Tomobiki High School, the third Monday of May in 2012, an hour after lunch...

"Konnichi wa, Negako-san. Please, can I have some words about this incident?"

Earth's first true artificial intelligence perked on hearing that eager question from the adopted native of Maizuru (where her namesake volcano was located) and Nagasaki (where she was constructed) now approaching her as she stood calmly by the main gate of the school. Like other shipgirls now assigned to keep watch over Tomobiki, the reborn THG Aoba — who had actually been virtually rebuilt and Gifted one quiet evening a week before with the help of warding experts of the Chūgoku Magical Association due to her being scrapped after World War Two — was dressed in a mottled blue-grey Maritime Self-Defence Force utility uniform, her rank of captain on her slip-ons and a brassard over her left upper arm displaying the kanji 報道 over the Latin script PRESS.

"Ah, Ayako, greetings," Moroboshi Negako called out as Fujimoto Ayako stopped beside her, holding out her new cell phone — it was actually a Yizibajohei personal administrative assistant device modified to look like an iPhone — to record the ninjutsu grandmaster's words. "A mercenary of the late planet Thanatos under the employ of the Ipraedies Empire came here in hopes of securing Redet Lum and force her to participate in the Imperial Circus as was arranged three years ago by Aruka Ran. Since the boys here took umbrage at the fact that Lum potentially faced death were she removed from Earth, they challenged said mercenary. They were saved by Sei's intervention and the use of the Heart-Blast Touch attack to kill the mercenary. Sei just removed his corpse to place it aboard his ship now in orbit, then said ship will be disposed of in the Sun."

The pony-tailed elder teenager (in looks) nodded before she gazed on the pile of moaning male students nearby, they being tended to by Sakurambō Sakura and Chikamatsu Fusae. "What happened to them?"

"They attacked me believing I was Ataru."

Ayako's blue eyes went wide as she gave the other woman a careful look-over. "You sure don't look like a boy, Negako-san," the would-be reporter — so inspired by one of her crew, the founder of modern Japanese science fiction Sano Shōichi AKA Unno Jūzō — then caustically commented. "Were you hurt?"

"No."

"Darling...?"

Negako and Ayako looked over to see a still-dazed warlord's daughter from Onishuto standing nearby, she gazing with a mixture of hope and confusion at the oddly-dressed person who seemed so much like her "husband". Floating close to Redet Lum's head was her cousin, shaking his head at such an obvious mistake. "Sorry about that, Negako-onēchan! Lum-chan's still kinda out of it right now," Redet Ten warned.

"I can perceive that, Jariten..."

"YATTA! U-CHAN'S HERE! PUPPUKUPU! AH! NEGAKO-CHAN, PYON!"

Blinking with clear surprise, Negako turned...

...before she was tackled by a runaway mass topped with ankle-length rosy pink-red hair, the newcomer dressed in the same heavy-fabric canvas blouse and pants prepared for shipgirls like them who spent some time in a certain magically-hidden cove in northeast Siberia. "It is good to see you again, Utako," the ninjutsu grandmaster stated as she reached up to tenderly rub the head of the newcomer before she gazed on the two other girls now calmly standing beyond the main gate. "And Yayoi and Nozomi as well. Are there any sign of your other sisters, girls?" she then asked while allowing the just-returned Kisaragi Utako to hold her close.

As Ten automatically gushed on seeing such pretty girls — whom he knew were shipgirls as well, most likely destroyers; fortunately, the Fidelius charm placed on him with the help of Hirosaki Chikage would block him from revealing THAT startling truth about these girls, especially to anyone like his own cousin or her peers — the girl with the lilac-shaded short hair with long sidelocks and her bespectacled sister with waist-length caramel hair saluted the personal assassin of the Heavenly Sovereign. "We'll have to spend time looking for them, Negako-san," the former politely stated in a voice that seemed almost as toneless as Negako's herself. "However, given the many threats to Shirei-kan, we will base ourselves with him to ensure he remains unharmed."

"The others briefed us on the whole situation, Negako-san," the other girl said in a rather tired voice.

"You will need proper uniforms, of course," Negako noted as she gazed down on the gamájun-made clothes. "We will speak to Hajime about that when Class 1-4 has their afternoon study hall. In the meantime, remain on site to ensure security. It would be wise to ensure that if the Ipraedies are determined to kidnap Lum and her peers, a sufficient deterrence force is ready to intercept. You will provide it under Ayako's command."

