Chapter 43 - Legal Action

Guen was a bit nervous as he drove to pick up Keigo Monday morning. He had been driving Keigo back and forth on a regular basis for ten years and he had seen the young boy grow to a fine teenager. He had seen the winged hero in training tired, injured, scared, angry, excited, happy and even nervous. What Guen had never seen, until Friday afternoon, was Keigo looking spaced out and disoriented. He knew how the Commission normally treated its assets, and he was no stranger to the methods used to keep heroes in line at the Heroes Public Safety Commission. To his knowledge, Keigo was not being given those sorts of treatments and abuses. It was concerning to think they had waited until almost Keigo's last year with them, when he was a teenager, when he was at his prime for debut to do such things to him. The driver's thoughts were interrupted when he saw a young man with silver hair and hazel eyes standing at the doorway of the apartment building. He was wearing jeans with a black jacket and holding a folder in his arms. He looked similar to Soji Nakamura, only younger and with different colored eyes.

Nero Nakamura saw the driver and walked towards the car. Glancing around, Guen didn't see Azumi, Soji or Keigo and that concerned him. The young man grinned and tapped the front passenger window to get the driver's attention. Narrowing his eyes, Guen rolled the window down enough to hear the man talking, but not enough to let the man get a hand inside. "Hello there! Are you Guen Horitami? The guy who normally drives Keigo Takami to and from the Commission building?" Guen frowned and kept his hands on the steering wheel. "Yes, I am. Who are you?" Nero opened the folder and leafed through until he found a yellow slip of paper and slid it through the window.

"You've been served with a court ordered writ to come to the offices of Nakamura Associated within ten days, and give an eyewitness statement about the drive home for Keigo Takami on Friday evening. You have the right to legal representation when you come and make your statement. If you fail to give a statement in the scheduled ten days, you will be in violation of the court ordered writ and further legal action will be taken against you." Blinking, the driver looked at the paper in front of him and saw an active case of Keigo Takami vs. Heroes Public Safety Commission was on the top of the document.

"Is Keigo alright?" Guen asked with concern as he read over the document. Nero tilted his head at Guen and seemed to be trying not to turn his smile into a smirk. "I'm afraid I can only serve you with the court writ and advise that you get legal counsel to come with you. You will not be driving Keigo to the Commission today so if there's no further questions in regards to the writ, I will say have a good day!" Nero gave a jovial wave to the bewildered driver before walking back towards the building. Guen frowned and pulled out his phone, hitting a button to speed dial someone. He waited a moment before speaking as soon as the person on the other end answered. "You have a very big problem."

Agent Bends looked at her watch for the third time that morning. Keigo was late, and Guen hadn't called her to say something had come up. There were people who walked through the doors to the Commission building, employees headed to work, other assets who lived at home on the weekends, heroes who had meetings with people in the building. Each and every person moved past her on their own agenda as she waited with arms folded. That young man was going to get it from her. She would make sure he understood what punishment she would issue for making her wait. A voice spoke from behind her, a young amused tone as a man spoke clearly.

"Are you Ami Nisari? Also known as Miss Bends or Agent Bends?" She turned sharply and saw a young man with silver hair and bright hazel eyes that looked predatory as they looked her up and down, a hand offered to shake. "I've heard so much about you." Bends moved to shake his hand and noticed his eyes darkened quickly to a chocolate brown as his face suddenly broke into a grin. She could read the false pleasantries dripping off of him as he offered her a piece of paper with his other hand. Her mouth opened to ask a question, but he spoke over her as if he knew what she was going to ask and why.

"My name is Nero Nakamura, and this is a restraining order, issued to you on behalf of Keigo Takami. I'll save you the questions you're going to ask me. It goes into effect immediately and states you must stay 3000 meters away from my client. You are also restricted from contacting him through alternate parties, social media, phones or emails and you are banned from all buildings and facilities that he goes to on a regular basis regardless of whether he is present or not. That would include this building where he trains and studies currently. Failure to comply with this order will result in legal action including fines and jail time." Nero pointed towards the doors behind her. "If you need a taxi you can take mine. I asked it to wait for you."

Agent Bends gaped at him, her eyes murderous as she read the restraining order, gripping it in both hands. "How dare you! This is my place of employment! I am Keigo's aid while here and you have no right to do this to me! I am going to contact our legal department and-" nero interrupted her, his eyes returning to a hazel color as he placed a finger on his chin. "Oh right! Legal! I have to drop off some more paperwork to them. Thanks to You, there's all kinds of lawsuits that have been started. I wouldn't advise waiting here for them because the longer you are here, the more you violate that restraining order, and I did have the forethought to bring a police officer with me, if you would rather be arrested." The young lawyer grinned as he motioned to the constable standing just behind him to his left.

