Entry 68: "Preparations" 8.22.80
Today Nora and I met with Brenda West, the head of resource management for the vault. Brenda's in charge of all the supplies we have stockpiled and making sure that things are distributed according to need, with as little waste as possible. It makes sense, after all, given that we have limited resources-even with hydroponics growing food-to keep track of everything and make sure that we can survive until after we return to the surface. I certainly don't envy her, given the stacks of holotapes I saw sitting on her desk recording every single acquisition and procurement request and how things are used.
We went down to the storage level to meet with her for our appointment. According to Dr. Freidman every child born in the vault has to be prepared for well in advance to make sure we have sufficient resources put aside for the new bodies. Given that we haven't had anyone die-Vault Tec made sure our neighborhood only had healthy and relatively young people living in it-keeping resources ready requires budgeting in advance, hence our appointment with Brenda.
She greeted us and we explained that Nora is expecting twins. Brenda was surprised; we're the first couple to have more than one child in a pregnancy, and while not uncommon (Sarah and Susan are twins, as well as the Spangler boys) it is somewhat rare. Thankfully the vault was stocked to anticipate a large number of new additions-I mean, what else are bored married people going to do in their downtime, fucking is an obvious choice-so there were more than enough cots, blankets, and infant necessities ready for use. She made some notes to have things ready for delivery in the month prior to Nora's due date, and when we finished she congratulated us and promised to keep it quiet until we announced it publicly.
