Chapter 33: A Changed Drew
"So, what happened during the date yesterday?" Dawn asked.
May took her head out of her locker and faced Dawn.
May frowned. "Nothing. Because he didn't show up again."
"What?!"
"And what's more is that...I saw him last night, but...with a girl that I don't even know." May said.
"He's cheating on you?" Dawn questioned, eyes wide.
May nodded sadly.
Dawn cracked her knuckles. "Just you watch...I'll show him that he shouldn't mess around with love."
May lowered Dawn's hands with hers. "Maybe you shouldn't do that. I just plan on giving him the silent treatment, so then he'll be coming to me to try and apologize."
"Good plan." Dawn said. "But, my punishment for him is Plan B, okay?"
"Uhh...maybe it should be Plan K."
"Aww man…" Dawn said. "Well, I hope your plan works." With that said, Dawn walked away from May.
May turned back to organize her locker.
"Hey May."
May knew that Drew was now standing on the other side of the locker door, but she chose to ignore him. She continued putting things from her locker into her backpack.
"Umm...hello?" Drew said as he walked around her to be on the other side of her now.
May didn't say anything and she didn't face him.
"May?" Drew questioned.
May put her backpack back on her and she closed her locker. Without looking at Drew, she walked past him.
"Hey, where are you going?" Drew asked as he caught up to her and started walking next to her now.
May still didn't say anything. ("Drew, just leave me alone.") She thought.
"May." Drew repeated. He walked ahead of her and stopped right in front of her. "Why aren't you talking to me?"
May walked around Drew without saying anything. She continued walking down the hall. Drew followed her.
"Hey May." Misty said once she noticed May and Drew. May saw Misty and went to talk to her.
"Hi Misty." May greeted.
Misty looked at Drew who mouthed the words, "She's not talking to me". Misty looked back at May.
"So May, umm...why aren't you talking to Drew?" Misty asked.
"I know many Drews. Which one are you talking about?" May asked.
("She does?") Drew thought.
"Uhh...that one." Misty said as she pointed behind May at Drew.
May looked at Drew up and down and then she turned back to Misty. "Sorry, but I have no idea who that person is."
Misty and Drew's mouths hung open. "What?" Misty asked. "May, he's your boyfriend."
"Boyfriend?" May questioned, cocking her head to the side. "I don't ever remember having one of those." With that said, she walked away, leaving a confused Drew and Misty.
"Okay." Misty said. She faced Drew. "What did you do to her?"
"What? I didn't do anything to her." Drew said. "I don't know why she's ignoring me."
"Hmm…well you better go apologize to her or something, because it sounded like that was...a breakup." Misty said.
"A breakup?" Drew questioned. "Oh. Right, right. I'll go apologize to her for...something I don't know I did." Drew corrected his mistake. He left after May.
May sat on the opposite side of the table from Drew. It's lunchtime now and May has been ignoring Drew for the entire morning.
The gang all looks at May and then at Drew. Back to May and then back to Drew.
"Okay. This is crazy. What's gotten into you two?" Gary asked.
May and Drew didn't respond. May wasn't even looking at him, but Drew kept looking at her. Dawn didn't bother saying anything either.
"Okay then…" Ash said.
"Guys, I don't know why May has been ignoring me." Drew said. He finally spoke because he figured that May wouldn't. And she didn't.
"What'd you do to her?" Gary asked.
"I did nothing!" Drew answered quickly.
Anger built up inside of May.
"You clearly did something wrong." Misty said. "I don't think I've ever seen May like this."
"Like what?" Drew questioned stupidly.
May got even more angry.
"Uhh...mad?" Gary answered Drew.
"Oh...right." Drew said. "May, please tell me what's wrong." Drew pleaded.
There was no response from May.
"I warned you, Mister." Kiara said angrily. "I said that if you break her heart, you'll be in big trouble."
"But I didn't break her heart." Drew said. He looked at May. "If I did something wrong, I want to apologize for it and make it up to you-"
"Okay! That's enough!" May yelled, slamming her hands on the table and standing up, cutting Drew off.
Everyone in the cafeteria heard the yell and now they all looked at May.
"May...what's wrong?" Drew asked. May is currently staring at Drew with anger in her eyes.
May took her hands off of the table, she grabbed her backpack, and she ran out of the cafeteria, angry and sad at the same time.
"May!" Drew called as May ran.
"You should hurry and follow her." Dawn said.
"Right." Drew said. He got up, grabbed his backpack, and ran out after May.
May opened the choir room door and rushed inside. She sat on the risers, catching her breath from running so fast. Her hands clenched.
"Drew doesn't even know why I'm mad at him." May said angrily to herself. "He didn't even know that I'm mad!"
The choir room door opened. "I knew you'd be here." Drew said as he walked inside.
May got off the risers. "What are you doing here?" She asked angrily.
"I came to see what's wrong." Drew answered, walking closer to May.
