Chapter 32: We're In Trouble!

Rory closed her eyes at the fading memory of ancient times. After Evy nearly killed herself, everyone sat down around the boat, and near the podium where Izzy stood, listening in on the conversation, while mending the boat. She had explained what happened, and how she was Nefertiri, and that Rory was clearly her handmaiden, and protector of the Book of the Dead, as well as Amun Ra. That explained a lot of why she was so enamored by the Book of the Dead all these years, not just wanting to bring her parents back.

But Ardeth had longed ago explained to her that they were in their resting place, any disturbance would be catastrophic, and she would loose them forever. She did not want that for her parents. She decided to let them be. She would be with them soon enough.

"Evy, I know you haven't exactly been yourself lately, with all these dreams and visions…" Rick stated concernedly for her.

Rory shuddered. "It was real trippy, Rick," she said, giving him a firm nod of validation on how crazy it was for her to actually be there. She felt like she'd escaped her body and went back in time, but at the same time, she could hear Ardeth in the background, as if she were two places at once.

Rick arched an eyebrow at his best friend.

"No, no," Evy shook her head. "They're memories from my past life. Honestly, I'm not loosing my mind. It all makes perfect sense now," she said confidently.

"And that's why we found the bracelet?" Rick asked still in pure disbelief.

"Exactly. I was its protector," she said.

"Now do you believe my friend? Clearly, you were destined to protect this woman," Ardeth said. Rory smiled lightly at how romantic that sounded.

"Right," Rick scoffed. "She's a reincarnated princess, and I'm a warrior for God."

"And your son leads the way to Ahm Shere," Ardeth said as a matter of fact. Three sides of the pyramid. This was all preordained thousands of years ago," Ardeth explained gingerly.

"And how does the story end?" Evy asked.

"Ah, only the story is written, not the destination," Ardeth replied.

"Convenient," Rick rolled his eyes and nudged Rory. Rory gave him a look. She believed it now more than ever. Why couldn't he?

"How do you explain the mark on your arm?" Ardeth prompted.

"Coincidence," Rick replied with a firm nod.

Ardeth smirked. "My friend, there is a fine line between coincidence and fate," he said, and brought Rory over to his side, and onto his lap. She laid her head on his shoulder.

"And, clearly you're okay with this," Rick said motioning a nod towards Ardeth.

Rory smiled. "It sure explains why I never really amounted to anything through this life. I thought I was stagnant for a long time. No real direction. Then you came along, my best friend. My life slowly started to fall into place. All I know now is that I have to get the Book of the Dead, and the Book of Amun Ra from yours truly. I am their protector after all," her smile brightened, making Rick sigh.

"Well, if you need any help, I'm here old mum," Jonathan offered, and Rory nodded her head in thanks to the Carnahan sibling. Somehow she knew she could always count on him.

Karnak, Egypt

The next day, and in the afternoon, they finally reached Karnak. However, when they got there, there seemed to be an empty unmoving train as Ardeth and Rick looked around with their guns in hand just in case.

"They're gone. We've lost them!" Ardeth announced.

Meanwhile Rory and Evy were looking inside the Karnak temple for any signs of Alex. The sun was too hot, sand was everywhere, and everything seemed really beige and bare. Rory looked down at the sands beneath her feet, and then around her surroundings, wondering if she could sense anything other than Evy's worries about her missing son.

They were definitely here. She walked passed the fountain pool, and closer towards it where she sensed the Book of the Dead that had been used here.

She sighed. "They were here," Rory said, making Evy turn to look at the woman. "And Anuk-Su-Na-Mun is fully regenerated into her reincarnated body."

Evy frowned at that and continued to walk around further into the temple until she spotted something in the corner by a couple of rocks.

"Rick!" She cried out, and ran towards it. Rory quickly followed after the woman and saw that Evy was holding Alex's tie.

Ardeth and Rick soon came running inside, guns tight to their chests as they met up Evy and Rory. Evy handed Rick Alex's tie.

"Alex left us his tie," she exclaimed. "And…" she pulled off his jacket. "He left us a little sandcastle," she said, brushing off the sandy top. "It's the temple of Aida Philai. They've gone to Philai."

"That a boy, Alex!" Rick exclaimed. "Come on!" He grabbed Evy by the hand, and Rory looked over at Ardeth, giving him a grim look, but tried to be hopeful as the two mummies were now regenerated and probably powerful.

Izzy flew them from site to site, in search for Alex. Once they reached Philai, Evy alerted that Abu Simbel was next. Ardeth continued to send Horus delivering messages to the grand army of the med-jai that was secretly following them behind.

Alex left them something each time that they were on their journey in search for them. It seemed days on end, and Rory wondered if they would ever find him.

They were heading far into the deep deserts of Egypt, beyond the borders, almost, as far as to the Nile River, where Izzy found himself turning the corners of into the caravans of mountainous rock that formed around the Nile River.

"That's the blue Nile down there," Rick said, looking down at the flowing river below them.

"In ancient times all this still belonged to the upper kingdom," Evy said, glancing at it all around her.

"Don't worry Evy. Alex's a good kid. He'll leave us a sign," Rick said reassuring her.

The Nile was a beautiful blue just as Rory remembered. It made her smile. Ardeth came up beside her as she stood by the right of the flying boat.

"I could live out here," she stated.

Ardeth smiled. "Yeah?"

"It's so beautiful."

"I wouldn't mind it," Ardeth said. Rory looked up at him with wide eyes. "You have a calming and soothing presence. I find it relaxing, and enjoying even."

"Not all the time," Rory said.

"True. Not all the time, but I don't mind those times either," he added, making Rory's heart fill up with all sorts of feelings that she couldn't really describe right now. "The Med-jai are desert people for life, Rory."

Rory nodded, "I know. I've never really been a city girl. I mean I can be, but it's not what my heart yearns for if that makes sense."

Ardeth nodded. "Very much so. So, do you think that-"

"We're in trouble!" Izzy yelled, catching Ardeth off guard, as they turned their heads around to stare at a big mouth-wall of water coming straight towards them.

"Horus, fly!" he shooed his owl off of him so that he didn't get caught up in the water that was after them. Ardeth grabbed a hold of Rory as she nearly lost her balance when Izzy sprinted the engine to move faster. Everyone grabbed onto something so they didn't fall over.

"Izzy!" Rick cried at him. "Starboard! Turn right! Starboard!" he directed him with his fingers.

They sprinted to a full stop, especially when it seemed like Imhotep's face of water had disappeared. Rory held onto Ardeth for dear life, shivering from the splashes of water that had been sprung onto them.

"Something someone forgot to mention, hmm?" Izzy asked, glaring at Rick. Rory looked at him apologetically.

"Ah…people," Jonathan said suddenly, making everyone turn towards him at the other side of the boat. Rory looked up at Ardeth as he turned around and walked towards it. She followed suit, and widened her eyes at the beautiful greenery that displayed before her.

"Oh my god…" she whispered in shock. "Wow."

"Ahm Shere," Ardeth announced.

"It's beautiful," Rory said.

"All the more deadly," Ardeth added.

"He's back!" Izzy cried. Everyone turned to face Imhotep's open mouth of water coming straight for them, but none had time to react, only duck, when he swallowed them whole, causing the boat to run out of gas, "Well, that's not good," and fall straight to the ground.
