Part 2 - The Chipette of My Dreams
Dave, the adopted father of the Chipmunks, was whistling away in his kitchen. He was cooking blueberry pancakes. The weather was nice and sunny, which put the man in a pretty good mood. "Fellas, breakfast is almost ready!" he yelled towards the stairs. He returned to whistling until he heard feint footsteps. He turned his head and saw the Chipmunks were exceptionally well-groomed this morning. They didn't have a single strand of hair out of place, a single wrinkle on their clothes, or even a spec of plaque on their teeth. Despite their perfect looks, the boys walked and emoted like they were walking on a minefield.
"Morning… boys?" Dave greeted, feeling quite puzzled. The three teens sat down at the kitchen table, with their heads somewhere else. "Are you all feeling alright?" their father asked.
"What's wrong? Do we look bad?" Simon sweated, "I mean, we all feel fine."
"I don't know; my stomach does feel funny," Theodore whimpered.
"It's because you're hungry, Theo. What else is new?" Alvin forced a smile. He then stuffed his brother's mouth with pancakes, "Don't mind him, Dave."
The dark-haired man raised an eyebrow. "Boys, is there something I need to know?" he questioned.
Alvin nearly choked on his food. "Oh, I just remembered Miss Smith wanted us to clean the chalkboard before class." He stood up, "Come on, boys!" He wasn't even halfway done, but Alvin grabbed each of his brothers and headed out the door.
Now Dave was 100% sure something was up. "Wait up a minute, now hold it!" Dave yelled as his sons ran off, "What in the world are you boys hidin…"
He hurried over to the front door and saw the boys shoving heart-wrapped presents and chocolates into their school bags. They all froze.
"We aren't hiding anything!" Alvin blurted, zipping his bag up quickly.
Dave let out a big sigh, relieved his sons weren't up to anything wrong. "You had me scared for a moment" he chuckled. He then knelt to their height, "Don't worry, I won't pester you about those presents. Just know anyone would be lucky to have you."
"We don't know what you're talking about," Theodore bluffed.
"Right," Dave nodded, "Have a great day at school." He then ruffled each of the Chipmunks' heads before they left outside.
Once they reached the sidewalk, Theodore's stomach grumbled. The green teen tried to take the food out of his backpack.
"Theodore," his brothers scolded. He short chipmunk immediately put the candy away.
Another school day was about to start. Even though they left early, the Chipmunks had yet to enter their home classroom out of nervousness. The Chipettes even arrived at their first classes before them.
Eleanor was sitting in Algebra, the first class of the day, which she shared with Theodore. The light green chipette was lost in her thoughts. "Brittany said the boy is supposed to ask for Valentine's, but I'm always the one to ask Teddy," She pondered, "What if he only said yes just to be nice? What if another girl asks him before me? Would he just go out with any old girl?"
Right outside the hallway, the Chipmunks were staring at Eleanor from afar. "I've never asked Ellie to be my valentine before," Theodore gulped, "What if I mess up?"
"Don't get soft on me, Theodore," Alvin stated, "Remember what I taught you: be smooth and subtle."
"Okay, here goes nothing," the small chipmunk muttered.
"You can do it, Theo!" Simon cheered.
The green Chipmunk walked directly up to his blonde best friend. "Hey, Ellie," Theodore greeted, shaking. He then took out his home-made heart-shaped cookies, "Want to be my valentine?"
Eleanor lit up like a firework. "OMG, Teddy, Yes!" she cheered loudly, getting the attention of everyone in the room.
"What?!" Alvin scoffed. He then walked over to his little brother, "That's not how you're supposed to do it. Give us a second, Eleanor." He then dragged Theodore back to the door, "Theodore, I said to be smooth and subtle."
"I know, I just thought it would be easier to just Ellie straight ahead," Theodore explained.
"Whatever, just do it again!" Alvin commanded.
Theodore walked back to his crush. "Sorry, Ellie. I forgot to be smooth and subtle," he stated awkwardly.
"It's okay, Teddy," Eleanor said seductively, shaking her eyebrows.
Theodore let out a cough, "Hey there uh… sugar face. Did you fall from heaven, because you're the only ten I see… Wait, I think I said it wrong."
Alvin facepalmed, "Now I get how high school teachers feel."
Eleanor was too overjoyed to notice Theodore's mess up. "Oh, Teddy. I'm so happy you asked me to be your valentine!" she smiled as she stood up to hug him.
"Of course, who else would I ask?" Theodore said obliviously.
"A-aw!" Eleanor cooed. She then squeezed her date like a stuffed animal (which caused him a little pain).
