awake. "You need to sleep babe, it's still early. Get some rest and I'll call you," Jamie kissed her, leaned down and gave two to her stomach smiling.
The apartment fell quiet enough for her to sleep only a little longer. Despite the doctor's orders to stay in bed she shuffled into the kitchen for breakfast. Making some toast which she took back in the bedroom Eddie lay down with her feet up on two pillows to eat. With her view obstructed due to her stomach Eddie saw the swelling in her ankles for the first time.
She turned to look out the window at the rising sun while she ate. Another day of sitting around doing nothing until Jamie came home. Once she finished eating Eddie studied her stomach which expanded over her lap and smiled. Who knew her life would turn into this, a nice apartment, married to a cop and pregnant with his twins at just twenty. She was young but not stupid. This is what she preferred not living with some stuffy country club boy.
And Jamie was handsome too. She noticed that on the beach right away. His eyes were so deep you could get lost in them. He was a cop, helping people every day and though she worried about the danger of his job it was exciting too. He made a difference. Jamie sure made a difference in her life.
Her mind continued with thoughts from the past, the excitement of sneaking off to see Jamie. All the time they spent together on the beach. He grew up in a strict Irish Catholic house but he was still human. Their first time just happened and he was a little shy but became more confident after.
Jamie took good care of her, protected her. It was weird that they didn't know each other well yet fell in love so quickly.
They never talked about having a family because it was very early in the relationship. Then she got pregnant and even with the fear she was excited. Maybe this wouldn't be the only one. Once the twins were older of course.
The thought sat in Eddie's head mixed with feelings about the future. She would have the twins in a few months then finish school but to do what? Jamie already put in days off to help her for the first few weeks at least. The thought of going back to school wasn't appealing anymore. What would she possibly do as an art history major?
She let that stew for a bit while laying around in bed thinking. Around noon Eddie got up to make herself a sandwich. Just as she spread mayo over the top bun the door jingled like someone was coming in. Holding the knife up in plain view she reached for her cell and held a breath.
The door closed lightly, followed by footsteps going towards the bedroom. "Eddie?"
Setting the knife down sighing Eddie slowly started into the bedroom too. "Jamie? I was making a sandwich in the kitchen. Why are you home so early? Didn't you have a couple of more hours left?" Just Inside the doorway he turned around and gave one look that made her heart drop. "What happened?"
His blue eyes searched her for a full minute but they were different, lost. "Jamie? What happened," Eddie cupped his hand to take him over to the bed. Once they both sat she put an arm around his shoulders.
"We were working and this guy he pointed a gun at some kids so I had no choice. I fired once and shot him in the chest," Jamie slowly explained. He turned his head finally looking at her. "It was the first time I discharged my weapon, let alone to kill someone. I didn't want to Eddie but I didn't know if he would really shoot."
His shoulders slumped in a way Eddie never saw before, like he held the weight of the world on them. "You protected those kids Jamie, maybe even saved their lives," Eddie pulled him into a tight hug. "Oh Jamie I'm sorry lamb chop."
Jamie rested his head on her shoulder, "I have to get clearance from the department shrink. They made me get checked out at the hospital for trauma but I'm fine. I mean I'm alive but.."
"You shot because you thought he was going to shoot. You saved lives today. I'm just worried about you know," Eddie rubbed the palm on her hand over his back. "In my eyes you're a hero Jamie and I'm sure the parents of those kids agree. "
This was the first taste of cop life Eddie had been exposed to. Some creep almost shoots into a crowded park and this what the officer is left with. Doubt, sadness and uncertainty. She held him in her arms for as long as he needed comfort.
"Sarg gave me time off to clear my head, then I have to see a shrink. Meanwhile I'm on desk duty when I go back in a few days. He wants to make sure I'm focused when I come back, it's protocol," Jamie let out a quiet sigh.
"Well that's a good thing. I know you want to be out there but maybe a few days will help. And I don't know much about police work but you can talk to me too. I love you Jamie," Eddie gently brushed her fingers over his cheek as he looked up into her eyes.
He smiled, no longer showing a look of loss but still doubtful. "I know, thank you Eddie. I love you too."
The topic dropped after that but Eddie kept a close eye on Jamie for the rest of the afternoon. That night as she sat up wide awake again Eddie felt Jamie tossing around in his sleep, mumbling under his breath. She tried to hear what he was saying but couldn't. The pinched expression on his face told her he was having some kind of nightmare.
"Jamie. Wake up lamb chop you're having a bad dream," Eddie lay her hand on his shoulder gently so not to startle him awake.
One more toss and Jamie's eyes flew open as he sat up, breathing hard. He turned his head left to right scanning the room. "Eddie? Sorry, I just saw him looking at me and smiling as he pointed his weapon at me."
"It's okay, you're safe Jamie. Come here and lay with me," Eddie guided him down in her arms then took his hand. His entire body shook as he settled with his wife. "Would you feel better talking about it?"
"No," Jamie shook his head then added, "Maybe. We were in the park like today and it was crowded. He was only a few feet in front of me and he looked up right at me and just smiled as he lifted his weapon directly at me. "
Eddie listened quietly while he relived the nightmare that forced him awake. "The whole time he just smiled. "
"That sounds really scary Jamie. Look at me lamb chop. You're home safe okay? It's okay," Eddie held him a little tighter, lowered her head to kiss the top of his. As best she could with her belly Eddie maneuvered herself to spoon Jamie so he'd feel safe. "I love you Jamie. "
He sighed quietly with his head laid back near her chest. The warmth of Eddie's breath in his ear and her arms folded around him comforted him a little. He was home safe but was the perp going to be inside his head every time he closed his eyes. No one could protect him from the nightmare of having to relive the incident over and over. Not even Eddie.
They lay quiet neither ae to fall asleep until very late that night. Even when they did manage Jamie continued having nightmares and Eddie couldn't get comfortable. Around three thirty they gave up trying to sleep and just sat up together.
The inability to sleep continued for several days making Eddie hope that the shrink would be able to help Jamie through it better then she obviously was. He would talk to her after each nightmare but still had them. It pained her seeing him so shaken up but all she could do was show support as he struggled through his first incident.
It made Eddie wonder too what might happen next time this happens, or something worse. Jamie internalizes everything to heart. There had to be a way for her to help him through it when things like that.
Besides Jamie there was only one other cop she knew well enough to call for some answers. Eddie dialed Pop's number and invited him up for a chat.
