Entry 61: 6.23.80 "Family Planning?"
My dad was 28 when he had me. My grandfather was 25 when he had my dad. I can honestly say I wasn't planning on having kids until my mid-20s, but with things the way they are that might change. With everything else in the vault there really isn't anything that actively discourages having kids. We've already had a few births in the vault over the last three years, and from what I can tell it isn't too bad. Not the giving birth part, from what I've read I am quite confident that hurts like an absolute bitch. But the raising kids part. After a few weeks the tykes are cared for by the vault nursery staff and the parents can go back to work.
If we're on schedule to open up in three years that would mean that any kids we have would be around 2 the time the vault opens up, but chances are we wouldn't all go to the surface. We have a somewhat limited food supply, but with hydroponics and the water system working properly there isn't a drastic concern in the next few years for us to become traders or farmers up top. While the surface might not be desirable, the vault is safe at least, and as long as we keep the kids down here most of the time it should be okay, right?
I guess my biggest concern at the moment is if I can manage to be a decent dad. I don't exactly have a role model at the moment, and while I don't think I'd be terrible, I don't have a clue what to do.
