Chapter 40
Jacob grunted as he did one more rep on the bench press before taking a deep breath and sitting up. It had been 2 weeks since the newborn battle and all Jacob wanted was to be as strong as he once was, maybe even stronger. He slowly stood up and stretched out his arms before suddenly stilling when he heard a rushed movement behind him. He knew exactly who it was so he paid no attention to it. Instead, he walked over to his weight set and started doing arm curls.
He smirked when he heard someone draw a sharp breath leading him to turn around. Standing behind the door was Anabelle, who was watching him shyly. "Hi." She said, revealing the tray of sandwiches she was holding. "I thought you might be hungry." She smiled while walking towards him and setting down the tray on a wooden table.
"I'm always hungry," Jacob replied, grabbing onto her wrist and pulling her onto his body. She squealed when he pulled her in between his legs and stared up at her with so much love she thought she would combust.
"I love you." She whispered, running her fingers through his hair. "And I'm really happy that I'm your imprint." She leaned in to give him a sweet kiss but Jacob was having none of it. He instead pulled her into his lap and deepened the kiss. Anabelle gladly let him massage his tongue with hers making her gasp quietly. She pulled away slowly before asking, "I thought you were hungry," before nodding her head to the tray of sandwiches. "Are you going to not eat what took me a whole three minutes to make?"
Jacob pouted before standing and placing her down and grabbing the sandwiches before taking a big bite. "These are delicious. Thank you."
"You're welcome." She replied while looking around the garage. "Why do you have the bench press out? I thought you told me you didn't need it because of all the wolf muscle you gained."
"I just want to gain as much as I can. I know you know I look a little leaner, honey." Anabelle didn't say anything. Over the past 2 weeks, all Jacob had done was physical therapy. It was good that he healed quicker than most and he was able to gain full mobility of his right side with no difficulty. But she had seen that he looked thinner than usual. But, he was still larger than the average human nonetheless.
"You know you don't have to, right? You are perfect just the way you are." She gave him a loving look making Jacob smile and hug her tightly.
"Thank you." He said before pulling her towards the door. "Now come on, don't you have a date to get to?"
Anabelle rolled her eyes and scoffed. "More like a study date with Mason because he's having trouble with his work."
"Sure." Jacob drawled. "Let's go with that."
Anabelle grabbed her backpack from the backseat before climbing out of the car with Jacob trailing behind her. They then walked towards the parlor door and entered the parlor with Anabelle seeing Mason at the counter. "Hey, Mase. Are you ready to dive into the wonderful world of biology?"
Mason chuckled before giving her a tight hug, not bothering to acknowledge Jacob's presence and pulling her to a seat next to him. "I already ordered your usual."
"Chocolate with syrup topped with chocolate chips and brownie bites?" Jacob questioned him before pulling Anabelle into his lap and sitting down in a seat near Mason.
"Yeah." Mason replied, looking agitated. Anabelle looked between the two boys noticing a sort of tension making her say, "So, shall we start?"
Anabelle and Mason studied for 2 hours, going over biology, AP human geography before ending with geometry. Those 2 hours were filled with Anabelle studying like her life depended on it, Mason taking every chance he had to talk to Anabelle, leaving Jacob to glare at the boy every time he touched her hand or shoulder to get her attention.
Once their study date was over, Anabelle was putting away her things when Mason asked, "B, can I talk to you? In private." Jacob scoffed quietly before taking a sip of his soda.
"Sure, yeah." She replied, zipping up her backpack. She gave Jacob a grateful smile when he grabbed her things and headed to the door.
"I'll turn the car on and wait for you."
Once he was gone, Mason stepped closer towards Anabelle before grabbing her hand, startling her. "What's wrong Mase?"
"B, I need to tell you something very important. And you might not feel the same once I do so I need to tell you now." Anabelle saw the nervous and almost scared expression on his face causing her to rub her hands soothing with his.
"Mase, you're my best friend, hell my only friend from school who I didn't meet by means of my brother." She told him. "You can tell me anything."
"Ok, here goes." He mumbled under his breath before looking at Anabelle in the eye and saying, "I like you, B. I have for a while now and I need to tell you. Ever since we met I've always known I felt some type of way about you. And I knew you liked me too, even before you admitted it." Anabelle was about to speak but Mason silenced her.
"And I know you have a boyfriend, I know that but, I think you would agree y'all starting dating very fast." Anabelle took a deep breath before speaking.
"Look Mase. I've told you before, it wasn't that fast. Not for me. And about me liking you. It was a little crush that I got over. You were gone for a year and I realized I only liked you as a friend. That's all I see you as." She explained gently.
"But don't you think it's weird that you're dating one of your brother's friends?" He asked. "I can't help but think he's pressuring you into something."
Anabelle looked up at him in disgust while snatching her hands away from his. "He is not pressuring me to do anything. Not that it's any of your business. What I do with my boyfriend is only for me to know. Now I'm leaving before you say anything else that stupid." Fear rose in Mason's eyes before he grabbed Anabelle's arm and pulled her back.
"Wait! I'm sorry, that came out wrong. I just needed you to know that I really really love you B. I'm in love with you. And I'm sorry for not telling you earlier but that's how I feel." Anabelle sighed, letting Mason move closer to where their faces were inches apart. "Can I kiss you?" He whispered.
"I don't know Mase." She said turning her head towards the door where Jacob was probably standing.
"Just once. Please. And then you don't have to talk to me ever again, let alone be my friend." Anabelle looked back at him and saw the pleading look on his face that she couldn't deny. She did have a crush on Mason but once Jacob entered into her life, he was the only one. She was about to tell him no when a pair of lips stopped her, throwing her off guard. She froze in shock before he pulled away. She looked at him in horror before taking a step back.
