Chapter 43
AN: I really hope you like this chapter. Thank you for an incredible response to the last chapter. PELASE let me know what you think. (Sorry its so late, I was distracted by Sims.)
Twelve days have passed since Sam came to Seattle, and a month has passed since Addison and Derek put in an offer on their dream house. To the relief of Addison, Derek, and everyone in their family Sam's visit hasn't seem to changed things between Addison and Derek, if anything things seem to have become stronger.
It's early morning and in a way that has become an easy routine for Addison, Derek, Zola, Amelia and Teddy they are all in the kitchen of their house. As Addison is taking dishes to the dishwasher, Teddy cleans up Zola and hands her to Derek, while Amelia cleans up the food, and as she does the phone rings.
"I've got it," Addison says, as she is closest. "Doctor Montgomery," Addison answers. "Yes? Really?" Addison asks, and everyone can hear the excitement in her voice.
"What's going on?" Derek asks in a quiet voice, as Addison gives Derek a look which says she'll explain when she can.
"Yes, we can do that," Addison confirms, "We'll see you then," Addison says, before hanging up.
"Addie? What is it?" Derek asks.
"We got the house," Addison says with a hug grin.
"We got the house?" Derek asks, sounding disbelieving.
"We got the house," Addison confirms, and once she does she and Derek kiss and hug.
"Uh guys, I'm happy too, but you're squishing my niece," Amelia says, and Derek and Addison break apart.
"Congratulations," Teddy says, clearly meaning it.
"Sorry Zo-Zo," Derek says to his daughter.
"Thanks Teddy," Derek says, as he grins from ear to ear as he really loved the Lake House and he is so glad that it is going to be his and Addison's.
"They want to see us at six tonight to sign the papers," Addison explains.
"I can get Zola if you guys don't want her to come to the Lake house," Amelia offers.
"That would probably be good, thanks Amy," Derek says, gratefully, as he figures with all the paperwork they have to do it won't be good for Zola, and once he does the group continue with their morning routine.
A while later Addison, Derek, Amelia, Zola and Teddy have travelled to the hospital in Derek's car, as Addison's is at the hospital, and not long after they go to the hospital they were all paged to the pit because of a major trauma.
"What have we got?" Teddy asks, April, as she, Addison, Derek, and Amelia arrive in the pit.
"Neuro consults in trauma one, and two, cardio also in trauma two," April explains, knowing that plastics is in trauma one as well.
"HOW CAN YOU BE SO STUPID! YOU ARE A RESIDENT, THIS KIND OF MISTAKE IS NOT OKAY," Owen's voice echoes throughout the ER.
"Which trauma is Hunt in?" Teddy asks curious, as she really hopes it's not the one she has to work in.
"Two," April answers. "Doctor Montgomery you're needed in Bay 4," April explains.
"I'll take bay two," Amelia tells Derek.
"Thank you," Teddy say to Addison in a quiet voice, and both she and Amelia head to trauma two while Derek heads to trauma one, and Addison heads to bay four.
A while later, as they have dealt with their trauma, Amelia and Teddy are at lunch together.
"Okay, I know I've been around for like a year, but I've got to know, Is Hunt always such a dick?" Amelia asks curious, doing so for two reasons, the first is she wants an answer, but the second is that she wants to give Teddy a real opportunity to talk about Owen.
"He's in pain," Teddy admits. "As long as I have known him Owen wanted a family; he's dreamed of becoming a Dad since he was a kid," Teddy explains. "So even though he heled Cristina's hand during her abortion he's not okay with giving up his chance to be a father. He loves Cristina and he wants to be with her, but he also loves the idea of being a father; I think he's trying to figure out which he wants more. Which is what caused todays lovely mood," Teddy explains.
"Wow, you really know him," Amelia realizes.
"You said it yourself, he's my brother," Teddy admits.
"Weren't you in love with him once?" Amelia asks, interested.
"You know I've been thinking about that," Teddy admits. "Lat week Addie said that she knew that she and Derek should always be a couple, that their relationship now is what it always should be because its always been what feels right; that even when they were apart she would think of Derek as the love of her life," Teddy explains. "When she said that I couldn't help but think of Owen. He might always be the man who didn't tell me that my husband died; but he will always be my best friend," Teddy admits. "We've been through so much, and I realized that even when I thought I was in love with him I would think of him as my best friend; I think best friends is what we should be, nothing more," Teddy explains.
"Sounds to me that the day has come," Amelia says, knowing that Teddy will know what that means.
"Yeah," Teddy says, looking distracted. "I think about it," Teddy says, and once she does Mark, Addison, Derek, Callie, Arizona, Bailey, and Ben join them.
"Tip for you Hunt is on the warpath, avoid him if you can," Mark says, giving Teddy even more to think about.
A while later Teddy who has done a lot of thinking, is approaching the nurses station where Amelia is reading a file.
"Hey, you heading into surgery?" Teddy asks curious.
"Yep," Amelia confirms.
"Are you going to be okay to get Zola or do you want me to?" Teddy asks curious.
