Chapter 34: The Spark
"May." Drew said.
They are in theater class. May has her arms crossed over her chest and she is again ignoring Drew.
"May." Drew repeated.
May didn't respond.
Drew sighed. "May, please help me understand this."
"Fine. Let me put the situation into your head." May said. She uncrossed her arms and looked at Drew. "We're together Drew."
Drew stared at her, confused.
"You sang 'Beautiful Soul' last year to me." May continued. "It was to confess your feelings for me Drew. I told you that my parents won't let me date you and then I ran out of the theater. You followed me and in the end of our conversation...everything was okay between us."
May turned her head forward again. "And you forgot about it." She mumbled.
Drew didn't respond. He was a bit in shock because he doesn't recall ever singing that song to May.
"And now...this is where we are." May said. "You've changed, Drew. I miss the Drew who would always know why I'm upset or sad. I miss the Drew who takes me out on romantic dates. I miss the Drew who...teases me, even though sometimes it drives me crazy." May said, chuckling softly.
May turns to face Drew. "Where's that Drew?" May asked, looking into Drew's eyes. "Where's the guy I fell in love with?"
Drew still didn't say anything. He did think that May gave a beautiful speech. Now he's just wondering if all of that is true.
Riiiiiinnnnnnnggggggg!
"That's the bell." May said. "I need to go to my next class." She said, getting up.
"May, wait." Drew said, standing up. May turned around to face Drew.
"Drew, I'm going to be late." May said.
"Okay, just...one minute. Please." Drew said.
"What is it?" May asked.
"Okay. You mentioned earlier that I changed like two days ago, right?"
"Yeah. On Monday." May said.
"So if I retrace what happened that day, maybe I can help you. Help us."
"Listen Drew, I really don't think there's anything you can do about it, okay? Now, I need to get to class." May turned around and started walking to the doors of the theater.
"Wait." Drew said, catching up to May. He grabbed her hand and stopped her from leaving. "Just meet me at Bellossom Fields after school, okay?"
"Drew, I don't know…" May said.
"If what you said is true about us, then...I need to fix the problems I caused."
May didn't respond. She just frowned.
"I promise." Drew said.
May glared at Drew.
"I-I mean…" Drew said. "Trust me."
"Not helping your cause." May said.
"Right. Umm...Trust me this last time. And if I don't show up, then...I'll leave it alone."
May stared into Drew's eyes for a moment before answering. "Okay. Last chance Drew."
Drew smiled and let go of May's hand. May left the theater and started walking to her next class. Drew left shortly afterwards.
May sighed. "Bellossom Fields." She muttered. She walked in the field of flowers. She watched as several grass Pokémon wandered around, tending to the flowers.
May sat down in the flowers in the middle of the field. "Let's see if Drew would keep his word this time…"
"Oh Drewy Bear!" Gabriella called, running to Drew.
Drew turned around. Gabriella stopped in front of Drew. They're outside in the front of school. Drew was going to start walking to Bellossom Fields to meet up with May, but he stopped because he heard his name being called.
"Hey, can you walk me home?" Gabriella asked, taking his hand.
"Umm...sorry Gabriella." Drew took his hand out of hers. "I have somewhere to be right now."
Gabriella cocked her head in confusion. "Really? Where?"
"I just need to talk to May about something."
("Ugh. The Princess is going to take him away from me.") Gabriella thought.
She frowned. "But Drewy," she took his hand again. "Wouldn't you want me to be happy?"
"Listen Gabriella, I-"
Before Drew could finish that sentence, Gabriella had grabbed Drew by his shirt in both of her hands and pulled him to her. Their lips made contact with each other. Drew's eyes widened once he felt Gabriella's lips on his.
Nothing. Drew felt nothing. For some reason, Drew didn't feel like he even...likes Gabriella. A spark. Drew knew that if two people were meant to be together, a kiss would feel like a million fireworks going off inside of them. But he didn't feel it. Drew needed to end this kiss.
He grabbed Gabriella's arms and pushed her off of him. She was just smiling.
"So, you liked that, huh?" Gabriella asked.
"No Gabriella. I didn't." Drew answered.
Gabriella cocked her head. "Huh? What do you mean?"
"I mean...what did you do to make me forget my memories with May?"
Gabriella laughed nervously. "I don't know what you mean. I didn't do anything about your memories."
"Listen." Drew said. "I never would date a fan and you know that. You felt jealous of my relationship with Princess May that you wanted to separate us. You did something to make me completely forget that I'm dating her. Sound familiar?"
"I umm…" Gabriella said.