"Aw, our little brother is real Casanova," Simon said to Alvin, "It seems like he didn't need your advice after all."
"Maybe he didn't, but I bet you will," Alvin shot back, "You never even had a valentine before."
"Well, that is true" Simon scratched the back of his neck, "Even still, I don't want to give Jeanette the wrong idea."
"I'm just saying it worked for me every time," Alvin argued, "Now if you excuse me, I'm gonna get myself a valentine. You better not chicken out."
"You don't chicken out!" Simon yelled back at his brother as they parted ways.
Theodore might've been the timidest out of the Chipmunks, yet it took his brothers even longer to pop the question. Simon had plenty of opportunities to speak to Jeanette.
"Hey, Simon. Do you wanna partner up for the history project?" she asked her best friend, who had yet to say a word to her today.
"Ayeee!" Simon yelped. He then ran off, leaving the poor girl confused.
And the same thing happened during Calculus. "Simon, do you have an eraser I can borrow?" she tried to speak to him once more.
"Mmmm!" the bespectacled chipmunk muffled. He turned around and walked in the other direction. Jeanette started to get upset after that.
During gym, she didn't even bother confronting Simon, avoiding him as well. They were playing soccer (called football everywhere else), and the ball rolled off bounds.
"Yo, Simon. Get the ball!" yelled Andre.
"Got it!" the teen huffed. He ran after the soccer ball, which happened to stop in front of Jeanette, sitting on the bench. She was taken aback by him being so close. Simon was also caught off guard. The two of them stared at each other for a moment. Jeanette was about to speak up, but Simon took the ball and ran back without saying a word. Now she knew for sure that he was avoiding her. Jeanette felt heartbroken, wondering what she did wrong.
"I don't get why Simon is avoiding me," she sulked. It was now lunch, and she was sitting under the tree all by herself. "Could it be he doesn't want to be my friend anymore" the purple chipette began to tear up.
Little did she know that Simon was watching her from the other side of the field. It was already halfway through the school day, and he was still too chicken to talk to his crush. He was anything but a risk-taker, scared to do anything that he wasn't sure how it would turn out. It was one of his most significant flaws, one he didn't like to admit. "Why would Jeanette ever go out with a guy like me?" he scolded himself, "After all, I'm the biggest wimp in the world."
"Oh, Kevin. I can't wait to spend Valentine's with you" Pamala smiled while holding hands with her valentine.
"Pamala, whenever you're by my side, I'm the happiest guy in the world," Kevin said smoothly (despite his voice cracking a bit).
Jeanette overheard them and looked around, and it seemed everyone in school had company with them. "I guess I'm not meant to have a valentine," she sniffled. She was so sad that she curled up in a ball. Simon felt really guilty, realizing that he accidentally left the purple teen all alone. So to cheer up his best friend, he put away his fears and finally confronted the weeping girl.
"J-Jeanette, are you alright?" the tall chipmunk asked.
The chipette looked up with watering eyes and saw her best friend had finally spoken to her. "S-S-Simon?" she whimpered.
The boy knelt to her level, with a face full of shame. "Sorry I've been avoiding you," he sighed, "It's just… there's something I need to tell you."
"Oh…" Jeanette frowned. She expected the worst and turned away.
"So, uh… Jeanette, would you uh…" Simon stuttered, "Um… here!" He took something out of his bag and presented it to the girl.
Jeanette turned back to see what it was and was surprised to see a violet in a pot. "W-what is this?" she asked in awe.
"It's a p-present. I didn't want to ruin the surprise," Simon explained, "You see, I know how much you love plants, especially violets. And I know you dislike cut bouquets, so I made sure to get one that was still alive…"
"It's beautiful!" Jeanette sang. She stood straight up and admired the flower. She had the biggest grin, but soon her face went back to neutral "Not that I'm unthankful, because I really am, but what is the gift for?"
"Why, it's for Valentine's day!" Simon exclaimed, "Well, I guess it is a few days early."
"A Valentine's day gift?" Jeanette repeated, "Wait, does that mean…?"
"Well, uh… you don't have to yes if you don't want to" Simon scratched the back of his head nervously, "But I was hoping if you could be my aaaa…. Valentine?"
Jeanette froze for a moment, processing what her best friend just said. Suddenly, the usually timid chipette jumped around excitedly before pouncing on Simon. "Simon, of course, I'll be your valentine!" she cheered, wrapping herself around the boy.
Simon was now the one frozen in shock, full of disbelief that his longtime crush had agreed to spend Valentine's day with him. It then dawned on them that they were making complete physical contact, and they broke away blushing.
"Do you really want to spend Valentine's day with me, Jeanette?" Simon questioned in a shaky voice.
