Chapter 32: The conquest of Kalinsha.
Quaiesse Hazia Quintia, also known as the "One man army" was inspecting his battle gears and his sacred items. Within this tent are the other two former Black Scripture members; the ninth and twelvth seat, making their preparations for the upcoming battle.
"You know? I can't help, but feel sorry for the others. Given that the Sorcerer King IS truly powerful, he's still an undead. No matter how I try to look at it, I just can't trust that. I just hope we don't end up having to fight them again, not so soon, anyhow. Not after we chose to follow the true teachings of the gods. I hope they'd just stop siding with that undead." Quaiesse wistfully said to his to comrades.
"What's this? Getting soft on those fools now, are we? C'mon man, the gods never did taught us to share this world with those lowly beings. It's just sad that the 'Thousand Miles Astrologer' had to die, to prevent them from tracking us down." Beaumarchais, the 'Divine Chains' teased his senior.
"Yeah, it's the same for Cedran too. He just got the worst luck of timing his visit to the seventh seat's home, right in the same time we were ordered to kill her. If he wasn't so superstitious, perhaps we could have convinced him to join our side. But, dead is dead and with the bodies burned to ashes; not even the cardinals' most trusted aides can help resurrect those two." The twelvth (Heaven and Earth) seat added.
"Well, I'm all set and ready for battle. Let's go do what we do best." Quaiesse called to the other two.
After their preparations, the three elite agents from Dominic's group left their tent and gave their subordinates their respective instructions. Meanwhile, within their secured camp, not too far from Duke Derwenze's; Cardinal Yvon was the first to don and activate his power suit. Following behind are Cardinal Dominic and Cardinal Ginedine. Wearing their massive and towering power suits, they slowly and carefully made their way towards the western walls of Kalinsha. This was to take advantage of the Duke's armies attacking from the south and eastern walls of the city.
The plan being that; while the defenders of the city are busy fighting off the Duke's army, the Cardinals' group will launch a surprise attack from the other direction. In theory, this should make the conquest of the City much faster, therefore; resulting in less lives lost.
Unbeknownst to the Cardinals; several tiny insects have been carefully and stealthily following them. Observing their every move, and listening to the every word they say, knowing all of their actions. These spies might be tiny and weak, but they do their lord's will with every ounce of obedience and reverence just as any resident of Nazarick would.
Quaiesse's summoned several huge Basilisks, these beasts greatly helped in moving the siege weapons across the trenches and other traps. With the trebuchets and other war machines being moved into position, it doesn't look good for the people inside the walled city.
Without any warning, Duke Derwenze raised his right hand and then quickly put it down in an arc. This signalled the soldiers and mercenaries to charge towards Kalinsha. With the Theocracy's forces aiding them, the soldier's morale was quite high being evident from their battle cries. Thus, the catapults and giant crossbows launched their projectiles at the wall and its defendants.
After the smoke cleared, Duke Derwenze and company were quite surprised to see that the walls weren't as damaged as they expected it would be. The walls only sustained some cracks, dents, and two feet diameter shallow craters with nearly three inches deep for the craters' depth. Even Old Purple was shocked to see the walls of Kalinsha being as tough as that, he quickly realized that this is no longer the Northern Roble Holy Kingdom of old. Though, somehow, Old Purple wasn't surprised that the projectiles that went over the wall were stopped in mid air due to some magic barrier. Duke Derwenze only summed it up to some new or high level defensive magic spell, saying it's only a matter of time before the City's defences give in.
The invading soldiers moved quickly to prepare the next wave of projectiles, while the rest of the army began their charge to scale the wall and to ram the City gate. As part of their preparations, the soldiers banded together and formed their shields akin to a wall and the following ones behind them held their shields up to cover against arrows. Strangely enough, Old Purple noticed that only conventional weapons were being used against them. The City's archers only used common arrows, as far as they can tell.
None of the arrows were able to penetrate the thick shields of the Duke's well funded soldiers, meaning they weren't any magical enchantments imbued in these arrows. Yet, they were protected by some sort of invisible magical wall that somehow covered the open space beyond the walls. Old Purple, with his decades of battle field experience; sensed something amiss indeed. He couldn't dismiss what his instincts are telling, since they were telling him to get away from all of this. As the soldiers were still taking some time to reload their respective ammunitions, Old Purple sent a messenger to ask for Quaiesse's assistance and to buy them more time.
