Daisy overhears May and Coulson talking about her in season 5, after Coulson brings her back from space. I hope you are all doing alright! Thank you for reading and for your comments/requests! :)
They had been back in their own time period for a few days now, so Daisy decided she should explore the Lighthouse a little more. The dark, gloomy halls looked exactly the same as they did in the future, except without the creepy blue aliens everywhere. She turned a corner and heard hushed voices ahead. Normally, this would be a normal occurrence that she'd just ignore, but she recognized the voices to be May and Coulson. She hid around the corner after hearing her name mentioned.
"Phil, she's been through a lot the past few months. We've been going non stop for years, of course she's not going to be acting quite like herself."
"It's not just that, Mel. She's terrified she's going to blow the world to pieces. She's so scared that she almost didn't come back with us! We could have lost her."
"Did you have to ice her though?"
"What did you expect me to do? Carry her out kicking and screaming? She's so stubborn, we didn't have the time to argue about it."
"Well you could have at least given me some warning." Daisy couldn't help but agree with May there. She heard Coulson sigh and could picture him running a hand down his face.
"I don't know how to help her, Mel." Daisy assumed May had just given him a look because the man continued, "She's not the one who quakes the world apart. That's not our Daisy."
"You know that, I know that, but she's convinced that she did it...or will do it. Which is the only reason she's happy she has the inhibitor." May huffed.
"Are you not worried she's losing a part of herself? Her powers are a part of her! Plus, she's becoming more and more distant."
"Of course I'm worried, Phil! She's reverting back to how she was after Hive! You know what she means to me."
"You're right, I'm sorry." Daisy held her breath as they sat in silence, she could hear Coulson's footsteps echo through the empty hall as he paced.
"I couldn't leave her there. She's...she's the daughter I never had." At his words, Daisy let the tears she had been holding in fall.
"I know." May whispered. There was another silent pause once again.
"Those days on the bus seem so long ago now. She was so young." Coulson reminisced.
"Practically a kid." May agreed.
"She reminds me so much of you." Coulson commented and Daisy could picture the grin on his face, "Her strength, determination, ability to take risks."
"Me?" May huffed a laugh at this, "Her ability to see the good in people and inspire them is all you, Phil. And her sass."
'What? No, the sass is definitely from you." May must've given him another look because he just laughed then relented, "Fine, fine. She gets her sass from both of us. She's the perfect combination of the two of us don't you think?"
"Definitely."
Daisy smiled and her tears changed from sad to happy. She couldn't believe how much they loved her. She was honored that they saw parts of themselves in her.
"We need to remind her how much she's wanted here and how much we love her, powers and all. And that no matter what happens, I'll never regret bringing her back home. She's a part of this...crazy, dysfunctional family and we are not going to let her face this alone." Coulson said determinedly. May hummed in agreement.
"Well then, it's a good thing she heard every word we just said. Daisy?" May called.
Daisy froze for a second before stepping out of her hiding spot. She didn't even bother to hide the fact that she was crying as she approached them. They had both seen her cry a number of times, so it was no longer embarrassing.
"You guys are right," She sniffled, "I shouldn't be distancing myself from you guys. I… I'm just so scared and haven't had time to process… well everything really."
"We've all been through a lot Daisy. You can't keep it all bottled up."
"May's right. It's okay to not be okay." Daisy nodded and let herself be vulnerable and walked into Coulson's outstretched arms.
Coulson hugged her as the younger agent sobbed into his shoulder, finally letting out the emotions she had been trying to ignore and May rubbed soothing circles on her back. She cried for what happened after Hive and the Framework, she cried over the stress and loneliness in space, and she cried for the present and the fear of what was to come. She wasn't sure how long she had sobbed in Coulson's arms for, but eventually she pulled away. Coulson wiped a stray tear from her cheek with his thumb and Daisy smiled at the fatherly gesture. She wondered if what they said about her being like them was true.
"We meant everything we said, you know." May said and Daisy wondered for the millionth time if May could actually read her mind.
"We care about you Daisy. So damn much. We'll figure this thing out. You have both of our best traits after all." Coulson jokes.
"Which means double the sass." May smirked and poked Daisy in the side, causing Daisy to let out a giggle.
"What? I am never sassy! I'm practically an angel." Daisy said and put on her best puppy dog eyes.
"Well, at least we know one thing's for sure; she gets her terrible jokes from you Phil."
"Come on, my jokes are way better than his!" Daisy argued with a smile on her face.
"Sure. Whatever you say, angel eyes." Coulson laughed and placed a kiss on the top of her head. Daisy's stomach growled, causing Coulson to chuckle again. "I think Mack should be done with dinner by now, how about we go eat?"
May agreed while Daisy nodded animatedly. He linked arms with his girls and the three of them made their way back to the control center. Each of them wore a smile on their face and felt a little bit better about what was to come.