"Simon, you don't know how happy I am that you even asked me," Jeanette admitted, "You mean so much to me."
"And you mean so much to me," Simon smiled warmly, "So… do you mind if I have a seat?" He gestured to the tree.
"I would love it," Jeanette responded. So the two tall chipmunks sat down by the tree, now full of warm feelings. Jeanette grabbed Simon's hand and leaned her head on her shoulder. "By the way, you owe me some quality time," she teased, "You know how lonely I get."
"Again, sorry about that," Simon answered, "I was just so nervous."
"Well, it was worth the wait," Jeanette cooed. And the two chipmunks stayed like that for the rest of the period.
As if time itself were giving all the chipmunks a break, the rest of the school day flew by. The final school bell rang, and all students excited happily. Especially Simon and Theodore, who was walking down the hall filled with confidence. At the exit, they spotted their red brother Alvin waiting for them.
"You two are looking cool," the middle chipmunk grinned, "So Simon, were you able to ask Jeanette, or did you wimp out?"
"Actually, Alvin. I did ask Jeanette," Simon proclaimed, "And she said yes!"
"Way to go, my blue-wearing brother," Alvin gave the nerd a hi-fived, "It's oh so satisfying to finally have brothers who are lady killers like me."
"So, how did it go with Brittany?" Theodore asked, "Did she say yes?"
Alvin suddenly went wide-eyed and began to sweat heavily. "Huh? What the heck are you talking about?" he stuttered.
"Wa-wa-wa-What a minute," Simon interrupted, "Are you telling me that despite you ragged on us for our dating skills, you have yet to ask your best friend to be your valentine?"
"When did I ever say I wanted Brittany to be my valentine?" Alvin argued, full of fluster, "For the millionth and last time, I don't like that way!"
"But you seem to think about Brittany all the time," Theodore pointed out.
"Thinking of ways to one-up her!" Alvin tried to explain.
"And talk about her all the time," Simon added.
"Talking smack," the red-capped teen explained some more.
"Always proving yourself to her," Theodore listed off, "Always around her, always talking to her, always looking for her…"
"Okay, Theodore, I think we proved our point" Simon stopped the green chipmunk, "Come on, Alvin. We made our promises, and now you must do yours."
Alvin was no longer overreacting. Instead, he went silent and stared at my feet. He leaned against the wall. "Come on, guys," Alvin said under his breath, "Brittany hates my guts."
His brothers looked at each other, frowning. "Alvin, Brittany doesn't hate you," Theodore assured.
"Who are you kidding, Theodore?" Alvin replied somberly, "All I have ever done is annoy and anger her."
"Alvin, if she truly hated you, she would stop talking to you a long time ago," Simon stepped in, "I know you two don't act like it, but I know you two care about each more than you let on."
"You really think so?…" Alvin muttered. Suddenly, he had a determined look on his face. "You know what, you're right. I need to do my part," he announced boldly, "I mean, I'm Alvin Seville, the biggest bachelor in Hollywood. Voted Mr. Heartthrob 7 times in a row. And what better way to prove that I'm the better rockstar than getting my rival to fall head over heels for me!"
"Alvin, I think you're going at these all wrong," Simon warned.
"Prepare to get your heart stolen, Brittany Miller!" Alvin laughed evilly. He then marched away before either of his brothers could say another word.
"How in the world are him and Brittany the most popular ship?" Simon questioned.
"Say what you will about them; you can't say they're a boring pair," Theodore answered.
Alvin ran over to the one place he was sure to find his crush: cheerleader practice. He had to do football practice after school anyway, so he had one more chance to pop the question.
At the football field, Brittany and the rest of the cheerleaders were sitting on the bleachers. Usually, she looked forward to practice, but this time she found herself feeling inadequate.
"So, Tyler, what are you and Ben going to do for V-day?" the pink chipette heard one of her fellow cheerleaders ask.
"He said he was going to take me out with his car," Tyler answered, "He said the destination was a secret."
The two girls laughed among each other while Brittany felt like an outsider. "Every girl in school has a date except for me," she brooded to herself, "Oh Brittany, you finally lost your touch. Your beauty was all you had going for yourself, and you even blew that!"
The chipette then spotted Alvin arriving at practice in full football gear. His team members greeted him with hi-fives and fist-bumps. "Come on, Brittany. Time to practice our halftime performance!" one of the cheerleaders informed her.
"Oh, coming!" Brittany called back.
"Let's go, ladies! Move those legs!" Coach Kramer commanded as the football team did their warm-ups, "This ain't no tea party! Do I make myself clear!"