"I should be okay, but I'll let you know," Amelia responds, and as she does, she notices a brief look pass over Teddy's face, something she wouldn't have seen if she didn't know Teddy so well. "Everything okay?" Amelia asks curious.
"I'm about to go into Surgery with Owen, again, it shouldn't be long, but I was thinking I would suggest we go over to Joe's after and talk, or yell, whatever we need," Teddy explains. "But if you need me to get Zola and take her home I can," Teddy explains.
"No, it's okay, I'll work it out," Amelia says, as she knows it's important that Teddy and Owen talk.
"Amelia, no, I'm happy to get Zola," Teddy assures Amelia.
"Look, I'll get back to you, if you and Owen can talk then you should," Amelia admits, before closing her file and walking away.
While Amelia and Teddy are on their way to surgery Addison and Derek are both in the Attendings lounge, the two of them having just finished getting changed out of their scrubs.
"You ready for this?" Derek asks, walking towards Addison.
"Yeah, I'm not sure I believe this is actually happening," Addison says, sounding shocked. "Are we really doing this Derek? Are we buying our dream house for us and our family?" Addison asks, as she wouldn't be surprised if someone told her that this whole thing was a dream.
"Yeah, it is, Addie," Derek says, before kissing Addison. "Let's go get our home," Derek says, once they break apart, and the two of them head out of the attendings lounge, and the hospital, together, hand in hand.
After a complicated, but more than slightly awkward, surgery Teddy and Owen are in the scrub room scrubbing out when the door opens and Amelia walks in.
"Hey, your surgery's finished?" Teddy asks, seeing her.
"Yep, so I can get Zola and you can do what you need to do," Amelia tells her friend.
"I'm not really sure that's a good idea," Teddy admits, to Owen's confusion. "So give me a few minutes and I can help you get Zola," Teddy explains.
"Teddy…" Amelia starts to say, but then she realizes that she can't really say what she wants to say with Owen in the room, at least not in English. "At lunch you were sure that today is the day," Amelia says to Teddy in German as she knows that it is a language that the two of them speak, but Owen doesn't. "You said it yourself, he's your best friend, and it's your choice, whether you decide to hate him, or not is up to you, I'm not going to tell you what to do. What I am going to say is don't you owe it to yourself, especially after what you have realized, to see if you can," Amelia says.
"Okay, what's with the German?" Owen asks confused, not being able to say quiet any longer.
"You're right, thanks Melia," Teddy says to her friend, in English. "I'll see you at you at home," Teddy says.
"See you there, Goodluck," Amelia says, before heading out of the scrub room.
"What was that all about?" Owen asks curious.
"Are you busy right now?" Teddy asks curious.
"No," Owen says, sounding confused, feeling like he is missing something huge.
"Do you want to go to Joe's? Talk?" Teddy asks curious, half expecting Owen to say no.
"That'd be nice," Owen answers as the two of them finish scrubbing out.
A little while after they left the hospital Addison and Derek have travelled to the Lake House, their new home, and have signed the papers transferring ownership. As they have completed all the paperwork that needed to be completed, Addison is standing on the back deck staring out at their new view. As Addison stares out to the water Derek walks up and puts his arms around her, and she leans back against him.
"I love this view so much," Addison admits, as she feels Derek.
"More than your view in LA?" Derek asks curious.
"Yes, because it's ours," Addison explains.
"We've got our home, Addie," Derek says. "Which means we should start to plan things," Derek says to Addison in a gentle voice. "The Sheplets will be here before we know it," Derek tells Addison. "I was thinking the circular glass area off our room is where we can keep the bassinets and that they should all share a room until they are a little older," Derek tells Addison, doing so in a gentle voice as it's an practical, but important idea.
"That's a good idea," Addison says. "We need to talk to Amelia. She's okay looking Zola if something happens to us, but we need to make sure she is okay with taking the Sheplets too, it's a lot to ask," Addison says, and that is the furthest thing from what Derek was expecting them to talk about.
"Addie…" Derek says, honestly having no idea what to say, and Addison turns to look at him.
"Derek, delivery, no matter when it happens, is going to be incredibly hard; especially on me," Addison tells Derek, as she knows she has multiple factors that make her extremely high risk. "If something happens to me, I don't want you to shut people out, Derek. You will need people; our kids will need people; our family, both here and in New York," Addison reminds Derek. "Don't run," Addison almost begs, as she knows that's what Derek often does when he is in pain.
"Addie…" Derek starts to say, his voice breaking.
"Please Derek, if something happens to me it's important to me that you're okay," Addison admits.
"I won't be, but I'll try for our kids," Derek admits, before kissing Addison.
At Joe's Teddy and Owen have been at the bar for a little while and have a couple of drinks but haven't really gotten around to talking as neither are particularly sure how to start the conversation they need to have.
"So, you're still staying with Addison, Derek and Amelia?" Owen asks, feeling that it is a pretty safe way to start the conversation.
"Yeah," Teddy confirms. "I kind of love it. I don't know what will happen when they move to the lake house, but at the moment it is great," Teddy explains.
"Do you want to move with them to the lake house?" Owen asks curious.
"Kind of," Teddy admits. "it sounds much more appealing than going back to my apartment," Teddy explains, but she isn't sure how to bring it up with them.
