My collab partner and I have been working on this since November. I basically did the entire fic while he gave me some ideas and critiqued them all together. Since this is also a franticcakes collab, we actually have some art showcasing the events of this fic. My partner drew the art while I colored it. I had a lot of fun writing this so I hope you'll enjoy reading this too! :D

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it and have a great day/happy holidays to those who don't! :D

FFN doesn't have the copy-pasting links here so you can to franticcakes on twitter or instagram to see the illustrations! ^^

BIG THANK YOU to my friend, Sree for beta reading this fic! uwu

Summary: Ruby and Sapphire search for the perfect Christmas gift for each other, dragging Emerald along the way with neither of them knowing.

Rating: T because Emerald drops the f-bomb and the bs-bomb but other than that, not much

62. On the Hunt

...

...

Sheets of paper rustled loudly, in spite of the loud holiday music playing around the Contest lobby.

Ruby ignored it and continued with his final stack of the papers. Once he finished, he grabbed a scarf from his bag and wrapped it around his neck.

Though, it wasn't his scarf; it was Sapphire's. He fixed it the other day but she forgot to get it. Luckily, they were neighbors, so he didn't need to worry when he could see her again.

He tucked the reddish scarf for the last time and then looked at the mirror, making sure he didn't look like a stressed student who had 50 assignments due tonight.

Well, he was kind of exaggerating at that part, but who could blame him? This day was absolutely stressful! He really hated the fact that Lisia made him plan the contest hall's Christmas party of all things while she left to do whatever she wanted; it was unfair!

He shook his head, averting his eyes from the mirror. This was better. His younger co-worker did mention that she would leak a photo of him and Sapphire kissing.

How did she get it? He didn't even want to know! That girl was sneaky and why did she always have to torment him?!

His train of thoughts was interrupted when he felt his Pokegear vibrate. Grabbing it from his pocket, he looked at the notification. His lips formed into a small smile.

It was from Sapphire, and he definitely needed a message from her despite what it could be.

From Sapphire:

Heya, Ruby, I won't be able to go home with ya today.

I have some Pokemon League duties to attend to.

I already let Troppy out from his Pokeball so he'll prolly arrive there soon!

Just whistle when ya need 'em! See ya later!

His eyebrows stitched together and frowned.

He was kind of bummed that Sapphire wasn't able to join him. After all, they would always go home together after work. He would either pick her up or she would, depending on who finished first. His fingers typed on the keypad to reply.

Despite disliking the idea of not going home with her, work was still important and he understood that.

To Sapphire:

Alright, I understand. You stay safe, okay?

I love you. ❤️

See you later.

Ruby would usually type long messages, but he felt like a brief one would do. He pressed 'send' and waited for a few moments.

When he saw a checkmark at the bottom of his message, he placed his phone back in his pocket then placed his hand on his chin.

Knowing Troppy, he would arrive in an hour or two if it just left Ever Grande City, and that gave him an idea.

The Christmas season arrived quicker than expected. Everyone in Hoenn was decorating their places with Christmas decorations. While it couldn't snow in this tropical region, it didn't stop the cold breeze from arriving and the holiday spirit to ignite in people's souls.

Ruby and Sapphire had been absolutely busy with work lately. Mostly because it was Sapphire's first Christmas as the Hoenn Champion and everyone in the Pokemon League apparently wanted to throw a huge Christmas party.

The contest hall was the same; it had been successful ever since Ruby started doing a full-time job here (with his fashion career on the side). While Lisia had been a pain in the butt to deal with, it was still fun working here.

(He could complain about how the contest idol apparently became like an annoying little sister to him and a best friend to Sapphire, but he didn't want to linger on it. Besides, he didn't want to admit that he could be quite jealous when Lisia often tried to steal Sapphire from him for some 'bestie bonding time'.)

With those conditions, he realized he never really found the time to find Sapphire a Christmas present. They had been in a relationship for a little while now, and the last gift he gave was a necklace and...a promise.

As cheesy as the latter sounded, he felt like he should kick it up a notch. Sapphire meant everything to him, and he wanted to give her the best Christmas present money could buy.

But the problem was, however, he had no idea what she wanted. He knew her very well as much as she did to him, but he never bothered to ask her since he wanted to keep it a surprise.

Giving her the perfect Christmas present that would top last year would be difficult, though. After all, Sapphire was never materialistic in the first place.

...

...

Ruby couldn't get his mind off of that 'flawless' Christmas gift. How could one even give the perfect gift to the most unparalleled woman to ever exist?