"Sir, I think it's rather ill of you to keep referring to us ladies,'' Charlie the wide receiver butted in, "You're pretty much inferring that women are weak and feeble, which in this progressive time is pretty problematic. Girls have proven multiple times that they are as capable as men, even with football. I know you're trying to encourage us to do better, but ironically at the same time, you're discouraging many potential football players from doing the same."
The entire team stopped and faced the outspoken member. Coach Kramer walked up to Charlie, staring him down with red eyes. He then placed his hand on the teen's shoulder. "You're right, son. You made me see the errors of my way, and now I'm able to become a better person thanks to you," the man said calmly, "Also, never talk back to your coach! Drop and give me 50, weak gentleman!"
Charlie then began to do 50 push-ups as told. "See… was that... so hard," he grunted.
"Come on, maggots! Let's practice our plays!" the coach then blew his whistle.
Meanwhile, the cheerleaders were practicing their coronagraphy. "7, 8, 9, 10! Let's all cheer for West Eastman!" the girls changed, "They will win the game for us! The Eagles will be victorious! Go Eagles!"
Every cheerer was performing their all, everyone except Brittany. She was so spaced out that she forgot to pose at the end. "Brittany, get your head in the game!" Hailey complained.
"Oh, sorry…" Brittany frowned.
She wasn't the only one distracted, as Alvin couldn't help but look at her while practicing.
"Alvin heads up!" Andre yelled. Before Alvin could react, the football flew past him.
"What?" he popped back to reality, "Oh, whoopsy."
"Seville, where's your head at!" Kramer scolded, "That was your third screw-up today."
"Sorry, coach. I guess I'm a bit out of it today" Alvin chuckled nervously.
"Well, then get back into it, son!" the coach demanded. Alvin nodded and put his focus back onto the football.
"Come on, let's see some somersaults!" Hailey instructed. Brittany and two other girls were supposed to roll around in the foreground, but the chipette was once again lost in thought. So when she tried to perform a somersault, she fell straight on her bum. "Brittany, girl. What's with you today?" the head cheerleader questioned, "You're usually our best dancer."
"Sorry, Hailey. I'm just not into it today," Brittany admitted.
"Aw, why didn't you say so, sweetie?" Hailey sympathized, "Why don't you sit this one out."
"We are here to support you!" Pamala added.
"Okay…" Brittany reluctantly agreed. She then sat alone on the bleachers, not feeling much better. She decided to look over at Alvin once more.
"There's only one boy I ever wanted, and he doesn't want to have anything to do with me," the chipette chastised herself.
"Seville! You missed another ball, again!" Coach Kramer cried, "I hate to do this, but I'm putting you on the bench."
"Aw, coach. But.." Alvin tried to speak.
"Do I like a toilet? No butts!" the man ordered. Alvin didn't fight it any further and went to sit on the bleachers.
Brittany saw he was coming near and tried to act oblivious. The red teen sat about 20 feet away from her. Neither of them acknowledged the other. Both chipmunks' hearts started to beat fast. The awkwardness between them was immense.
Alvin tried to get a glance at his crush. "Come on, Alvin. You flirt with girls all the time! Brittany is no different…" he said to himself, "Well, except for the fact she's been your friend since the second grade and knows everything about you. She is also the one girl you're too scared to lose…" He found himself staring at the pink teen again, and when Brittany decided to look at him as well, they accidentally locked eyes. At this point, it was clear that the chipmunks knew about the other's presence. Both of them wanted to look away but knew it was too late for that. "There's no other way out of this," the boy thought, "Simon, Theodore, wish me luck."
Alvin began to slide his way over to Brittany. "Oh crap! He's coming!" Brittany screamed internally.
Finally, the red-capped teen confronted the redhead. "Yo, Britt," Alvin greeted strangely, "I haven't talked to you all day. So you're benched too?"
"Oh, h-hey Alvin," Brittany stammered, "For your information, I was simply taking a break."
"Oh, yeah. Me, too." Alvin defended, "I was just trying to make you feel better."
"Alvin, I'm the best cheerleader in West Eastman. I would never get benched." Brittany proclaimed.
"And I'm the best football player," Alvin argued, "Whatever, that's not important. So… how's your day going?"
"Um, alright," Brittany answered timidly, "How about yours?"
"Good, good," the boy nodded, "So, Valentine's Days is coming up…"
"It sure is…" Brittany began to turn red, "So, who did you ask this year?"
"Me? Oh uh…" Alvin paused, "I actually haven't asked someone yet."
"You haven't?" Brittany asked in disbelief, "You usually have a date as soon as February 1st."
