Chapter 28!
Another few weeks had passed and the cadets had been given the choice of where they would like to be recruited, but the top ten cadets had the privilege of living in the Inner District which was the territory of the Military Police.
Lorna had heard Mikasa and Eren would be joining the Survey Corps along with Armin, their destinies were now in their own hands which worried her because they were still so young. She had met up with them not long after they had graduated, they had a lot of catching up to do.
Eren was full of questions, he wanted to hear about Lorna's experiences outside of Wall Maria. She only told him little of what the territory beyond Wall Maria was like because she wanted to shield him from the horrors that lay beyond the walls, but he would learn in time what it was like for himself when he fully graduated.
Armin was more interested in Lorna's correspondent position in the scouts, he had many questioned about what it entailed and how she analyzed the journals for Commander Erwin Smith. But Mikasa didn't say much to Lorna, she kept her distance from her and stayed close to Eren's side which he disliked. He hated that Mikasa always looked out for him, he wanted her to stop treating him like a child and let him have his own independence.
Today they were leaving for a reconnaissance mission beyond Wall Rose, but there was a lot of excitement coming from the townsfolk of the Trost District. The streets were lined with people has always, but the crowds mood seemed to be more pleasant this time. They normally got chants of hatred when they were on their match towards the gate of Wall Rose, but people were saying that five years without an incident was a good omen.
Lorna was riding not far behind Erwin, it felt strange though because Levi was riding with her group instead of his own. She had looked over her shoulder at him a few times because she had heard Hange talking to him about catching Titans once again, the expression of Levi's face told her he was getting fed up of her nonstop conversations about Titans.
Lorna bit at her bottom lip while she glanced around at the crowds lining the street, she knew sometimes April came to see her off with Jacob. But then she remembered that April had started her new cleaning facilities position at the Boot Camp about a month ago, also Jacob should be at school right now.
Lorna did notice Eren standing in the crowds of people with some other Trainee Corps, he had a big smile on his face has he watched the Survey Corps riding passed him, he was standing with Armin and Mikasa. She couldn't help but smile slightly at him, but he had no idea what lay ahead of him just yet.
It wasn't long until the Survey Corps had come to a halt at the gate of Wall Rose, they had to wait for a few minutes for the gate of Wall Rose to be opened. She looked up at the wall and saw the outline of people running along the top of Wall Rose, she then heard chains rattling and the sound of the gate slowly opening.
Lorna turned her attention to her horse when she heard him let out a soft neigh, she gently stroked his neck and told him it was okay. She hadn't really given her horse a name yet, she was unsure what to call him seeing has he wasn't even hers to keep.
After awhile Lorna's horse had finally settled down, the horses sometimes could sense the anxious vibes in the air around them before they left on expeditions or reconnaissance missions. She turned her gaze towards the horse next to her when she heard it grunt, but to her surprise the horse belonged to Levi.
Lorna had sworn there had been a female solider riding next to her not long ago, she wondered how he gotten there. Levi made eye contact with her, he didn't say anything to her. She then heard Hange waffling on again about abnormal Titans and other subjects about the reconnaissance mission, she truly needed to learn how to control herself.
Lorna leaned forward slighting so she could see Hange from her horse, Hange had her hands cupped together underneath her chin with a joyous expression on her face.
" Pfft, pathetic..." Levi said in annoyed tone. " Her behaviour alone is unacceptable for her rank."
" Is she always like this before reconnaissance missions?" Lorna asked while she turned her gaze towards him. " She's normally quite calm when she goes out on expeditions, that's if you could call her behaviour at times calm."
" I think the excitement has gone to her head." Levi replied.
" That would explain a lot from all the talking she is doing, she sounds like a chatty Jackdaw." Lorna said, she gently patted her horse's neck. " I bet the Titans can hear her from the other side of Wall Rose, they're most probably waiting for her with a knife and fork."
" It wouldn't surprise me if they were." Levi said.
" Captain Levi, I'm going to say something that may sound strange..." Lorna said, she turned her gaze toward him again. " But this is the longest conversation we've had for a very long time, you're actually being sociable for once."
" Maybe you've caught me in a good mood, it won't happen again." Levi said.