He stopped in his tracks when he saw a waffle stand nearby. He could buy something to eat before going to the mall but then, his eyes went round when he saw a familiar figure.

"Emerald!" Ruby called, dashing off to meet his friend.

The long-haired blond grabbed the waffle he just ordered and raised an eyebrow. "What?" he asked, then took a bite from his treat.

Ruby panted for a few moments before standing upright. "I need you to go to the mall with me!"

The Calmer didn't like the idea. He made sure to swallow the food in his mouth before replying, "What the? Why me? I don't wanna go shopping with you!"

"But this is important! I need to find the perfect Christmas gift for Sapphire!" Ruby clutched his hands together, desperately pleading.

Emerald couldn't help but roll his eyes. He couldn't believe this dude. Didn't he propose to her already? He could've sworn Blue gossiped to him about this. "Can't you just get her an engagement ring?"

Ruby opened his mouth, but tried as he might, he couldn't respond; he didn't know how to respond.

In his defense, he would love to marry Sapphire—he did promise to marry her one day—but he thought that would be too early. He would love to finally tie the knot with her and officially spend the rest of his life with her, but...Sapphire had to be ready like he was too. He couldn't and shouldn't rush her just because he wanted to.

"J-Just go with me, alright?" he answered with a cracked tone.

Emerald knew he was avoiding the question, but let him slip. He had no time for his friend's bullshit, after all. "If I don't get hot chocolate after this, you will taste my E-shooter's mud. It's very fresh this season," he threatened, causing Ruby to gulp.

He feared for his life now.

"Fine!" the older boy gave in. "I'll give you some money after this."

Emerald couldn't help but smirk. Merry Christmas to him, indeed.

...

...

The mall wasn't that far from the Contest Hall (thankfully), so they were able to arrive there quickly. Out of nowhere and much to Emerald's dismay, Ruby started ranting.

It wasn't just any rant; he sounded unsure for once in his life and the younger lad was wondering why.

"So, I was thinking of making a new cape for Sapphire," the Charmer started and the smaller boy was partially listening to it. "You know, the Champion's cape. But my master said I couldn't just do that. The Champion's cape is sacred for some reason, so making one for my girlfriend means disrespecting tradition. And well," he cackled, rubbing his nape. "Maybe I shouldn't get Sapphire in trouble. I'm also thinking of giving her a necklace, but I already did that last year, so—"

"If you want an accessory, then," Emerald interrupted, making Ruby stop. "Why not a wedding ring?"

Ruby's eyes widened. He almost bumped onto the mall's entrance if he didn't stop in his tracks. He coughed. "O-Oh look," he stammered, changing the subject. "We're here!"

Emerald's lips pouted. He swore Ruby was bullshitting him at this point.

And it worsened when Ruby continued spouting on another set of gifts he had planned for Sapphire.

"I was thinking of knitting her a scarf too but that would be too cliché, you know?"

"Yeah, sure," the blond replied. His tone was lacking in enthusiasm and Ruby didn't seem to have noticed it and continued blabbering.

His friend kept on going on and on and on and on, even if they were inside the department store, and Emerald just couldn't take it anymore.

Why did he even end up here?! He wasn't even a couple's therapist to begin with!

"Dammit," he cussed inaudibly, smacking his palm on his face. "Lover boy's problem could easily be solved if he just bought a wedding ring!"

"Did you say something, Emerald?" Ruby asked, turning around to look at him, but Emerald shook his head. His eyebrows knitted. He could've sworn he heard him say something.

It was probably his imagination.

"So, anyway," he continued his chattering and it bore the hell out of Emerald.

The latter didn't even care if he left his friend hanging; he just didn't want to be part of this Christmas shopping. Not only was it boring, but it was also the most stressful time of the year, and he didn't have time for such things!

"I'm gonna pee," Emerald spoke, but Ruby's eyes remained on the potential presents in front of him.

"Sure," Ruby replied, still examining the items.

The Calmer didn't waste a second and dashed away from his older friend and straight to the exit. He was smiling whilst running; he didn't know lying his way out would be that easy.

He was almost close to the exit when he bumped into someone. His butt fell on the floor as he shook his head, ready to face the small consequence of his action. Astonishingly, he bumped into someone he was familiar with for some reason.

"Sapphire?" he inquired, slowly standing up.

"Emerald!" Sapphire beamed. She grabbed him for a bear hug, then let him down after several seconds.

