It had been a week since Hermione had found out that she was pregnant, time seemed to move so much faster now that she knew, the only downfall was that she had yet to tell Charlie. She hadn't meant to put it off for a week, she had just wanted to make it as special for him as possible, this was their first child after all and she wanted to make sure they both basked in the excitement for as long as they could. After going back and forth between various ideas on how to break the news to him, she had finally decided. Hermione knew a lot of expecting parents were now having surprise parties to announce it to their family or making a very big spectacle out if, that was something she absolutely did not want. So, Hermione decided to keep it private. A private moment that they could share together and store in their memories for their lifetime.
That's how Hermione found herself in the kitchen at the crack of dawn, making sure she had Charlie's favourite breakfast out for him for once he woke up. She had just finished plating his food and pouring the coffee as he finally made his way into the kitchen.
Charlie sniffed the air and smiled as the familiar scent of bacon hit his nose, "Smells good Mione" He stood behind her and wrapped his arms around her gently
Hermione smiled at the feeling of his body connecting with hers, as she felt his arms drifting slightly lower to her belly, she wriggled her way free much to the confusion of her husband. She just smiled and waved him off. "If you kept going any lower I'd get distracted and more than likely one of us would end up with hot coffee all over us"
Charlie laughed but agreed with her, distractions in the kitchen were never a good idea. He took his usual place at the table, only now noticing that it had been set slightly differently. Usually the table would be bare, but there was now a simple white table cloth draped over the table. There was a beautiful bunch of flowers in a vase in the middle and Hermione had laid out their best china that they had received as a wedding gift. Charlie raised an eyebrow, "What's all this?"
"What's all what?" Hermione questioned, trying her best to sound nonchalant, she knew Charlie was an observant man and whenever she was excited or nervous about something he could tell almost instantly, but she didn't want to give the surprise away too early.
"The table cloth, the flowers and using our good china?"
Hermione shrugged as she placed his food and coffee on front of him, "I just thought the table could use a bit of a spruce up, the flowers were in bloom and I thought it would make a lovely addition to the kitchen. And well, we haven't used the china since we were gifted them so I thought why not try them out?"
Charlie chuckled, ready to response but his Weasley appetite took over when he saw the plate of food before him, his eyes lit up like a child's at Christmas as he dug into his food, although he managed to keep it a lot more civilised compared to Ron. Ron had always had poor table manners. Hermione leaned back in her chair and watched Charlie with a smile on her face, little did he know he was just about to get the surprise of his life.
After the food was ate and the dishes done, Hermione grabbed the small gift bag she had stored in her library. Her nerves suddenly sky rocketing and she felt the nausea creeping up, she knew she didn't have anything to be nervous about. Charlie was going to be ecstatic about the news, but there was just something so nerve wrecking about telling your partner that you're pregnant. Hermione took a pause just before she got to the doorway of the kitchen again, she took a few deep breaths to steady her nerves and once she felt ready, she made her way back in just as Charlie had finished putting the last dish away.
"Charlie?"
Charlie turned at the sound of her voice, he slung the dish towel over his shoulder and leaned against the counter as she smiled brightly. "Yes dear?"
Hermione giggled, he always loved trying out a new pet name on her. "I've got something for you" She held out the gift bag towards him, trying not to laugh as he looked confused at the bag.
"Hermione, you shouldn't have" Charlie gingerly took the bag from her, "I didn't get you anything"
Hermione smirked, "Believe me Char, you've gave me enough"
Charlie shook his head at Hermione's odd behaviour as he opened the bag, he pulled out small wads of coloured tissue paper before finding a variety of gifts. The first gift he pulled out was a small, brown teddy bear that had a dummy in its mouth. His eyes flickered towards Hermione, the confusion still etched on his face as she continued to pull out the various items such as; a volume control (what that meant he had no idea), ear defenders, a rattle that had a small teddy bear clinging to the side of it, a bio hazard bag, emergency nappies, bio-chemical gloves, an emergency gas mask and baby care instructions. Underneath that all, remained one rectangular box, he pulled the lid off and saw a white stick laying neatly on top of more tissue paper. His heart was beginning to pound as he began to understand the meaning of all the gifts, he flipped the stick around and felt ready to faint as he read the one single word on the screen.
Pregnant
Charlie was pretty sure he had stopped breathing, he felt like the room was spinning and found himself clutching onto the counter tightly as he tried to wrap his head around this.
Sensing the worst, Hermione rushed over to Charlie and put a steady hand on his shoulder, her own heart beating so quickly she could hear the rhythm in her ears. "Charlie? Are you okay?" She asked softly
Charlie's eyes met Hermione's, for a moment his mouth was so dry that he couldn't speak, he knew the words he wanted to say but they just weren't coming out. Charlie finally took a deep breath to try settle himself, once he found that the room had stopped spinning, he loosened his grip on the counter. "We're having a baby?" He asked slowly
Hermione nodded, a small smile on her face
"We're having a baby" Charlie repeated, this time to himself, the words felt foreign in his mouth, it was a sentence he thought he would never get to say.
"We're having a baby" Hermione whispered
Without warning, Charlie sprung into action, he let out a delighted yell and picked Hermione up off her feet and spun her round. "I'm going to be a Dad? You're going to be a Mum? We're having a baby!"
Hermione laughed in delight as Charlie spun her around, this had been the reaction she had been hoping for, to see the delight and wonder on Charlie's face as he came to the realisation that they were having their first child together brought tears to Hermione's eyes. Although, the more Charlie kept spinning her, the more nauseous she was feeling. She tapped Charlie repeatedly on the arm until he gently placed her on the ground. Charlie took one glance at the greenish complexion before he knew what was about to happen, he side stepped out of the way as Hermione dashed to the bathroom to throw up the delicious breakfast she had made.
Charlie stared at the open doorway, "Note to self: Don't spin my pregnant wife"
Authors Note: This is a shorter chapter, but I wanted to dedicate a small, fluffy chapter on how Hermione tells Charlie about the baby. For anyone who wants to know about the items she gave him, they come part as a 'Daddy Survival Kit' which I thought would be quite funny. A volume control is a dummy/pacifier for the baby.