"I'm really glad you have people who have been helping you; even though it couldn't be me," Owen admits.
"I was so angry at you, I still am in some ways," Teddy admits. "But Amelia, Addison, and Derek have made me realize that you're my oldest friend, my best friend, my brother; and as angry as I am, even though there have been a lot of days where I haven't been able to imagine forgiving you; I do miss our friendship and I do want It back," Teddy admits.
"I do too," Owen admits. "Because I really need a friend right now," Owen admits.
After spending a while at the Lake House, Addison and Derek are arriving at the house. Walking into the living room they find Amelia in the living room picking up toys.
"Hey, how'd signing the papers go?" Amelia asks curious.
"Good," Derek answers.
"Where's Zola?" Addison asks.
"I put her down about ten minutes ago," Amelia explains.
"I'm going to go check on her," Addison says, before heading upstairs.
"Everything okay?" Amelia asks her brother curious as she notices the way Derek watches Addison head upstairs.
"After we signed the papers Addie went out onto the back deck, I followed," Derek explains as he walks over to his sister. "I brought up how we should think about organizing things for the Sheplets now that we have the house. I meant buying stuff, and organizing rooms, but Addie brought up making sure you were okay with taking the Sheplets and Zola if something were to happen to us," Derek explains.
"Of course I am," Amelia says, as that has never been a question for her, though she hopes it will never get to that.
"Amy, I think Addie thinks something horrible is going to happen during this pregnancy," Derek admits, fear in his voice, as he isn't sure what to do.
"How much has Addie told you about what's happened in LA over the past few years?" Amelia asks, as she has a suspicion about why Addison is so paranoid.
"Bits a pieces," Derek admits. "Why?" Derek asks interested.
"There's been…. A lot of bad," Amelia admits. "Friend being attacked, and hurt, friends dying, not to mention everything connected to Addie's family," Amelia explains, not wanting to go into too many details as she feels like it's not her place. "You, Zola, the Sheplets, are what she wants more than anything so after everything that's happened, I think she's terrified, and can't let herself believe that things will be okay," Amelia admits. "Come on Derek, you're more fluent in Addie than me, behind her wasp exterior and the brilliant word class surgeon, what does Addie hide from everyone except those who truly know her?" Amelia asks her brother.
"Self-doubt," Derek answers, without thinking about it. "The fear that everything Bizzy and The Captain told her is true; that she would never be good enough or deserve good things to happen," Derek answers, knowing that even though it took him years to realize.
"Exactly," Amelia says. "Go," Amelia tells her brother as she can tell what he is thinking, and Derek heads upstairs.
Once he is upstairs Derek heads straight to Zola's room where he finds Addison standing by Zola's crib staring at their incredible daughter. Without a word Derek walks over and puts his arms around Addison's waist, as they both stare at their daughter.
"I don't want to miss a second of her life," Addison admits.
"You won't," Derek says.
"You can't promise that," Addison reminds Derek.
"No, I can't," Derek admits. "But what I do know is that you are Addison Montgomery, you are the most stubborn person I've ever met, and I know you don't want to leave our kids and that means you're going to fight as hard as you can to make sure you don't," Derek tells Addison, kissing her cheek, as they continue to watch their daughter.
A while after Addison and Derek got home Teddy arrives home and as the house is dark Teddy makes her way upstairs, and when she gets to the floor she shares with Amelia she sees light coming from Amelia's open door and so instead of going to her own room Teddy walks over to Amelia's.
"Hey," Teddy greats, from the doorway to Amelia's room.
"Hey, how were drinks with Owen?" Amelia asks curious.
"Good," Teddy admits, as she walks over, and sits down next to Amelia. "I'm glad to have my friend back, even if I may see Henry, and Owen lying about Henry, every time I look at him," Teddy admits.
"I'm happy for you," Amelia admits.
"How'd things go with Zola?" Teddy asks curious.
"Good, I think she loved being spoiled by her Aunty Amelia," Amelia says with a grin, and it is clear how much Amelia loves her niece. "Honestly, I'm worried about Addie," Amelia admits.
"Why? What's going on with Addie?" Teddy asks concerned, clearly worried about her friend.
"She's expecting something bad, something horrible, to happen during this pregnancy or delivery," Amelia admits. "After everything that has happened over the past few years, I'm not surprised, but I'm still worried about her," Amelia explains. "I don't know how to help her though," Amelia admits, sounding lost.
"There's only one thing you can do, and that's be there for her," Teddy admits. "You can't convince Addie that she has nothing to worry about because fear isn't rational," Teddy says, knowing that from experience. "Addie's strong, and smart, but that doesn't change fear. She know what to expect from a pregnancy like this and even if she tells us and Derek, everything we won't truly understand it because we haven't seen everything she has; which makes her fear even worse," Teddy tells her friend. "Addie just needs us to be there for her, support her, but not invalidate her fears. That's all we can do at the moment," Teddy admits.
"Then that's what we do," Amelia says, laying her head on Teddy's shoulder as the two of them drift into silence as they sit side by side, and as they do Teddy moves the blanket so that it is covering both of them.