Quaiesse obliged to their allies' request by ordering the ten fully grown Giant Basilisks to climb the walls. But these monsters are not just normal ones, no; these were clearly much bigger than the ones that could be found within large mountain forests. These are the infamous Scarlet Giant Basilisks. They are mostly found within the desert lands, southwest of the Theocracy. Unlike their already deadly green colored counterparts; these are used to the extreme hot temperatures of the scorching deserts. Their red, spiky hides are much tougher, and it also contains a much more potent kind of toxin on their skins. And unlike their green cousins, they can also spit out their venom that happens to be very flammable.
Quaiesse ordered his pets to scale the walls and kill all of the walls defenders, so that they could send their own people to open the gates; letting their forces inside the City. However, with only less than ten meters from the base of the City's outer walls, the wide gates opened and from it, came out numerous large vehicles that no one outside of the Sorcerer Kingdom had ever seen before.
These large, metal behemoths have its entire body covered in thick durable metal with several tubes coming out of its upper half. These tubes varied in size and length, while its wheels are also made out of metal and covered in what appears to be chained thick metal plates that forms into a looping thread. These threads bear many short spikes that are patterned into the metal threads.
These large vehicles quickly formed an informal line, facing the invaders. Then they pointed their large tubes, aimed at the incoming Basilisks. A loud man's voice from behind the walls could be heard saying "Fire!" and with that, the armored metal vehicles let out a deafening "BOOM!" noise. The next thing Quaiesse and the rest of the invading forces saw; were dead Giant Basilisks along with several soldiers nearby. As if to snap them off from their bewildered state; another set of firing noises were heard again. But this time, it was the Duke's trebuchets and other siege machines that went down, just like a promo advertisement tower of pickled jars stacked on top of each other in supermarket.
The Duke's soldiers, as well as those from the Cardinals' group and even the three Ex Scripture members stopped in their tracks. The sight of these new, strange, but very big mobile contraptions are menacing indeed. Aside from them being near the size of an average house, the loud noise and the brutal force of its shots imposes its power on the enemy.
Quaiesse's face reddened with rage. The ten Scarlet Giant Basilisks that he tamed and trained for a long time, are now just piles of burned flesh on the ground. In retaliation, he summoned more beasts from his sacred items. At the same time, 'Divine Chains' ordered their soldiers to push through the gate. Divine Chains, together with the twelvth seat 'Heaven and Earth' quickly made for the still opened gates with their soldiers following their lead. While the 'One man army' was focusing his own 'forces' against the tanks, the Duke's soldiers still made a break for the gate as well.
The tanks suddenly moved quickly, rampaging onto the invading soldiers' metal covered flesh. Something as big as a house moving around sixty miles per hour isn't something new in this world, but seeing something this size and is man-made was not. Apart from the chaos which is the battlefield, Old Purple deployed his army of magic casters and protecting them at the front; the Southern Holy Kingdom's Paladin Corps.
Mounted on their trusted steeds, the Paladins moved forward to stem the tide back to their favor. Above them are numerous angels summoned by the priests and magic caster paladins. the magic casters aimed their angels' attacks on the tanks, knowing their magical flaming swords could wrought out much more damage compared to a sword of steel. At the same time, the non-summoning magic casters took to the skies and began bombarding various spells on the armored ground vehicles.
Even before the Southern Paladins and Theocracy could get close to the tanks, they were met numerous attack spells. These spells were fired upon them from the magic casters that belonged to silver and gold ranked Adventurer Teams. These Adventurers were eagerly waiting for their chance to taste the fame and glory found in real battle, their team mates whole heartedly charged outside the gate to ensure that none of the invaders ever make it inside.
With the adventurers clashing upfront against the summoned beasts and the southern armies, the tanks initially focused their attacks on the flying mages. However, due to the mages mobility in the air, the tanks' fires mostly missed its mark and so they refocused their attacks on the upcoming reinforcements from the enemy camps. Throughout the confronting sides' clashes, their respective leaders sought to use various tactics to try and overwhelm the other. The one with the epithets of "One man army", "Divine Chains" and "Heaven and Earth" used their heroic athletics to run up the walls and infiltrate the City. Scaling the least protected side of the walls, they made sure that they weren't spotted by anyone. What they saw beyond the walls shocked them to their core. Inside the walls are thousands upon thousands of various species of Beastmen, Demi-humans, and Heteromorphs ready to charge and wreak havoc on the Southern armies.
In a one-on-one battle, the two Ex Scripture members were confident that they could win easily. But against a large number of enemies, even they would have a very hard time to win against such a predicament. Another jolt went up their spine after seeing a specific group in the rear of the Northern Holy Kingdom's army; this small group of people just happen to include the most dangerous warrior the human race could offer.