Pulling away from the ninjutsu grandmaster, the reborn THG Uzuki of the Mutsuki-class fleet destroyers — the last "old school" class of ships built at the end of the Great War before the big design leap was made with the Fubuki-class — flashed two thumbs up, her chestnut eyes flashing as the air around her hands fizzled. "Ah, Negako-chan's being silly, pyon! Some stupid alien tries to be stupid near U-chan, U-chan'll do THIS...!

"U-CHAN STUPID YŌKAI SMACK, PYON!"

KK-KRACK!

The whole school grounds violently shook as a lightning bolt larger than anything people could imagine stabbed down from the sky to totally atomize the twisted willow tree at the northwest edge of the grounds. While shouts of shock and disbelief echoed from the nearby schoolhouse, all Ten could do is shake his head before gazing on his cousin. "You better give up on Ataru now, Lum-chan," the firefighter's son from Onishuto warned.

No response came from Moroboshi Ataru's "wife"...

The End of the Circus: A Tale of the Yizibajohei
Aoba News Omake: The Blessings of the Months
by Fred Herriot

The Principal's office, an hour later...

"You are being unreasonable, Negako-san!"

"Provide proof that Ataru wrote the entrance exam for Tomobiki High, then."

Hearing the toneless reply from the woman officially known within the Imperial Household Agency as the Lady Chamberlain of the Fukiage Ōmiya Palace, the Principal shuddered as he tried to find something to move this being to make her relent when it came to her charge. A quick glance towards the still-dazed Redet Lum then firmed the man's spine; if Moroboshi Ataru was NOT brought back as a student, the riot that would follow would wreck the school. "His friends miss him, Negako-san! To take him away on such flimsy excuses..."

"Ataru has only two friends within his former class, Tomohisa," Moroboshi Negako cut him off, causing the Principal to jerk. "Tsuruya Rumiko and Inu Chigaiko. The remainder of said class are people he views as either traitors to humanity, traitors to humanity by association, a sexless person that is neither boy nor girl and two effective monsters. Respectively, that translates as follows: The male members of the class; the female members of the class save Lum, Shinobu and Ryūnosuke; Ryūnosuke herself; then Lum and Shinobu. Given the clear terrorist threat soon to confront this school, Ataru wishes to not be anywhere close to here."

Silence.

More silence.

Still more silence.

Then...

"TERRORISTS?!"

That was all the girls of Class 2-4 save the aforementioned Tsuruya Rumiko and Inu Chigaiko...not to mention the still-insensate Lum. "That is correct," Negako stated as the reborn THG Yayoi standing behind her gazed neutrally on them, making said girls quake; once she was salvaged and Gifted from near Papua New Guinea, Kisaragi Yayoi didn't have to get used to a new name as her sisters had. "While you were indisposed in Onishuto, Ataru took the time to answer a call from the International Criminal Court in the Hague concerning the incident provoked by Satoshi and his peers shortly after the Tag Race. He was subjected to a full memory scan by both metahuman telepaths and magical masters of Legilimency. Once that was done, the judges in the case UNANIMOUSLY declared him INNOCENT of any potential charges of aiding and abetting worldwide ECOLOGICAL TERRORISM! Said charges now facing Satoshi, Akira, Kōsuke and Hiroyuki."

Hearing that dire statement, the slowly-recovering members of Lum's Stormtroopers awked in horror. "W-w-wait!" Megane sputtered. "What about Shinobu?! What about Sedoyama-kun?! They were there, too!"

"Keizō is dead, as are all the members of his 'torture studies group'..."

"WHAT?!" everyone else save Lum, her cousin and those touched by Yiziba shrilled as one.

"The person who rescued Ataru from being forced into a false marriage with Lum..."

"IT WASN'T FALSE!"

As everyone spun around to see Lum now fully alert and glaring wrathfully at the woman who said such a terrible thing, a pair of ice-cold blue eyes focused directly on her, making the warlord's daughter stop.

Silence.

More silence.

Still more silence.

Then...

