Gus's POV

The girls are nearly 6 months old now, and not a day goes by when I don't remember that I shouldn't take a second for granted. I couldn't have even dreamed all of this could happen a few years ago. Now Hazel Grace is my forever, and I'm hers, Forever, Such a strange notion, that. I'm so thankful we were given the chance for our infinity to be so much bigger than we both thought. I'm watching Hazel Grace play with the girls, and I'm taking it all in because if anyone knows it could all disappear tomorrow, it's us. She smiles up at me and pats the floor. I join them, and we spend the next hour shaking toys for them and just enjoying the moment,

We've come to learn thanks to our concept of infinity that what we do doesn't have to be huge. It just has to mean something. You can make meaning out of any moment if you try hard enough, I'm getting introspective again, aren't I? My apologies. Let me go back to telling you about today. Suddenly, the doorbell rings, and Hazel Grace goes to get up.

Me: No, stay. It's okay. I'll get it.

Hazel: Are you sure?

Me: Absolutely.

Hazel remains on the rug with them. I don't like her to try to get up too fast because it gives her lungs another opportunity to suck at being lungs and it often takes ages for her to get her breath back. The Philanxifor cured the cancer, but the cancer scarred her lungs almost beyond repair, hence why the oxygen is still like a faithful shadow. Anyway, I go to get the door and Lidevij is standing on the porch, I smile, glad to see our friend, albeit a little surprised. She smiles, too, and gives me a big hug.

Lidevij: Augustus! So good to see you again!

Me (Laughing): And you, Lidevij! Hazel Grace! Look who's here.

Hazel smiles, gets up slowly, and comes over, hugging her.

Hazel: Lidevij! If I'd have known you were coming, I'd have cleaned up a little.

Lidevij (Chuckling): Oh, it's no matter, Hazel. Really. I wanted to surprise you, and anyway, there are many more important things in the world than how a house looks. I came for you, not to use a white glove.

Hazel Grace gives a laugh and a nod and says she has a point. Lidevij immediately goes to play with the babies and Hazel Grace and I laugh and tell her who's who.

Me: Lidevij, we wanted to ask you something.

Lidevij: Yes? She's playing with Abby, who has already taken up residence in her lap.

Hazel: We were wondering if you might want to be the girls' godmother.

Lidevij immediately tears up and agrees, saying it would be her pleasure.

Hazel: How long will you be in town?

Lidevij: Oh, a week or so.

Hazel: Well, if you wanted, you could stay in our guest room.

Lidevij smiles and asks if she is sure, saying she doesn't want to impose. Hazel smiles and tells her that no, we don't mind, and that yes, we'd love to have her stay with us. Finally, Lidevij nods and agrees. She doesn't say it, but I get the feeling she's very glad we said she could stay. She spends the afternoon playing with them while chatting with us. She tells us she is seeing Victor, our waiter from Oranjee.

Hazel: Really?

Lidevij (Smiling): Yes. For about two months now.

Me: I'm happy for you.

Hazel Grace nods, giggles, and agrees, telling her that she's sure they're great together. They continue chatting as we play with the girls, Later when Lidevij has gone to our guest room to read and the girls are in bed, I decide to bring up something that I've been thinking about for awhile.

Me: Hazel Grace?

Hazel Grace: Yeah?

Me: Why did you wait til we were in the Anne Frank House to let yourself go?

Hazel Grace: I think it was the gravity of Anne's situation, I realized that she didn't have much time to love, and I knew that I was lucky, so I thought, I love him, too, and I haven't got the time to deny it anymore. Whatever happens will happen no matter what.

I smile and kiss her and inform her I'm so incredibly happy she had.

Me: Okay?

Hazel Grace: Okay.
