After seeing May with Robin, Daisy wonders if May and Coulson ever wanted kids, season 5

Daisy watched May with Robin and couldn't help but be reminded of just how amazing of a mother May really was. May was good at everything she tried (well, besides cooking), but when it came to being a mother, she wasn't only good at it, she looked like she was in her element, it came naturally to her. Daisy had wondered before if May and Coulson ever wanted kids. Little things they did just screamed "parents" to her, but she was never sure if that was something they had wanted. In this moment, she wondered that now more than ever.

She noticed how Coulson watched May interact with the older woman. God, she thought, he is just so in love. He wore a soft smile, but his eyes didn't match. She tried to read the man's expression. Was it fear, or longing for what could've been?

"She's a natural." He commented and turned to look at his pseudo-daughter, "She always has been."

Coulson studied the girl sitting beside him. It seemed that they had grown so close in such a short amount of time, so he could read her expressions fairly easily. He knew she had a question on her mind, so he nudged her with his shoulder.

"I know you want to ask something, so come on, out with it." He teased slightly. Daisy hesitated before speaking.

"Did you guys ever want kids? Like, do you ever regret not having a normal family life?" She wondered aloud, turning to look at him again. He paused, thinking about what to say before answering.

"May wanted kids with Andrew, but after Bahrain she didn't think she could do it. When we were at the academy, she used to tease me by saying we would have the cutest kids." He chuckled, "There was always a part of her that was meant to be a mother. The way she took you and Fitz-Simmons under her wing on the Bus, and now with Robin."

Daisy nodded and couldn't help but adore how in love he was with May, even if he didn't admit it out loud, he definitely showed it.

"And you?" She asked, turning in her seat to face him.

"When I first joined Shield, I had always thought I'd have time to settle down and start a family. Then I met this cellist and I would picture myself with a little girl actually. I had always wanted a daughter to protect and watch grow up, to take to daddy-daughter dances and help with science projects. Then I died and I was under the impression that having a family and a little girl was just not in the cards."

By this point Daisy had stopped looking at him and instead stared at the floor. He knew exactly what she was thinking and smiled sadly, but continued talking.

"Then, Fury gave me a plane and two young scientists and a young hacktivist turned my world upside down. I got everything I needed."

Daisy looked up, slightly surprised. She had been fighting back tears at the thought that he would rather have a normal life.

"Daisy, I thought I could never have a family, but I was wrong. Sure, it's a little unconventional, but I wouldn't change this for the world."

"Really?" Daisy said with her eyebrow raised, "You'd rather be here, in space fighting blue aliens, than sitting on the porch of a house in the countryside? You'd rather be here with the Destroyer of World than-"

"Yes." He interrupted, "Daisy, sometimes… sometimes it's hard for me to really say what I feel."

"No, really?" She joked and they both chuckled.

"But, I need you to know how much you mean to me. I may not have raised you, but over the past few years, I've seen you grow exponentially and I'm proud of that. You're the daughter I never had."

She smiled up at him, genuinely touched by his words.

"Thanks...Dad." She replied, only slightly joking.

Later that night, May and Daisy sat in the cockpit watching the constellations. Daisy contemplated asking May the same question she'd asked Phil hours ago. Without even turning to look at her, May began to speak, startling Daisy slightly.

"Yes, I did want kids, but no I don't regret staying in Shield." Daisy stared at her, bewildered.

"Phil talked to me earlier and informed me of the conversation you two had. I figured you wanted to ask me directly."

"Right, I always forget you have mind reading powers." Daisy joked and May just rolled her eyes. The two sat in comfortable silence for a while.

"Phil used to joke about us having the cutest kids, just to get a rise out of me." Daisy laughed, recalling Coulson saying the exact same thing about May.

"He used to daydream about having a daughter, you know? We were on a mission in, was it Chile? We were on a stakeout for quite awhile. Anyway, he'd said that after he was done with Shield, he'd settle down and have a family. He wanted daughter to take to school, teach her to drive, and just travel the world with his family. At some point his fantasies mixed with mine, I suppose. I would picture a little girl, the perfect mix of him and I, running around, causing trouble." May laughed a little, "Guess we didn't get far off from that."

She said and looked directly at Daisy who blushed a little.

"Wha- I don't cause trouble…" Daisy mumbled as she relaxed. May just chuckled, but didn't say anything else. The two of them sat in their usual comfortable silence, just enjoying each other's presence. Daisy was honored that both May and Coulson thought of her as their own. The thought helped calm her nerves and she closed her eyes. Sitting here, just her and May, reminded her of simpler times. She was half asleep when she said, "Goodnight Mama" barely loud enough for May to hear. For the first time in months, Daisy fell asleep feeling safe. She had her parents and they had her, and right now that was enough.