"Lum-san, they spent TWO WEEKS rebuilding the entire school because of YOUR lack of self-control when it comes to your bio-electrical powers," the adopted native of the Uraga neighbourhood in Yokosuka coolly declared as the others in the room standing took a hesitant step away from her. "Sit down."

In a flash, Lum was in the seat she had been occupying, looking VERY meek. As her peers and the Principal all awked on seeing how quickly the warlord's daughter had submitted to the reborn destroyer, Yayoi's arm was raised by a grinning Utako. "WINNER AND STILL UNIVERSAL CHAMPION, PYON! KISARAGI YAYOI-CHAN!" the woman now known on Yiziba as the Rainy Scrapper of Spring, Nyuodake ("Uzuki"), proudly declared.

A smile crossed Negako's face before she sipped the tea that had been prepared for her by Kotatsuneko. The cat-ghost was now seated by his kotatsu, he beside the dozing Kisaragi Nozomi, the reborn THG Mochizuki which had been also sunk near New Guinea in an air attack as her older sister had. "As for Shinobu, Satoshi, she is considered a hostile witness whose testimony will be called immediately into question," Negako added.

That caused Ataru's former girlfriend to awk. "Why?!"

"Because of your immediately abandoning Ataru the day he won the Tag Race against Lum," the ninjutsu grandmaster reported, that making Miyake Shinobu jerk as her eyes went wide at that spoken accusation from her old boyfriend's current guardian. "You clearly proved by that act that you never once truly cared for Ataru, thus you have earned his ire; that is why he now sees you as much of a monster as he does Lum." Ignoring the squawks from both girls at that declaration, Ataru's present legal guardian and quasi-adopted elder sister added, "Thus, should something occur to either of you in the future, he will do NOTHING to assist either of you."

Staring at this woman who seemed to have TOTAL legal power over the man they deeply cared for, both the Roman Catholic teen descent of the Kakure of Kyūshū and the warlord's daughter from the fourth world of Oniboshi blinked before they literally collapsed on themselves, their eyes spiralling. While the others gaped at the sight of their two most powerful peers being so easily hurt this way, the eleventh of the Mutsuki-class destroyers who had come here today looked up as she pulled a thick envelope out of her pants pocket. "Oh, by the way, Shirei-kan wanted you two idiots to have these back," Kisaragi Nozomi declared before flipping the unsealed envelope over to dump a considerable pile of ripped photographs on the kotatsu.

Shinobu screamed in disbelief as Lum staggered over to look...

...then both dropped to their knees in wide-eyed, teary agony on seeing that said pictures contained photos of both of THEM, all deliberately ripped apart and crushed with obvious clear hatred and contempt for the subjects of said photographs. Dropping the envelope on the kotatsu beside said pile, the woman called the Wise Wish Bringer, Nuodake ("Mochizuki"), then rested her chin on the warm space heater.

"Um, what did Shirei-kan say when he destroyed those pictures, Mocchi?" Fujimoto Ayako asked.

As the others were quick to see the held-up iPhone/PAA in her hand, the eleventh of her class who was also built at the Uraga Dock Company in the 1920s smirked. "They were STRANGERS to him, Ayako-san."

The former rivals for Ataru's hand jolted before they passed out of the floor!

"Cool! We can go home finally!"

Eyes then locked on the gushing Ten now floating near Yayoi...

Class 2-4, afternoon study hall...

"THIS IS A TRAGEDY!"

Save for two people in the classroom, all those who were ONCE peers of Moroboshi Ataru looked as if the world had suddenly come to an end without warning. While both Redet Lum and Miyake Shinobu were sobbing quietly at their desks, others exchanged wide-eyed looks of disbelief, stunned that something so vicious had been unleashed by their former class representative. While some of the boys in the room seethed while thinking of what they might do should Ataru have the ill-luck to cross their paths, others shuddered in horror as what Moroboshi Negako revealed not an hour before in the Principal's office. The girls themselves simply didn't know WHAT to do in the face of all this; should they worry about what Lum would do now that she was "free" of Ataru — thus able to pursue Mendō Shūtarō — or stand together with the suffering Shinobu to help her heal.

