Epilogue
"One week ago. We lost a saint."
Gerald's voice basically trembled as he spoke. He looked out through the crowd of people. All the men were wearing black suits and ties. All the women were wearing black dresses.
"But his legacy will never be forgotten." Gerald said as calmly as he could. He was trying his best to control the tears flowing out of his eyes. Phoebe clung close to his right arm, tears of her own flowing free from her eyes.
"Arnold Phillip Shortman was the greatest friend a man could ask for." Gerald said, almost choking on his own words.
Through the crowd, fellow classmates, teachers, family members, and one blonde haired girlfriend all cried together.
Helga looked at the plot of ground. It was still covered in grass. No plot had been dug for her deceased boyfriend.
All the police had found was a pile of bones. That was all that remained of Arnold.
After the day, she vowed to herself that whoever had locked Arnold up in the building would someday pay. And the blood would be on her hands.
…
"Stella." Harvey said as he walked through the front door of the boarding house. He quickly took off his police hat." Is it okay if I come in?"
Stella looked at the man through teary eyes and nodded. It was all she could do.
He nodded at her and walked in the kitchen. The whole kitchen was silent. Miles and Phil sat to the right of the table, staring down at their bowls of cold soup. Dry lines of tears could be seen on their eyes.
From across the table, Helga sat alone picking a spoon through her soup. Like the men across from her, her tears had also dried. However, she did not acknowledge Harvey's presence in the room.
"So." Harvey said in a light tone." We have finally received the results from the autopsy report."
Helga continued to pick at her soup. She already knew it was Arnold.
"It was a guy named Jimmy Smith that died in the fire."
Helga froze." Jimmy Smith." She said, repeating Harvey's words as she finally looked over at him.
"Wait a second." Phil said as he stood up from the table." What are you trying to tell us?"
"A-are you saying that he's alive?!" Helga asked. Hope could be found in her voice for the first time in a week.
However, all Harvey did was sigh in response." Helga, I really don't know."
…
Darkness. It was all he could feel around him. He hadn't seen the sun in days. Too many days to count.
He sat against the wall of a cold and dark room. He had his arms wrapped around his legs, trying to keep himself warm. It was exactly freezing, but it was more like a lukewarm kind of chill he got. After all, the only article of clothing he had on was his underwear.
The room mostly stayed silent. Everyone now and then, the room would shake and a loud roaring noise could be heard. He could only assume he was underground and the noise was a nearby subway passing by.
He could hear footsteps throughout the dark. Coming his way. Thank God. That meant food!
The creaking of a door opening could be heard in front of him. He then heard a metal tray slide across the floor right to his feet.
He instantly dove into the food. It was cold and bland. He didn't care he needed as much as he could get.
"You know, you really owe me. " A sinister voice said to him through the dark.
"If I wouldn't have pushed you through that window back at the burning building, we both would be dead."
A sinister laugh could be heard through the dark.
"Enjoy yourself for now. But it won't last long. I am going to make you feel how my life is. I am going to make you watch me take everything you love away from you. Maybe then you'll understand how it feels to be me."
He stopped eating for just a moment to stare at the darkness for just a moment. The creaking of the door could be heard again, followed by total silence.
In the darkness, he sat back against the wall. Although it couldn't be seen, tears were rolling down Arnold Shortman's cheeks.
The end!
For now...
