Shoutout to my friend for the idea to have Hiccup exposed to "adulting is hard tm" (her words lol)

Entry 31

A spring snowstorm has seriously messed things up.

It's well into May, and for the last couple weeks, there's been quite a lot of plant life coming back on Berk. Not that Berk has a whole lot of plants other than trees and grass, but we have a couple crops that we rely on aside from trade. Specifically, a decent plot of wheat and barley. And, just as those crops were beginning to come to life, we woke up this morning to find the land covered in white, blown by winds so strong you can hardly see your hand in front of your eyes.

My dad said this has happened once before, before I was born, and that that year, Berk struggled to stay alive. And now, he's absolutely losing it to stress.

We're both sitting in the main room of our house, huddled around the hearth, and I can tell simply by looking at him that he's freaking out. Thor, he isn't even focused enough to question what I'm doing in this book. But honestly, this is all starting to freak me out too.

I've never seen my dad so worried about the wellbeing of the village, because he always has such a good handle on things. Even when the dragons raid us, he's always clear in how we're going to move forward. But right now, he seems to be at a loss on how to help our people… And frankly, it terrifies me, as the heir to the chiefdom.

Is this what leading is really like? Will I be stressed out like this too? I mean, that's assuming I actually do get to keep my birthright… But still, I am TOTALLY not ready to deal with situations like this. I bet if I ever have to face a life threatening scenario, I'll be an absolute mess. I'll be the person who flees, while everyone else tries to fight… My dad has NOT prepared me for stuff like this…

Here's to hoping he can figure it all out, and keep Berk going.

Until next time…

I grew up in the northern States, and I think the most akin situation to this i can remember is when we had an ice storm in late april 2013, and it shut down the city for a week. Trees and powerlines were down everywhere, roads were practically impassable, school was closed. The scariest moments I remember were when a tree fell on our neighbors house, when a big branch fell in our backyard and snapped the cable line to our house, or when I lost my favorite climbing tree and it destroyed our fence... winter weather be freaky sometimes haha