The younger boy was wondering why she was wearing a red baseball cap, a pair of glasses, and a facemask. Her hair seemed to be tied into a messy bun.

"Why are you dre—"

"I need yer help!" Sapphire begged and Emerald hoped it wasn't what he thought it was. "I need to find a really good Christmas present for Ruby!"

Emerald hated being right. "No," he replied firmly. "I—"

"But this is important!" the Conqueror insisted, grabbing his hands and shaking them a bit. "This is the only free time I have to buy him a present!"

"But he's your boyfriend!" Emerald exclaimed, throwing his arms in the air. "You know him waaaay better than I do!"

Sapphire was silent and thanks to her facemask, Emerald had no idea if she was frowning or not.

He was worried about two possibilities, though.

If he made her cry, he would have to answer an angry Ruby.

If he pissed her off, then it's a goodbye holiday season and hello to his very own holiday funeral.

He gulped, hoping for neither.

A few moments of silence passed, Sapphire lifted her drooping shoulders and she seemed to be smiling based on her eyes being closed.

Well, he hoped that she was.

"I know, I do, yer right," she acknowledged. "I should know by now. I can ask him directly, but I don't wanna since I want it to be a surprise. So, can ya help me? Please?"

Emerald opened his mouth to release a sigh. If he disagreed, he would most likely end up digging his own grave. He grumbled and opted to play it safe. He bounced his head for a nod, much to the brunette's delight.

"Fine," he agreed. "Tell me your ideas."

"Well," Sapphire tapped her chin. "I was thinkin' of buyin' him an expensive sewing kit, but I think he'll expect that. I know there's this new cool Pokeblock case, but it was sold out when I went to buy one. I tried orderin' online too, but a lot of websites say they wouldn't have any stocks until the holiday season is over, even on eChu. I..."

Emerald let the Hoenn Champion vent, as he tried to find a way to escape.

He later noticed her inspecting the scarves and mittens while talking. He slowly walked back, knowing this was his chance to escape, and hid in the display of hanging clothes. When he couldn't hear her voice clearly, he turned his heel and sprinted away from her.

He went to the left exit this time, hoping Ruby wasn't there.

But, he was, and Emerald hated it.

The Calmer stopped in his tracks and he was beyond confused when he heard Ruby still rambling about what present he should give to Sapphire. He decided to just let it go then looked at the right exit. His eyes squinted and despite his vision wasn't good like Sapphire's, he could clearly see her red cap. He gritted his teeth then looked at the left exit.

Wonderful.

He couldn't escape using both exits of the department store. If he used the left outlet, Ruby would be there. If he used the right outlet, he would bump into Sapphire.

Emerald couldn't help but scream in frustration, but he opted not to. He just facepalmed. I hate my life right now. I'm sooo fucking done.

"Maybe I should give her a keychain!" Ruby declared but later shook his head. "Yeah, I don't think it's a good idea."

Emerald stared at him. "You literally just answered your own question."

Ruby blinked. "What?"

"Yeah, bad idea," he responded and chose to escape once again.

He waited for Ruby to prattle again and when he did, the Calmer slipped past him. He hid in the displayed clothes once again and ran towards the doorway, but Sapphire was there, causing him to stop and gasp for air. He observed her.

"Ya think he'll like this makeup kit?" Sapphire asked and Emerald stopped to instill the idea.

Ruby wore makeup?!

"Wait, you mean—"

"Yeah, yer right," Sapphire answered her own question. "I already gave one on his birthday."

Emerald released an exasperated breath. These two were starting to get on his nerves. He went to Hoenn to spend the holidays at the Trick Master's place! He didn't sign up to be these two's therapist or whatever!

"Yeah, sure," he replied nonchalantly and went back to his escape routine.

Yet, once again, he met up with Ruby who happened to be still blathering.

"Maybe I should give her a bracelet? Maybe a matching bracelet!"

Emerald glared at him as if he was the biggest idiot he knew. (He was if it weren't for Gold.)

Ruby, however, didn't notice any of Emerald's frustrations and just laughed at himself. "Yeah, maybe I can save that for our anniversary."

Emerald hated the fact that Hoopa wasn't here when he needed it the most. He threw his head and just tried to flee using the right exit. He was expecting to meet a babbling Sapphire but surprisingly, she wasn't and it made him curious.

"Yo, Sapphire," he called, but she was too busy looking at a pair of expensive running shoes. Did she finally make her decision? "Are you planning to buy that for Ruby?"

