Ch.38
"Lori, are you sure you're okay? What about the baby?" I ask her again while walking down the road. When she doesn't answer me, my mind turns back to the pills from earlier.
"You do still have the baby, don't you?" I ask prodding Lori for an answer. I hope she didn't do what she had planned on doing. "Yes. For now." she answers back. "For now? What do you mean 'for now'? Are you still planning on getting rid of it?" I shriek at her.
"Well...I'm not sure yet. I can't raise a baby in this world. I don't know what to do." Lori cries softly. "Listen. I think you actually want to keep this baby. Yeah, this isn't the perfect world to raise kids in, but..." I gesture throwing a hand in the air.
"Rick would want you to keep it. At least give it a chance. I can be aunty Mae. Think of it." I plead with a smile. Lori lets out a laugh at the last statement. She's really troubled by this. "I still don't know." she says and I huff at her for being so indecisive.
We're still walking down the road when a car slows down behind us. I turn around to see Shane exiting the car. "Are you guys all right? I saw the accident." he asks mainly looking at Lori.
"I'm fine, but Maezy's hurt." Lori replies to Shane. He looks me over while walking up to us.. "I'll be fine." I say holding my wrist. "No, you're not fine! I saw the wreck." Shane grumbles checking Lori to make sure she's fine. He doesn't care that I got hurt, but at least he acted like it for Lori.
"What happened?" Shane asks angrily looking towards me. Anger rises within me at his glare. I bet he thinks I did it. "Listen. I wasn't the one who did it. So don't blame me." I spit my words like poison at him.
"But you came here with her! You should have stopped her! Do you know how wreckless this was?!" Shane shouts at me ready to put up a fight. "I know, but it wasn't my fault! She told me her plans and I wanted to make sure she was safe! She wouldn't back down!" I yell back at him loudly.
Oh, do I want to punch Shane square in the face right now. "Why don't you do us all a favor and leave this group. She only gets these ideas from you." he says poking me in the chest.
I look at Shane in pure anger and shock. Okay, now I really want to rip his head off. "You evil son of a..." I start but never finish my sentence. "How dare you. She does no such thing." Lori barks at him ready to smack him in the face.
"We don't have time for this. We need to find Rick and Hershel." Lori says continuing down the road. I glare at Shane before following her. "Rick's back. They're all safe and sound." Shane says shaking his head at Lori's persistence.
"Really?" Lori asks stunned. "Yeah." Shane reassures her. I don't believe him one bit, but I do want to go back. "How do we know for sure?" I spit glaring at him again. "Just get in the damn car or I will leave you out here." he growls motioning to the car. I really don't want to ride with him, but it's a long way back.
"Oh my God, are you all right? What happened?" Andrea stares between me and Lori. "We were in an accident. I'm fine, but Mae's hurt." Lori states stepping behind me to check my injury. I groan in pain as she lifts up the bandage.
"They were attacked." Shane interjects. "So where's Rick and them?" I ask in a snobby way? "I need to see Hershel." I finish in my regular voice. Everyone goes silent, and we look at each other stunned.
"They're not back? Where are they?" Lori looks dumbfounded. I glare at Shane again. I knew he was lying. That bastard. To think he could play us that way. He should be ashamed.
"Look, I had to get you back here." Shane explains to Lori's scolding eyes. "You asshole! How could you lie to us like that!" Lori screams at him with anger in her eyes.
The three of us continue fighting, then Shane shouts about keeping the baby safe. My mind goes blank listening to him talk about the baby. I didn't know he kew about the baby also. God I hope it's not his baby.
Carl walks out from behind Shane stunned that his mom is pregnant. "You're having a baby? Why didn't you tell me?" he asks her disappointed. Lori doesn't know what to say to him. I don't think she had planned on telling him unless she knew for sure she was keeping the baby.
"Come on. Let's make sure you're all right." Dale leads Lori to the house. "You too, missy." he says gesturing for me to come, too. We start to walk towards the house when Daryl storms up to us.
"Has anyone seen Mae?" Daryl asks frantically to the others. I turn around to look a him. "Maezy? What happened to you? Where did you go?" he runs up to me staring at my body. He grabs ahold of my injured hand and I hiss pulling it back.
Daryl looks at me confused at my reaction. "They were in a car wreck. Then got attacked." Andrea fills him in on the occurents. "What?" he looks at me worried. Then his gaze falls to the bloodied shirt wrapped around my waist.
"Come on. We need to check your back." Dale urges me up the steps. "Back? What happened to your back? And what's with the bandage?" Daryl asks pointing to my waist.
"I fell on a piece of metal when a walker knocked me down. It'll probably need stitches so..." I tell Daryl what happened back on the road. "Then go." he demands pulling me into the house.
Otis's wife stitched me up the best she could. It still feels like I've been stabbed. "Ain't that a coincidence that we both needed stitches within the same week." I try to lighten the mood causing a chuckle to come out of Daryl's mouth. "Yeah. Ain't that a bitch." he says making us both laugh.
The next day, Hershel, Rick, and Glenn show up just as some of the others were about to go looking for them. "Well it's about damn time. What took you guys so long?" I say looking at Glenn.
"Who the hell is that?" T-dog notices a new guy in the backseat of the truck. We stare in shock as the newcomer is pulled out of the seat. The boy's name is Randall. Rick said he got hurt so they decided to bring him with them to treat.
I can't believe they brought someone else back with them. But who am I to talk. Daryl brought me back to camp and I became a part of the group. So I can't judge him. He's only a boy.
We gather around the dining table to discuss about what to do with the boy. Daryl walks in late and heads straight for me. "Hey Dar." I call up to him when he stops behind me. "How ya feeling?" he asks grasping my shoulders. "Still hurts but I'll survive. See?" I gesture to me up and moving.
Shane gets up saying some sarcastic comment to Hershel. He had to stir up Hershel's anger again about the barn situation, didn't he? I don't know how we put up with him.
I listen to Hershel tell Shane off. I can't believe what I just heard. It was great. I can't help but laugh on the inside. I don't even try to hide my smile creasing my lips. "Go Hershel." I shout in my head.