"Oh, and I wouldn't count on the Vice President bailing you out of this, no matter how many times you fucked or blew him after hours. He's going to be too busy reading all the subpoenas we filed for records, statements, videos and paperwork regarding Keigo Takami to give a damn about you." He leaned forward speaking just above a whisper. "This is what happens when you piss off a family of lawyers." Nero smirked as he gave Agent Bends a look that let her know he had seen the memories of her actions she would have rather kept private. Turning in her heels, Bends stormed out of the building, her phone already dialing someone in one hand while the other gripped the restraining order.

Nero let out a contented sigh as he moved to stand with the police officer. "I love doing leg work for my firm. Next stop is the legal department and most likely the Vice President's office. This way!" He waved the offer after him as he headed for the elevators like he belonged there, the memory of the layout fresh in his mind thanks to Agent Bends.

It felt really really really good to sleep in for Keigo. He didn't have to hurry to get up, get ready and meet up with Guen. In fact when he got up, he mussed his own hair a bit, realizing it was growing pretty long, and sorted his feathers before walking out of his bedroom into the kitchen. Azumi was leaning on the counter sipping a cup of tea with a plate full of pancakes on the table. "Good morning my handsome birdy. Hungry?" He nodded and rubbed his eyes a bit before plopping into one of the chairs. Keigo was wearing a black halter top and pajama pants, which were comfortable clothes for him. Looking around the kitchen and then apartment, he realized it was just himself and Azumi. She was dressed in jeans and a red blouse, her hair clipped back from her face.

"Where's dad and grandpa?" Azumi poured him a glass of juice as she ran her fingers through his messy blond locks of hair, earning a faint trill for her efforts. "Your father is at the office working and your grandfather went to Akina's to stay for a day or so while they all work on some paperwork. I figured you and I could spend the day together since you aren't going to the Commission today." He nodded and leaned into her hand smiling. "I'd like that. I haven't gotten to spend time with you since my graduation, really." She grinned and kissed the top of his head before helping him get his plate full of pancakes.

After breakfast, Keigo helped clean up before he got dressed in a long sleeved, cream colored Endeavor shirt with black baggy jeans. He adjusted his wings and made sure all three pairs of studs were in his ears before pushing his blond hair back and looking at himself in the mirror. His face no longer had any signs of being a child. He had a small stubble of blonde hair on his chin, his eyes lined with thicker black markings. The points were longer and more refined now, just like a bird of prey. He grinned and saw a handsome young man looking back at him, almost wishing he could send a picture to Sasha to see her swoon. He thought she was cute, but he liked guys a bit more, as he was learning. Plus Soji had taken his phone last night, so he didn't have it.

Keigo went to the living room and saw Azumi sitting on the sofa looking through a stack of papers that seemed like profile pages to him. When he sat next to her, he saw profile and side pictures of children on the corners of the pages. Names and information was listed, and Azumi was sorting them into stacks. "Are these the children you and dad are thinking of adopting?" He asked curiously as his wings fluttered. Azumi nodded and held up a sheet to show him.

"Yes. These are the adoption applications for a few of the ones we saw. We put all of our requests and preferences in, including yours, and these are what are the ones that we got back." Keigo took one of them, reading a bit. A few months back, all three of them had sat down and discussed this. Keigo wanted a little sister because he felt he would make a great big brother. Azumi wanted a child with an animal based quirk because they were often overlooked and ignored in the system. Soji didn't want any living family in the picture because while he was willing to fight for his family, he didn't want to deny another family member their rights to a child.

After multiple discussions, they had settled on a specific agency that adopted orphans that had animal based quirks and specifically children that had issues with moving too many times. This wasn't a temporary fostering, this was a

permanent adoption. Keigo glanced at the stacks on the table and frowned. "Looks like they sent you the file of every child in the orphanage." Azuki nodded and sighed. "I know. We asked for girls only but you never know. I'm separating out the older ones and the animal quirks that are not compatible with you." She held up a picture of a little boy with a wolf style quirk and Keigo was not able to stop his wings from raising, a bit defensive on instinct. "I see."

