Ruthlessness

It was, she thought, fitting. After everything that had happened, it only made sense that the crazy past year of her life was nowhere close to being complete. Alone in her room, she carefully touched the screen of her laptop, caressing the cheek of a brown eyed little girl. Her heart ached at just the sight of her and when Kagome drew her eyes to the man in the picture who haunted her dreams, her heart throbbed.

There was pain and guilt and anger and fear. She didn't want to meet him. He was going to hate her, with everything inside of him, with everything he was capable of. Every fiber of his being was going to be against her, would wish to kill her. In a very dark, small corner of her mind, a part of Kagome was tempted to let him. Everything would be over; no more fear or anger or guilt or pain. She would finally be at peace.

This piece of Kagome was a mere shard of who she was though and as she thought of the life growing within her, of the family that loved and surrounded her, she squashed that sliver of herself with a ruthlessness she hadn't been aware she still possessed. Shaking her head, she closed the laptop and set it to the side as she pushed herself out of her chair. Her mother's words came back to and Kagome was hard pressed to forget them.

"I am strong," she whispered as she glanced at the silent cell phone on the edge of her desk. "I am strong and smart and no matter what he does, I will not give up." Settling her hand gently against her still flat belly, Kagome looked at herself in the mirror across the room. "The only way he is going to make me into that girl that cries at the drop of a hat…." She shook her head and changed her mind. "I refuse to let him make me that girl again."
