Chapter 59: Dark Tidings

October 30, 1870

At Scarlett's palace in Cinnibar, Scarlett and Eda sat in Scarlett's study.

"So," Scarlett said to Eda. "How are you liking Cinnibar?"

"Your kingdom is better than I could've ever imagined," Eda admitted.

"Trust me, Cinnibar is a great kingdom already. But this palace is an absolute paradise compared to the Boiling Isles," Scarlett chuckled.

"You won't get an argument from me on that," Eda acknowledged as she looked out into space.

"Penny for your thoughts," Scarlett offered.

"I was thinking about Lilith," Eda revealed. "The Emperor is going to throw a fit when he finds out that Lilith had me and Lady Candice, and we escaped."

Meanwhile, on the Boiling Isles, Lilith stood before Emperor Belos.

"Are you telling me you had both Eda, and Maleficent's creation, and you let them escape?!" Belos demanded to know.

"The young woman with them shot a powerful spell at us which blinded us for a few moments," Lilith explained. "When our sight returned, they had managed to escape through a portal."

"You disappoint me, Lilith!" Belos said in disgust. "I thought you were better than that. I can always find another to be head of my coven if you no longer want the job?"

"That won't be necessary, My Emperor," Lilith answered in fear. "My sister will eventually be back, and when that happens, we'll be waiting."

"Very well," Belos relented. "You may leave."

"Yes, My Emperor," Lilith acknowledged as she left the room.

"I'll have you someday, Eda," Belos thought to himself. "You, and your portal to the Human Realm."

Away from the Boiling Isles, back in the Ever Realm, a group of witches belonging to the Witch Revolutionary Front was meeting in a large house located in a forest. Addressing the group was a witch named Elenwen who was the leader of the Witch Revolutionary Front.

"My sisters," Elenwen began. "It is time to plan our revenge on those who attacked us in Arendelle. I was thinking it would be worthwhile to strike them during Wassailia, one of their most sacred holidays."

The witches gathered clapped in approval.

"Let our planning begin," Elenwen smiled as the witches gathered cheered in evil delight.

October 31, 1870

It was Halloween afternoon in Enchancia. Thirteen-year-old Calista had wanted to go Trick or Treating with her thirteen-year-old friend Melanie Ludwin who lived in the Village of Evermore Landing which was on the other side of Enchancia Castle. Seventeen-year-old Dorrie had volunteered to go Trick or Treating with Calista and Melanie. As the three walked around Evermore Landing, Dorrie directed them toward the village docks.

"Where are we going, Dorrie?" Calista asked, curious.

"I have a surprise for the two of you," Dorrie smiled at Calista and Melanie.

In a few minutes, Dorrie, Calista, and Melanie arrived at the dock where the Floating Palace was docked. The Floating Palace was all decked out for Halloween.

"Surprise!" Dorrie cheered. "Starting this Halloween here in Evermore Landing, the Floating Palace is open for Trick or Treating."

"Wonderful!" Calista said in delight.

"Do we get to go aboard?" Melanie asked in awe.

"We sure do!" Dorrie happily answered.

Dorrie, Calista, and Melanie stood in line and waited their turn to board the Floating Palace. In a short while, the three found themselves aboard and were directed to the rear area of the ship.

"Lady Dorrie!" Admiral Vasquez happily called out. "Miss Calista! Miss Melanie! Welcome aboard!"

"Thank you, Admiral," Dorrie happily acknowledged.

"If the three of you will get in line, we're ready to start the next tour of the haunted library," Vasquez announced.

Dorrie, Calista, and Melanie got into line, and soon everybody in line walked into the library aboard the Floating Palace. The library was dressed up for Halloween, with Halloween decorations and fake cobwebs having been put into place. As everybody looked around the library, the ghost of Sir Dax appeared before them.

"Happy Halloween!" Dax smiled as the ghost of Boo the bat appeared alongside him. "Welcome to the haunted library. Please don't be afraid. Boo and I are friendly ghosts, here to entertain you."

Everybody had a grand time watching as Dax and Boo performed a variety of ghostly tricks. Meanwhile, in Dunwiddie, seventeen-year-old Candice was having fun taking ten-year-old Timothy, ten-year-old Elizabeth, ten-year-old Molly, ten-year-old Nonya, eleven-year-old Marie, and eleven-year-old Sam Trick or Treating. In a little while, the group arrived at the Dunwiddie Community Center where the village's annual Halloween party was being held. As they walked in, eighteen-year-old Jade was entertaining some of the children who had gathered with a ghost story.

"When I was at Wandlight Academy, we had a legend of a woman dressed in black who walked with a cane," Jade began. "The woman would throw pebbles at those who passed by her."

"Ooh!" the children exclaimed, intrigued.

"One night, a group of schoolboys was walking to their dorm when they passed the woman in black," Jade continued. "As she usually did with others who passed her, she threw pebbles at the boys. One of the boys was so annoyed that he raced up to the woman. As he was about to grab the woman by her cloak, she vanished, leaving only a bit of black smoke behind."

"Wow!" the children exclaimed in awe as Miss Elodie walked up.

"We have some Halloween snacks ready," Miss Elodie announced.

As the children happily followed Miss Elodie, Jade thought back to the woman in black. Because the woman used a cane, that reminded Jade of an incident that had happened a while ago which involved a cane.