By the time she finished there were three files left in a small pile, the rest were flipped over and set aside. Keigo peered at each file and tilted his head curiously. "Are we going to go meet them? Do I get to come?" Azumi nodded and lifted the first one. "We will request meetings, and yes, you would have to come with us because she'll be your sister so we need to make sure you two don't want to kill each other immediately." Keigo smiled and leaned his head on Azumi's shoulder to read along with her. His mind wondered a bit as he asked.

"Mom? Did you ever regret adopting me?" Azumi blinked at him and looked confused. "Why on earth would I ever regret adopting you, Keigo? Where did this come from?" He looked down, even as she put an arm around him gently. "I feel like I've caused trouble with my birth parents, the Commission, now all of this." She pursed her lips in thought before shaking her head no. "Nope. I have never and will never regret making you my son. I agreed to be your mother and that includes through all the good and the bad." He looked at her and chewed on the corner of his lip before speaking. "How come you and dad never changed my last name? I'm almost 18 and everything for me is in the name Takami. It's never been Tayaka or Nakamura. How come?"

Azumi set down the adoption paperwork and rested both arms around him as she spoke gently. "I didn't change your name because it is who you are. You were born Keigo Takami, a beautiful little boy with golden eyes and golden hair and ruby wings. Just because your parents changed, your gone and upbringing changed, you are still Keigo Takami." Azumi smiled and nuzzled his cheek with her own, earning a chirp and trill from him as he smiled brightly. "You'll always be my handsome, smart, funny son." He smiled and kissed his mother's cheek as the phone rang. Pushing some hair out of his eyes, Azumi picked up the phone in the kitchen as Keigo looked at the paperwork again, smiling.

After a moment, Azumi walked into the living room and offered Keigo the wireless phone. "It's your Uncle Akina." Keigo took the phone and his wings perked. "Hello?" His uncle sounded happy on the phone, which was a bit different than how he had been Sunday when they all had discussed what to do. Keigo could hear talking in the background, maybe an intern from the phrases used. "Hello Keigo! How are you feeling today? Very well I hope?" Keigo loved that about his Uncles. They were always interested in hisbwell being or their clients before any of the legal stuff came up.

"I'm good, Uncle. How about yourself?" Still sounding happy, his Uncle chuckled. "I'm good. I wanted to let you know that everything we talked about yesterday has been taken care of. All the paperwork and claims have been filed. Everyone who needed to be served with paperwork was served first thing this morning. Now we wait for them to reach out about a meeting or we go to court. I know I asked this yesterday but it never hurts to double check. You understand what is being done? You're certain you want to do this?"

Keigo looked over at Azumi, who was sitting on the sofa with a soft smile on her face as she read one of the adoption files. With a similar smile on his face, Keigo nodded to himself addressing his Uncle. "I understand, and I'm certain this is what I want to do."

The Commission's legal department was in chaos. They had been blindsided by subpoenas for files and video of training sessions, educational classes, physical exams, medical records, simulation sessions and more. Not only that, a number of their employees had been served restraining orders forcing them to leave the building, orders of writ to give statements before a judge or legal witness about specific dates and times regarding Keigo Takami. To top it all off, the Vice President and President were given notice of non compliance with Keigo Takami's contract. Meaning both were facing fines and violation of contract lawsuits which would affect other private contracts.

The head of the legal department, a man named Nato Tenida, was pinching the bridge of his nose and wishing he wasn't in Japan. He had the task of going to a meeting with the President and board of directors, explaining what they were facing in its entirety, explaining how such a thing could have happened, and explaining what their options were. The Nakamura law firm had hit them so overwhelmingly fast and hard with legal issues, it was going to cost them millions in man hours and court fees to keep up. And they still had to deal with the lawsuits and contract violations.

Nato's secretary walked on, a stack of files in hand and a sympathetic look on her face. "Sir, they're ready for you. I tried to pull everything I could for you on the contracts that might be affected and options." He stood and adjusted his tie, straightened his suit and took the stack of folders, walking down the hall to the elevator. It was quiet as he stepped out into the waiting room with an armful of paperwork, nodding to the guard at the double doors to the conference room. He held it open for the head of the legal department. And Nato went to the first open end unused seat. Everyone seemed to be waiting for the president to show up, whispering to each other and making notes on notepads.

The President walked in, going straight to the head of the table and sitting down. The doors closed and she looked right at Nato. "Well?" Nato looked at all of the files. The silence stretched out as he slowly stood up, pulling a file out and opening it. "Ma'am, this is going to take a while to explain, and we aren't faultless in this problem." The president of the Heroes Public Safety Commission sat back in her chair giving him her full attention.

"I'm listening."
