Chapter 41
AN: Thank you so much for the support. I REALLY REALLY hope you like this chapter. PLEASE let me know what you think.
A few days have passed since Addison and Derek told Owen, and by extension, the entire Hospital, about the Sheplets, and as it has only been a few days everyone is still talking about it. It is the morning of Valentine's day and Addison, Derek, Zola, Amelia, and Teddy are all in the kitchen eating breakfast together.
"So, are you sure that you're okay looking after Zola? That you are both okay?" Addison says, as she looks between Amelia and Teddy as the two of them are going to be looking after Zola.
"Oh my god, Addison, I've told you I am happy to look after Zo-Zo," Amelia explains, pulling faces at Zola as she speaks.
"And after the last few months this is the only thing I want to do Valentines day," Teddy admits, as even though she knows she is going to think of Henry being with Zola and Amelia will make it hurt a little less.
"Thank you," Derek says gratefully.
"Excuse me," Addison says hurrying out of the room as she is still feeling a little nauseous, and everyone, including Zola, watches her go.
"So, what is your big plan?" Amelia asks, leaning forward, and asking in a quiet voice, as she has wanted to know for days what her brother is planning as she knows he has planned something big.
"I've booked us a late dinner at the Italian Restaurant Addie loves, and I have a hotel suite at the Archfield, with breakfast tomorrow morning, booked for us," Derek explains, as he plans to go check into the hotel during his lunch break and take the bags he packed and stashed in the car while Addison was in the shower. "I though that this might be one of our last chances to have a night just the two of us before the Sheplets, where Addie actually feels like she can enjoy herself," Derek admits.
"Probably," Amelia admits.
"That sounds like a really good plan, really romantic," Teddy admits.
"You're doing good for once," Amelia informs her brother.
"Thanks Amy," Derek responds sarcastically, and as he does Addison walks back in, and so he walks over to her. "You okay?" Derek asks concerned.
"Yeah, I was hoping the nausea would be gone by now," Addison admits.
"Hopefully it will stop soon," Derek says as he pushes Addison's hair out of her face, and puts her arms around her.
"Hopefully," Addison says as she leans into Derek's arms.
A while later Addison, Derek, Zola, Amelia and Teddy have all travelled to the hospital, but because of Derek and Addison's Halloween plans the two of them and Zola travelled together in one car while Amelia and Teddy travelled in another.
As they walk into the hospital Amelia and Teddy are walking behind Callie, Arizona, Mark, and Sofia who are also walking into the hospital; the three adults are clearly in the middle of a conversation.
"Oh come on, Mark, it's your turn," Callie argues, sounding annoyed.
"No. I said weeks ago that I couldn't look after Sofia on Valentine's Day," Mark responds, sounding just as annoyed.
"You did not!" Arizona argues, even though she is nervous about whatever surprise Callie has planned.
"I did!" Mark argues. "And I have made plans," Mark explains.
"Well so have we! and I'm not going to cancel them," Callie argues.
"Neither a I," Mark responds.
"Oh my god," Amelia says, not being able to stay quiet any longer, and the three attendings turn to look at her. "Teddy and I are looking after Zola tonight so will happily look after Sofia too," Amelia tells the three Attendings.
"Done," Mark says, without hesitation, as he trusts Amelia and Teddy.
"Are you sure?" Callie asks, wanting to be sure, as she looks between Amelia and Teddy.
"Completely," Amelia says.
"Really?" Arizona asks, looking at Teddy as she knows it is likely going to be difficult for her.
"Really," Teddy confirms.
"Great, done, thank you, we'll tell the Daycare that you'll be picking up Sofia," Mark says, looking incredibly grateful. "You like the sound of that Sofia, spending the nigh with Aunty Amelia, and Aunty Teddy and Zola?" Mark asks his daughter and Sofia just babbles.
"It's no problem, we're happy to do it," Amelia says, amused by Mark.
"Thank you," Callie says, also gratefully.
"We should get Little Miss to daycare," Arizona realizes. "Thank you," She says to Amelia and Teddy before she, Mark, and Callie walk away.
"Well I guess we get to look after the kids so everyone else can get laid," Amelia jokes.
"We're doing a public service," Teddy says, with a laugh.
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean we don't get to enjoy ourselves," Amelia says. "Once we get the kids lets get French take out and have a good night; even if it is with two one-year old's," Amelia suggests as she knows that both she and Teddy love French Food.
"Sounds good to me," Teddy confirms as the pair continue to walk together, finding herself looking forward to her evening.
A couple of hours later Teddy is focusing on her evening plans even more as after a Car Crashed through the ER she is in the OR with Owen, Cristina and Intern Steve. Due to what has been going on with them lately things are incredibly awkward in the OR.