Flashback (from SailorWednesdayMercury's story "From Villager To Princess Book 5"):

At Hexley Hall, Jade, Candice, and Dorrie were on their way to Magician Arts class taught by Mrs. Hauntley, when Candice stopped.

"You okay, Sis?" Dorrie asked, concerned.

"Yeah," Candice reassured Dorrie. "Just had a precognition. It was kinda fuzzy. Something about somebody picking up a cane."

Jade, Dorrie, and Candice continued to walk to Magician Arts class, as they rounded a corner, Jade spotted their friend Kurt bending over to pick up an ancient-looking cane.

"Candice, what's going on?" Jade asked, puzzled.

"My precognition ability is kicking in," Candice explained to Jade. "Kurt will be in danger if he picks up that cane."

"Kurt!" Jade warned. "Don't pick up that cane!"

But it was too late. When Kurt picked up the cane, a strange sensation washed over him.

"Kurt? Hmph! Kurt is no more! I am Sir Artemis! Brother to Crown Princess Delilah of the Kingdom of Fairies on the Mystic Isles!" Kurt exclaimed.

"Kurt's mind is in the past," Dorrie exclaimed. "Candice, what do you think we should do?"

"You and I shouldn't do a thing, Dorrie," Candice corrected. "Jade should do something."

Jade was shocked, "Me? But just what can I do to help Kurt?" she asked Candice.

Suddenly, Jade saw her Ruby Carbuncle card spirit appear.

Ruby Carbuncle began talking to Jade.

Since neither Dorrie nor Candice could see Ruby Carbuncle, they didn't know who Jade was talking to.

"Jade, who are you talking to?" Candice asked.

"Got it, Ruby!" Candice and Dorrie heard Jade exclaim.

"You've gone crazy, Jade! Ruby has Divination this period!" Dorrie observed.

"Not that Ruby, Dorrie! Ruby Carbuncle! You and Candice can't see her like I can because she's a Duel Monster spirit!" Jade explained.

"Oh," Dorrie said.

"So, what's the plan?" Candice asked Jade.

"Uh..." Jade began.

"You don't have a plan!" Dorrie said to Jade.

"Even if I don't have a plan, Dorrie," Jade explained. "I might know someone who can come up with one."

"Do what you've got to do, Jade," Candice said.

End of flashback as Candice walked over to Jade, and gently patted Jade on the shoulder.

"Earth to Jade," Candice joked. "You okay, Jade?"

"Yeah," Jade smiled back. "I was just thinking about that time that you, me, and Dorrie had that encounter with Kurt and that cane."

"That was intense," Candice admitted. "But, things worked out in the end."

November 1, 1870

Lilith appeared in front of Scarlett's Palace in Cinnibar City and clutched her staff and smirked.

"Edalyn should be somewhere in there," Lilith said to herself.

"You're darn right she is," a voice said from behind Lilith as Lilith gasped, seeing Scarlett smirking as Scarlett leaned on a pillar, hands behind her head as she walked up to Lilith.

"The Scarlett Warrior. Why am I not surprised?" Lilith asked as Scarlett smiled.

"Why would you be? I live here," Scarlett smirked as the red-clothed warrior queen crossed her arms. "So, curse any good friends of mine lately?"

Lilith's eyes opened wide. "How did you know about the curse I placed on my sister?"

"Why wouldn't I know about it?" Scarlett asked. "I mean, I'm the one who came up with the recipe for the elixir to help her with the curse. I've been searching through every spellbook I have in the past three years to remove the curse from her entirely, but I found nothing. But luckily, I have the one who cursed her in the first place standing here at my doorstep."

"I am taking my sister back with me to Emperor Belos so that he can heal her and we can be a family again," Lilith declared.

"No. She doesn't want it and you have to respect that as her sister!" Scarlett said as she pulled her sword out and then lit it on fire as she posed as Lilith prepared for a fight with her staff. "If you want to get to Eda, you'll have to get through me to do it!"

"That can be arranged!" Lilith boasted. "I've been training in magic all my life. I know for a fact that even as an immortal, you are not unbeatable in a fight. I have what it takes to best you!"

"I love a good challenge," Scarlett smiled as a whistle was heard and Caitlyn (the sheriff of Cinnibar City) approached, rifle in hand to the two powerful mages.

"Not so fast!" Caitlyn announced as Scarlett sheathed her sword. "You know your own self-placed rules, my Queen. If you have a score to settle in Cinnibar City, you have to settle it in the Colosseum. That's your orders to everyone, including yourself."

"Very well," Lilith responded. "You versus me, Queen Scarlett. Witch's duel."

"I prefer sorceress," Scarlett piped up.

"Fine. Sorceress duel. Cinnibar Colosseum, tomorrow at noon," Lilith agreed.

"Noon's not soon enough," Scarlett acknowledged as she yawned and walked into the palace. "Better make yourself at home, Lily. Because tomorrow, you're gonna wish you stayed home."

As a servant led Lilith to a guest room, Colette caught up to Scarlett.

"Colette," Scarlett began. "I need you to send a message to Enchancia Castle."

November 2, 1870

At the Cinnibar Colosseum, it was a packed house. On the Colosseum floor, Scarlett was standing at one end, and Lilith was standing at the other end as Colette walked up.

"Both parties will combat until there is a clear winner," Colette announced. "Let the combat begin!"

Lilith raised her staff and fired a powerful blast of magical energy at Scarlett who fell over on the ground. The crowd booed at Lilith in response.

