Finally, the last chapter arrived! I'm so sorry that it took so long. My apology and explanations are at the bottom.

First: shout-outs:

CHSHiccstrid (guest): Thank you for your kind words, I'm really glad you liked the story. I hope this last chapter lives up to your expectations.

kat (guest): I had this chapter planned since the beginning of the story to close it up, I just never got to finish it. So here you are. I hope you like it.

Chapter 33

"We have dragons!"

For the rest of the night this sentence rang in my ears.

The next morning, when I woke up, I somehow felt different than usually. At first, I didn't remember why. But then that dream suddenly came back to my mind.

Still sleepy I stood up and slowly walked to the main room. Hiccup was standing next to the fire place and prepared breakfast. When he noticed me entering he turned around and smiled.

"Good morning." he greeted me cheerfully.

"Morning." I grumbled back, definitely not fully awake yet.

I plopped down on a chair and waited for breakfast to be ready, while slowly feeling more and more awake.

When Hiccup finally approached with the breakfast I finally felt awake enough to talk about last night.

"There is something I dreamed about last night..." I started. Hiccup looked up curiously. "It was about you and Toothless and the beginning of your friendship."

"Go ahead." was his only reaction, so I told him every single detail of that strange dream and even mentioned my reactions to them. Once I ended, Hiccup looked at me surprised.

"Amazing. That's pretty much exactly what happened back then."

Remorse was building inside of me and I carefully took his hand before asking that one question that my dream never answered. "How long ago was this?"

"Five years."

A pang of guilt hit my chest. He had been fifteen when he had endured all this. "I'm so sorry for not being there for you!" I said in all honesty. But as soon as I uttered those words Hiccup looked up, a mixture of anger and sadness filling his eyes.

"Why didn't you come back?" he asked with a quiet voice.

"I tried to. During those first weeks I repeatedly climbed onto Cloudjumper's back and told him to bring me back here. He flew me near enough so I could see the village, but once we approached they started to try and shoot us out of the sky. After weeks of failing I simply gave up. And never tried again. And only a little later Drago started showing up, taking all my attention off of trying again to get home. Instead I protected the home I had found at the sanctuary."

Hiccup nodded, understanding visible in his face.

"I would've probably done the same", he admitted. "And I forgave you long ago. There's no need to feel guilty."

During the following weeks we repeatedly talked about the dream. And at one point I realized that I had finally forgiven myself for being absent during Hiccup's first twenty years of life.

I know that this isn't very long. But I think it is a nice close to the story. Again, I am so sorry that I didn't update in almost a year. I'll try to be more regular in the future. It was just a hard year for me, though nothing serious happened, and I didn't feel like writing at all. Thank you again for the reviews. I really hope you liked this story and stay for more. If you have any story ideas you'd like me to write, tell me either in the reviews or via dm. I'm thinking about writing a short story and one-shot collection and am in desperate need for ideas. Until then, feel free to leave a review. I read every single one of them. Merry Christmas everyone!