"Huh?" Sapphire snapped out of her trance. She looked at Emerald then at the running shoes. She shook her head. "Ah, no! No!" she declined then let out a nervous cackle. "Ruby already has a pair. My dad is the one who gave him those this time. I was just..." She coughed to get rid of the heat crawling on her cheeks. "I was just thinkin' if I can run even faster with it..."

For the first time since he entered the mall, Emerald released a genuine fit of chortle. He was aware of how fast she was and he couldn't imagine how much faster she would go with those. "You'll probably run faster than the speed of sound," he commented, wiping a tear off his eye.

Sapphire laughed with him. "Maybe, but I'm supposed to be choosin' a gift for Ruby."

Her words gave Emerald an idea. He snapped his fingers. "I'm going to the bathroom."

Sapphire gave him a look before nodding. "Sure."

Emerald scampered away from the Conqueror and went to the Charmer as quickly as his little legs could carry him. He was planning to flee from his friends and he hoped this idea would help him with that.

"Ruby!" he called and saw his older friend looking at a sewing kit. "Yo, Ruby!"

"Huh?" Ruby's eyes widened then moved his head to look at his friend. "Oh, Emerald. I didn't know it was you," he anxiously chuckled. Emerald was starting to wonder if Ruby was even paying attention to everything in the first place.

He shook his head. He wanted to get out of here soon and he had to tell Ruby what Sapphire wanted for Christmas. "Has Sapphire ever mentioned wanting to have running shoes?"

Ruby's eyebrows drew together. "What do you mean?"

Emerald didn't know if Ruby was just acting dumb or not, but he was in a hurry. "Just give her a pair of running shoes, dumbass!"

Something inside Ruby clicked. He clenched his right fist and gently smacked it on his left palm. "You're right!" he uttered. "Sapphire did mention that she's curious how fast she can run with those things! I'll buy her that! Thanks, Emerald!"

Emerald rubbed his finger under his nose and grinned. "Yeah, sure," He dropped his arm. "By the way, why are you looking at that sewing kit?"

"Well," Ruby scratched his head. "I really wanna buy one since it has a Wooloo wool freebie, but I shouldn't. I came here to buy Sapphire a gift."

"Uhuh," Emerald responded. If he wanted that, then he could tell this to Sapphire and his problem would be solved! "I'll be going to the bathroom again."

"Again?" Ruby asked and Emerald glared at him.

"Do you want to clean my pee?"

"NO!" Ruby immediately waved his hands, indicating his initial refusal. "Go! I'm fine!"

Emerald smirked under his breath. He knew that would work and now it was time to help Sapphire. He was able to see her quickly since she was going in this direction. It made him realize something, though.

He turned to see whether Ruby was still here but his friend wandered off again. He was assuming he went to the shoe aisle. He decided to just let him go and focus on Sapphire.

"Yo, Sapphire!" he grabbed her hand and dragged her to the sewing kit Ruby was looking at earlier. "I got an idea of what you should give Ruby!" He stopped and showed her the item and Sapphire blinked. She was confused.

The Hoenn Champion removed her hand from Emerald and gazed at the new sewing kit. She bit her lip. "But...wouldn't Ruby expect me to give him this one?"

Emerald shrugged. "Maybe," he stated. "But it's the thought that counts, right?"

He was right, and Sapphire knew it. She scrutinized it carefully then saw the deal that came along with it. Her eyes sparkled with enthusiasm. "Wait, so, if ya bought this at full price, ya can get an expensive wool in return?"

Emerald honestly didn't know that. He read the details written right next to the product. His eyes widened like saucers.

Did Sapphire even have enough money to pay for this?!

"Arceus, this thing's expensive," he whispered. "But, yeah, I guess you can get the expensive wool if you did."

"Perfect! Ruby hasn't upgraded his sewing kit since he moved to Hoenn, so this is perfect! Thanks, Emerald!" Sapphire grabbed her friend again and gave him another embrace.

"Hey!" Emerald tried to remove himself from it, but her embrace was too tight.

"Yer a genius!" She giggled before placing him down.

Emerald stood up straight, as he tried to fight the embarrassed blush on his cheeks. "It's fine," he brushed it off like it was nothing. "Just give me something in return then we're even."

Sapphire nodded. "Sure!"

Emerald watched Sapphire call for a saleslady for further assistance, as he folded his arms across his chest. His lips curved into a victorious smirk. He was proud of himself for making his friends finally shut up. Now, he could finally leave in peace.