"Lilith's gotten better," Scarlett thought to herself. "Time to start pulling out my surprises."

Scarlett got up and transformed into a werewolf. Before Lilith knew it, Scarlett lunged at Lilith, attacking Lilith with her werewolf strength. As Lilith laid on the ground dazed, Scarlett jumped back, outstretched her arm, and produced out of thin air ... Dorrie's werewolf staff.

"Moonbeam!" Scarlett commanded as a powerful blue beam of magical energy shot from the staff. Lilith rolled just in time to miss being hit by the beam.

"You face me normally!" Lilith demanded.

"As you wish," Scarlett smirked. "I can roll with that."

Scarlett magically made Dorrie's staff disappear, then transformed back into her human form as Lilith fired another magical blast from her staff at Scarlett. As the blast was about to hit, Scarlett managed to roll out of the way as the crowd cheered. Scarlett then magically produced her flaming sword and lunged at Lilith.

"Slark!" Lilith exclaimed, taken off guard, as she dodged a sword swing from Scarlett who kept swinging at Lilith who started running from Scarlett.

"How do you like me now?" Scarlett joked as she chased after Lilith.

"Enough of this!" Lillith yelled, annoyed, as she pointed her staff at Scarlett and fired. Scarlett took a direct hit and fell to the ground. "Now we end this, Scarlett."

As Lilith stood over Scarlett. she paused for a moment to savor her upcoming victory. At that same moment, Scarlett outstretched her hand and magically produced ... Candice's White Maleficent staff.

"Repulsia!" Scarlett commanded as a powerful beam of magical energy hit Lilith, throwing Lilith to the ground. The Repulsia spell was powerful enough when using a wand. But, when used through Candice's staff, the staff increased the power of the spell threefold.

As Lilith lay on the ground, stunned, Scarlett walked up and pointed Candice's staff at Lilith.

"I ... yield," Lilith announced in defeat. "Where did you get your toys from?"

"I have friends," Scarlett smiled as she pointed to the stands. In the stands, cheering with the rest of the crowd were Dorrie and Candice.

"You!" Lilith thought to herself as she looked at Candice. Lillith then looked at Dorrie. "There are ... two of you?!"

"The winner of the match is Queen Scarlett of Cinnibar," Colette announced as she walked up.

"Time for you to be going, Lilith," Scarlett said.

"Indeed," Lilith agreed as she used her magic to produce a portal. "But know this, Scarlett - this isn't over."

Lilith disappeared through the portal. In a few seconds, the portal disappeared. Scarlett then walked to the area of the stands where Dorrie and Candice were sitting and magically produced Dorrie's staff and Candice's staff. Scarlett then handed the staffs to Dorrie and Candice.

"Thanks for letting me borrow these, ladies," Scarlett smiled at Dorrie and Candice.

"Lady Dorrie, Lady Candice," the crowd cheered in unison. "Friends of Cinnibar. Friends of our Queen."

Dorrie and Candice stood as the crowd clapped in their honor. Next to Dorrie and Candice was Princess Faith. As Faith stood with Dorrie and Candice in the stands, she smiled at her mother.

"A long time ago, there used to be tons of non-stop fighting in Cinnibar City," Faith thought to herself. "So my mom decreed that all arguments have to be settled here, so everyone can watch and enjoy."

Meanwhile, back on the Boiling Isles, Lilith emerged from her portal.

"No need to tell Emperor Belos about this defeat," Lilith thought to herself, disgusted. "At least I know where Edalyn is."

December 23, 1870

Halloween had passed, and so had November's Enchancian Day of Thanks. It was now Wassailia season at Enchancia Castle. It was a Friday afternoon in December, and guests were arriving at Enchancia Castle for the annual pre-Wassailia party for the public. The party was for visiting royalty, as well as for villagers from Dunwiddie and Evermore Landing.

Candice was walking around the great hall of the castle as everybody admired the grand Wassailia tree that was set up there. Out of the corner of her eye, Candice noticed a friend of hers (seventeen-year-old Princess Dianna of the Kingdom of Yensid) standing out of sight. Dianna was a white-skinned girl with reddish-brown curly hair and hazel eyes who was, like Candice, a witch. Dianna also had high-functioning autism which meant she exhibited no intellectual disability, but she did exhibit some problems with communication, emotion recognition and expression, and social interaction.

"Hi, Dianna," Candice smiled as she walked up.

"Hello, Candice," Dianna responded, relieved to find somebody she knew. "I thought I would stand here, out of the way."

"I know you don't like large crowds," Candice gently said. "I was thinking if you wanted, I could take you upstairs and we could look at the tree from the hallway overlooking the great hall. It would be just you and me."

"I'd like that," Dianna said, pleased. "Thank you, Candice."

"You're welcome, Dianna," Candice happily acknowledged as she led Dianna upstairs.

In a few moments, the two had reached the hallway and were now looking at the activity below.

"I notice you aren't wearing your ear protectors," Candice noticed.

"I was standing far enough away that the noise of the crowd didn't bother me," Dianna explained. "I didn't need my ear protectors to keep me calm this time around."

"I'm glad to hear that," Candice acknowledged, pleased, before changing the subject. "I love Wassailia,"

"Wassailing," Dianna began. "The practice of people going door-to-door, singing."

