Entry 63: 7.17.80 "A Day Off"
We don't exactly get a lot of days off in the vault. Don't get me wrong, it isn't like any of us are doing intense physical labor-so none of us are really exhausted or anything-but we just don't get time off. There's always something to do. I'm relatively lucky, I only really work two days a week (barring all the religious "emergencies" that I tend to) but a lot of others only get two days off.
During the summer it was always nice to enjoy the warm weather and not having to be stuffed in a classroom for a few months. I only worked the summer right before the bombs fell, but it wasn't too bad. Douglassville wasn't big enough to have a proper mall or shopping center, we had a handful of small stores along Main Street, but we did have the homestead. Douglassville is the home of Daniel Boone, the folk hero who crossed the untamed wilderness of our once great country and helped settle Kentucky. I got lucky enough to get a job working at the homestead instead of being stuck working retail like Andy or Joe.
The homestead itself wasn't particularly large or impressive, but because it's a historical site-well, it was one at least-there were always more people working there than necessary. Apparently one year back in the 40s they got a bit extra funding and always kept a random teenager around in the summer to justify the extra expense (most of it actually went to my boss Dan's gambling habit, but I still made decent money). It meant that all I had to do was occasionally give tours and make sure everything was clean. The office had a terminal and a stash of old games, so I kept busy. I wonder what happened to it with the bombs? I imagine the building is still there, but I bet the robots probably went haywire without maintenance for three years. In any case, we won't find out until we get to the surface.