As he was about to turn around, he realized something.

Sapphire and Ruby were shopping in the same department store and neither of them knew? He looked at Sapphire, making sure if he was correct. He then hurried over to the other side of the store to see Ruby. Both were talking to different salesladies.

His eyes narrowed as his jaw slacked.

They were shopping in the same department store and neither of them knew?!

Just how blind could love get?!

He couldn't take it anymore and just screamed, "What the fuck is up with those two?!"

Some shoppers stopped when they heard the cussing and looked at him. Emerald didn't pay heed; he was so done with his friends' bullshit that he didn't care about the eyes staring at him.

"Whose angry child is this?" one shopper asked whilst their companions shrugged.

The Calmer released a loud groan before stomping out of the store.

He finally left this stupid emporium after so long.

...

The blond decided to relax at this place called 'Alcremie's Bakery'. He sat on the chair as he waited for his order to arrive. He didn't know how long he was waiting in line nor did he care; he just wanted some peace and maybe eating some sweets would do.

He released a breath but halted when he saw Sapphire approaching.

Well, it was probably her since she was wearing a red cap and a facemask.

"Emerald!" the Conqueror called and stood in front of his table. She grabbed something from her wallet and grabbed his hand. "Thanks again!" She handed him some money before letting go. "Here's the money I promised. I'll see ya later!"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait!" he called, gripping the money in his hand. They all seemed to be paper money, too. How did she even get this much money?! Was being the Hoenn Champion meant having lucrative cash too?!

Sapphire ceased her movements and raised an eyebrow. "Yeah?"

"You didn't see him?"

She was baffled and Emerald just used his free palm to smack his forehead once more.

"Ruby!" the younger boy shrieked, waving his arms in the air. "He was in the same store earlier!"

She let out a sparse cackle and Emerald had no idea why. "Ya know why I'm dressed up like this?"

Emerald's lips puckered for a pout, as he folded his arms across his chest. "Was gonna ask you until you interrupted me!"

Sapphire giggled at that. "Sorry 'bout that," She apologized. She genuinely didn't know. "Anyway, like I told ya before," she continued. "Ruby knows me too well so I'm tryin' to avoid him. Luckily, he can get easily absorbed when shoppin' but I just hafta wear a disguise just to be safe," she explained and Emerald understood why. But despite that, he was still annoyed.

"Look, I understand your point, but—"

"Don't tell him I was here, okay?" She raised her arm then waved at him. "See ya!" she quipped then scampered off before the Calmer could even say anything.

Moments after the Conqueror left, her boyfriend arrived and Emerald was not thrilled to see him.

"There you are," Ruby stated before grabbing something in his pocket. "I was looking everywhere for you!"

"Let me guess," Emerald retorted. "You didn't see Sapphire."

Ruby's eyes widened in shock. He scanned the place, hoping he could get a glimpse of her. "Where?!"

Emerald blinked so tediously that one would mistake him as a tired college student. "You are fucking blind."

Ruby was bewildered at the fact that Emerald cussed at him and called him blind at the same time. "Well, that's rude. I—"

"Did you not recognize her brown hair anywhere?!"

Ruby's blank face showed everything. "What?"

"Ugh!" Emerald slammed his fist on the table. "I'm just messing with you, dumbass! Give me my payment and then leave!"

"Geez," Ruby was more confused. He...honestly wasn't paying attention to his surroundings while shopping, but why did Emerald have to be so annoyed? Still, he should get home by now before Sapphire does. "Okay, fine," He placed the money on the table then left silently.

The blond released the biggest relieved sigh he had in a while.

Finally, some peace and quiet.

December 24

4:00 PM

Christmas Eve

Somewhere in Route 101

Ruby took a step back as he wiped the sweat off his forehead. He inspected every nook and cranny of the newly decorated cavern.

Everything seemed to have met his standards, causing him to smile and grab a handkerchief from his pocket. He wiped off the sweat from his face before removing his shirt.

He was lucky that Sapphire didn't seem to suspect that he bought her a gift a few days ago. He still didn't know what Emerald was talking about, and when he texted his friend a day after, he left him on read.

He found that rude, but he tried not to let it bother him. He breathed, as he drew his eyebrows together, and bit his lip.

He could've sworn he brought an extra shirt here.

Standing up, he went to the drawer which happened to be inside the tent of the secret base.

...

...

Sapphire leaned in forward, as she let her Salamence, Mandero, flew as fast as he could. She bit her lip, showing her cute fang, as her pupils flared and her forehead creased.