"I like Wassailing," Candice approved. It was normal for Dianna to say something connected to the subject being talked about. It was a part of Dianna having high-functioning autism. Dianna would also sometimes say the scientific name for an object being discussed. Candice was used to all of this. The truth be told, Candice enjoyed hearing Dianna's explanations because it allowed Candice to learn new and interesting things.

"Candice?" Dianna asked. "I'm still having a little bit of trouble with that Protego ell we learned last week at Hexley Hall. Oh, I hate it that the SP sound gets stuck in my head!"

"It's alright," Candice said in a comforting way. "I know you meant to say spell instead of ell."

"You're very kind," Dianna said, grateful.

"It's easy to be kind to a wonderful friend like you," Candice smiled. "I tell you what. After the party ends, we can go to my room and I'll show you some pointers for using Protego."

"I'd like that," Dianna said, pleased. "Thank you."

As Dianna and Candice were talking, Sir Bartleby walked up.

"Excuse me," Bartleby apologized. "I heard Dianna was here, and I wanted to say hi. I don't get to see her often."

"Sir Bartleby," Dianna smiled. "It's a pleasure to see you again."

"I'll leave the two of you to talk," Candice announced. "Dianna, I'll see you later."

As Candice left, she heard Dianna and Bartleby striking up a pleasant conversation. It was a pleasant thing to witness. When Dianna and Bartleby got together, there was always happiness. Dianna could forget about her mispronouncing some words, and Bartleby could forget about his high pitched voice. In each other's presence, they could be two normal people.

Candice soon found herself back in the great hall and started walking around. Elsewhere in the great hall, a male servant approached seventeen-year-old Abby Murphy.

"A cake from King Oberlyn and Queen Tessa," the servant announced.

"Please wheel it over to where the other cakes are," Abby instructed.

"Very good, Lady Abby," the servant responded as he wheeled the cake over to where the other cakes were. It was standard practice for royal guests to have cakes delivered to the pre-Wassailia party, so Abby didn't give it a second thought.

In another part of the great hall, a group had gathered: King Roland, Queen Miranda, eighteen-year-old James, eighteen-year-old Amber, seventeen-year-old Sofia, seventeen-year-old Lucinda, and seventeen-year-old Dorrie. With the group was King Graham, Queen Lydia, Duchess Tilly, sixteen-year-old Madeline (Tilly and Bartleby's adopted daughter), along with Miranda's parents (Javier and Gabriela) and Miranda's sister (Serafina). Tilly, upon seeing Candice, waved Candice over.

"Ah! There you are, Candice," Tilly smiled. "We were wondering where you had gotten to."

"I was spending some time with one of my friends, Princess Dianna of Yensid," Candice explained.

"A nice girl," Tilly approved. "Bartleby was looking for her."

"They're talking now," Candice reported.

"Excellent," Tilly responded, pleased. "The two of them get along so well."

"Lady Candice," Javier smiled. "A pleasure to see you again."

"Indeed," Gabriela happily agreed.

"It's been a few years since the two of you were last here," Candice commented to Javier and Gabriela. "I know Queen Miranda has been looking forward to your visit."

"This is the first chance we've had to visit," Gabriela apologized.

"It's been very busy at our winery," Javier explained. "Business has been very good these past few years."

"I've heard," Candice happily acknowledged. "Word has spread far and wide of your wines. I always make sure to have some bottles on hand in the castle's guest reserve."

"And I always make sure to have some bottles in the castle's wine cellar," Roland proudly added.

"Thank you," Javier acknowledged, pleased. "You and Miranda have a fine marriage and a fine family. Gabriela and I are very happy for the two of you."

At that moment, a flash went through Candice's mind as her precognition ability kicked in. Candice soon had a vision. In Candice's vision, Sofia was quickly pushing a cake out of the great hall. Sofia seemed to be in a panic.

"Sis?" Dorrie said to Candice, a bit worried. "You okay?"

"Yeah," Candice responded, not wanting to worry those gathered. "Just a bit tired. Guess I've overdone it a bit."

"I should say so," Violet admitted as she walked over. "You, Dorrie, and Abby have worked overtime on this party. You've made us all very proud."

"This party is a great success," Lydia praised. "Everything is perfect."

"Indeed it is," Serafina happily added. "A fine job all around."

Candice and Dorrie smiled at the praise as the conversation turned to family-related items.

"How are Roxy and JT?" Lydia asked Tilly about Tilly's infant daughter and infant son.

"They're doing fine," Tilly reported. "They're home with Spruce and Madge. And how are Jesse and Emily?"

"They're both fine," Graham proudly said of his and Lydia's baby son, Jesse, and their five-year-old adopted daughter, Emily. "They're at home."

As everybody talked, Dorrie took Candice aside.

"Candice, you had a vision, didn't you?" Dorrie wanted to know in a whisper.

"Yes," Candice whispered. "In my vision, Sofia was rushing a cake out of here like a bat out of hell. She seemed scared to death."

"Then we'll have to keep an eye on things," Dorrie whispered back. "If anything happens, we should be ready to act."

"Agreed," Candice acknowledged in a whisper.

A situation arises

After a while, Sofia started walking around the great hall. As she walked around the hall, she noticed the variety of cakes that had arrived. Her attention soon turned to a finely decorated cake with green frosting and red decoration.

"What a lovely cake," Sofia commented to a male servant standing nearby.

"Indeed, Princess Sofia," the servant acknowledged. "It's a party gift from King Oberlyn and Queen Tessa."