Lorna sightly frowned at him and watched him turn his gaze towards Hange, he could be so blunt at times. She listened to him talking with Hange, he then told her that they had found the craziest abnormal already.
Hange seemed interested in what Levi had told to her, she asked him where in a confused tone. He then broke the news to Hange that he was talking about her while he turned her head to face him with his hand.
The expression on Hange's face was quite amusing, she was more confused by his answer. Lorna turned her gaze towards the gate of the Rose District and waited for Erwin to give them the matching signal, it wasn't long until they heard their moving out command.
They rode forward towards the now open gate of Wall Rose, it always scared her each time she left on the reconnaissance missions in case she never returned home. It was a lot different than expeditions, they didn't have any decoys with them this time.
A Few Hours Later
They had left the safety of Wall Rose a few hours ago, they had rode across the district beyond the Trost District and arrived in the Shiganshina District. It hadn't been long until they came across a Titan, the soldiers of the Survey Corps leapt into action and cut the nine meter Titan down.
Each Titan was different, there were abnormal Titans and typical Titans. Lorna was always amazed how human looking they were, it was strange. They all looked different from each other and had their own facial features, it was kind of scary how they resembled people.
Erwin gave out his orders, he wanted each area of the Shiganshina District to be patrolled and any stray Titans to be cut down immediately. The reconnaissance mission would continue, but they needed to make sure the area was safe at all times.
Erwin gave out more orders, he wanted lookouts to be set up on some of the rooftops. He planned to set up an outpost by a fountain that still remained in the Shiganshina District's market place, he wanted the market to be secure.
The soldiers split up into groups of seven, they all headed out into different directions. Lorna was left behind with Erwin's group, she knew the territory of the Shiganshina District was vast.
Lorna was unsure of the distance of the width and length of the district. She only knew the height of Wall Maria, she hadn't really read into how big the district really was and how much land it covered inside of Wall Maria.
The remaining soldiers rode on with Erwin, it felt strange riding down the old streets most of them use to call home. The houses were now falling apart, they had become homes for the wildlife instead.
Lorna's heart ached when she rode passed the old remains of the Tavern she had lived in for many years before Wall Maria had been breached by the Colossal Titan, she never found out what had happened to her lost friends. It wasn't long until they arrived at the stone fountain in the middle of the market place, it still looked the same.
There were still market stalls and crates stacked up outside of old stores, it had remained untouched for the last five years. Lorna had many fond memories of this place, it only seemed like yesterday when there were crowds of people shopping for food and market stall owners yelling out prices for their goods.
Lorna dismounted her horse and one of the veterinary officers took the reins from her, the horse was then lead away to a sheltered area near some market stalls.
The soldiers started unstrapping the wagon's cargo, they unpacked a few wooden crates from the back of wagons and set up a little outpost near the stone fountain for Erwin. He could then study his maps and mark off the different areas, the Shiganshina District needed to be surveyed first. It was important to keep track of the Titan numbers in this district while they remained here.
Lorna was given the task of helping move some baskets from market stalls and checking them, she was surprised how many of the baskets were still in good condition after all of these years. She carried a few baskets at a time to the wagons and handed them to the other soldiers who placed them on the back of the wagon.
Lorna was told to check the market stall near the old bakery, she gave the solider a nod of her head before she hurried over to the market stall. But has she got closer to the market stall she noticed something or someone lingering behind the door frame of the old bakery's doorway, she couldn't help but stop dead in her tracks.
It wasn't long until Lorna saw an outline of a person stepping into the doorway of the old bakery, she couldn't see who the person was though because the person was wearing a dark coloured hooded cloak. She was unsure if the person was one of the soldiers on duty, but the person seemed out of place standing in the old bakery's doorway.
Lorna stood and stared at the person standing in the doorway, whoever it was they had their gaze firmly set on her. She heard Erwin say her name from across the market place, he told her to get back to her duties, but she glanced at him over her shoulder before she quickly returned her gaze towards the doorway. But the person was no longer there, it was like the person had vanished into thin air.
" Miss Faith, I will not repeat myself again! But may I ask what you're staring at? Why are you neglected your set duties?!" Erwin asked, he joined her side and rested his hand on one of the hand grips of his Maneuver Gear. " Explain yourself."
