Jen had never had to fly so fast in all her life. She was a good flyer, but she'd never had to chase a moving car before. The police station was not very close to where Dane Majors lived, but Allie and Duncan hadn't gotten on the highway. Which was just as well or Jen never would have been able to follow them. And thankfully traffic made them stop a lot so she could pause and rest. She'd never sat on top of a streetlamp before, and she didn't much like it at all, actually. Being so high up and not flying was strange and nerve-wracking. She felt like a gust of wind might blow her over.

She was relieved when Duncan finally parked the car outside the gates of an enormous mansion. Jen had seen pictures of the house in Nick's case file when they were going over the case together but seeing it up close was different. It was just so bloody big.

Nick's house was big as far as Jennifer was concerned. Other than the palace, she'd never seen a living space so large. This mansion was enormous. At one time, Dane Majors had lived with his wife there. It seemed far too much for just two people.

Allie and Duncan got out of the car, and Jen landed nearby. She wanted to be close enough to follow them through doors and hear what they were saying. But not so close that they noticed her presence.

Duncan rang the bell at the gate and they waited. Allie's head jerked over in Jennifer's direction all of a sudden. "What's that smell? It's like…flowers or something," she said, looking around.

"I thought that was you," he answered, not paying much attention.

"Come on, you think I walk around wearing floral perfume? What kind of woman do you think I am? No, that's not me, but I feel like I've smelled it before. Just can't think of where," she said.

Jen froze and cursed herself. Nick had noticed her this way, too. She smelled like a garden, he said. It was thanks to her house being made of flower vines, she knew, but she was so used to it that she didn't notice. And all fairies lived like Jen did, so it wasn't much of a novelty to her. But now Allie noticed her. Jen could only hope that Duncan didn't recall the same scent when she'd spoken to him earlier or that Allie didn't remember it from when she'd interviewed Jen just a little more than a week earlier.

Duncan just shrugged and went back to ringing the bell. "No answer," Allie said, stating their rather obvious predicament. "Should we go up to the door? Take a look around?"

"Yeah, might as well. Worth at least seeing if the cars are gone," Duncan reasoned.

The detectives had to open the gate, but Jen just flew over it. There were some advantages to being a fairy, even if she did have to remain invisible and silent to keep from getting discovered. Jen knew she wasn't supposed to be here, but she also knew she couldn't possibly stay away. She had to find Nick. She had to know he was alright. She had to know what happened to him after she'd told him she loved him three days ago.

But there was nothing to find at Dane's house. His car was gone. The house was empty. The newspapers were piled up on the doorstep just as they'd been at Nick's house. It looked to Jennifer as though the two men had been gone the same amount of time.

"Back to the station, I guess," Allie said, heading back to the car. "What d'you think Sarge'll do?"

"It's not a Homicide matter, is it?" Duncan said. His phone rang, and he answered it before getting into the car.

Jen was glad he'd not gotten in and closed the door. Now he could hear the conversation.

"He what!?" Duncan exclaimed.

"What's going on?" Allie asked.

Duncan hung up and looked worried. "Rhys called. Sarge wants us back at the station right away. You remember Alan Sullivan, head of the Tribune?"

"Yeah, what about him?"

"His paper vilified Majors back when the trial was going on. And Juliette Gardiner was his reporter. Well Sullivan was just found dead in his house. Sullivan's car is gone. But Dane Majors' car was parked and abandoned just up the road. Neighbors said it'd been there about three days."

"Same amount of time Nick's been missing," Allie realized.

Duncan nodded. "We've gotta get back."

They got back in the car and started the engine. Jen was already flying swiftly. She knew the way back to the police station and took off like a shot to get there as soon as possible.

She was exhausted by the time she landed, but she'd beaten Duncan and Allie back, thanks to not having any traffic delays to account for. Jen maintained her invisibility as she followed someone back into the building and the small wooden room that would take her to the Homicide floor. Thankfully a uniformed officer got out on that floor that Jen could follow.

Rhys was on the phone doing something. Jen thought she could make out the description of a car. Presumably Alan Sullivan's car, the one they assumed Dane had.