"Ah!" Sofia acknowledged, pleased. "I know they are here tonight with Kari. I'll have to thank them for such a wonderful looking cake."

At that moment, Baileywick stepped out into the middle of the great hall. "If I may have your attention, please," Baileywick requested. "For your holiday enjoyment, allow me to present to you Fritz and Eileen, the royal singers of Enchancia."

As everybody in the great hall clapped, Fritz and Eileen stepped forward and started singing.

(Fritz and Eileen) "Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum. A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum. Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum. To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum. So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum, when we come."

(Fritz) "Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum. I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum. I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum. That's fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum. Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum. On my drum?"

(Eileen) "Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum. The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum. I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum. I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum."

(Fritz and Eileen) "Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum. Me and my drum."

Everybody clapped for Fritz and Eileen's wonderful singing. A short while later, Sofia made her way over to where King Oberlyn, Queen Tessa, and seventeen-year-old Princess Kari were standing.

"King Oberlyn, Queen Tessa, Kari," Sofia greeted as she curtsied. "Thank you for attending our pre-Wassailia party. And thank you for the wonderful cake you brought."

"Oh, you're quite welcome, Sofia," Queen Tessa smiled. "Oberlyn, Kari, and I thought that a banana cream pie cake would be a delicious offering for today's party."

"I thought you brought the cake with green frosting and red decoration," Sofia responded, taken off guard.

"I can't say I recall such a cake, Princess Sofia," King Oberlyn declared.

"Probably a mix-up," Sofia theorized. "I look forward to trying your banana cream pie cake. If you'll excuse me, I have something to attend to. Enjoy the party."

"We will, Sofia," Kari happily responded.

As Sofia walked toward the cake with green frosting and red decoration, Lucinda quickly walked up.

"What's wrong, Sof?" Lucinda asked, concerned.

"We have a cake that appears to have come out of nowhere, Lucy," Sofia explained. "It may be nothing, but I want to check it just to be safe."

In a few moments, Sofia and Lucinda walked up to the cake which was still on a cart.

"Looks harmless enough," Lucinda observed as Sofia's amulet started glowing.

"What the?!" Sofia exclaimed, taken off guard. Sofia then took out her wand and pointed it at the cake. "Bombifica Senseafario," Sofia commanded as the tip of her wand started glowing bright orange.

"Oh my God!" Lucinda exclaimed in shock. "A bomb!"

"Lucy, get everybody further into the castle!" Sofia commanded as she grabbed the cart the cake was on and quickly pushed it toward the front doors.

"Everybody, we have an emergency!" Lucinda shouted. "Violet, Dorrie, Candice, Abby - get everybody further inside the castle, NOW!"

As everybody was making a hasty retreat, Miranda caught a glimpse of Sofia running like crazy pushing the cake.

"What's going on, Lucinda?!" Miranda demanded to know.

"That cake has a bomb in it, Mom," Lucinda reported, worried.

"SOFIA!" Miranda cried out in fear.

"Queen Miranda, we must get you to safety with the others," Baileywick advised as he and Lucinda guided Miranda away.

"No, wait!" Miranda exclaimed, frightened, as she tried to get away from Lucinda and Baileywick. "Sofia! No!"

Sofia opened the front doors of the castle, wheeled the cake outside, and closed the front doors behind her. King Roland ran up, having heard what was going on.

"Oh dear God! Sofia!" Roland cried out in panic.

"King Roland, Queen Miranda," Baileywick urged. "You must get to safety."

At that moment, a huge explosion came from outside the castle, rocking the castle in the process.

"NO!" Roland and Miranda cried out as they, Baileywick, and Lucinda were thrown to the floor by the shockwave.

"Sofia!" Miranda sobbed as Roland tried to comfort her, tears forming in Roland's eyes.

A minute passed, and the front doors of the castle opened. Sofia then staggered in, surrounded by a bright blue light. Sofia took a few steps forward, then fell to the floor as the bright blue light around her faded away. Sofia then passed into unconsciousness.

"Oh my God!" Miranda cried out as she ran over to Sofia. "We need a doctor! Is there a doctor here?!"

A woman quickly walked up. The woman was Doctor Lovisa Lightfoot who was connected to Hexley Hall's medical staff and lived in Evermore Landing.

"Oh! Doctor Lightfoot!" Miranda cried out in relief. "Thank God you're here!"

"She's still breathing," Doctor Lightfoot said as she examined Sofia. "A few bumps and bruises, but otherwise okay. But one thing puzzles me."

"What, Doctor Lightfoot?" Miranda wanted to know.

"Well, to be honest ... with the blast as strong as it was, Princess Sofia ... should be dead," Doctor Lightfoot remarked, confused.

"My amulet ... surrounded me ... with a magical force field," Sofia said as she came around.

"Oh, Sofia!" Miranda cried in relief as she hugged Sofia.

"Sof's gonna be okay!" James exclaimed in joy as everybody clapped and cheered.

A short while later, Dorrie, Candice, and Abby walked up to King Roland.

"We've checked the other cakes," Dorrie reported. "Their just cakes, with no threats attached to them."

"Thank you, Dorrie," Roland acknowledged, grateful.

"King Roland," Abby started as she stepped forward. "I allowed that cake bomb to be put with the other cakes. I assumed it was harmless since the story was it was a gift from royalty. I should have been more vigilant. People could have died because I wasn't paying attention. Your daughter could have died because I wasn't paying attention. I am so ashamed over this. You'll have my written resignation as soon as possible."