" I don't know, I'm unsure what I was staring at..." Lorna replied.
" It looks like you've seen a ghost." Erwin said in a softer tone. " I understand how many memories you must have of this market place from your past, but please keep your wits about yourself. This place is more dangerous than you'll ever realize, there are Titans nearby and unknown dangers lurking amongest the ruins of the buildings."
" I know sir, my apologies." Lorna said.
" Very well, now continue with your duties." Erwin said.
" Yes sir." Lorna said.
Lorna continued with her duties until the silence was broken by a male solider yelling for Commander Erwin Smith, the solider swooped down from one of the rooftops and hurried over to Erwin. He quickly saluted him and caught his breath before he gave him some terrible news, it wasn't long until panic began to spread through the outpost.
" Sir, we've got reports of a swarm of Titans heading towards the North!" The solider said, he took a few deep breath before he pointed towards the Northern direction. " There is smoke raising into the sky, I fear that something terrible has happened to the Trost District!"
Lorna listened to the solider speaking with Erwin, it seemed liked history was repeating it's self once again. Soldiers began to take their horses from veterinary officers and mounted them, they needed to reach the Trost District fast.
Lorna's horse was brought to her by veterinary officer, she mounted her horse while they waited for Erwin's orders. But her thoughts quickly turned to April and Jacob, they were in danger. It was like the Shiganshina District all over again, so many lives had been lost at the hands of the Titans and it seemed like it may be happening again.
" Sir, we need to regroup and head back to the Trost Districts!" One soldier said with panic in his voice. " Our families and the townsfolk will need our protection!"
" I agree!" Erwin said, he looked around at his surroundings. " We need to regroup and meet back here at the market place, we will not surrender another wall to the Titans!"
Erwin gave out some direct orders to some nearby soldiers, he ordered them to spread the word and regroup with the rest of the Garrison while he himself would do the same. They would be heading straight back to the Trost District after they had regrouped, they just hoped that Wall Rose hadn't been breached for the sake of the townsfolk living in that district.
The soldiers saluted Erwin before they all split up into small groups of four, the remaining soldiers left behind began to pack the outpost back onto the wagons. Erwin mounted his horse and gave out some more orders, they would also be helping with the regrouping of the soldiers. Lorna was told she would be riding with Erwin's group, they headed along one of the empty streets. It wasn't long until they stumbled across a group of soldiers.
Erwin explained to them about the situation that was unfolding to the North of them, they looked shocked at what they had been told by their Commanding officer. They agreed to head back to the stone fountain in the square, the soldiers left and headed in the direction of the market place.
Erwin's group rode forward and turned into another street, they rode passed many derelict houses. There was injured soldiers and partly devoured soliders who had been eaten by the Titans in one street, it was awful that they couldn't stop help them.
They carried on riding down the street, they heard many solider's screams and calls for help from different streets around them. Lorna had even heard roars of the Titans echoing through some of the streets, it was frightening.
Some of the sights that greeted them were horrible, there were fallen comrades scattered throughout the streets and blood running into old gutters. Over the years Lorna's stomach had grown strong, but it never stopped her heart from aching for each solider they had lost on the expeditions.
" Sir!" One solider yelled has he joined Erwin's side. " I've been told that Captain Levi isn't far from this location, he has slain at least two Titans!"
" Take us to him.!" Erwin said.
The solider rode ahead of them and they followed after him, it wasn't long until Levi was in their sights. Has they rode closer they saw Petra kneeing by a solider's side, it looked like the solider hadn't made it.
They halted their horses while Erwin called out Levi's name, he quickly explained to him that they were leaving immediately. He then told Levi about the swarm of Titans heading North towards the Trost District.
" It's just like five years ago, something tells me this is going to end badly." Erwin said, he lowered his gaze from Levi and Petra. " For all we know the wall may have already been reduced to rubble."
Erwin told Levi and Petra to regroup their squad, he wanted everyone to meet at the fountain in the market place before they rode back to the Trost District.
Lorna watched Levi and Petra maneuvering themselves onto one of the rooftops above them, they then disappeared into the district. They continued riding the streets until they reached the fountain in the market place, they then waited until all of the surviving soldiers returned before they rode back to the Trost District.