"Why's it a tragedy?" Inu Chigaiko asked from her place close to the windows. "Given how quick Redet shifted around when Ataru-kun made the mistake of saying 'I will marry her' when he tagged the dork's horns — when he was clearly talking about Miss Back-stabber Miyake there — he's got every damn right in the Universe to not trust her one bit." Ignoring Shinobu's hurt squawk at being called that, the basketball team forward sipped from a can of ice coffee before turning back to her chemistry notes. "Not to mention how Redet treated him like her personal SLAVE right after that ATOP Miyake using him as her personal PUNCHING BAG at times!"

"Don't you have any compassion, Yon-san?!" Marubeya Momoe shrieked as she tried to comfort her friend.

"Who?"

"Who's 'Yon-san', pyon?"

Everyone shrieked before spinning around. "Utako-san!" Shūtarō exclaimed.

The Rainy Scrapper of Spring walked over to stand close to the recently-Gifted Silent Hunter of the Fabulous Quartet. "U-chan doesn't see any Yon-san here, pyon," the adopted native of Uraga stated as she looked around in an exaggerated way. "U-chan only sees Shirei-kan's friend Chigaiko-chan, pyon."

"They're just showing how STUPID they all are, U-chan," Chigaiko stated, winking.

As the other girls squawked — save for Rumiko and all the Shōzoki AIs affiliated to the school who were NOT mentally linked to a certain master sentience back on their homeworld dozens of light years away, all who were affiliated with Tomobiki High were affected by a curse that made them forget Chigaiko's very NAME, one that appeared after Hallowe'en the previous fall — Utako snorted. "Shirei-kan knows that, pyon!"

"HEY!" many of the girls shrieked.

"Matter of fact, Shirei-kan told U-chan that he can't believe how STUPID he was to think ANY GIRL in this class — Chigaiko-chan and Rumiko-chan excepted — was pretty, pyon!" Utako added, making the girls all recoil. "When he wiped out all the pictures his dork parents had of him in their photo albums since they've always said they never wanted him, he also burned those stupid black books he made about all of you, pyon!"

"Why...?" Gekasawa Kumiko hissed.

"Because when Shirei-kan was rescued from that false marriage..."

"IT WASN'T FALSE...urk!"

People looked...

...before wincing on seeing Utako's sister Yayoi now standing at the head of the row of seats where Lum was, the lilac-haired destroyer gazing upon the warlord's daughter with that very cold, neutral look. "Stop lying to yourself, Lum-san. To say anything of lying to everyone else," the woman known now as the Eternal Purifier, Nir'buo ("Yayoi"), on the World of the Forge calmly stated. "Shirei-kan only tagged your horns ONCE. That was during a Tag Race. Which, under your planet's customs and traditions — as was FULLY explained to Negako-san by Her Excellency, the Chancellor of the Outmarches of the Imperial Dominion of Noukiios — means that there was no MARRIAGE TAG. What Shirei-kan said in the heat of the moment DOES NOT MATTER."

"TAG LUM-SAN'S HORNS...!"

The girls shrieked as all the boys around Lum — including Shūtarō — lunged...

...before the boys all screamed in agony as they grabbed their privates, dropping to their knees.

Silence.

More silence.

Still more silence.

Then...

"Oh, Yayoi-chan, that was nasty, pyon!"

The girls blinked before they looked over. "Um...what did she do?" Fujinami Ryūnosuke asked.

"I simply used my empathic healing to COMPLETELY BLOCK all forms of sexual arousal from them," Yayoi answered before she perked on sensing someone approach from the main stairwell behind the front wall of the class. While those boys who weren't affected winced in sympathy at such a cruel act, she added, "And I must confess, from what I just sensed of these boys, Shirei-kan is truly a MAN in comparison!"

As the affected boys squawked in wounded outrage from her words, Utako, Chigaiko and Rumiko shrieked with laughter before footfalls heralded the arrival of the eleventh of the Mutsuki-class reborn. "Hey, guys!"

Everyone looked before eyes went wide in awe. "Oh, Mocchi, you look great, pyon!" Utako gushed on seeing the Wise Wish Bringer now in a simple black sweatshirt with the Imperial chrysanthemum over her heart, that over her hull number 154 in white; the whole was over matching black slacks that showed off her legs beautifully. As many of the girls in the room gasped on seeing the bookish-looking teen so well-dressed, the Rainy Scrapper gave her a thumbs up while Yayoi nodded, a slight smile twitching her lips. "Shirei-kan was right about Hajime-kun, pyon!" She then skipped to the door. "U-chan's turn now, pyon!" she called out, waving.