"Yeah, this year's kinda complicated," Alvin chuckled, "I guess someone has already asked you to be their Valentine."
"Actually, no," Brittany sighed, "I don't get it. I usually get asked at least once. It's so embarrassing."
Alvin frowned a bit, seeing how ashamed Brittany looked. He then decided it was now or new. "Well, it seems like neither of us has a date," he began to say, "So how about we, you know… hangout?"
Brittany widened her eyes suddenly. She slowly turned to her childhood friend. "Hangout… on Valentine's Day?" she peeped, "Are you saying…"
"I thought since you don't have anyone else, why don't you be my Valentine?" Alvin finally confessed.
Brittany's mind then shattered into a million pieces. She stood there motionless, leaving Alvin feeling quite scared. "Do you think I'm an idiot?" She whimpered.
"Do I what?" Alvin questioned.
"Do you think I'm an idiot?!" Brittany screamed, "What kind of sick prank are you trying to pull? Like you would ever ask me to be your valentine!"
"But Brittany, I'm serious!" he exclaimed, "I do want you to be my valentine!"
"Am I seriously supposed to believe that the same boy who always tried to defeat and belittle me wants to spend time with me on the most romantic day of the year!" Brittany wept, tears falling harder than a thunderstorm.
Alvin stood up and took a big present from out of his bag. He showed it to the crying girl. "Here, open it," he said sternly.
Brittany reluctantly ripped off the wrapping paper and was shocked to see what was underneath. It was a framed Hollywood Star that read "Brittany and the Chipettes."
"I remember how upset you were when me and my brothers got a star on the walk of fame, and you didn't," Alvin began to explain, "And even though I did tease you about it, you really did deserve a star as well. I definitely don't say it enough, but you and your sisters are seriously talented. I think you have a beautiful singing voice, and you always do wonderfully on stage. You're so amazing that you often make me feel inadequate. I only ever teased you to make myself feel better. I guess you could say I'm… jealous."
Brittany stopped crying. She no longer felt angry at the chipmunk. Instead, her insides were so warm that her heart felt like it was on fire. And so, the chipette went over and wrapped her arms around the boy. "Oh, Alvin. That's the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me," Brittany choked up, "I've always dreamt of the day you would ask me to be your valentine. In that way, you already gave me the greatest gift of all. Yes, Alvin. I will be your valentine."
And that's when Alvin's mind shattered into a million pieces. He stared off into space while Brittany held him ever so lovingly. Suddenly, the two of them heard cheering. They turned to see that everyone out in the field had watched the whole thing.
"Woo, go, Brittany!" Hailey cheered.
"That was freaking smooth, my dude!" Andre cried.
"ALVIN, BRITTANY, ALVIN, BRITTANY," the cheerleaders began to chant. The football team joined in as well.
Even Coach Kramer himself was tearing up. "Seville, you just scored the biggest touchdown that is love," he announced, "And for that performance, you and your pink girlfriend can head home early for the day. Godspeed."
Alvin and Brittany smiled at each other while everyone congratulated them. The red chipmunk then grabbed the pink chipette by the hand, and they ran across the field (now imagine the final chorus Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News is playing in the background).
It don't take money!
Alvin picks Brittany up and steals Andre's skateboard (who didn't really mind).
Don't take fame!
The two chipmunks flew down the street, dodging all sorts of vehicles and people.
Don't need no credit card to ride this train
Alvin grinded down stair railings and leaped over a family picnic.
Tougher than diamonds
Stronger than steel
Alvin and Brittany then rid through a pool party and swerved through a marching band.
You won't feel nothing until you feel!
The two chipmunks then soared over the walk of fame, passing many celebrities.
That's the power!
That's the power of love!
They then looped around a giant water fountain that was going off.
That's the power!
That's the power of love!
Alvin and Brittany glided over two steep hills before finding themselves back in the suburbs.
You feel the power of love!
You feel the power of love!
Alvin then a couple of donuts in front of their houses before settling Brittany down nicely. He kicked down on the skateboard and caught it with one hand.
You feel the power of loooooooove!
"So, how about I talk to you later?" Alvin said smoothly.
"That sounds nice," Brittany fluttered her eyelashes, "See you around, baseball cap."
"Buenas Noches, ponytail," Alvin shot back. They then parted ways with some swagger in their step.
Now all the chipmunks have asked their chipette to be their valentine. It should be smooth sailing from there, right? Not quite. I really should've started this a month ago because now Valentine's day is Sunday, and there's no way I'm going to finish by then. Oh well, isn't the entire of February Valentine's? What do you mean it's actually Back History Month? Well then, have a good V-day, and I hope to see you next time!
