A week after getting engaged, found Carrie and Devin at the door of Devin's childhood home. The morning was overcast with dark clouds and a slight drizzle, this made the already large mansion seem cruel and uninviting, a feeling that was often connotated with the Lee household.

'' Do we have to be here? I mean email and texting exist don't they? I didn't dream that?'' Devin asked.

'' They do but come on, we'll have a nice day with your parents and break the happy news to them. I'm sure they're going to be overjoyed to hear about our engagement'' Carrie said.

'' Seriously?''

Carrie glared at her new fiancé.

'' Fine'' Devin rang the doorbell which proceeded to play a classical tune.

The door wasn't opened by either of Devin's parents but rather by a woman dressed in a red flannel shirt, ripped black jeans and what appeared to be beat-up Adidas shoes.

'' My little bro'' the woman said embracing him in a bone-crushing hug.

'' Hey Cindy, I can't-breathe'' Devin choked.

'' Sorry, and you brought blondie. C'mere'' Cindy said embracing Carrie.

'' Hey Cindy. Are your parents home?'' Carrie asked.

'' You a cop?'' Cindy asked.

'' No, I'm an occupational therapist.''

'' Then come on in.''

Cindy led the pair through a large hallway into a media room where a sharply dressed man was busy reading a copy of the art of war. A woman next to him, presumably his wife, was busy watching project runway.

'' Hey mom, hey dad'' Devin said.

'' Son! Welcome home'' Devin's father said. Aaron Lee was among one of Canada's top financiers, having come from poverty in Beijing, he had scraped what little he had to come to Canada for a better life. Using his financial skills and knack for stocks, the man had been headhunted by Murphy& associates to become their CFO, a job he happily accepted. He was an intimidating man to say the least, he looked much like his son save for his greying hair and piercing gaze.

'' I see you brought Ms. Personality with you. Tell me, are you still working with ingrates?'' he asked.

'' Dad be nice'' Devin hissed.

Soon the woman stood up next to him and gave her son a handshake. Angela Lee was not a woman who enjoyed emotion, to her it was a sign of weakness. This was a hypocritical statement as she had gone through life on her looks and was a self-proclaimed trophy wife. She was exactly that. Botoxed and implanted, in her daughter's words, she was more plastic than flesh.

'' Devin, you've done something haven't you?'' her mother said.

'' No mom.''

'' Please take a seat. Anyone want anything to drink?'' Aaron asked going towards the bar.

'' I'll take a water dad.''

'' I'll have a Heineken.''

Aaron looked at Carrie half lidded. '' We do not keep beer here, harlot, we serve alcohol of a higher caliber.''

'' She'll take a water too'' Devin said.

The next 10 minutes was just awkward small talk with the occasional anecdote.

'' Mom are you ok?'' Devin asked.

'' Devin, you didn't.''

'' Didn't what?''

'' You got the harlot to say yes to marriage and is that my grandmother's ring?!''

'' She's no harlot mom, she's the love of my life. Secondly when you gave me that ring you said I could give it to a woman of my choosing. I choose Carrie.''

'' I meant a woman of our choosing. This...this woman is no good for you.''

'' How would you know, you've never even taken time to know her?''

'' I don't need to. All you Smiths are the same, cruel heartless-

'' Don't you dare ! My family works hard for their money, unlike you husband who cheated every one of his business deals!'' Carrie yelled.

'' How dare you. You already corrupted my son into playing with the dirt, now you trick him into wedding your boring behind. Uggh, I should've stayed in China.''

'' Carrie's done nothing but support me in my contracting career. She actually got me into the construction business.''

'' Son why would you throw away a wonderful career in finance for one in logistics?'' Angela asked.

'' Because I enjoy being a contractor. I enjoy watching my buildings get erected and I hire the best of the best as my subordinates.''

'' He's been involved with some of the biggest projects in the province. I couldn't be prouder'' Carrie said pecking him on the cheek.

'' Get your whore lips off of him'' Angela said. '' Devin if you don't take that engagement ring off her finger right now-

'' Then what? I'm a grown man I can make my own decisions.''

'' You aren't acting like one. A grown man would think twice before marrying a harlot like her. She's so boring as well, what did you say? She reads for enjoyment?'' Aaron scoffed.

'' I don't have to take this'' Devin said as he stood up and walked to the door.

'' Devin where're you going?'' Carrie asked.

'' Home. My real one, with you.''

'' Devin if you step foot outside this house you'll never be welcomed back'' Angela snapped.

'' I wouldn't expect anything less from you mom.''

Devin and Carrie left the home but they were unaware that they had had an audience for their argument.

Cindy had heard the whole thing. She had always felt protective of Devin. Not only because he was her little brother btu also because of the life he endured.

Most of his life he hadn't had many true friends except for Carrie. Only people who wanted to hang out with him for his media room or to borrow money. Cindy had spent many nights chasing away girls who tried to steal money from his wallet.

Shelly was the only other person who seemed genuinely interested in Devin, the truth was that she was only in it for the money and was just good at hiding it.

Cindy walked downstairs and faced her parents.

'' I hope you realize the gravity of the situation you've created.''

'' He'll be back, he needs our money to survive'' Aaron said as he took a puff of his cigarette.

'' He doesn't. He makes plenty of money, he's 22 he doesn't need to rely on mommy and daddy anymore. And neither to do I'' Cindy went back to her room and began to pack her bags.