"Oh, Abby," Roland said with such compassion as he gently placed his hand on Abby's shoulder. "We were all taken off guard by this. A bomb in a cake is the last thing any of us would have thought of. You mustn't blame yourself. Your resignation is not necessary. I don't want you to think anymore about it, Abby."

"Thank you, King Roland," Abby gratefully acknowledged. "Most kind."

"Your Majesty," Constable Miles started as he walked up. "The area outside of the front doors has been cordoned off pending an investigation. The guests may leave by way of side exits. Meanwhile, we've inspected the outside of the castle where the blast took place. There's been some cosmetic damage, but the castle itself is structurally sound."

"Thank you, Constable," Roland acknowledged before turning to everybody gathered. "I know we've all had a huge scare, and I wouldn't blame you if you wanted to leave right now. I would like to suggest, however, that we continue the party. If we end the party now, those responsible for trying to kill us will have won, and I for one am not willing to give them that satisfaction. So, what do you say?"

Everybody gathered loudly clapped and cheered in approval.

"Then we'll continue the party," Roland happily announced. "Enjoy yourselves."

Later that afternoon

In Candice's room, Dianna was waiting for Candice to arrive. As she waited, Dianna sat in Candice's overstuffed chair as Candice's cat, Creamy, sat in Dianna's lap. Dianna gently petted Creamy as Creamy enjoyed Dianna's gentle touch. In a few moments, Candice walked in.

"Ah!" Candice smiled. "Creamy doesn't just sit in everybody's lap. It means he likes you."

"And I like him," Dianna smiled back, before turning serious. "I imagine you must be tired after helping to investigate the bomb site. We can get together another time."

"That's okay. I could use the diversion," Candice revealed. "Besides, I've brought two of our friends with me."

At that moment, seventeen-year-old Elainna Pearson and her seventeen-year-old cousin, Anniale, walked in. Candice, Elainna, and Anniale all belonged to Hexley Hall's Pepperton House, while Dianna belonged to Hexley Hall's Kennicot House.

"Elainna, Anniale," Dianna happily greeted. "It's nice to see you."

Dianna had known Elainna and Anniale ever since they started attending Hexley Hall two years ago.

Flashback:

It was early September of 1868. In the great hall of Hexley Hall, new students were waiting to be sorted into their houses. Among the new students were fifteen-year-old Elainna and fifteen-year-old Anniale.

"Elainna Pearson," Miss Lovegood called out as Elainna stepped forward, and Lovegood placed the sorting hat on Elainna's head.

"Yes," the sorting hat started. "Yes. I see it in your mind. Courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry. There's only one house for you. Pepperton!"

Everybody at the Pepperton table cheered as Elainna stood off to the side, waiting for Anniale to have her turn.

"Anniale Pearson," Miss Lovegood called out as Anniale stepped forward, and Lovegood placed the sorting hat on Anniale's head.

"Where one goes the other follows," the sorting hat announced, sensing Anniale and Elainna's close bond. "Pepperton!"

Everybody at the Pepperton table cheered as Elainna and Anniale started to walk over. .

"Hi," Dianna, sitting at the Kennicot table, smiled at Elainna and Anniale as they walked past. "Welcome to Hexley."

"Thank you ..." Elainna started, wondering what to call Dianna.

"I'm Princess Dianna of Yensid," Dianna introduced herself. "You can just call me Dianna."

"Nice to meet you, Dianna," Anniale smiled.

"Hey! New girls!" fifteen-year-old Derek Von Schroedor called out from the Stryker table to Elainna and Anniale. "If I were you, I wouldn't be talking to the clumsy princess. She's not all there, if you know what I mean."

As fifteen-year-old Dorrie and fifteen-year-old Candice glared at Derek in disgust from the Pepperton table, Miss Lovegood walked over to where Derek was sitting.

"Mister Von Schroeder," Miss Lovegood said with a very stern look on her face. "Fifty points are removed from Stryker House for your unfeeling actions. Also, effective immediately, you'll be put on a week's in-house suspension. Not a good way to start the school year."

As Lovegood led Derek away, Dianna sat there feeling totally ashamed. As a tear went down Dianna's face, Elainna walked up and gently put her hand on Dianna's shoulder in a show of support.

"It's okay," Elainna reassured Dianna. "Anniale and I don't judge people in that way."

"Elainna and I would love to be friends with you," Anniale smiled at Dianna.

"You would?" Dianna asked, not quite believing what was happening.

"Yes," Elainna happily confirmed.

"You should know that I have high functioning autism," Dianna explained to Elainna and Anniale.

"Our family has some friends who have high functioning autism," Anniale spoke up. "All fine people."

Dianna smiled in gratitude at Anniale's kind remark.

End of flashback, and back to the present.

"So? Who's up for some Protego training?" Candice asked as Dianna raised her hand.

"Remember, Dianna," Elainna started. "As you do the spell, remember to see in your head the shield raising up around you."

"And also remember to feel the energy coming off of your body," Anniale added.

"It's all about feeling the sensation, as well as doing the spell," Candice instructed. "On my mark. One, two, three ..."

"Protego," Dianna commanded as she raised her wand and concentrated. In a few moments, a magical force field formed around Dianna. "I'm doing it! I'm doing it!" Dianna exclaimed in joy. "Now, how do I bring it down?"

"Simply concentrate, and visualize the shield coming down," Candice answered.