"Hai, hai, U-chan, go have fun," Kisaragi Nozomi said as she waved the other shipgirl off before she walked over to sit down at her spiritual commander's empty desk, moving to relax her head in her arms.

People gazed on her, then Mifune Hideyuki — who hadn't been affected by the Eternal Purifier's powers — walked over to stand beside the lilac-haired healing empath. "Um, Yayoi-san, you're an empath and Utako-san's a meteorkinetic," the quite handsome man who was a secondary affiliate to the Stormtroopers noted, earning him relieved nods from his peers. "What's Nozomi-san's power?" he then asked.

"Nozomi is both a photokinetic and a psychokinetic," Yayoi answered.

Everyone blinked as Lum turned ash-grey, she shying from the girl in her "husband's" seat. As the boys moved to shield their favourite peer, Ryūnosuke then blinked. "Is that why she seems to want to sleep so much?"

"Hai, her power consumption is high," the third of the Mutsuki-class announced. "Thus, if Lum-san angers Nozomi to see her transformed into a poodle, Lum-san would have to wait a DAY to be transformed back."

Ignoring the awk from the warlord's daughter at THAT threat, Nozomi absently waived her hand in clear dismissal. "Feh! I wouldn't have to do that much, Yayoi," she muttered.

Her sister blinked. "What would you do?"

"I'd take away her flight and lightning powers, making her a CRIPPLE among her own people."

KK-KLONK!

Everyone turned to see a dazed Lum flat on her back on the floor! As many of the boys moved to comfort her, some of the girls in the room got thoughtful looks on their faces...

The Tomobiki Ginza, an hour before suppertime...

"Eh?! LET Ataru-kun stay with these girls?!"

"Hai," Obinata Hiromi declared as she pointed up while people made their way in and out of the town's main shopping district close to downtown about four blocks from Tomobiki High School. "And here's why: You guys notice how badly Lum seems to be reacting to the presence of all these metahumans, didn't you?"

The other girls from Class 2-4 considered that comment from the fourth-most popular girl of the previous year's Class 1-4 before nods twitched their heads. "Yeah, it was pretty freaky to see at times," Marubeya Momoe noted as they moved to queue up near a yatai serving crêpes across the main lane from Esmerelda's Ladies Boutique. "Ten-chan says these girls don't talk like those metahumans from that planet the Oni are mortally terrified of do, so there's no excuse for Lum to try to call down her own people to drive them away."

"Yeah. What's to stop Ataru-kun or Negako-sensei from ordering them killed and having their ships dumped in the sun like Sei-san did this morning with that mercenary?" Yamagata Masako added.

"My point!" the girl with the brown hair in a headband affirmed with a nod. "Ataru-kun WON the Tag Race last fall, so the onus on bad behaviour falls automatically on Lum's people in case someone in Onishuto gets stupid. Hideyuki-kun found out these girls can dead-lift BILLIONS of tonnes, are as invulnerable as Superman himself, plus can fly and move fast, even up in SPACE! How much does that battleship Lum's father commands weigh?"

"About ten million tonnes at most, I'd think," Arakida Yui mused.

Of course, none of her organic peers remembered that the now-gatherer gynoid had NOT been on planet Uru the previous month. "So we've got a deterrence," Hiromi declared with an eager nod. "Sooner or later, Lum's finally going to realize that Ataru-kun's pretty much dumped her and go back home."

"What's to stop Lum from chasing Mendō-san instead...?" Gekasawa Kumiko demanded.

"No, Master, I am not angry."

The girls perked before they looked over...

...then they gaped on seeing the reborn third of the Mutsuki-class destroyers being handed a very LARGE crêpe by the vendor of the yatai, confused by his apologetic behaviour. As he scrambled back to serve the others in the queue, Kisaragi Yayoi shrugged before nibbling on the sweet snack, she heading towards Esmerelda's...

KK-KRUNCH!

The girls from Class 2-4 winced. "Oh, no...!"

"ATARU! DIE!"

Hearing the booming voice of a certain frontier pilot from Uru based at the colony of Toshitto echo from nearby, that accompanied by the panicked screams of restaurant owners and patrons as everyone spun around to gaze towards Tampopo's Rāmen and Beefbowl Bar, other people moaned. An ominous bank of dust and debris soon heralded the arrival of a healed yet VERY angry ushitora, who was storming right for Esmerelda's...