"So, anyone got any good Valentine's plans?" Steve asks, as he can't stand the awkwardness any longer and not realizing that he is going to make things so much worse.
"My Husband died in this OR two months ago," Teddy says. "Doctor Yang performed the surgery. I was in a seven hour surgery and didn't know that he died," Teddy explains. "Doctor Hunt kept that a secret. So, I don't speak to him," Teddy says, like it is a simple thing. "He wants a baby. Doctor Yang doesn't so they don't speak to each other even though they are married," Teddy explains. "So… no. how about you?" Teddy asks.
"Um my girlfriend and I are gonna…" Steve starts to say, but then he receives three less than impressed looks. "Nothing," Steve quickly says.
A couple of hours after things in the OR with Teddy and Owen got incredibly awkward, Addison, who thought she may be leaving just in time to meet with Derek, was rounding on her patients when she got paged by Bailey.
"Miranda. What do you need?" Addison asks, as she walks up to where Bailey and Meredith are.
"We have a patient. Janell, her labs show she has a teratoma," Bailey explains, handing the file over to Addison so she can have a look. "Her scans and ultrasound are clean. We think it's a NMDA receptor teratomas," Bailey explains.
"Which are most commonly found on the ovaries," Addison knows, reading the file.
"We think it's microscopic and she's 21 so we want to preserve fatality," Meredith informs Addison.
"I understand," Addison says. "I'll meet you in the OR. I have to do something first," Addison explains, handing the file back to Bailey.
"Of course," Bailey says and Addison walks away from them as she knows she has to talk to Derek before going into surgery.
After a little bit of searching, and checking the OR board, Addison finds Derek in the Attendings lounge working on paperwork.
"Derek," Addison says, as she walks in into the lounge.
"Hey, are you finished up for the day?" Derek asks curious.
"Not quiet," Addison admits. "I've got to go into surgery with Meredith and Bailey," Addison explains. "It shouldn't be longer than a couple of hours," Addison explains to Derek.
"Okay," Derek says, as this was exactly why he made the reservation for late. "We can meet at the third-floor nurses station at eight thirty," Derek suggests.
"Sounds good," Addison says, and she bends down and kisses Derek. "I'll see you then," Addison says, as they break apart, and she heads to the door.
"Addie," Derek says, and Addison turns to look at him. "It's a beautiful day to save lives," Derek tells her.
"Yeah, it is," Addison says with a smile, and she heads out of the Attendings Lounge.
As Addison is on her way to Surgery Teddy and Owen have finished their surgery and having just checked on the patient the two of them are heading out of the room.
"Can we just talk for a minute?" Owen asks as he follows Teddy and not only does Teddy have no interest in talking to him, she knows she has to meet Amelia and collect the girls from daycare. "I know you've been through hell, and I know I was part of it. And I know you're grieving, and there's no magic solution to that, but… we used to be friends. and I really, really need a friend today," Owen admits. "So how about we just go across the street to Joe's and I'll buy you a drink, you know? Or I will by you many, many drinks," Owen offers.
"Are you done? Are you finished?" Teddy asks, her voice both angry and upset.
"Yes," Owen answers.
"I hate you," Teddy says simply. "From the moment you decided to put the needs of your hospital over my dead husband, I have hated you," Teddy reveals. "I lay in my bed at the Montgomery-Shepherd house because I can't bare to be in my apartment because all I saw in that place is where my husband should," Teddy admits. "And I actively… with every cell in my body, hate you," Teddy says. "I wish you were dead instead of him. I think about all the soldiers, good men, who died over there in Iraq, and I don't understand what kind of God would allow you to survive," Teddy says. "We're not friends. This is not grief. It will not pass. I hate you!" Teddy exclaims. "Please, don't speak to me again unless it's work related," Teddy says, walking away from Owen and to Amelia who is standing at the end of the hallway holding both Zola and Sofia, one in each arm, clearly having heard every word.
"Um… you okay there?" Amelia asks concerned.
"I don't want to talk about it right now," Teddy admits. "Hey Zo-Zo," Teddy says as she takes Zola from Amelia.
"Okay, foods ready to be picked up if you're ready to go," Amelia explains, knowing she will talk to Teddy about what happened later.
"Yeah, I am," Teddy confirms, and the two of them walk together, with the girls, to collect their stuff.
Not long after she talked to Derek Addison is in surgery with Bailey and Meredith, the three of them are looking at the ovaries.
"The tumor is definitely microscopic, there's no indications of a tumor on either ovary," Addison explains.
"The right overly has a lot of adhesions on it, that could mean inflammation. Which could mean a teratoma," Meredith says.
"it could also mean a number of other conditions including endometriosis," Addison argues, not being convinced that the signs Meredith pointed out means a Teratoma.
"It's the better choice, you should remove it," Meredith tells Addison.