She hated the fact that she was late; everyone in the Pokemon League didn't want her to leave unless she ate lunch with them. When she finished her meal, they insisted on a party game after that.

It was frustrating that they took most of her time. As much as she wanted to just teleport with her Gallade to the secret base to save time, she ended up flying with her fastest Pokemon, Mandero, to cool herself from this aggravated sensation.

Thankfully, the Salamence didn't hesitate to soar at sonic speed; they were able to fly past Pacifidlog Town in 20 minutes and Sapphire had never been relieved.

However, her distressed feeling returned when Ruby sent her a text message. He arrived on time at the secret base while she was still in the sky with Mandero.

She desperately hoped that she wouldn't keep Ruby waiting for so long. Maybe she should've let him pick her up like he insisted. Based on his text messages, he really wanted to do so once he left the Contest Hall's own Christmas party.

It was too late for that, apparently, but still, it could've been that way.

Sapphire's body loosened when she spotted a familiar tree a few yards away. Her mouth curved into a grin and looked at the Pokemon she used to be scared of. "We're almost there, Mandero!"

The Salamence roared happily but that smile was turned upside down when his trainer stood up on his back. He tried telling her to stop through his gentle roars, but it was too late; she jumped several feet away from the ground and he panicked at that.

The Dragon-Flying Type descended, hoping to cease his trainer's fall before she could hurt herself.

To his surprise, she giggled and grabbed a tree branch with her left arm. She swayed her legs, forcing her body to follow the same motion, before landing on the cavern's entrance. Mandero released a breath.

Thank goodness she was alright.

"Thanks for the ride, Mandero!" Sapphire beamed. "Ya can go fly around if ya want. I'll see ya later!"

The Salamence nodded and just landed on the ground, trying to calm himself. Sometimes, his trainer could be too extreme. He now understood why her human mate-lover was very overprotective.

...

...

"Ruby?" the brunette's voice echoed. She placed her gift next to the Mimikyu plush and looked around, trying to find her boyfriend. She then furrowed her eyebrows and grabbed her Pokegear.

This was strange. She thought he arrived already. Judging by the time stamp of his message and the current time registered in her Pokegear, she arrived 12 minutes after.

Where did he go?

"Sapphire?!" Ruby hollered inside the tent. He forgot what he was searching for and went outside from it, causing Sapphire's eyes to widen and her face to heat up. "Welcome home! Don't you like the deco—"

"RUBY!" Sapphire shrieked, closing her eyes, and turned around.

Ruby stitched his eyebrows together before blinking. Why wasn't she happy to see him? "Hey, I—"

"I ain't lookin' at ya until ya put a shirt on!"

Ruby now understood what she meant. He rubbed his neck with his right hand and burst into laughter.

Oh, right, he was supposed to be looking for a clean shirt.

Still, he was a tad thankful that he got to see her cute reaction. He may not be as...muscular as she was, but he still found it charming that she often gets flustered every time she sees him like this.

"Right, right," he answered and grabbed a clean shirt he left in the tent.

While he was putting it on, Sapphire sat on the couch, stealing glances at him. In her defense, she was only making sure he was actually putting a shirt on.

"There, I'm all dressed up. You can look at me now."

Sapphire whirled around. She gave him a once-over with her lips pressed together, suppressing her fang from sticking out. The Charmer couldn't help but chuckle at how...endearing she looked. She then sniffed the air and Ruby was hoping his sweat wasn't mixed with it.

"Wait," she paused before her eyes went round. "Ya decorated the secret base while waitin' for me?"

Ruby had a sheepish yet arrogant smirk. "Yes, I have," he declared proudly. "What do you think?"

She cracked a lopsided smile. "I like it."

"Good to know," Ruby sat right next to her and kissed her hair. He smiled. She smelled like berries and the forest. It was an odd mix, but he loved it. It was perfect. "How was the party?"

"Ehh," Sapphire made sure to stare at the floor, as her flushed cheeks returned. "It was fine, I guess? I should've arrived early but they all wanted to have a party game before I left. I begged yer father and even Wallace and my master to let me go, but they all refused," she paused before asking, "How about ya? Is it better there?"

"Mmm," Ruby hummed, his arms not leaving her waist, and pulled her closer. "It was...fine too, I guess? It was boring without you, though."

