You won't cry for my absence, I know
You forgot me long ago
Am I that unimportant?
Am I so insignificant?
Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me?
Verse two of Missing by Evanescence. I try to blend the lyrics in with the story or at least reference them. Setting sometime after Davey's and calypso's failed meeting but before the movies.
Just another day on the sea, the sight of it reminds Davey of Calypso. Cruel irony he has to be reminded of her every second of every day. He had taken everything else that had to do with her and buried it along with his chest. Love letters, pearls and flowers all were buried. The only thing that was left was the locket the played their song. It was bittersweet. Davey would listen it to sometimes and think of better days. Davey knew the Calypso didn't cry for his absence. She forgot him a long time ago. How long has been now one hundred years, two hundred, or three hundred? He didn't know. He didn't care enough to keep track of the years. After a while everything just seems to blend together and he couldn't keep track of the time. All he knew was darkness now.
Davey remembered the day the darkness came. He died when Calypso didn't show up for their meeting. All the light left his soul that day. Ten years he devoted to the duty she charged him with. Ten years he ferried the souls of those who died at sea to the other side. Davey did all of it for her, so he could see her again. Davey remembered waiting on that beach, eager to see Calypso. All the work he put in, it was finally going to pay off. Davey waited on that beach for hours but she never came. It took a while for Davey to see she wasn't coming. He didn't want to believe that she would betray him. He didn't want to believe that she was capable of doing this to him. The very thought of it was revolting to him.
Eventually he had accepted that Calypso wasn't coming. Davey was consumed by rage and heartbreak. "Am I that unimportant? Am I that insignificant?" Davey asked himself that day. The light was gone from him but he didn't know it yet. The pain had cut into his very soul. It infected him like a virus. Davey didn't have a purpose anymore. He had done everything for his love and she had tricked him into serving her forever. There was no way he could be set free from his service. He went down on his knees on that beach and screamed to the heavens. A voice filled with pain and rage. Any who heard would have been chilled to the bone. It was pure agony for Davey to even exist. Everything was taken away from him.
Davey decided to carve out his heart right then and there. He couldn't live with this pain forever. It wasn't worth it to feel what small joy life brings if he had to feel this agony. Davey never regretted his choice since he was free from the pain. He was free to do as he liked. However, sometimes in the back of his mind a nagging voice would say "Isn't something missing? Isn't someone missing me?" Davey would never admit it but he still loved Caylspo after everything she did. His fate was sealed by her to walk in this darkness. Tomorrow he would have to get back to work but now he would listen to his locket and sleep.
