Ch.37
Halfway to the RV, I stop in my tracks causing Daryl to look at me in wonder. "What is it?" he asks confused. "I can't face her, Daryl. I just can't. I got her daughter killed." I sob backing away from him.
"Then just stay outside the RV. You don't have to confront her with me if you're scared. You both need to listen to what I have to say, though." Daryl pleads with me grabbing my wrist. "Come on." he urges me forward.
I stand back away from the RV while Daryl talks to Carol. I do what he asks and listen to what he has to say. He is right, though. Sophia's in a better place now. No more monsters or feeling scared.
I notice Lori walking towards me. "Hey. You doin' okay?" she asks me before grabbing Carol's attention. "They're ready. We're gonna have a funeral for our loved ones - for Sophia. Come on." Lori urges all of us to the burial ground.
First, Carol didn't want to go. She said that wasn't her little girl, so there's no point in going. I peek at her seeing her with no emotion. She can't just refuse like that, though.
I step up in front of Carol to try and convince her otherwise. "I know you don't want to hear it from me, but...I'm truly sorry. I grieve with you - we all do. I didn't do my best to keep her safe, but you must give her a proper funeral. She deserves that and so do you." I insert causing Daryl to smile at me for my courage to confront her.
When Carol doesn't show any signs of moving, Daryl leads me out to the funeral service. After the service, everybody goes there own way. "Meet you back at the tent." I say grasping Daryl's hand before he goes off into the woods.
At some point Beth went into shock. "How is she?" I ask stepping into the bedroom next to Lori. "Her heart's racing and she's burning up." Andrea says walking over to us. "We need Hershel. He'll know what to do." Lori says staring at the girl.
"Will you look after Carl?" Lori turns to face me. "Sure. Yeah." I say following her with my eyes. "Uh. Where are you going?" I stop her before she could get too far. "To go talk to Daryl. Ask him to bring Hershel and Rick back." she says walking around me. "Unless you will go talk to him." she looks skeptical at me.
I sigh before answering Lori. "I will go with you in case things get bad. I'm not even sure if I can convince him myself, but I will help." I speak up. "Thank you." she thanks me asking Andrea to look after Carl instead.
"I thought we were meeting back at the tent." Daryl narrows his eyes at me. "Change of plans." I say gesturing for Lori to ask what she wants. "What's she doing here?" he questions me.
"What do you want?" Daryl scrunches his face up at Lori. I listen to them argue about having him run as a lackey for us. I cringe at his insults at Lori. Then she looks over angrily at me. "Mae, a little help?" she calls to me.
Seeing me fail to convice Daryl to gather the men in question, Lori decides to drive to the bar herself. "I'm going with you." I say opening the passenger side door. She nods at me to get in.
We're heading down the road in search of Rick, Hershel, and Glenn when Lori hands me the map. "Which way do we go?" she asks me driving frantically. "Um. I'm not sure. I never was able to figure out these maps." I study the map every which way.
"What? Here, give it to me." Lori grabs the map out of my hands. "Look, I think we're going this way." I follow a trail on the map. "Yeah. I think so, too. If we just follow this way..." she trails off studying the map more.
When I look forward, my eyes go wide at the walker in the middle of the road in front of us. "Lori, look out!" I scream getting her attention. We both scream as the car flies through the air followed by a crash.
When I finally come to, the same walker that we hit before is chomping its teeth at me. I scream as loud as I can at the walker squeezing its face through the broken windshield to get to me.
Lori is out Cold. "Lori? Lori! Wake up!" I call out to the woman beside me. My head and wrist hurts like hell. Blood is streaming down my forehead. Lori finally wakes up screaming at the walker trying hard to get to us. Parts of its flesh is scraping off as it pushes its way through.
I reach for my knife on the floorboard, but I can't grab it without possibly getting bit on my way back up. I'm gonna end up walker lunch if I don't get out of the car soon.
"Lori, I can't reach my knife." I tell her as she looks for a weapon. The walker is halfway through the hole when Lori hands me a screwdriver as a weapon. I guess that works.
"Mister, you're about to get screwed." I say then mentally facepalm myself for the stupid pun. I scream plunging the sharp end into its eye. It stops moving instantly and I let out a sigh of relief.
"Come on. We have to get out of here now." Lori says crawling out the window of the car. I nod at her before grabbing my knife on the way out. "Are you okay?" I ask wiping off my pants and she nods.
A walker creeps up on us from behind as soon as I look up. Lori knocks it into me and I tumble with the creature. I let out a scream as I feel a stabbing pain in my back. Struggling with the walker, I shove my knife into the side of its head. Blood squirts all over me as I pull the knife out.
Lori helps me up, then checks my injury on my back. Apparently I fell on a piece of metal off the car when the walker knocked me down. I scream in pain as she pulls the metal from my back and takes off her overshirt to use as a bandage.
I tell Lori she can just rip the bottom of my shirt to tie around it, but she already got her shirt bloody. "You good?" she asks me worried and I nod. "Come on. Let's get going. We have to get back." I say groaning in pain.
Lori looks at me as if I've given up on Rick and Hershel. "We can't do that. We have to find Rick. That's why we're out here." she tears up. "I trust them. But if you're still planning on finding them, after what just happened, then I will stay with you." I say giving up on convincing her to go back to the farm. "Thank you." she says grabbing my waist to steady me.
