Chapter 39

Anabelle woke up at around 1 o'clock the day of the battle, having not been able to sleep the day before. She slowly stood up and stretched, popping her neck along with her knuckles. Looking out her window, she saw that it was overcast outside, making her frown

She slowly walked to the bathroom, grabbing a pair of jeans, a bra, a pair of underwear, and a t-shirt on the way. Once here, she peeled off her pajamas and stepped into the shower, turning on the faucet to the red line on the far left. She sighed softly when the hot water hit her back massaging her nerves and untying the knots.

Once she washed her hair and body, she rinsed before stepping out and wrapping herself in a towel. She then drained out the water in her hair before braiding it down the middle of her back. Once done she changed into her clothes, brushed her teeth, and walked out of the bathroom, making her way to the stairs.

When she got downstairs, she was met by Emily silently eating a salad in the dining room. "Hey Em." Anabelle greeted before walking to the fridge and pulling out the strawberry smoothie she made the night before.

"Hey, Belle. How did you sleep? I tried waking you up earlier but you were pretty out of it."

"I slept ok. It took me a while to go to sleep but once I did, it was good. I guess it's just my nerves." She took a sip of her smoothie before walking to the living room. "Do you mind if I watch some TV?" She asked.

"I don't mind dear. I'm going to go read in my room." Anabelle thanked her before grabbing the remote from the coffee table and turning the TV on. She mindlessly clicked through the channels before landing on ABC Family. They were showing Hercules. Anabelle leaned back into the couch and tried to relax, hoping wherever the boys were, they would be safe.

Anabelle woke up to a loud ringing sound at around 5 o'clock. She looked up and saw it was the landline. She walked over to it and picked it before saying, "Uley Residence, this is Anabelle."

"Belle! It's Seth!"

"Seth? What's up? Why are you breathing like that?" He was breathing erratically over the phone and she could hear voices in the background.

"Look Belle, you gotta come quick. It's Jacob. He's been hurt." Anabelle's face paled and she dropped the phone, her breath catching in her throat. Without a second glance, she ran out of the door and tumbled through the muddy ground to Jacob's house. Surely they would bring him there because of Billy. She ran as fast as she could down the road, not even bothered by the mud caking her shoes.

She suddenly stopped in the front yard when she heard a piercing scream coming from inside. Tears welled up in her eyes and she let out a small sob. The pack, who were all standing on the porch heard her and looked to where she was standing. Paul quickly bounded towards her and gathered her up in his arms before she collapsed. "No, no, no, no, no." She chanted. "Please no."

"Come on," Paul whispered before grabbing her by that waist and holding her to his chest. She sobbed into his chest, flinching when she heard another scream.

"What happened?" Anabelle sobbed into his shoulder. She looked around to see the pack still silent. Leah was the one to step up and pull Anabelle into her arms.

"It's all my fault. After the battle, we all thought it was over. But it wasn't. There was still one more newborn, and he charged at me from the back. I thought I could handle it but it got worse and they almost crushed me. Luckily Jake pulled them off me, but it was able to get its arms around him."

"Don't let them get their arms around you." Anabelle recited Jasper's words from the training session. "They'll crush you instantly."

Leah nodded in shame. "The whole right side of his body is shattered, the vamp doc is with him right now, resetting them." Just then, another piercing scream echoed out of the house, causing Anabelle to let out a sob.

"It's his own fault. Jacob's an idiot." Paul spit out causing Anabelle to look at him in disgust.

"Paul, that's enough! Jacob tried his best." Sam replied, glaring at Paul to keep his mouth shut. Paul rolled his eyes, not happy about what he had seen in Jacob's head before the battle.

"Oh no." She collapsed into Leah's arms causing both girls to sit on the porch. Anabelle then looked up when a warm hand landed on her shoulder, it was Billy with a look of deep sadness on his face. Anabelle slowly got up and embraced the older man, wanting him to know he wasn't alone.

"My son will get through this. He's strong. But he does need you, Belle. He will need you by his side. The legends say the best way for a wolf to heal is the knowledge that his imprint is with him." Anabelle nodded and gave him a slight smile.

"I will Billy. I'll be here with him, for however long he needs." She quickly gripped the older man's hand when another scream rang out causing everyone to jump. A few seconds later, a giant orange truck barrels its way down the road, stopping in front of the little red house. Stepping out of it was Bella Swan with a worried expression etched on her face.

"Is he ok?" She asked. Anabelle glared at her before stepping up, in front of the older girl.

"No! He's not. No thanks to you." She fumed. "Thanks to you Bella, Jacob is in there getting his bones re-broken because your dumbass decided to shack up with a vampire. Was a normal life not good enough for you? You just HAD to be immortal so you could what? Stay young, thin, and pretty? How pathetic!"

Anabelle realized she was charging at Bella when warm arms wrapped around her. She looked up to see Embry with his arms caged around her body. She tried fighting him off but it was no use. Everyone's attention was then moved to Carlisle, who had just come out of the house. He turned to address Billy. "I gave him some morphine but his body temperature will burn it off. I'll come set up a drip once it does." He then moved his attention to Bella. "He's asking for you." And with a last saddened look towards Anabelle, the doctor was gone.

