He had to kill the monster. He had to kill the thing that killed his best friend. Jacob knew he could never have Bella, and she'd be turned into a vampire, but at least she'd be alive. No matter what he said about her being better off dead, he knew he would choose vampire Bella over dead Bella any day.
Resolutely, Jacob followed the sound of heartbeats, until he came to a small room. The lights were off and there was a warm glow from the fire. Rosalie was sat in a chair, turned away from him, cooing to the baby.
"Renesmee," he heard her say. So the child was a girl.
As he took another step towards her, Renesmee's eyes locked with his, and suddenly, his whole centre shifted. His world changed. He couldn't kill her. It wasn't possible. All he wanted now, was for her to be safe and happy.
Jacob had imprinted.
As he came out of his unexpected reverie, he heard the snarls of the wolf pack. They were coming for his imprint, and since he was no longer part of the pack, they couldn't hear his thoughts to know that.
Quickly, he ran out of the room, round the side of the house, to see the Cullens guarding their house, and the wolves surrounding them. Jumping between them, he shouted, "Stop! It's over! If you kill her you kill me!"
Sam made to lunge forwards, but Jacob transformed and landed in front of him, snarling and growling.
I imprinted, he said, realising he could once again hear the thoughts of the pack. You can't touch her.
He watched with satisfaction as Sam slowly dragged his front paw back, and the rest of the pack followed their Alpha's lead. Once they'd all retreated back into the forest, Jacob phased back.
"What do you mean 'it's over'?" Carlisle asked.
"I imprinted. Whoever a wolf imprints on… can't be touched. It's our most absolute law. Renesmee is safe," Jacob explained.
But then he felt something. Something painful, piercing his heart. From the house, Rosalie could be heard screaming at Edward.
"Edward! How could you do that? Bella died for Renesmee and you throw her life away like it meant nothing!"
Jacob's eyes widened and he ran inside, praying he had misinterpreted Rosalie's words. But the pain in his chest told him he hadn't.
He reached the room he imprinted on Renesmee, and saw Rosalie screaming abuse at her brother, cradling a limp baby.
"No. No!"
He was vaguely aware of Carlisle entering the room behind him. "Rosalie, what happened?"
"Edward! He killed Renesmee! He drank from his own daughter and he did so intentionally!" she cried, almost hysterical.
Emmett's eyes darkened, seeing the pain Edward had caused his mate. He wrapped Rosalie in his arms, knowing she had always longed for a baby, and now Edward had taken away her only chance of one.
"Edward!" Esme gasped. "Bella gave her life for that child, and you killed her. Does that mean nothing to you? Bella's sacrifice was in vain!"
"That's exactly it, Esme," Edward roared. "She died! Because of that monster! That monster killed her and I had to kill it! Bella was my mate- I had to avenge her!"
"No, Edward," Carlisle interjected. "You didn't. She gave up her life willingly. It was not taken from her by cruel, unnecessary means. Furthermore, Renesmee was only a baby, and part of this family. She was innocent, and she could not help what she was doing. Edward, would Bella have wanted you to do that?"
"No, but if we'd just got it out of her, she'd still be here," he replied, bitterly.
"Dammit Edward! It was her choice! Not yours!" Rosalie screamed. "She gave up her life for her daughter, and you throw that life away, so Bella's death was in vain."
"She died! Bella died! I can't live without my mate, but I could not rest until I killed the thing that killed her!" he said, stubbornly.
Everyone knew they could not get through to Edward. His mind had been made up, and he refused to see this situation differently.
Jacob was seeing red.
"You! You killed my imprint!" he growled.
Edward turned to focus on Jacob, reading his thoughts. Suddenly, it dawned on him that he would not survive to see the sun rise the next morning. Just as he was determined to avenge his mate, Jacob would not rest until his imprint was avenged.
The rest of the Cullens could understand Jacob's need to avenge Renesmee, since it was much more logical than Edward's stupid desire to kill his daughter. And though it would hurt them to lose Edward just after they lost Bella and Renesmee, they knew there was no way to stop Jacob other than killing him, which would break the treaty in Sam's eyes, and spark a war between them and the pack. That and the fact they all somewhat felt that Edward deserved what was coming to him.
"You can't be serious," Edward asked, in disbelief. "You're not even going to try stop him?"
"No, Edward," Carlisle stated, simply. "Frankly, you deserve this. You call Renesmee a monster, but you are the true monster. For what kind of person heartlessly kills their own child?"
Alice shook her head, gazing at her brother, regretfully. "You always believed yourself to be a monster and I always told you that wasn't true. Now… now I'm not so sure."
Edward knew his family- no, they weren't even his family anymore. They disowned him the moment he took his daughter's life- would not help him. Why they could not see his reasons for his actions, he couldn't fathom.
He had planned to commit suicide- planned it from the moment he knew he'd lost Bella. But he had hoped for it to be quick and easy, relatively painless. Now though, Jacob was going to take his sweet time, torturing Edward as best as he could, prolonging the vampire's death due to the fact he had lost both his imprint and best friend to him.
And Jacob was looking forward to that.