Dianna concentrated, and in a few moments, the magical shield disappeared as Candice, Elainna, and Anniale happily clapped.

In King Roland's study, Roland was sitting at his desk when Constable Miles and Dorrie walked in.

"Ah!" Roland acknowledged. "There you are. Where's Candice?"

"She's in her room with Dianna, Elainna, and Anniale," Dorrie answered. "Dianna wanted some pointers on how to do a Protego spell."

"Good," Roland approved. "It will be nice having Dianna and her family here for the Wassailia holiday."

At that moment, Baileywick walked up. "King Roland, guest quarters have been arranged for Miss Elainna and Miss Anniale. They will be staying for the night, then they will return home tomorrow."

"Excellent," Roland acknowledged, before turning to Miles and Dorrie. "Your findings?"

"We've found what was left of a magical bomb," Miles reported. "It appears to have been designed to go off shortly before Princess Sofia discovered it."

"We can all be thankful for Sofia's quick action," Roland praised.

"Where is Sofia?" Dorrie asked, curious.

"In her room, resting," Roland reported. "She'll be okay, thank God. Getting back to the bomb, was it me, or was that a very powerful blast?"

"Usually, magical bombs aren't that powerful," Miles informed Roland. "They can only store so much magic, so there's a trade-off between explosive energy and the energy used to set off such a device. We have, however, discovered the remains of something that made the bomb much more powerful."

"The remains of a Laydon charge jar," Dorrie revealed. "A device designed to hold electrical energy. In this case, the energy from the Laydon charge jar would have set off the bomb ..."

"... leaving the bomb itself at full power, explaining why the bomb was so powerful," Roland theorized.

"Exactly, Your Majesty," Miles confirmed.

At that moment, Colonel Martinsen walked into Roland's study.

"Your Majesty," Martinsen started. "We've just had an official crystal ball message from the Witch Revolutionary Front taking full responsibility for the bomb here. They claim it is in retaliation for the action taken against them in Arendelle back in October."

"Were you able to trace their location?" Roland wanted to know.

"I'm afraid not, Your Majesty," Martinsen apologized. "The message was too short for a trace. Afterward, all crystal ball chatter ceased. It's as if they've gone into hiding."

"Probably worried we'll come after them with a vengeance," Dorrie spoke up.

"Indeed," Roland agreed. "Increase security around the castle, just to be safe."

"Yes, Your Majesty," Miles acknowledged.

Elsewhere in the castle, in the castle sitting room, Queen Miranda was sitting trying to compose herself after the bomb explosion. Sitting with her were Lydia and Tilly.

"We could have lost Sofia," Miranda pointed out.

"Yes, we could have. But we didn't," Lydia said in a comforting way. "We can be thankful for that."

"I know," Miranda agreed. "But why did Sofia take such a chance?"

"It's her job," Tilly gently pointed out. "As a royal sorceress, and as a Protector."

"Sofia risked it all to save all of us," Lydia pointed out. "What greater love than to risk one's life for another. And thank God for her amulet. It saved her."

"You have to admit that our little Sofia has grown into a fine woman," Tilly smiled. "She does you proud, Miranda. She does all of us proud."

"Yes, she does," Miranda admitted with a proud smile.

At that moment, Violet walked into the sitting room.

"I made some tea if the three of you are interested," Violet offered.

"That would be delightful, Violet," Tilly responded, pleased. "Thank you."

"Please join us, Violet," Miranda offered. "I can imagine this must have been a shock to you as well."

"Thank you, milady," Violet accepted. "A bomb going off here at the castle was the last thing anybody was expecting. It's a miracle that Princess Sofia wasn't hurt. She's really quite the brave thing."

Miranda, Lydia, and Tilly smiled at Violet's praise.

Meanwhile, in Sofia's room, Sofia was relaxing in an overstuffed chair as James, Amber, and Lucinda sat on a nearby couch. The four were having a pleasant conversation when a knock came at Sofia's door.

"Come in," Sofia invited.

The door opened, and in walked seventeen-year-old Princess Nella of Castlehaven who had attended the party. "I just wanted to see how you were, Sofia," Nella announced.

"I'm doing fine, Nella," Sofia smiled.

"Glad to hear it," Nella responded, pleased. "That whole bomb thing scared all of us to death."

"Tell me about it," Amber agreed.

"I just wanted to see how you were doing," Nella said as she noticed Amber, James, and Lucinda. "I see you're having a family get together. I'll come back a little later. I'm staying here at the castle overnight."

"Please, join us," James invited.

"Thank you, James," Nella responded, pleased, as she looked at everybody in the room.

"What is it, Nella?" Sofia asked, curious.

"I was just thinking how far we've come in the past few years," Nella said to Sofia as she started singing. "Staring at a stop sign. Watching people walk by. Somebody is singing loud. Got so much on your mind. Nothing's really going right. Looking for a ray of hope."

Sofia, James, Amber, and Lucinda smiled as Nella kept singing. "Whatever it is you may be going through. I know he's not gonna let it get the best of you."

James then started singing with Nella, recognizing the song, as they both looked at Sofia. "You're an overcomer. Stay in the fight 'til the final round. You're not going under. 'Cause God is holding you right now. You might be down for a moment. Feeling like it's hopeless. That's when he reminds you. That you're an overcomer. You're an overcomer."

Amber and Lucinda then joined Nella and James. "Everybody's been down. Hit the bottom, hit the ground. Ooh, you're not alone. Just take a breath, don't forget. Hang on to His promises. He wants you to know."