Bella took no time in bounding towards the door, leaving Anabelle shocked beyond words. Jacob was asking for Bella? In his most vulnerable state, physically, emotionally, and mentally, he chose to see Bella first? Maybe it was for a good reason. Maybe he pronounced her name wrong?

Anabelle sighed before sitting herself down on the porch, hugging her knees to her chest. She then began to silently pray. She hadn't prayed in so long that she was surprised she remembered all the words. " Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen."

Billy smiled at the young girl. He had once seen her pray, years ago. It was when her family moved to La Push when she was 10. He had come across them when testing out his driving. Jacob had installed a system where Billy could drive with no help from us feet, giving him the ability to not be driven for. But as he was testing, he accidentally swerved off the street and into the Lahote mailbox. The young girl that was reading on the porch, screamed and immediately started praying that the older man would not die.

Billy smiled at the memory, before glancing at his son's imprint. She was deeply immersed in her praying while everyone else watched her with solemn looks. Five minutes later, Bella exited the house and, without a look to anyone, walked off the porch and entered her truck, before turning on the ignition and speeding away. "You should go see him." Billy advised Belle. She nodded silently before standing and walking into the house quietly.

She took a deep breath while walking down the hallway before slowly opening Jacob's door. She peeked inside and almost sobbed. There Jacob lay, sweating profusely. His right arm was wrapped in a cast along with half of his chest. She slowly inched her way inside, causing Jacob to turn his head and look at her.

Pain. Immense pain. Everything was dark and Jacob's body felt so sore and painful. His bones were on fire and he was gasping heavily as Carlisle finished wrapping up his arms. He slowly opened his eyes, groaning softly in pain. He felt hot, which was a first for him. "Bel-be." He rasped.

Carlisle, who was writing something down on a clipboard, turned around and softly smiled. "Hello Jacob. I'm glad you're awake. Don't move too much, your bones are in the perfect position for them to heal. I gave you morphine but you will burn it off fast so I'll be back to set up an IV."

Jacob nodded before muttering a soft, "Th- thank y-you."

Carlisle nodded before asking, "Is there someone you would like to see? In particular?"

"Be-bell..uh." Jacob grunted out before gasping. Carlisle softly nodded before leaving the room. Jacob then took a much needed deep breath before opening his eyes even more and looking around the room. He could see that it was already dark out and he could hear the birds in the forest. He turned his head slightly to see Bella standing at his doorway looking at him with worry. He looked at her in confusion before asking,"What are y-you do-doing here?"

"Carlisle said you wanted to talk to me first. I assume it was because of what happened back there." She said shyly before bowing her head.

"That was a mistake." He rasped. "That shouldn't have happened."

"You didn't stop it though." Bella pointed out while walking up and sitting down on his desk chair. "You didn't pull away."

"You are with Edward." Jacob rapsed out. "I have a girlfriend, an imprint. You are leaving and never coming back. It's over. There's no reason for us to see each other."

Bella sighed before saying, "I don't regret it." Jacob said nothing, knowing he didn't have the same answer. He just looked at her, waiting for her to leave. "Fine." She states before getting up from her seat. "I'm leaving for now. But you are my best friend Jake and I will prove it to you."

He watched her leave, hoping she wouldn't come back. He was tired of Bella's attitude and aggravated with her view on the world. Like it wasn't good enough for her, and all she wanted was to be immortal. His train of thought was halted when he heard movement coming from his door. There stood Anabelle, wearing a pair of jeans and a washed up t-shirt. He looked back up at her face when he heard her sniffle. You could tell she had been crying, from her reddened eyes and pale complexion.

"Belle." He sighed out. She walked closer to him, tears streaming down her face. He held out his left hand to her, leading her to walk slowly towards him. She sat down on the chair and looked at him with tears clouding her eyesight.

"Oh my god, what happened?" She hiccuped. "Y-y yo-you...you said. Oh my god." She grabbed a washcloth from his bed side and dabbed the apparent sweat on his face before taking a breath. " I was so scared J. When Seth called, all of my fears came to life. And, I didn't know what to expect. I'm just glad you're alive."

He smiled at her and shushed her when she started to cry harder. "I'm sorry for worrying you. But we won. And there are no more vamps out there to scare you. And when I'm fully healed, we are going to have the best summer ever." Anabelle laughed through her tears and brushed through Jacob's hair.

"I'd really like that." She told him before placing a kiss on his forehead.

"You missed." He told her, smiling slyly at her. She laughed before bending down and giving him a short kiss.

"Don't worry. We'll have time for that later."

Bella angrily slammed the front door before trudging up the stairs and into her room. Charlie watched with interest before walking up the stairs and following her. "Bells? What's wrong?" He asked. Bella turned around with tears streaming down her face.

"Dad, he said he didn't want to see me again. He-he. He said there's no reason to keep in contact." Charlie sighed angrily. He knew Jacob was angry at his daughter but that didn't give him the right to cause her pain like this. "I'm just going to bed dad, goodnight." She closed the door before Charlie could say anything else and laid in her bed.

There had to be something she could do in order for Jacob to not be with Anabelle. Something to make him distance himself. Then a smirk erupted from her face. Bella knew exactly what to do. Jake would be her's, and she was going to get her best friend back.