The panic was setting in now. She had been so sure that Dane Majors would have at least been there, that she could go inside his house and find Nick there somewhere, could rescue him from whatever hideous revenge that Dane had planned. But instead, it was much worse. Jen was sure now that Dane had gotten Nick somehow and had likely hurt him. Alan Sullivan was dead. Jen didn't know the man at all, and she felt badly that another innocent person was dead at Dane's hands. But it meant too that Nick was in a lot of trouble. And they had no idea where he was. All Jennifer knew was that she had to find him. She had to find him and get to him somehow. He had to be alright.

Allie and Duncan arrived back and started right in on work. "Where are we at with things?" Duncan asked.

Sergeant Wolfe walked over and called to Duncan. "Freeman, head to Sullivan's house and take a look at the scene and then go to pathology, see if they've got anything on the body. Kingston, you and Levitt find more background on Majors. Anything that might lead us to where he might be hiding out.

"I'll check property holdings," Allie offered.

"I'm already on with the airports and train stations," Rhys said from the phone.

Duncan had turned and left already. Jen did not follow him. She didn't know why, but that didn't feel like where she needed to be. She needed to find Nick, and seeing where Alan Sullivan had been killed wasn't going to get her to Nick any faster, she thought.

Allie pulled out a box of papers, put aside from the Tahnee Majors case. From what Jen could see looking over her shoulder, it looked like a lot of important, official things with Dane's name on them. The detective started sorting through things, putting a stack of magazine photocopies to the side. Jen was careful to keep far enough away to not be noticed, but she leaned in to read an article with some pictures of Tahnee and Dane on the cover.

Their favorite hideaway isn't a five-star resort like most would expect; it's a family cabin that originally belonged to Dane's parents.

Jennifer felt her blood run cold. Of course. A cabin. A cabin in the woods. In the woods where Dane met Josh as a boy, where he'd met fairies and tried to discover the realm.

She realized, just as suddenly, that she'd not disappeared her wings before going outside and going completely invisible when she'd left Nick. She'd not thought about it. She was too caught up in kissing him and saying she loved him. What if Dane had been there, sitting in wait. What if Dane had seen?

As subtly as she could, Jen pushed the article over to Allie and flapped her wings just enough to cause a small, distracting breeze. It worked. Allie turned to see where the wind was coming from and she caught notice of the article.

"I might have found something…" she said.

Rhys looked over to her from where he was on the phone. "Found what?"

Allie rummaged through the box. "Yeah, here we go. Property in Warrandyte. Majors Family Trust. Cabin belonged to Dane's parents. We should check it out."

"I'll tell Sarge and get my keys," Rhys offered.

And before Jennifer knew it, they were back on the road. But Jen knew her way better this time. She was going to the woods. Her woods. She slowed when she had to follow the car to exactly where the cabin was, since Jen had no idea.

Her heart sank as they continued to drive. They were closer to the portal than she'd ever imagined. Dane must not have had to go far to find Josh all those years ago.

The car stopped and Rhys and Allie both go out. They had guns in their hands, looking grave at the possibility of a confrontation. "You go around back. If he's in there, we'll flush him out the front," Allie instructed.

"Okay," Rhys agreed, jogging around to the back of the house.

The silence was deafening. Only the soft sounds of Rhys's footsteps on the forest floor echoed through the trees. Jennifer was holding her breath, waiting for something to happen, knowing it wouldn't help anyone if she followed Rhys inside. Not this time.

"Dane Majors, this is the police!" Rhys shouted from the back of the house.

Allie waited, ready to meet whatever came through the front. But nothing came. Not for a moment, when the door opened and Rhys reappeared.

"Clear," he said.

A dead end. He wasn't there. Nick wasn't there either, obviously. Jennifer was about ready to go back to the realm, since she was so close anyway, and ask Terry for some assistance. Surely there must be something they could do.

"Don't go blindly into the dark!" came a loud cry.

Jennifer jerked her head up and saw Jerry flying in circles above the cabin. He let out another squawk and flew off. Jen did not wait for Rhys to ask what sort of bird that was before she took off like a flash to follow where the death watcher led.
