Chapter 35: The Promised Date
"Oh Princess!" Drew called from on May's balcony.
Dahlia walked out. "You're here. May is getting dressed right now."
"Oh. Okay."
"So, you two made up." Dahlia said.
"Yep."
"Mind telling me why you cheated on her?" Dahlia asked angrily.
"Umm...well, to be honest...I don't even know." Drew said. "That girl that you two saw me kiss on the forehead put me under some kind of spell or something."
"A spell?" May asked as she walked out on the balcony. "I should've known."
"Yeah. It's confusing to me to think about." Drew said.
"Well, we can talk about it in the sky." May said, walking closer to the railing.
Drew held out his hand and May took it. "Do you like how I came earlier than I said?" Drew asked. Drew helped May onto the carpet. He climbed onto it after her.
"Yes I do. It shows me that that part of you is back. The part where you put in the effort to make me happy."
Drew smiled. "Well, ready to go?" He asked.
May looked at Dahlia.
"Have fun May." Dahlia said.
May looked back at Drew. "Ready when you are!"
"Carpet, let's go." Drew said, holding the tassels to control the carpet. They started flying away from the castle.
"So, tell me about the spell." May said.
"Okay. Carpet, take it slow." Drew said. He released the tassels to let the carpet fly them wherever it wanted. Drew and May now face each other.
"So, I don't have proof that I was spelled, but considering how I lost the memories of us being together, it seems like it could be a spell. Just like when Justin erased your memories." Drew said.
"Do you know when you could've possibly been spelled by Gabriella?" May asked.
"Hmm…" Drew started thinking. "Oh! I know! Tuesday, the day I forgot about our relationship. I was at my locker in the morning and Gabriella came up to me and gave me a cookie."
May perked up an eyebrow. "A cookie?"
"I know it sounds crazy, but when I took a bite out of it, that's probably when I forgot everything."
"Wait, wait, wait." May said. "You mean to tell me that you accepted a gift from a fan?"
"...yes." Drew answered after hesitating. May frowned. "But it was only because she kept bothering me about it." He said quickly.
May smiled slightly. "Well, at least it wasn't poison."
"Yeah...but forgetting that I was dating you is close enough to poison to me." Drew said.
"Aww...that's sweet, I think?"
Drew chuckled. "Anyway, those cookies that Gabriella had were probably filled with a Love potion."
"But why would she do that?" May asked. "And how did she do that?"
"She definitely was jealous of you, so she gave me a love potion to make me fall in love with her. As for how...I have no clue how she made it. But a magical jewel has to be behind it."
"If she's jealous, she's way too jealous if she tried to force you to love her."
"Yeah…"
"How did you break the spell anyway?" May asked.
"Oh. When we kissed. Like last time." Drew answered.
May smiled. "True love's kiss." Drew nodded.
"The memories flowed back into my head when we kissed. And I remembered everything again."
May smiled. "Well, I'm really glad you remember again."
"Me too."
"I'll have you know that when I saw you riding on this carpet with Gabriella, my heart broke."
"Sorry about that May." Drew apologized. "Are you really sure that this single carpet ride will make up for hurting you?"
"Not at all." May answered. "But it will make up for a little bit of hurting me. You'll have to make up the rest as time goes on."
"How long will it take?" Drew asked.
"It depends on everything you do that says 'I'm sorry'." May answered. "Depending on how often you do things for me, the less time it will take."
"Oh. You'll just enjoy this, huh?" Drew asked.
"Maybe." She said, giggling.
"Well, first thing I'll do is this." Drew said as he opened up the picnic basket in the middle of them.
"Ooh! Chocolate-covered strawberries!" May exclaimed, reaching in the basket and eating a strawberry.
Drew chuckled. May looked at him in confusion.
"What's so funny?" May asked.
"One strawberry in and you're already making a mess." Drew said as he reached his hand out and brushed the spot next to her mouth, wiping away some chocolate.
May blushed as Drew touched her face.
Drew pulled his hand back. "All clean."
"T-thanks." May stuttered.
Drew looked around. "Carpet, stop here." The magic carpet came to a stop.
May and Drew were a few feet above the ocean. They could see their reflections in the crystal blue water. The moon reflected off of the water and the stars twinkle brightly above them.
May looks up at the starry night sky. "This is what I've wanted to see."
Drew looked at her. "What do you mean?"
"You asked me out on a nighttime carpet ride. And I've always liked staring up at the stars. It's so peaceful at night and...so beautiful…"
"I only know of one person who's more beautiful than the stars…" Drew said.