Each then started singing a separate verse.

(James) "You're an overcomer. Stay in the fight 'til the final round. You're not going under. 'Cause God is holding you right now. You might be down for a moment. Feeling like it's hopeless. That's when he reminds you. That you're an overcomer. You're an overcomer."

(Amber) "The same man, the great I am. The one who overcame death. Is living inside of you. So just hold tight, fix your eyes. On the one who holds your life. There's nothing he can't do. He's telling you."

(Lucinda) "You're an overcomer. Stay in the fight 'til the final round. You're not going under. 'Cause God is holding you right now. You might be down for a moment. Feeling like it's hopeless. That's when he reminds you. That you're an overcomer. You're an overcomer."

(Nella) "You're an overcomer. You're an overcomer."

(James) "So don't quit, don't give in. You're an overcomer."

(Amber) "Don't quit, don't give in. You're an overcomer."

(Lucinda) "Don't quit, don't give in. You're an overcomer."

(Nella, James, Amber, and Lucinda) "You're an overcomer."

"Thank you," Sofia smiled as she clapped. "I love you guys."

"And we love you, Sofia," Amber smiled back as she, Nella, James, and Lucinda swooped in and hugged Sofia.

Standing nearby, invisible to the group, was a heavyset black woman. The woman was Tess the angel who smiled at the touching scene. Tess then looked up toward Heaven. "This generation is going to be in good hands," Tess happily thought.

(End of Chapter 59).

Behind the scenes

I'm still doing well during this time of COVID-19, and I hope you and yours are doing well. I wish all of you a happy and safe Halloween.

In this chapter of "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia", a banana cream pie cake was discussed. I looked around and found a banana cream pie cake recipe I think you'll enjoy.

Banana Cream Pie Cake

Ingredients:

For the cake:
4 large (140 gm) egg whites, 2 yolks reserved for pastry cream
4 tablespoons (55 gm) unsalted butter, at room temperature.
½ cup (100 gm) vegetable oil.
1–1/3 cup (265 gm) sugar.
1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
1–3/4 cup (245 gm) all-purpose flour.
2 teaspoons baking powder.
¾ teaspoon salt.
2/3 cup (150 gm) milk.

For the pastry cream:
1–1/2 cups (340 gm) whole milk.
¼ cup (50 gm) sugar.
Pinch of salt.
2 tablespoons cornstarch.
½ tablespoon all-purpose flour.
2 large (30 gm) egg yolks.
2 tablespoons unsalted butter.
1 teaspoon vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste.

For assembly:
3 bananas, sliced into 1/8" thick rounds.
1–1/2 cups (340 gm) heavy whipping cream.
3 tablespoons sugar.

Instructions:

To prepare the cake:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prepare a 9 ×13" metal baking pan with baking spray.

In the clean bowl of a stand mixer, using the whisk attachment, whip the four egg whites on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form. Scoop out of the bowl and set aside while you prepare the rest of the cake.

Using the paddle attachment in the bowl of the same stand mixer, cream the butter on medium speed until smooth, about 1 minute. Add the oil and sugar and cream until light and smooth, about 2 minutes. Add the vanilla extract and stir to combine. In a separate smaller bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add half of these dry ingredients into the butter mixture and stir on low to combine. Add the milk, stirring to combine, followed by the remaining dry ingredients. Stir on low until well incorporated.

Use a rubber spatula to gently fold in the egg whites until well incorporated, being careful to not overmix. Spread the cake batter into the prepared pan and bake until toothpick insereted comes out clean, about 20-25 minutes. Take care to not overbake as the cake will be dry if so.

When done, remove from oven to cool all the way while you prep your pastry cream.

To prepare the pastry cream:

In a medium saucepan, combine 1-1/4 cups of milk, the sugar, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring regularly to bring to a simmer and dissolve the sugar. In the meantime, in a separate bowl, stir together the remaining ¼ cup milk with the cornstarch, flour, and egg yolks. Whisk to combine and set aside while waiting for the milk and sugar mixture to simmer. Once the milk and sugar mixture is barely bubbling, remove from heat and slowly pour it in a small and steady stream into the cornstarch mixture, whisking vigorously. Continue streaming in while whisking until all the hot milk has been incorporated and then return the whole lot of it back into the saucepan. Whisk constantly over medium heat until barely bubbling and the mixture has thickened to a mayonnaise consistency. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla until smooth. Immediately move to assemble the cake.

To assemble the cake:

Space out a single layer of thin banana slices on the cooled cake. Pour the hot pastry cream on top of the bananas and use a spatula to spread it all over the top evenly. Try to keep it on top of the cake instead of falling off the sides. Place a single sheet of plastic wrap directly on top of the pastry cream and place in the fridge to cool, about 30 minutes.

Once cool, pour the heavy whipping cream into a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. Whip on medium speed until slightly thickened and frothy. Add the sugar and continue whipping until stiff peaks form. Carefully remove the plastic wrap from the top of the pastry cream and spread the whipped cream over the top of the entire cake. Serve immediately with additional slices of banana or a crumble of graham crackers.

Notes:

White cakes dry out easily. Be sure to bake only until a toothpick inserted barely comes out clean.

Plastic wrap on top of the pastry cream prevents the cream from forming a "skin".

Use extra bananas, if desired.

As a shortcut, use a box cake mix!