Sapphire swallowed a lump in her throat. Even if she and Ruby had been dating for a long time now, she still couldn't control this jittery sensation. "Y-Yeah," she cracked. "I-I mean, I always see the Elite Four and some Gym Leaders every day, but I just wanna leave the party early. Ya know?"

Ruby couldn't help from cackling. Sapphire heard it loudly and clearly, and his breath tickled her ear. It was both comforting and nerve-wracking.

"But you see me every day, though," he teased and Sapphire rolled her eyes.

There he goes again.

"T-That's not what I meant, dummy!" she argued, her cheeks were slowly turning red like a Tamato Berry.

Ruby chuckled; he was enjoying this reaction. He then pecked her cheek.

"I know," he replied, as his right arm went on her back and pulled her for a hug. Sapphire's body relaxed and returned to wrap her arms around him. She could smell his perfume mixed with his sweat. As someone with a sensitive nose, she shouldn't like it but she did.

"If it means anything," he continued, removing himself from their hug but his arms remained on her waist. He kissed her forehead, making her blush once again. "I see the contest people every day too, so I'm sure they won't mind if I leave early."

"I-I'm...sure they won't..." she mumbled with her fang poking out, and Ruby couldn't help but stare at her.

His eyes were soft as a cloud and it was filled with so much love and passion for her. He smiled and used his right hand to caress her cheek. He then slowly leaned his forehead on hers before closing his eyes. He breathed gently.

The holiday season was often one of the busiest times of the year and Ruby felt blessed to finally spend some quality time with the woman he loved.

"Merry Christmas, Sapphire," he greeted, before kissing her forehead as gently as possible. In retrospect, forehead kisses often meant to show how special one's partner was. And for Ruby, Sapphire meant everything to him and he was more than grateful to have her.

Sapphire knew this, for she had felt it countless times. Holding her breath, she buried her head in his chest and muttered, "Merry Christmas, Ruby."

There was silence after that, and neither cared; they just enjoyed the time they have together, as they always did. Ruby's arms never left hers; he was caging her in it and protecting her as if she was the most precious thing in his life, which she was and would always be.

Another moment of silence passed, Sapphire removed her face from his chest and looked at him. He could tell that she was nervous, and whatever her reason was, he would find a way to erase such negative feelings.

"I, uhh," she gritted her teeth. "I-I got ya a present!" she grabbed the medium-sized box she placed right next to the Mimikyu plush.

Ruby's lips twisted into a smile. She looked so adorable. "I got one too," he responded softly and grabbed his that was placed next to a Psyduck plush. "Wanna open them after exchanging?"

He was expecting a cheerful reply, but she hesitated for a bit before agreeing. He didn't know why she was suddenly tense and he had a slight idea why. He decided to do it subtly.

"Hmm," he hummed playfully. "I wonder what this is?" he turned to look at her and her reaction was the same. He bit his lip.

He was right; this was about the present.

Whatever it would be, he knew he would love it since it came from her.

He slowly unwrapped the present. He glanced at her and bit his lip. He couldn't figure out why she seemed uneasy but looked back at the present, hoping he could cheer her up with his genuine reaction.

He removed those thoughts and breathed, removing the excess packaging on top of the gift. He didn't get a good view of the item, for the tears forming in his eyes blocked it. He still couldn't believe it.

"Sapphire, this...this is..."

"Y-Yeah," she stammered, her gaze suddenly went on the carpet. "I know it's basic, but—"

"I love it!"

"You—" she stopped and looked at him. Her anxious mind became a perplexed one. "Huh?"

Ruby took the sewing kit out and inspected it. He then noticed the wool wrapped under it. He felt more elated when his hand touched the cloth. "I-Is this a rare wool made from a Wooloo's?"

Sapphire leisurely bobbed her head. "Y-Yeah," she replied bashfully. "It's a freebie, but only if I paid with the full—"

Ruby bawled before throwing himself at her for a hug. Sapphire caught him, as he let out a hearty laughter. He moved his lips closer and pecked hers for a few moments, before continuing his genuine cackling. "I love it!"

A tear fell from Sapphire's eye. She didn't expect this and the happiness Ruby was showing was real and authentic. She was beyond contented that he enjoyed her gift.

"I always wanted to buy a new sewing kit," Ruby removed himself from their embrace and went back to examining the presents he received. "These are so expensive but I can't believe you bought these for me! I—" His smile dropped when he noticed her whimpering. He went back to cup her cheeks with both hands this time and used his thumbs to wipe them off. "Hey, you okay, love?"