With the Eternal Purifier standing right in the way!

KK-KRANG!

Everyone screamed out, ducking away...

"My crêpe...?"

Heads snapped over...

...then everyone from Tomobiki High who knew of her all froze with grey-faced horror on seeing the remnants of Yayoi's snack now on the street, having been knocked out of her hand when Seq Rei rammed right into her back. As people ignored the ushitora who had just been crushed into an accordion-shaped mess thanks to hitting a reborn 1,468 tonne destroyer made human — with maximum strength output of 3,163,575,232 tonnes in Earth gravity! — Yayoi's facial features didn't change even if her blue eyes flashed with something dark and ominous.

"I am angry."

Everyone then croaked as she spun upon the moaning Rei.

What happened next is best NOT described...

On the fourth floor of Esmerelda's, that moment...

"U-chan still wants to fry that creep for wrecking Yayoi's crêpe, pyon!"

Both of Yayoi's sisters who had been reborn over the last week and their spiritual commander watched the cosmic healing empath tear apart the screaming Seq Rei from an open window. As the staff working under Esmerelda Stevens hurried about to kit out the three Kisaragi sisters, Moroboshi Ataru patted the shoulder of the Rainy Scrapper of Spring. "Relax, U-chan! You need to learn our sense of propriety, remember?"

"She IS our sister, Ataru-kun," Kisaragi Nozomi reminded him.

"There is Aruka-san to think about also, Mocchi," the male-half of the Trickster of the Show reminded her.

As the Wise Wish Bringer hummed, wild cheers echoed through the Ginza...

WRITER'S NOTES

With a nod to the situations described in Mahō Sensei Negima, the regional Magical Associations serve as the true governing bodies over magicals living in Japan; despite what Western magicals think, there is no unified magical ministry in that nation. As indicated by their English name, they're divided according to the regions of the nation; from north to south: Hokkaidō, Tōhoku, Kantō, Chūbu, Kansai (AKA Kinki), Chūgoku, Shikoku and Kyūshū. Officially, they're referred to as Imperial Magical Commanderies (in Japanese, Teimajutsu-gun).

As show before, the Heart-Blast Touch (Shinzō Bakuhatsu Shoko, shortened to Shinbasho) is a pressure point attack that infuses anti-ki into the meridians controlling the heart, thus causing the organ to beat at very unhealthy speeds to the point that various blood vessels rupture, causing a painful death. Unlike the soulsword, this particular attack can be countered by using meridians on the back to block the infusion of anti-ki.

The creators of Kantai Collection were very inspired by the fact that Sano Shōichi AKA Unno Jūzō (1897-1949) did serve as a deckhand aboard THG Aoba in the early months of 1942; this inspired the shipgirl version of the character known in this series as Fujimoto Ayako to become a military events reporter.

Like with other shipgirls, Kisaragi Yayoi (THG Yayoi), Kisaragi Utako (THG Uzuki) and Kisaragi Nozomi (THG Mochizuki) were introduced properly in the main series. Naturally, their personalities and individual quirks — Yayoi's VERY stoic nature, Utako's verbal tic of "pyon" appearing in all her sentences and Nozomi's general laziness and hikikomori tendencies — are based on how they're depicted in Kantai Collection.

Endō Hajime was introduced in Part Fifteen of Book One. He is based on a character by the dōjinshi artist YK.

Sedoyama Keizō first appeared in the second Yatsura television story, "It's Raining Oil All Over Town"; his given name is my creation. He also appeared in the first movie of the series, Only You. Obinata Hiromi was first mentioned in the manga story "Even Though I Wait For You" (manga chapter #26); her family name is my invention. I base her on the unnamed girl wearing a headband that shows up in "The Bluebird of Happiness" (manga chapter #281) on the fourth page's third panel. As an FYI, the other girls depicted in that panel are Yamagata Masako (the girl with pigtails; she was also mentioned in "Even Though I Wait For You") and Arakida Yui (the short-haired girl); Masako's family name and Yui's whole name are my creation.

Miyake Shinobu's being of the Kakure ("hidden") Catholic sect was noted on in The Senior Year.