"No," Addison responds, as she lets go of her instruments and starts to feel along both the ovaries.
"You can't just do nothing!" Meredith explains.
"Shut up, I'm not doing nothing," Addison responds, and she closes her eyes to feel, and even hear, properly. "I'm removing the left," Addison says, opening her eyes.
"Doctor Montgomery I'm not sure that's a good idea… the right," Meredith says.
"Doctor Grey I am the OB with over fifteen years' experience," Addison reminds her. "I have operated on countless overfires and what I am feeling, what I am seeing, what all the results are showing, and what my experience is telling me is that the left option is the most likely option," Addison explains.
"Then remove the left, Doctor Montgomery," Bailey says and Addison gets to work. Even though there is a lot more that she would like to say Meredith keeps her mouth shut and watches as Addison operates.
A little while later Addison's surgery has finished, and it turns out she was right about the teratoma, and so she has gotten changed, headed straight to the nurses station where Derek is waiting.
"Hey," Addison says, walking over to Derek.
"Hey," Derek says, pulling her in for a kiss. "How'd surgery go?" Derek asks curious, once they break apart.
"Good," Addison responds. "We removed the Teratoma and only had to remove one ovary so we have preserved fertility," Addison explains.
"That's good," Derek says, as they walk towards the elevator, Derek putting his arm around Addison as they do.
"So, are you going to tell me what this surprise is?" Addison asks curious.
"Nope, you're just going to have to see," Derek says, with a smirk.
"That is a worrying look Derek Shepherd," Addison says amused, and slightly concerned, as the two of them walk into the elevator.
While Addison and Derek are heading off to their dinner Amelia and Teddy are at the Montgomery-Shepherd house having just finished theirs. While Zola and Sofia are playing together Amelia and Teddy are sitting and watching them.
"Do you think they even realize everything that's going on around them?" Teddy asks curious.
"I don't know, maybe," Amelia admits. "That seemed like an intense conversation between you and Owen," Amelia comments, having never been one to beat around the bushes.
"He just makes me so angry," Teddy admits. "I know what I said was harsh, and mean, but I just can't imagine forgiving him; not right now anyway," Teddy explains. "And I don't understand how he can think I would just be fine to get a drink with him," Teddy admits.
"You know I never imagined my brother would ever forgive me for all the crap I pulled," Amelia admits. "But someone he did," Amelia says, honestly not quite sure how he did. "Look Teddy, Owen's your brother, and right now I think he's struggling so he needs hope that things are okay between you, but that doesn't mean it has to be," Amelia assures her friend. "You have every right to hate him, to be pissed as hell at him, and that hate can, and will, last as long as you need it to," Amelia admits. "But one day, not today, maybe not this month or year, one day, you might find yourself wanting your brother back; so maybe keep that in the back of your mind," Amelia suggests.
"Maybe," Teddy says, as she rests her head on Amelia's shoulder, and Amelia puts an arm around her, and the two of them drift into silence as they watch Zola and Sofia play together.
A little while after they left the hospital Derek and Addison are finishing their dinner, at a restaurant that Addison loves.
"This is incredible," Addison says amazed. "How did you get a reservation here?" Addison asks, sounding amazed.
"I booked it over a month ago," Derek reveals.
"Really?" Addison asks, and Derek nods.
"I know we have Zola, and the Sheplets on the way, and we're busy people, but I never want that to be an excuse to get complacence or indifferent, not again," Derek tells Addison, as he reaches over and takes Addison's hand.
"I don't either," Addison confirms. "Speaking of our incredible little girl, do you think she's okay with Amelia and Teddy?" Addison asks, as while she loves, and trusts, them both she is worried about her little girl.
"I think she is beyond okay, I think she is loving her time with Aunty Amy and Aunty Teddy and cousin Sofia," Derek admits, knowing that Teddy and Amelia are also looking after Sofia thanks to Mark. "But if you're really worried, we can go home instead of the hotel," Derek offers, wanting to do what Addison wants even if it's not what he has planned.
"Let's go to the hotel," Addison says, after a few moments of debating, and Derek squeezes her hand.
"Okay," Derek responds, and even though he is also wondering how his daughter is he knows he is going to make this night as amazing as possible for Addison.
Six days have passed since Valentine's day and the whispers about Addison and Derek having triplets have finally started to die down. It is early morning and Addison, Derek, Amelia, Teddy and Zola have arrived at the hospital and together they are walking towards the building, Addison being the one who is holding Zola.
"So, Owen is sticking to letting Cristina stay on your service?" Amelia asks Teddy curious.
"Yep, thankfully," Teddy confirms.
"Addison," A voice says and the foursome turn around to see a person who looks pretty shocked.
"Sam," Addison says, sounding just as shocked as Sam looks.