Clad in his jet black armor, with a menacing glowing red circle on its chest; Momon's new armor looked more powerful and even more intimidating. For their plans to succeed, eliminating high risk targets like Momon is definitely crucial. What got their attention next, is a magical beast that is suited up in a full plated Adamantite armor that has two extremities on its back, they noticed that the two extensions at the back of the armor seems to be made of several tubes connected together and that its features seemed familiar to them.
"Silver fur, serpent-like tail… the description matches the one from the stories about the 'Wise King of the Forest'. I've heard about it from merchants from the Re-Estize Kingdom, seeing it for real? Its eyes shined with intelligence indeed. I'm sure Quaiesse would want that thing added to his army of beasts." The twelvth seat expressed his opinion on Hamsuke.
"Yeah, yeah, it does look adorable. Even inside such armor, it's still cute. Too bad, we need to kill it along with team Darkness." Quaiesse Chains replied.
"You know the drill. I attack them together with my summons, while they focus their attention on me; you restrain Team Darkness. And then, 'Heaven and Earth' goes for the kill. We can't let this fight last long or we'll be in the losing end, so make it count guys." Quaiesse instructed the other two.
With the battles focused on the front gates, the local leaders did not notice the lack of reports from their weaker side. A big mistake indeed, for this helped provide the former scripture agents the opportunity they needed as the fifth seat used his plethora of summoning items to materialize his numerous magical beasts, he then, set them down to attack the troops below them. Meanwhile, the twelvth seat went on completely stealth as he made for a run about route to stab Momon and Nabe.
Using a scroll containing an invisibility spell, "Divine Chains" tried to hide his presence as he aimed to use his scared chains in restraining Team Darkness. With the fifth seat peering his sights on instructing his beasts against the enemy reserves, a sudden painful thrust pierced through his chest.
"Urgh! What the?!" Quaiesse uttered while he stood still, blood bursting from his mouth. Shaken in shock; he stared at the spearhead that went from his back out to his chest.
"Fitting for a traitor don't you think? I guess you and Clementine really are sibling, damned bastard!" Sylvan sarcastically remarked as he twisted the spear's edge while pulling it out.
"That was for the 'Thousand Miles Astrologer'." Sylvan added as he spit at the corpse of the former fifth seat of the Black Scripture. He then, proceeded to move towards the other two traitors. In which his father and Cardinal Raymond moved to confiscate Quaiesse's sacred items, and stop the summoned beasts from attacking the City's defenders; turning the summoned creatures against the southern forces instead.
At the same time of Quaiesse's death. 'Divine Chains' managed to get close enough to ensnare Team Darkness, which happens to be just right next to each other. His chains glowed in line with his anticipation of their capture. Then, without warning, he saw his own chains whiplashed back at him. The tremors numbed his hands as he was flung into the nearby walls.
"How? How the hell did that happened? What the fuck just happened?" Divine Chains asked himself. He struggled to get off the dent on the wall he was trapped in, so he tried to check back on his sacred chains.
What he saw was Momon holding on to the chains. It was then, that he pieced the facts together. He remembered that he was easily pushed back into the wall when his own chains whiplashed back onto him. Though he realized what really happened, his mind still refused to acknowledge such reality. The next thing he saw was his own body spurting a fountain of blood, then the sky, then his shoes.
The Sixth seat of the Black Scripture wasn't contented with simply beheading his former team mate; so he kept on chopping the head and body of the former ninth seat with visible rage.
"Damn you! Damn you! Damn you! Damn you! Damn you! Damn you! Damn you! Damn you! We would have been married in a few years. But, you just had to kill her!" the Sixth seat uttered as he hacked on his victim's corpse with real tears and rage.
These unexpected events surprised the twelvth seat, seeing his former captain and the sixth seat both killing his two comrades. Within a spilt-second of momentary distraction, he felt his neck get crushed and his abdomen pierced at the same time. In the next moment; he saw his muscular former comrade holding him up by the neck and the second seat with his spiral lance impaling his torso.
With the "Strongest Man" crushing his neck altogether, he couldn't do anything but feel his windpipe get crushed and his abdomen getting stabbed again and again.
"That was for our drinking buddy, Cedran. Does this hurt? Good, you deserved all this pain and more."The Tenth seat said to his stealth victim.
"Stop attacking the magical beasts! They're under our control now. Let's move out and save this City!" Cardinal Raymond shouted as he and Sylvan's father gained control over the summoned beasts by the late former fifth seat.