"See, that's the thing!" May yelled. Drew stopped in his tracks. "You always know why I'm upset! You always know why I'm sad!" Tears started coming out of her eyes. "You never have to ask me what's wrong, because you always already know!"
Drew didn't say anything. He just listened to May to try and understand what she's trying to say.
"You've somehow changed, Drew!" May continued yelling. "In the past few days! And I don't like it." She added in a normal voice sadly.
Drew took a step closer to May. "How have I changed?"
"By asking that!" May cried. "You always know what I'm thinking when I'm mad or sad, and you never have to ask questions like that."
Drew took another step closer. "I'm sorry May. I promise I'll-"
"That's another thing Drew!" May yelled. "You always kept your promises! Whenever you promised me a date, you were there! Whenever you promised me a good time, it always happened!" May cried some more. "And now two days ago, you've become like...a different person! I don't even know you anymore!"
Drew continued slowly walking towards May.
"You completely blew me off the past two days!" May cried. "You promised you wouldn't be late for our magic carpet ride. And you don't even show up! I waited for you on my balcony for an hour! And then the next day, you promised again! And you never showed!"
Drew was getting closer to May that she now started walking backwards, so he can't touch her.
"And what's more," May continued. "I see you kiss some girl I don't know on your own magic carpet ride! You blew me off to fly with someone else in the diamond sky! That's supposed to be our thing Drew! Ours." She said the last part quietly. Her voice is sore from all the yelling.
From walking backwards, she bumps into the back wall. Drew stops in front of her and puts his hand on the wall next to her head. May stares into Drew's eyes and blushes at how close Drew is to her. There's nowhere she can run to if she wants to.
"Why does it matter to you if I kissed someone else?" Drew asked.
"Why does it…?" May said quietly to herself. Her anger returned and she pushed Drew back. "What do you mean why does it matter to me?!" She yelled. "A girl feels heartbroken when her boyfriend kisses someone else! Have you lost your mind?!"
Drew looked at her confused. "But...we're friends May. Always have been since you were Daisy."
May stared at him, mouth slightly open.
"I don't recall us ever dating. I mean, that's crazy talk, right?" Drew said.
"What?" May asked incredulously.
"I've always only liked you as a friend, May." Drew said. "My girlfriend is Gabriella."
May's heart dropped in her chest. "What?" She asked again softly.
The choir room door opened. The gang all walked in.
"There you guys are." Gary said.
They all froze when they noticed May's expression. Her eyes are watery and her mouth is slightly open in shock.
"Guys, what's going on?" Gary asked.
"Drew...said that…" May said.
"May, why did you think that we're-"
"Because!" May yelled, cutting Drew off. She lifted her hands up behind her neck, touching the necklace that she never took off since Drew gave it to her on Christmas. She unclipped it and she threw the necklace at Drew's chest. He quickly caught it before it hit the ground.
"You promised me!" May yelled at Drew, crying. "You said you'd never break my heart!" She paused before continuing. "You can keep that necklace! I don't want it!" With that yelled, she ran past Drew and the gang. She ran out of the choir room."
"Drew, what happened?" Dawn asked.
"I...wish I knew." Drew answered. He looked at the necklace in his hands. ("The letter 'D'...")
"Hello there."
May stopped running and she stopped in front of the very person who is apparently Drew's "girlfriend".
"Hi, is everything okay? Don't you know you shouldn't run in the halls...Princess?" Gabriella asked.
"I'm fine. Just...an argument with someone." May said.
"What was the argument about?" Gabriella asked.
"It's none of your business what the argument was about." May said, eyebrows furrowed.
"Wow, I never thought I'd see the day when the Princess of Hoenn would yell or be upset with anyone." Gabriella said, smirking.
"What are you planning?" May asked, eyebrows furrowed.
"What do you mean?" Gabriella asked innocently.
"What did you do to Drew?"
"I don't know what you're talking about. He's completely fallen in love with me." Gabriella said. She walked closer to May.
Gabriella stopped next to her, facing the other way. "Drew's mine and there's nothing you can do about it." She whispered. With that said, she walked away, leaving an upset May in the hallway.
"May." Drew's voice called from behind her.
May turned around and faced Drew.
"Are you okay?" Drew asked.
"...no." May answered. "And the fact that you're in love with that girl is not helping." She said as she started walking past Drew.
Drew watched her walk away. He soon followed after her.
"May, I'm sorry. I didn't know you liked me in that way." Drew said.
They both stopped walking and May faced Drew. "Let me ask you this, do you remember last school year when you sang at the end of the year talent show?"
"Last year…" Drew started thinking. "Yeah. I remember."
"Do you remember the name of the song you sang?"
"Umm...I sang Beautiful Soul by Jesse McCartney." Drew answered.
"Right. Do you remember singing it to anyone in particular?" May asked.
"Hmm...nope. I was just singing it to the audience."
"Okay." May sighed.
"Did I say something wrong?"
"No. No. You didn't." May said.
Riiiiinnnnnnggggggg!
"Umm...let's just...get to class." May said sadly.
