For the one guy who said he wanted to see where this would go

Toothless was jolted awake by his senses.

It was still dark, but the sun would be up in a matter of minutes. He looked under his wing, confirming that hiccup was still there and unharmed.

With that settled, he looked around him for the reason of the disturbance. He couldn't see anything, but his swiveling ears soon picked up the strange sound that had awakened him.

In the distance, toward the rising sun, a low rumble could be heard. Toothless gently stood and looked in the direction of the sound, and noticed an unnatural glow in the dark, aside from the sun which was visibly breaking over the horizon. He stood like a statue, unmoving as the sound slowly grew. Then, when the light had crested the horizon and stretched over the land in a pale glow, he saw them. The sound increased in pitch and volume, and in the distance darks spots appeared in the sky. Toothless's eyes widened as the number of flying objects steadily increased, covering the morning horizon.

And headed right for them.

Toothless josteled hiccup awake, leaving him blinking in confusion. When he fully woke up he saw toothless's behavior and heard the wavering drone in the distance that was growing steadily nearer. Hiccup saw the things in the sky, then looked at toothless, who only returned his worried gaze. Hiccup grabbed the saddle and hoisted it onto his back, unsure of weather to run or stay put. Toothless began to pace, growling at the things, which were almost overhead. The shadows of them began to pass over the pair before the actual objects themselves, and hiccup made his decision.

"Get down, try not to let them see you."

Both rider and dragon dropped into the grass, and lay facing the sky as the formations began to pass over them. Hiccup could only stare in wonder. He had assumed them to be some kind of dragon, given their size, but the things up there were too stiff in their flight. They flew at a brisk pace, without flapping their wings, and they were too uniform in size and shape, too exact, too unnatural looking to be living creatures. The way the light shone off their dulled underbellies confirmed hiccups growing suspicion that these things were made of metal.

They weren't alive, they weren't natural, they were machines. "But how?" hiccup muttered to himself, "this is impossible, nobody can build things like this." he turned to toothless, also gazing upward. "Are you seeing this too bud?"

Although toothless couldn't talk, it was clear that the dragon beside him was questioning his own sanity as well. As the things droned on, hiccup couldn't help but think of his blueprints of a flying contraption that he hoped to build one day, a glider that would let him fly alongside toothless in the sky. But this, these machines blew his mind. the machines continued for another minute until they were gone. Hiccup stood and watched as they flew away into the distance. Toothless stood beside him, the rising sun to their backs. Hiccup looked at the dragon.

"Well. one things for sure. We're not in the archipelago anymore."

With the sun up, they were able to get a better stock of their surroundings. In the distance was a small patch of trees.

Hiccup decided it would be best to take cover until night, so they started in that direction. Their injuries were now crusty scabs over the raw flesh, and weren't as painful as before. Due to the appearance of the strange machines, hiccup was keen to get out of sight as soon as possible, before they came back.

When toothless stopped, pricked his ears and looked off to the east again, hiccup feared the worst. Toothless gave a worried growel, his better ears and eye sight allowing him to see what hiccup couldn't. Hiccup already suspected what the problem was, when he heard the distant droning sound. He picked up his pace as, in the distance, another flying machine was spotted.

They began to run as it came at them, much smaller and faster than the others.

It knew where they were.

Toothless scooped hiccup up onto his back and ran for the trees that were still so far away.

The machine turned on its path and followed them. It circled above as toothless charged through the grass. Hiccup held on tight, but couldn't help staring as it circled them.

Toothless tripped in a gully that had been hidden in the grass, but was back up in an instant. The woods were getting closer, they could see the individual trees. The machine dove at them, roared low over their heads. Toothless put on an incredible burst of speed, his feet pounding on the ground. Blood ran like sweat from their disturbed burns, but it didn't slow them down. The woods were so close now, mere seconds away.

Suddenly, toothless broke out of the tall grass. He made an awful sound of surprise and pain, crashing through a barrier, sending hiccup flying from his back.

When hiccup stood, he saw toothless lying in a heap, wrapped tight in a steel wire, covered in barbs. As the machine made another low pass, toothless threw himself to his feet, shaking off the barbed wire that had caught his legs and chest. He was cut up, but unfazed as he grabbed hiccup and limped into the trees.