Sapphire sobbed and held his hand. "Y-Yeah," she choked. "I'm just happy that ya like it."

"I love it," Ruby commented. "Now it's my turn to make you happy," He kissed her lips briefly before handing her his gift. "Here."

Sapphire sniffed and grabbed the box. She tore the wrapper with no effort and despite the mess she made, Ruby was pleased to see her like that. Her eyes sparkled with excitement. "A-Are these?"

Ruby's honest smile was replaced with a smug expression. "You can now live your dreams, my love."

It was now Sapphire's turn to throw herself at him. Ruby caught her but in doing so, made him fall on the carpet with his girlfriend on top of him. He didn't mind, though. As long as she was happy.

"Thank ya!" Sapphire hugged him so tightly that he returned the same gesture. "I love it! Ya shouldn't have!" She sat up and placed the shoes back in the box for safekeeping.

Ruby sat up as well and returned his hand to hold her cheek. "I love you, Sapphire."

Sapphire grinned. "I love ya too, Ruby."

"Hmm," he chuckled, before looking up. Sapphire followed and she shook her head while laughing.

It turned out there was a mistletoe attached to the ceiling.

She pouted. "Ya did that on purpose, don't ya?"

"Maybe," Ruby laughed. "but does that mean I can kiss you?"

Sapphire giggled. "Ya've been doin' that ever since I got here, silly!"

"Well," Ruby moved closer. "I guess I'll keep on giving you more, then."

"Y-Yeah..." Sapphire answered as they stared into each other's eyes before tilting their heads and closing the gap between them for a kiss.

Somewhere in Route 110

Trick Master's House

Emerald slouched on the couch, as his eyes were glued to the ceiling.

He decided to spend Christmas at the Trick Master's place this year and as much as he enjoyed the old man's company, there was one thing he hated that didn't happen.

"I didn't get my hot chocolate..." he muttered and rolled to the side. "I should've stayed in Johto."

He didn't even want to hang out with Ruby and Sapphire today; those two were probably doing their cheesy romantic stuff and he would like to not be a third wheel for once.

A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts, causing him to sit up. He didn't know who it was nor he was expecting visitors. Maybe it was the Trick Master since he did go to the mall to buy some chocolates.

When the Calmer opened the door, he was surprised to see Ruby and Sapphire. The latter was holding a box and he was so tempted to close the door.

He did not have time for them!

"Emerald!" Sapphire greeted. "We gotcha some hot chocolate and cookies!"

"It was Sapphire's idea," Ruby added with a smirk. "She said giving you money wasn't enough."

"Oh," Emerald replied nonchalantly. "Gee, I hope you finally figured out that Sapphire was shopping in the same store days ago."

Ruby chortled anxiously. "Y-Yeah," he stammered. "I was...oblivious..."

"No, you're just stupid," the blond retorted, offending Ruby.

"Hey! I—"

"He can be," Sapphire interrupted. "sometimes," she giggled and it was enough to ease Ruby's annoyance.

"Yeah," Emerald's tone was nonchalant. "Now, if you just give me the box of treats and go home—"

"Nu-uh," Sapphire disapproved, placing her foot to open the door a bit. "We're eatin' it together!"

"But—"

"Come on!" Sapphire practically invited herself in with Ruby following her.

Emerald didn't like it at first, but hey, this was better than waiting for the Trick Master alone. Plus, he finally got what he wanted: hot chocolate, cookies, and some time with his friends.

...despite the fact that the lovebirds ended up flirting with each other again.

"Dammit! Just get your own room!"

Emerald needs a break from these two ))):

I feel like both the Pokemon Contest and the Pokemon League require paperwork for formalities and they have to have paperwork. We can't just suffer alone with the paperwork, the pokemon world has to have some. :'D

eChu = eBay

[Yes it's stupid but I don't know. Chu sounds cute okay dsfjdjgkdgdf]

In the RS arc, Sapphire was like "blegh" when she found out that Ruby wears makeup. I like to imagine he still does but this time, Sapphire accepts it and both wear makeup. Sapphire wears makeup in formal parties and Ruby just does when he feels like it which is every day but personally, it's just foundation :D I'm not a makeup person myself [I don't like it at all] so yeah,,

Kusaka-san and Yamamoto-san are afraid to give Sapphire muscular arms and some abs like the ones Korra and She-Ra have, so I did what I have to do.

As usual, Mandero the Salamence is related to my time travel multichap fic :D [A Ripple in Time]

Happy holidays and a very safe one ovo