"I want you to stay away from me and May." Drew said. "Now, if you'll excuse me. May's waiting." With that said, he walked off towards Bellossom Fields.
Gabriella's hands clenched. "I'll have that hotness of a man if it's the last thing I do."
May sighed and looked around. "He's not coming."
May stood up and started walking to the edge of the field of flowers. "Yet another promise...broken." May looked down and her eyes started getting watery again.
"Why did I even come here?" May muttered. "Of course he wouldn't come."
"May."
May looked up. Drew was standing right there at the edge of the flower field. A tear escaped May's eye. She stopped five feet away from Drew.
"Drew, it's over." May said.
"What do you mean it's over?" Drew asked.
"I mean…" May started, more tears escaping her eyes. "You clearly don't care enough to show up on time and...I can't do it anymore Drew."
"No May. Please." Drew said, walking closer to her. "I want to right my wrong."
May put her hands in front of her, palms facing Drew, signaling him to stop coming closer to her. He stopped walking closer.
"Please Drew. Don't come any closer."
"May, I'm sorry I'm late again, but I just got stopped by-"
"Gabriella?" May questioned, putting her hands to her sides.
Drew stared into May's eyes and could see the hurt in her eyes. "Yeah...umm…"
"Okay. She's clearly important to you, so I'll just...leave you two alone." May said sadly. She walked past Drew, looking down.
Drew quickly turned around and grabbed May's wrist.
"Drew, what are you-"
Before May could finish that sentence, Drew pulled her to him, turning her around in the process. He moved his free hand to hold the back of her neck and he pressed his lips against hers, closing his eyes.
May stared at him in shock. He's supposedly dating Gabriella, but yet he still kissed her. May doesn't know how to react. Should she push him away? Should she just let him continue? She soon found herself closing her eyes and wrapping her arms around his neck.
The spark. Drew feels the spark. He knew something wasn't right when Gabriella kissed him. But this...this feels right. Drew felt something inside of him change. He can't explain it, but all of his memories returned to his head. He remembers the time when he confessed to May. He remembers their first date. He remembers their first kiss. He remembers everything.
Drew slowly backed his face away from May's and they both opened their eyes. They stared into each other's eyes without saying anything.
Drew brushed his hand against May's cheek, tucking hair behind her ear. May blushed. Drew smiled.
"I remember now." Drew said.
"Y-You do?" May stuttered. Drew nodded.
"How could I ever forget that my girlfriend is the most beautiful girl in the world?" Drew asked.
May's blush deepened. She moved her gaze down to the ground. "A-are...you really back?"
"What do you think?" Drew said as he lifted May's head up with his index finger and thumb.
May's eyes started getting watery with happiness. She lunged herself at Drew and wrapped her arms around his neck, embracing him tightly.
"Welcome back." May said.
Drew wrapped his arms around her back, returning the hug. "I'm so sorry again for all the pain I caused you." He whispered in her ear.
"I'm just glad you're back to normal." Some tears escaped May's eyes when she thought about their huge argument from earlier.
Drew heard sniffing and he pulled away from May. "May, are those sad tears or happy tears?"
"...both." May answered, wiping her eyes. "I was just thinking back to our argument earlier today."
Drew frowned when he was reminded of that argument. He took May's hands off of her face and moved her face to look at him. She stared into his eyes.
"I know I hurt you May…" Drew said. "And I just wish there was something I could do to make it up to you, but...there isn't. Nothing could make up for how hurt I made you feel." He said as he wiped her remaining tears with his thumb.
"I know how you can make it up to me." May said.
"You do? How?"
"The magic carpet picnic date that you promised." May answered. "This time, you'll show up, right?"
"So...does that mean that you're not breaking up with me?"
May smiled and caressed Drew's hair. "How could I ever break up with such a pretty face?"
"Thanks."
May decided at that moment to mess with his hair. She ruffled Drew's hair with her hand.
"Hey. Stop. You're messing up my hair." Drew said as he backed away and started smoothening his hair.
May giggled. "Still cute though." She said as she tapped Drew on the nose.
Drew stopped fixing his hair and he smiled at May. He reached in his pocket and took out the necklace. He walked behind May and put it on her. "I guess I'll see you later?"
May turned around. "Do you promise that you'll show up this time?" May asked.
"Yes. I promise." Drew said.
"Then I'll see you later." May said happily. She turned around, ran to the edge of the field, and looked back at Drew. "Don't forget the picnic!" With that said, she ran off to the castle.
Drew exhaled. "I'm lucky to have May in my life." He muttered. "She means the whole world to me. But…" his smile faded. "Gabriella. Did she somehow put a spell on me? A magical jewel must be behind this."
