A/N: What a few months between friends right? Devie piece, because he's my favourite knight in shining armour.

Enjoy!

Always thought I was hard to love 'til you made it seem so easy.

Doug hovered near the bedroom door, listening to Evie's smooth voice singing along to her music.

Her voice was fairly quiet, unlike her usual singing and he peeped in the door. She was stretched out on their bed, long fingers tapping on the book in front of her but her eyes staring at the wall away from him, unfocused.

The stretch marks all around my thighs

Kiss 'em 'til I change my mind

About everything else

Her hands moved to the hem of her skirt, stroking the fabric above her thighs as the song moved on.

He didn't move, just quietly watching her with a smile on his face. Apparently it was on repeat and he couldn't help but love Evie even more. Her eyes closed as she continued to sing.

You really, really know me

The future and the old me

"Oh the old meeeee." She broke off from the song, opened her eyes again, took the pen out of the bun in her hair and started writing again. The biro was soon pushed back up into her hair, and a pencil was extracted from the mass of her hair. Sketches flowed from the pencil, biro detailing colours or unchangeable details. It would be another dress, but Doug wanted to see this one, so he knocked on the open door. She whipped round to see him, a smile spreading across her face but she closed the pages of her book and crossed the room to wrap her arms around him neck.

"Hi." He murmured.

"Hey." She kissed him softly.

"Whatcha doing."

"Not a lot to be honest." She shrugged.

"Are we on a Camilla Cabello hype?" He nodded to the speakers and she grinned again.

"A little bit, whatcha doing."

"Not a lot to be honest, wanna make tacos?"

"Yes please! Let me finish up this design and I'll be right down?" Evie beamed.

"Will you show me this design? You've been keeping the secret recently and I miss seeing what we're going to make this weekend."

"I have, I'll admit but there's a good reason." She hummed and Doug quirked one eyebrow, she matched his expression.

"Fine, I'll wait." He smiled and untangled himself from her arms.

"You want beef or chicken tacos?"

"You decide, you know my own stomach better than I do."

You really, really love me

You know me and you love me (uh, huh)

And it's the kind of thing I always hoped I'd find

It was as he disappeared down their stairs that Evie leant against the doorframe and murmured the words of the song still on repeat.

"Always thought I was hard to love 'til you made it seem so easy." She hummed to the rest of the words as she crossed back to collect her notebook, and the page fell open to her latest design. It was her fifth wedding dress, and rather than Mal's or Uma's or Lonnie's, it was hers. It was her hope and as she fiddled with the engagement ring, the two diamonds flanked the central-set ruby, she smiled.

She caught sight of herself in the mirror and she couldn't help but smile. She was engaged to a beautiful man, who kissed every flaw she could find, with her mother's voice haunting her head when she found a freckle or a wrinkle. A man who picked her up when her nerves took her down, who refused to let her see herself as anything but amazing, a man who fought any critic Evie didn't and he was her prince.

"You really really love, and truly that shocks me." She whispered, turning off the music and smelling delicious scents from the kitchen, she followed her nose and heart.