She turned to leave but stood still when she saw Jacob looking at her in anger. "J." She whispered, but he was already out the door making her hurry to follow him. She wretched the door open to see Jacob walking to the Rabbit. "J, please let me explain." She said, walking hesitantly over to him.
"Get in the car." He told her, making her wince at the sharp tone of his voice.
"Not until you let me explain." She insisted.
"What's there to explain!? You kissed another guy, Belle! You didn't slap him across the face or push him away!" Jacob yelled, grabbing her arm roughly causing her to squeak out in pain. "Why did you even let him kiss you in the first place?!" She whimpered at the force on her arm causing him to let go in fear that he had hurt her.
She looked down to see where Jacob had his hands and gasped at the red marks on her biceps. "Belle, I didn't." Jacob tried before trying to touch her again. Anabelle's eyes widened before stepping back in caution.
Anabelle took a steadying breath before speaking. "When you left Mason said he wanted to tell me something important. He ended up explaining that he had feelings for me to which I responded that I didn't have feelings for him anymore. Because I am with you. He said that he understood but thought it was weird because you're one of Paul's friends and we started dating super fast." She explained.
"I got upset because it isn't his business what we do and how fast we do it. He apologized before telling me again that he had feelings for me. When I didn't respond, he asked if he could kiss me." Jacob growled before she continued.
"He didn't give me enough time to respond and kissed me. I didn't want it to happen, I'm telling the truth here, J."
Jacob shook his head. "You don't get it."
"Get what?"
"He was only doing that to get a reaction out of me. Why else would he admit his feelings for you when I'm not 10 feet away? God you're so gullible." Jacob laughed.
"I'm sorry, when did this turn into something about you? Mason has no animosity towards you. He's happy that I'm happy."
"You're joking right?" Jacob chuckled darkly.
"Does it look like I am Jacob? Why are you being such an asshole?" There were now tears streaming down Anabelle's face. "I never meant to hurt you, ok? I'm sorry."
"You may be sorry but he's not. The first day he saw me after your birthday, I knew he didn't like me."
"Of course he had that feeling because you were so possessive and territorial. The minute I hugged him, you were right there. And I'm not saying that it was unnecessary, I know the imprint must have made you like that but…" she sighed. "Look, I'm sorry I didn't pull away fast. It was because I reacted slowly. You know I would never do that to you. Just like I know you would never do that to me."Jacob bowed his head in shame making Anabelle look at him questioningly. "Right?"
"No." Jacob sighed before saying, "Look. Before the battle, on the mountain, I got in a fight with Bella. I found out she wanted to be a vampire and got mad because if she wants to be a vampire, there was no reason for us to protect her and patrol more if she isn't going to be human much longer."
"She got mad because she claimed she was going to tell me when you walked in and found out I imprinted on you. I hated her talking shit about you and told her the pain she was causing. I didn't like that she used her words to bring up hurtful memories for you. And well…." He trailed.
"She kissed me. And I didn't pull back. I was just so overcome with anger towards her and wasn't thinking." Anabelle listened, not saying anything for a few moments.
"You kissed her!?" She yelled. "After you yelled at me, making me feel horrible about myself for not slapping a friend who kissed me knowing damn well you kissed Bella? That was weeks ago Jacob. Were you not going to tell me?" She asked.
"I didn't see a reason to."
Anabelle looked at him in surprise. "You didn't see a reason to? I was at your beck and call these last few weeks, helping you with anything you needed and you didn't tell me? You were just going to not tell me that you cheated on me?" Jacob suddenly looked at her for the first time in the eye.
"Cheated on you? That's hardly cheating." Jacob replied.
"Do you hear yourself right now?" Anabelle asked him. She looked at him with disgust before scoffing. "You know what? I'm done with this."
"Hold on, hold on, wait. What is happening right now? What are you saying?" He asked. He held her face in his hands and wiped her tears before kissing her forehead.
"I think I need a break, J." She whispered. "This is getting to be too much."
Jacob stuttered, "But, we can… we can get through this. I acted like an asshole and I'm sorry, just please forgive me."
Anabelle shook her head and caressed his cheek. "That's not what I mean J. I think we need some space apart. Now that I'm thinking about it, we did move very fast in our relationship and didn't really have a true friendship before we got together. These past few months have been a lot and it caused us to go through the motions very fast paced."
"You want to break up?" Jacob asked.
"I want us to go slow and be friends for a little while. I think that's what we both need. I'm not trying to push you away, I love you, but I need to focus on me first." Anabelle saw the heartbroken expression on his face before sniffling. "Please try to understand. This," She made a motion between them, "what just happened is not healthy. Please I just need some space." She pleaded.
"You don't want me." Jacob muttered to himself.
"No! No, that's not it all." Anabelle protested. "I want you all the time, every minute of every day. I love you J. You're the best thing that has ever happened to me. I just need some space." Before Jacob could say anything in response, Anabelle kissed him fiercely. Jacob kissed back with vigor, slipping his tongue inside her mouth causing her to moan quietly. She caressed his cheek softly, slowing the kiss down before their lips were barely touching.
Anabelle moved to hug Jacob around his waist, placing her head on his chest to feel the beating of his heart. "I'm really sorry J." She mumbled.
"There's nothing to be sorry about honey. If you need some space, I'll give you space. I'M sorry for pushing you into a relationship so fast. And I'm so sorry for hurting you."