May looked at him. After a moment, she blushed. She started eating more strawberries while looking up at the stars.
Drew joined her in eating and viewing the stars. "A spark."
May looked at him in confusion. "A spark?"
Drew looked at her. "I didn't mention this yet, but...the reason I was late to Bellossom Fields was because Gabriella came to me and...kissed me."
May's eyes widened. "S-she...k-kissed…"
"Sorry again." Drew said. "I didn't want her to. Really I didn't. The reason I mentioned a spark was because I didn't feel one. When two people are meant to be together, don't they feel some sort of connection, a spark, go off inside of them?"
"Yeah…"
"Well, I didn't feel one with Gabriella. That's when I knew that you must've been telling the truth. That we really are together. And so, at Bellossom Fields, I kissed you to see if I'd feel the spark. And I did. That's when I started remembering our special times together."
"Wow…" May breathed.
"You aren't mad at me for when Gabriella kissed me, right?"
"Of course not. You were under a spell and she kissed you. If you weren't under a spell and she kissed you, I still wouldn't be mad at you if I saw you trying to push her away. If you kissed her, that's when I'll be mad."
"Noted." Drew said.
They looked back up at the stars. Cue the music.
(This song is "Beautiful Life" from Abominable.)
"I was lost, but you found me." May sang. Drew looked at her. "Hiding in the shadows from my destiny." May looked at Drew. "And you saw things that no one else could see. You saved me when I was my worst enemy." Drew smiled.
May returned the smile and continued. "It feels so good to be alive. Just you and me tonight. Don't wake me up from this carpet date ride. What a beautiful life." May reached out and took Drew's hand. They continue staring into each other's eyes. "I heard your heart call mine. And then all the stars aligned. Don't wake me up from this carpet date ride. What a beautiful life."
The heart jewel in May's scepter glowed pink. The magic carpet slowly started moving above the water. May and Drew both looked up at the sky as they fly.
"Spread through me like a wild flame." May sang. "I feel it in my veins." The carpet started flying higher. "I'll never ever be the same. I'll never be the same. Cheers to the thing money can't buy. Can't buy what I feel inside." May and Drew look into each other's eyes. "This thing, I can't deny. Happy little paradise."
"It feels so good to be alive." May sang as they soar through the night sky. "Just you and me tonight. Don't wake me up from this carpet date ride. What a beautiful life. I heard your heart call mine. And then all the stars aligned. Don't wake me up from this carpet date ride. What a beautiful life."
They're flying over Petalburg City. The city is illuminated in lights. May and Drew look down at the city. "What a beautiful life." May sang.
Drew looked at May and stared into her eyes from the side angle that he's at. "What a beautiful," May continued. "What a beautiful, what a beautiful life." May looked at Drew. "What a beautiful, what a beautiful, what a beautiful life."
"What a beautiful, what a beautiful, what a beautiful life." May sang again. "What a beautiful, what a beautiful, what a beautiful life. It feels so good to be alive. Just you and me tonight. Don't wake me up from this carpet date ride. What a beautiful life. I heard your heart call mine. And then all the stars aligned. Don't wake me up from this carpet date ride. What a beautiful life." May sang, finishing the song.
The carpet started flying them back to the castle.
"I really can't stay mad at you for kissing Gabriella." May said. "You were spelled, so it wasn't your fault. And so...I completely accept your apology. I'm just glad you kept your promise of this date."
"There's no way I wasn't going to take you on a magic carpet ride date like I promised." Drew said. "And…" Drew looked at their connecting hands and he tightened his grip on her hand. "I'll have a very special surprise for you on Valentine's Day."
May gasped. "You will?" She asked excitedly.
Drew looked up and stared into May's eyes. ("I plan on being with her for the rest of my life. She's the only one that stole my heart. And so...Valentine's Day is the day I'll do it. I'll let her know that I want to be hers for the rest of our lives. And hopefully she'll feel the same.")
"Of course." Drew answered May.
"Ooh! Can you give me a hint as to what it is?" May asked.
"Sorry, May." Drew said. "My lips are sealed."
May pouted.
"Cute." Drew said. "But I'm not saying anything as to what the surprise is."
"But how about at least one teeny tiny hint?"
"Fine." Drew said. May smiled. "The surprise is on Valentine's Day."
May pouted again. "That's not a hint."
"Alright fine." Drew said. "Your pouty face might be working on me."
May smiled. "So, what's the real hint?"
"Hmm...it's small, but it's a hint." Drew said. "The surprise will possibly cost a lot of money."
"Ooh...expensive...I wonder what it could be."