Hiccup didn't even stop to see if the dragon was alright, he freed himself from toothless's jaws and led him through the short trees. There wasn't much to this forest, it was more like a woodlot. Nonetheless, he found a small pit by the roots of an overturned tree, and together they hunkered down, waiting.

The machine roared over the tree tops for several minutes, sometimes getting closer, other times fading into the distance. They couldn't see it, but whenever it thundered over head it's shadow passed through the trees. Hiccup sat still, looking at toothless with worry. The dragon's head and ears were swiveling back and forth, a low growl in his throat. They sat there for longer still, the machine continuing it's patrol. Finally, after half an hour, it left. Hiccup stood, looking around.

"You think it's gone?" he asked. Toothless warbled. then hiccup heard a new sound. Multiple rumbling sources, sticks breaking, people shouting. Toothless growled. The sounds completely surrounded the woods. They were trapped. Toothless stood on three legs, looking at hiccup. His big green eyes were wide with worry. In the distance of the trees hiccup saw people moving. He sat back down, letting out a shaky breath. His heart raced and his throat burned. Toothless wined, looking back and forth between him and the people advancing towards their hiding spot. He barked at his human, wondering what to do. Hiccup shook his head.

"Wait for them to come to us, don't be hostile."

Toothless looked unsure. But as the strange men closed in, he whimpered and layed down, curling protectively around his rider. They waited as the searchers grew closer, nerves tight as a harp. Hiccup laid his hand on toothless's head, partially to calm the dragon, mostly to calm himself. As the people drew closer he separated himself from toothless, wanting to speak with them, to shield toothless. The dragon didn't approve, but had no choice.

As the first man came through the trees hiccup threw up his arms in surrender. The man saw him, and pointed a, what hiccup could only assume was a weapon, at him, shouting something in a strange language. Toothless growled, standing behind his human. The man took a step back, now pointing his weapon at toothless. More of them came through the trees, surrounding them, shouting, pointing weapons at him and toothless. Hiccup tried to talk to them, but didn't understand their language. Toothless was getting more and more agitated, still standing on three legs and limping from the injuries he had received. the dragon snarled at them and tried to shield his rider. Hiccup didn't know what to do. He squeezed his eyes shut as all the commotion drummed in his ears.

Then the first good thing happened that day. Something clicked, and the men's foriegn shouting turned into words.

"Make your beast calm down or we will shoot! Do you understand, we will kill it."

"Don't shoot, don't shoot!" hiccup cried, "toothless, calm down bud, it's alright, calm down."

Toothless stopped snarling, but still glared. There was a tense moment of silence, before one of the men stepped up.

"Who are you, what is that, and why are you here?"

Hiccup shook his head.

"Honestly, i have no idea where i am. Please, don't hurt toothless, he's my dragon and he's not hostile. Hes just frightened."

The man looked unsure. Another man stepped up to the first.

"Should we just shoot it sir? It looks dangerous to me."

The first man held up his hand.

"Nobody asked you." Then to hiccup he said, "Kid, you're coming with us. Your dragon is too, dead or alive. Keep him calm and we won't destroy it. Understood?"

Hiccup nodded, keeping his hands up.

They were led out of the woods into an open field. Several machines were standing in the shortened grass. They were called 'trucks' and 'jeeps'. Hiccup was told to climb in.

The men looked unsure, but toothless refused to be separated from his human, and scrambled up to join him. He laid on the floor as the uniformed men lined the benches around him. The truck began to move, pulling out into a convoy. Behind it a jeep followed, several men with their weapons at the ready.

The men talked in hushed tones, all in disbelief and wondernment at their find. Hiccup could only watch in wonder.

The men were all dressed in a uniform way, green clothing and steel headpieces. They carried the same weapons, and were all clean shaven. The truck moved faster than anything else hiccup had ridden on while grounded, and the strange countryside rolled by. There were few hills, the grass was tall, and no ocean was in sight. It was extremely hot here, and hiccup found himself sweating profusely.

It occurred to him that he and toothless were taking this rather well, this alien world with strange people and contraptions. He almost felt wrong for not freaking out, but, despite his fear of what was going to happen, he didn't panic. Instead he laid his hand reassuringly on toothless's head, watching the foriegn countryside move past as they rode to whatever fate held in store.
