Dark Kingdom 42
"Do you want to go home?"
Usagi shook her head.
Only now did she gradually realize what had actually happened. And over and over again she saw Mamoru's face.
How cold his eyes were. Completely without feeling or emotion, like a machine.
She had barely noticed how Diamond had put her in his limo.
How long have they been on the road now?
She was cold. She felt her teeth clash.
Diamond sat next to her, but kept the necessary distance. He rustled something. Usagi had no energy to get to the bottom of the noise, but noticed that he had probably taken off his jacket because he was now putting it around her shoulders.
Grateful, she smiled timidly, but immediately turned her gaze out of the side window. She watched vaguely as the colored lights of the many neon signs moved past her.
"Would you like something to drink?" , Diamond asked her again. "Or are you hungry? I usually always have a couple of candy bars in here."
"Thank you, it's okay."
She looked around wearily. It was the first time she had sat in a limo. Actually, she should have enjoyed it, squeaked with joy and just enjoyed the enormous luxury. Instead she sat like a pile of misery in the soft leather seats and could only think of what Mamoru was doing.
It was so ridiculous. He had betrayed her and she wondered if he was okay.
"Has he done anything to you?", Diamond asked, genuine concern in his voice.
Usagi first had to think about what he meant, until she realized that the old man was meant earlier. The man Mamoru shot. In cold blood.
She shook her head, looked at her wrists, where the marks of the ankles were still visible as red welts.
Diamond moved up a little.
"I'm sorry we were so late getting to you. My people informed me too late and..."
"Are you having me monitored?", she interrupted in surprise.
Diamond just nodded and only continued to speak when he discovered the questioning expression on her face: "so that something like this just doesn't happen. I just wouldn't have suspected that you were so much the focus. You have probably been seen with Mamoru one too many times."
Usagi shook her head: "It was about you. This guy thought I had something to do with you. He asked me about a villa."
"That's not so good.", Diamond stroked his chin thoughtfully, staring at some imaginary point in front of him. "I will let Mamoru know that he better keep you out of the line of fire."
"No!"
Usagi bit her lower lip when the other person looked at her with raised eyebrows and quickly added: "You really don't need that."
"I think that .."
"He doesn't want anything to do with me. He has expressly given me to understand.", she explained dryly.
"Are you sure?" Diamond seemed genuinely baffled. "After all, it was he who practically forced me to get you out of there."
Usagi stared at him, confused. She understood his words, but couldn't interpret them.
"This guy was the head of a rival Yakuza clan." , Diamond explained as he poured himself a glass of red wine in a way that could hardly be surpassed in decadence. "And he was right when he said his death could cause problems. However, he also had far more enemies than friends, so people will be more grateful to me."
He took a long swig from his glass before he continued:
"But what I really want to say is that Mamoru would not have cared if he had to kill the emperor of Japan just to save you. So he certainly does care about you."
"Then why is he only introducing me to others as a friend? ", Usagi asked in a whisper, looking thoughtfully at her hands that were resting in her lap. The memory of the situation in Mamoru's apartment pained her.
"He'll have his reasons. He may still be unsure whether you really want to be with him."
"But .." she began, but was gently interrupted when Diamond raised his finger, smiling.
"You remember when I told you earlier to close your eyes? If you really want to become a part of his life, you mustn't close your eyes. You have to accept him for who he is. Also his unfeeling side as a killer. Do you think you can do that?"
Usagi just nodded silently.
Diamond looked at her intently for a few seconds before picking up a connected phone. It was probably the connection to the driver, who was separated by a dark pane.
"To the Black Moon." , he just said and then hung up again before turning to her again. "I will see if you are really ready to become part of our world."
She couldn't read his gaze, but an ice-cold shiver ran down her spine at his words.
