A Family Life

Chapter 29

(In Virgil's point a view)

The next morning Mum made us breakfast before we left for the day, Rebeca's appointment wasn't until the afternoon so we took our girls out for the morning. We did a bit of shopping and loaded it all back into the car. Just before we were due to arrive at the hospital Alan gives us a call to update us on our boys.

"Alan Tracy calling Virgil Tracy come in."

"Hey Alan how are both Joshua and Scotty doing now?"

"Both seem fine now and I think that you were right. Joshua definitely has a tooth cutting through and Scotty had that colic thing. Both boys are happy and settled now." Said Alan

"How did they sleep Alan?"

"Really well Jo, we were up a couple of times last night for feedings but went back over again. If you don't mind me saying your boys are taking after you with their sleep."

"Hey not now I don't I have to help with looking after my own children now Alan and I wouldn't change it for the world." As we were talking to Alan, we hear Robyn shout from the back seat.

"Mummy, Daddy I think Rebecca bite my finger." After Robyn had told us that Jo made way round to the back seat of the car to check our baby daughter out.

"It's okay Robyn, Rebecca has just cut her first tooth and that means you have to get her something special because you found it."

"Really what like?"

"Why don't we chat about it on the way to the hospital? "Asked Jo with a smile

"Alan just out of interest who felt for Joshua's first tooth?"

"Think it was Dad why?"

"Well, whoever finds the first tooth has to buy Joshua his first pair of shoes."

"Really?"

"Yep, anyway I am going to let you go now give our boys kisses and hugs from us both,"

"Okay Virgil and good luck with Rebecca today. We will see you all soon Alan Tracy out."

So, we made our to the hospital for Rebeca's appointment, when we arrived Dr Manning met us so that she could take us where we needed to go.

"Hey there Mr and Mrs Tracy, its lovely to see you again. And who is this beautiful girl here?"

"My name is Robyn and I came to help my little sister Rebecca." Said Robyn while Taking Dr Manning's hand to shake it."

"Well why don't we get you all to the right person to fix Rebecca up? How are your other two babies doing?"

"They are doing good both Rebecca and Joshua have cut a tooth each and Scotty is doing so well after his operation." Said Jo as we walked into the Doctors office.

"Hello my name is Dr Wyatt and I will be helping you with Rebecca today. Can you tell me what is going on?"

"We believe that Rebecca might be deaf, she doesn't seem to cry a lot and we have to wake her for her feeds half the time. It's odd because she doesn't cry when our two boys cry."

"Okay why don't I take a look at her with Dr Manning here to see if she needs hearing aids? If she needs them then she will need to stay in for 24 hours so that we can put the implants in."

"You mean surgery?" Asked Jo while holding Rebecca

"Yes, it will be done under a general anaesthesia and will take a couple of hours to do. I have a space for her first thing in the morning, the only problem is that you would need to come back here in a couple of weeks to for Rebecca to get fitted with the hearing aids. Is this something that you both want to do?"

"Can you give us a few minutes to talk about this?" I asked while looking over at my wife.

"That's no problem Mr Tracy, Robyn why don't you come with me so we can check Rebecca out while your parents talk to the Doctor?" said Dr Manning who took our girls out of the room so that we could chat to the Doctor about what would be happening now.

"So, if you don't mind us asking what will this operation involve?"

"I would make an incision cut then place the implant under the skin and skull, I would thread the wires with electrodes into a spiral of the Cochlear to secure the implants and close up the incision with stitches." Explained the Doctor

"Can it be risky?"

"There is always a risky but Rebecca is young and at the right age now for this operation. I will go and see how Dr Manning is getting on with Robyn and Rebecca so you two can talk." Said the Doctor who left to let us talk this through.

"Virgil I am really unsure about this, what if she isn't strong enough and we lose her?"

"We won't lose her Jo; she is strong and with these hearing aids Rebecca will have a better life. She will be able to react and cry to tell us what she wants. If I am honest, I think the other two are crying for her. It will be worth it in the end."

"So, if we decide on the operation, what about Scotty and Joshua? We can't stay here for another couple of weeks without seeing them."

"Then we can always get Alan and Tin-Tin to fly them over us, okay there may be a small delay with getting our baby girl sorted. We are here now why don't we call Dad to give him a quick update on what is happening?"

"Yeah, I think that would be a good idea."

"Virgil Tracy calling Jeff Tracy come in Dad."

"Hey son how is everything going over there?"

"We just got news that Rebecca will need to have an operation to fit implants into her ears, once that is done then we have to wait two weeks before we can bring her back to get her fitted for her aids. I am sorry Dad I thought that we were only going to be 48 hours but it is going to taking a little longer here."

"It's fine son takes all the time you need; I can always send Alan and Tin-Tin over with Joshua and Scotty if you want?"

"Please Dad that was why we were calling Jo is really worried about being away from them to long."

"I don't blame her son she is a lovely Mother and you are very blessed to have her."

"Thanks Dad I better go here the doctors are coming back in"

"Okay son keep us updated and I will send Alan and Tin-Tin over with your boys. Take care Jeff Tracy out."

Once I came off with Dad, Dr Manning and Dr Watts walked back in with our girls, we knew once they walked in that Rebecca would need the operation.

"Well, it looks like you were right about Rebecca needing help with her hearing. So, do you both want to go ahead with the operation? I can book her in for tomorrow morning."

"Yes, please get her booked in for the morning, we have chatted to family and we want to give this a chance." I said while putting my arm around my wife's shoulder.

"Okay we will see you both in the morning," said Dr Manning who shook both our hands. So, it was decided that Jo would stay here with Rebecca while I took Robyn back to Mums for the night. When we arrived, I seen that the road heading to Mum's was closed off and we could see smoke in the distance.
